Any iTunes newer than 7.0 won't install; iPod Service won't start

I've been tryin gto get a new iTunes installed on here but every time i try to install anything over 7.0 the installation halts at starting services and says it can't start the iPod service. I've tried manually shutting down the iPod service before running the installation, disconnecting my iPod, and restart upon restart.
i've played around with disabling services in windows before but i don't think that anything i switched to manual would've really made that much of a difference besides the iPod service itself, which i switched back to automatic anyway. the strange part is that iTunes 7.0 seems to start the iPod service and install itself just fine. i don't know what the problem is but it's annoying whatever it is.
someone please help

for what it is worth, i believe that that means it is hanging up on resources relating to the french language version of the ipodhelp documentation in your itunes help menu.
try navigating to
C:\ProgramFiles\iTunes\iTunes.Resources\fr.lproj\iPodHelp.chm
... and deleting that file.
does the install go through properly after doing that?

I created a new account with a parental control. Logged in under the new account and Safari won't start anymore. It quits directly after starting. Any help suggestion ?
    Thanks much

Does it work in your old account?
If so, delete everything in the folder /Users/controlled account name/Library/InputManagers.
Also try deleting /Users/controlled account name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist.
(replace controlled account name with the name of the controlled account)

  • When I download itunes, it says that Ipod Service failed to start. I checked the services under task manager and when I try to start it, it says access denied. How to I get access and for the ipod service to start and run?

Please help. My ipod classic could not be recognised by itunes when I connect my ipod to PC. Previously it has been recognised before I updated. This was a while ago now and so I removed all apple files and re installed the latest itunes but am having the same problem.
When I download itunes, it says that Ipod Service failed to start. I checked the services under task manager and when I try to start it, it says access denied. How to I get access and for the ipod service to start and run?

Some anti-virus programs (e.g., McAfee) have this rule that can be invoked under the "maximum protection" settings: PREVENT PROGRAMS REGISTERING AS A SERVICE. If that rule is set to BLOCK, then any attempt to install or upgrade iTunes will fail with an "iPod service failed to start" message.
If you are getting this problem with iTunes, check to see if your anti-virus has this setting and unset it, at least for as long as the iTunes install requires. Exactly how to find the rule and turn it on and off will vary, depending upon your anti-malware software. However, if your anti-virus or anti-malware software produces a log of its activities, examining the log may help you find the problem.
For example, here's the log entry for McAfee:
9/23/2009 3:18:45 PM Blocked by Access Protection rule NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe \REGISTRY\MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\iPod Service Common Maximum Protection:Prevent programs registering as a service Action blocked : Create
Note that the log says "Common Maximum Protection: Prevent programs registering as a service". The "Common Maximum Protection" is the location of the rule, "Prevent programs registering as a service" is the rule. I used that information to track down the location in the McAfee VirusScan Console where I could turn the rule off.
After I made the change, iTunes installed without complaint.

  • ITunes 9.0 install problem: iPod service fails to start, installer quits

    Hi,
I tried to upgrade my iTunes from 8.XXX(I think it was latest 8) to 9.0 but run into this problem where the installer tries to start the iPod service and fails. The installer can not continue any more and it has to be rolled back. I uinstalled 8.xx and tried again but same result. I also tried the suggestion in another thread about stopping the AppleMobileDevice service and removing the folder but it did not help. This is the error message:
"Product: iTunes -- Error 1920. Service 'iPod Service' (iPod Service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."
I am logged in as the admin so I do have sufficient privileges.
Is any one having the same problem? How do I make it work? I am using Win XP-Pro SP3 32bit.
    Thanks

I was finally able to make it work. I did the following steps:
    1. Delete/unistall every thing related to Apple/iTunes
    2. Delete itunes folder if its still there.
    3. open MSCONFIG->General->check off 'Load Startup Items'->click 'ok'
    4. Reboot
    5. Install iTunes
    6. You can turn on Load Startup Items after iTunes installs.

  • 7.3 iTunes :service 'iPod service' (iPod service) failed to start."

Please help me i'm desperate. Ok so, i go to update and charge my ipod and when i plug in my ipod and open ituens it says that i need to download 7.3 for some reason i didnt think much of it. basically i tried downloading it, and when it go to the very end of the download it said, "service 'iPod service' (iPod service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." ok that would help if i knew what the heck that was! so i've tried uninstalling and downloading, downloading older versions, looking for iPod service, and i've tried downloading, restarting and then trying to install but still the same exact problem. even when i hit retry the same message comes up, and now i have no itunes and i have no clue what to do, please help me i'm seriously desperate!
    -thanks

... i'll see your "oh dear" and raise you a "good gracious!" ...
You are the second person in a matter of days that i've seen report identical symptoms. keiko ran into precisely the same trouble:
I followed your directions and when i selected manage i got a message saying "Snap-in failed to initialize. Name:Shared Folders Extension CLSID:{58221C69-EA27-11CF-ADCF-00AA00A80033}". Then once i got into the screen i found the tab marked services and applications. i expanded that and and all that i found was WMI Control and Indexing Service.
    That's in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4916874#4916874
That has me worried that there might be new something going around messing with folks' snap-ins.
We'd better try getting the malware possibility covered.
Download fresh definitions, and run vigorous virus and spyware scans. if your security software providers offer them, try running "online scans" too. (They can sometimes pick up an infection even if the software on the PC has been compromised.)
Do the scans pick anything up? If so, what does the security software call them? (names assigned to viruses and spyware tend to differ, depending on what security software you are using.)

  • Error during iTunes 10 installation - iPod Service failed to start

    Hi Everyone,
I am getting this error during installation of iTunes 10(Windows XP).
+*"Service (iPod Service)failed to start.Verify that you have sufficient priveleges to start system services."*+
*Can any of you please help?* I ignored it first and continued with the installation. Then tried to update iphone to iOS 4.1 which crashed. I had to go to Apple store to get my iphone restored. I am having trouble installing itunes and cannot restore data from backup.
I tried uninstalling itunes and deleted all itunes data as suggested by the guy at the Apple store. Still not working. Will appreciate if someone can help resolve this error. Thanks.

I just got off the phone with Apple tech support. The problem with that iPod Service is a problem with XP Service Pack 3, but can be fixed this way:
    1. Right click on "My Computer", select "Properties"
    2. Click on the Advanced tab.
    3. in the Startup and Recovery section, click the Settings button.
    4. Click the Edit byutton to edit your boot.ini file in notepad.
    5. Look for "/noexecute=" in the file and change the word after the equals to "optin" (sorry - I don't remember what the original setting was anymore).
    6. Save the file, close notepad, click the OK button on Startup and Recovery window, then reboot.
The warning message about the iPod Service should stop. Also, this helps with iPhones that are not recognized by Windows or iTunes after an install fails.

I try to connect my iPod to my desktop and the comp reads it as a disk but every time in iTunes it comes up with the iPod Service Module failed to start (or something). On my laptop it reads it just fine and as much as I could us my laptop instead of my desktop, I don't want to. Any help anyone?

  • Security Update/ iTunes 6.0.4 - iBook won't start up

After installing the Security update and iTunes update, my iBook G4, running OSX 10.3.9, gets stuck when starting up; the window stalls at 'Waiting for printing services' or Starting internet services'. It starts in Safe Mode (no Airport). I repaired permissions with Onyx, reset PRAM, to no avail.
    Any suggestions?

    Lawrence:
Since you have already reset the PRAM and Repaired Disk Permissions the next thing is to Repair Disk: (Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key. When booted from the installer disk go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility. Select your HDD (manufacturer name) in the left panel and First Aid in the Main panel. Click Repair Disk on the bottom right. If DU reports errors run Repair again, and again until no errors are reported.
Note: If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a third party utiity like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior)
Post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Itunes will not setup....'ipod service' could not be stopped

While installing itunes...at Status: Stopping Services...a box appears and says: 'ipod service' could not be stopped. Verify that you have suffiecient privileges to stop system services.
    What does this mean?

that can happen sometimes if the itunes installer is having a hard time shutting down either itunes or quicktime (or applications using quicktime) prior to the install. so let's try a "download, restart, then install strategy."
    leave your ipod unplugged.
download and save a copy of the itunes installer to your hard drive. (do not run the install on line, and do not start the install by clicking on the iTunesSetup.exe (installer) file just yet.)
    iTunes 7.0.2.16 Installer
shut down running applications and restart the PC.
do not open any other applications prior to attempting the iTunes install. switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
now start the install by doubleclicking the iTunesSetup.exe file.
does the install go through properly this time?

    Hi mish11mish11,
Lets see if we can get that working again. If you are having issues with the Apple Mobile Device Service you may need to just restart the service. Check out the first article to walk you through that process. If you are still having issues, take a look at the second article to continue your troubleshooting.

  • New iMac 20 500Gb won´t start

I got my new iMac iSight 20" today. With the wireless keyboard and mouse and the 500Gb hd option. Great - if it would start.
First time I switched it on, I heard the Apple-sound, then the screen turned gray and showed the apple-logo. Forever. At leasts for several minutes. Then I switched it off, disconnected the power-cord and tried again. Now the screen won´t even turn gray, but after a while the fans runs like crazy.
    Defective disc? or what?

I tried pushing the cd in, but it wasn´t drawn in.
This may sound obvious, but I just wanted to verify that you tried inserting the CD with the computer on. The drive should accept the disk as long as it has power.
If it is not accepting the CD with the power on, then you definitely have something interesting going on inside the computer.
I have had several macs since the 80s but this is my worst experience so far
For some reason the iMac G5's seem to be having more than their share of trouble. They don't seem to have the success rate that I am familiar with on Apple's other computers.
I've had two iMac G5's (purchased from Apple) and have had both of them serviced many times.
My recent one is only a couple weeks old, and was put in for service the same day it arrived.
But, with AppleCare I am sure I'll have all the bugs worked out by the time my 3-year warranty expires. If not, they can keep taping it together to get me through the next 3 years.
I am not sure why Apple's quality has seemed to slip. I have never had any trouble with any other Apple computer other than the two iMac G5 computers I have had. Even my first generation Mini is working fine with no service ever having been needed.
Sad when compared to the $400 Compaq I have. I purchased a Compaq PC for some other needs we have, and it hasn't had a single problem at all. It also had a very small profit margin for Compaq, so they didn't short me on the deal. It's a AMD Athlon 64 3400+. Basically, it's a 64-BIT system with a 2.4 GHz CPU that supposed to compare to a 3.4 GHz Intel (which it does quite favorably). It's fast, powerful (for a PC), and definitely more reliable than either of the iMac G5's I've had.
I also sold my 3 or 4 year old HP computer last year, and it put in a strong service life. The new owners are still using it without any trouble (I know them). And, it never failed once. Again, I only paid about $400 for it as well.
I've owned tons of PC's and the following Mac's:
    PowerMac G3 266-DT
    iBook SE G3 366 (Indigo)
    iMac G3 333 (Lime)
    iMac G5 (rev. A) 1.8 GHz
    Mac Mini 1.25 GHz
    iMac G5 (rev. B) 2.0 GHz
And, the only systems I've ever had fail have been the two iMac G5 computers.
So, Apple's quality control seems to have gone down where the iMac G5's are concerned. I wish I could say that they were as reliable as my PC's, but unfortunately the PC's and the older Mac's are rock solid by comparison.

  • New Core Duo just won't start up again

    Hi Everyone,
I am having a problem with my shiny new Core Duo Mini which I received yesterday. I would contact Apple support but today is a public holiday in Australia so I figured I would try the forums.
All went well with the set up. I ran software update and got all the updates (10.4.6, iPhoto, iTunes, Java, Front Row, and a couple of others that I can't remember) and did a reboot. All was fine.
I opened up iPhoto and imported all my photos but as it neared the end of the import the machine just cut out, gave me a black screen, made it's boot-up chime and started rebooting. I have owned Mac's for years and never had one do this to me before.
I figured maybe I had worked it too hard (I just imported 12000 raw images which probably gave it a good workout) so I thought I would do a shut down and let it cool down for a while. Before I got a chance to shut it down it cut-out again and powered off.
I left it for a while then tried to start it up but all I got was the flashing power LED (it flashes very breifly about once a second - sort of like blip............blip...........blip.........blip......... etc. ) and no display signal. I checked out Apple Support and tried a PRAM reset using CMD-OPT-P-R and SMC reset by unplugging all the cables and leaving it for a few minutes but to no avail.
I am using Apple wireless keyboard and mouse and I when it all started to go wrong I had an external firewire drive connected. I also have a blank CD stuck in the drive that I can't eject.
I wondered if it had somehow changed the start-up drive and is looking for another start-up disc or something?? At this point any advice would be really appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Paul.

Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   512MB, Apple Wireless KB & Mouse

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for that. I tried ejecting the CD as you suggested by holding down the mouse button (I tried with both my Apple wireless mouse and an old MS USB mouse that I have) but it won't spit the CD out.
When I power-up the Mini the CD drive makes the usual mechanical noises that it should and it spins up for a few seconds but all the while I still have the flashing power LED and nothing else happens. I noticed that when I used the MS mouse the optical sensor on the bottom of the mouse didn't light.
I am suspecting that this Mac Mini may be taking a trip back to Apple very soon.
    Thanks again for the suggestions.
    Paul.

  • ITunes stops during playback and won't start until I restart the computer

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I just reformated my computer and placed all the updates and programs back onto my computer. I had iTunes on my computer before and I reinstalled it then upgraded it to version 7.3.2.6. Now I've been reintroducing music back into the library on a folder by folder method (drag and drop). Anyway, during review of the songs I will get a random issue where the iTunes just stops during playback. I have shut down the program and restarted it. I've also shut down the following programs at different times to see if it would help:
iPodService, ITunes.exe (the program), iTunesHelper, and even taskmgr.exe. Nothing seems to help. When I restart the program I click on play (any song or playlist) and nothing happens. The only thing that I have found to help is rebooting my computer. Does anyone have any ideas?
I've check the event logs and nothing is showing in there and other programs are working without an issues.
    Please help!

Any suggestions on what this can be?
