Any Limits to using BranchCache with Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 or R2

Have a client looking to leverage the Branchcache feature in their office locations, over 1000 with numbers ranging from 2 - 40 in size.  There would be 2 - 4 central Primary distribution points servicing these clients in the 1000+ offices.
Do I need to look at requesting them to make changes to their design to have more distribution points to allow more branchcache clients to connect, are there any limitations?
I am aware the content is un managed (self managed no control) so the distributions may go over the links more then once.
Also aware that this would autoset a branchcache on each subnet even though it is a single location, but has multiple subnets.
Thanks,

Have a read about our BranchCache addons after reading our FAQ, for others just wanting some info:
1. Yes the servers needs to have the same key to ensure that hashes are compatible for all servers (i.e. the same)
2. Reporting will show how efficient it is:
http://2pintsoftware.com/portfolio-items/branchcache-reporting/?portfolioID=10528
3. Yes its per Subnet

  • Deploying Office 365 Pro Plus using System Center Configuration Manager 2012 SP1

    Hello,
I am trying to deploy Office 365 Pro Plus to my client machines (more than 100) via. System Center Configuration Manager 2012 SP1. It will use one administrator account for installation. But as per the licensing, we can install Office for up to 5 PCs/Macs
and 5 more Windows tablets/iPads with one Office 365 Pro Plus licenses. If this is the case, then I cannot install Office 365 Pro Plus with one admin account to my 100+ machines, as it will violate the licenses of O365 Pro Plus.
So, what is the alternative approach?
    Thanks
    Raj

    Hi,
    this is incorrect.
There is no licensing restriction/control for the *installation* account at all, the licensing is related to who is *using* Office365ProPlus *after* installation is performed. This control, is implemented by the Microsoft Account, or OrgID, used to sign-in/activate
    to Office365 when *using* Office365ProPlus.

  • Streamlined Client Management and VDI with Configuration Manager 2012

    Hi,
There is an interesting blog about managing ConfigMgr 2012 Clients in a VDI environment.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/server-cloud/archive/2011/11/15/streamlined-client-management-and-vdi-with-configuration-manager-2012.aspx
But I didn't find any way or description in the blog on how to prepare the client in the base image used for VDI. Do we still have to make the client unique before shutting down the base image? Or will this be done automatically?
Are these new attributes (IsVirtual, IsMachineChangesPersistent ...) enabled by default?
    Thanks!
    Gr. Cédric.

No this is handled by ConfigMgr post SP1
Are these new attributes (IsVirtual, IsMachineChangesPersistent ...) enabled by default?
For XenDesktop  -no you will need to enable them in the client settings (not sure for other virtual
    solutions)
In the SCCM Console go to the Administration workspace; click Client Settings. Right click the Default Client Settings and choose Properties
Choose Hardware Inventory and click Set Classes.
Click the Add button and then click Connect.
Enter the computer name of a master image device that has the SCCM client installed.
Enter root\ccmvdi as the WMI namespace and click Connect.
    Select CCM_DesktopMachine. Click Ok.

    Hi Team,
We have Configuration manager 2012 SP1 and we have requirement to migrate winXP\Win7\Win8\Win8 systems to Windows 8.1 update 1. We are looking for supporting replace, refresh and baremetal OS deployments. Can anyone give some pointers for things we need
to take care while planning approach for migrations. OS image for windows 8.1 update 1 are created through MDT 2013 and we are planning to use Config manager 2012 SP1 for deploying these images with above scenarios.

  • Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 updates

    Hi,
Are there any updates to Config Manager 2012 sp1 other than the Cumulative updates?
I see there are 3 cumulative updates but each say to not install unless a specific fix is needed.
I am not sure if any of the fixes might fix some problem that we might not have today but could later.
Should we just not upgrade or should we apply the CU1, 2 and 3 even though we dont have any specific problems?
    Thanks Lance

    Lance,
There are actually 4 Cumulative updates. The patches are cumulative so you only apply the latest.
    http://sccmentor.wordpress.com/2014/01/29/cumulative-update-4-for-system-center-2012-configuration-manager-service-pack-1-is-now-available/
As to installing, it depends if you have any currently issues that are addressed by the patches or need to support Windows 8.1 in anyway, in which case you would have to go with CU3 and above.
Personally I like to keep the system up to date but with any update fix there's always the chance of it introducing a new issue,
    Cheers

  • Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 CU4 Console - Content Status very slow

    I have a SCCM 2012 SP1 CU4 environment running.
When using the console and viewing the Monitoring / Distribution Status / Content Status it took about 10-15 minutes to get the information.
How can this be speed up a bit ? By adding additional indexes in SQL ?
Any tips, hints are very welcome.

    Hi,
Have you seen this previuous thread on the topic?
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/7935143e-21a8-4770-83bf-7e1938d9defd/configuration-manager-2012-content-status-slow?forum=configmanagergeneral
I would run the script from Ola that reports back on the indexe defragementeation and what I normally see as well is that more than one TempDB file increases performance greatly. It is most likely covered in the session mentioned above by Tim.

  • User State Migration using SMP with config manager 2012 R2

    Hi ,
I have SMP at primary site and need to migrate XP and 7 machines using this SMP (using USMT),
what are the steps do i need to define in TS so that usmt can use State migration point for user setting\data backup?
Another challenge i see it with XP since we are deciding to take 2 phase approach, that means we will backup data using 1 TS (3 step TS) and then restore data as part of another TS that will install windows 8.1 also with user state restore.
Any pointers if we need to define anything special in TS (migration store etc.) or since its SMP, TS should able to take care of finding it automatically and backup\restore user state?
We have MDT based TS, just wondering if we need to define anything inside CS.ini file related to SMP?
Any pointers will be appreciated. Thanks

  • SQL Server Configuration Manager (2012 SP1): "IP All" Setting Not Saving

I have 4 SQL Server 2012 SP1 clusters, and under Network Configuration ->
TCP/IP -> Protocol (tab), I am able to switch
Listen All from Yes to No. However, when I hit
OK (or Apply), I get the message:
Any changes made will be saved; however they will not take effect until the service is stopped and restarted.
    OK, fine.
Now, if I re-open the TCP/IP properties, Listen All is back to
    Yes.
This happens even after I restart the SQL Server service, and it happens on all 4 instances.
I have checked the version of Configuration Manager - 2011.0110.2100.060. I've compared this with a (non clustered) SQL Server 2012 where I can flip the
IP All field at whim, the versions are the same (as are the SQL Server versions,
    11.0.3000.0 Build 7601).
I've also ensured that under IP Addresses, the one that I want to use has
Enabled = Yes, all other IPs have Enabled = No.
Neither BOL nor Google have any useful information for me.
Has anyone seen this before? Bug or WAD (and I'm doing something wrong)?

    Hi,
    Per
Case 4: SQL Server is installed in a clustered environment:
On cluster, you cannot configure SQL Server to listen on a specific IP addresses. You must chose IPALL. The IP addresses on which the cluster instance will be listening on is determined by cluster resources (configurable through Cluster Administrator,
by adding IP Address resources under SQL Network Name resource).
    Here is a workaround:

    Hello,

  • Installation of Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 site keeps failing on various prerequisite programs

I am attempting to install a new CM 2012 SP1 primary site on a new Windows Server 2012 vm with SQL 2012 SP1.  The prereqchk.exe tool indicates no issues, but when I try to run through the setup, it fails on SQL RMO and VC Redistributable x86.  Someone

  • Configure WSUS with Configuration Manager 2012 R2

We configured WSUS to be integrated with SCCM 2012 R2.
WSUS is on a different server than SCCM 2012 R2, and we have the site server role SUP installed on this server.
Both servers are Server 2012 R2.
We are doing Software updates, and I have some basic questions.
I can see from the logs that it downloaded all the updates, but where are they stored in SCCM, and how do I know they are there.
    Thanks

Well, that's a tough one to put in words correctly and completely.
Basically, it doesn't affect the built-in processes and they are still fully enabled. A few key points:
    - The ConfigMgr agent does set a local group policy pointing each client's WUA at the WSUS instance underlying the SUP.
    - The WSUS instance, once integrated into ConfigMgr is only responsible for the update catalog (and update EULAs) including downloading it from Microsoft and making it available to clients. Technically, that WSUS instance could still be used to approve
and deploy updates directly, but its not supported to do so and could cause side effects; thus the warning above in my post not to do this.
    - Updates are downloaded by ConfigMgr and clients retrieve them using standard ConfigMgr content handling.
    - The WUA, which is still alive and kicking, performs actions like scanning for applicable updates and installing updates at the direction of the ConfigMgr client. If not disabled (see blog posts below), the WUA will carry on its merry way and similar to
the WSUS situation above, could technically do things on its own but because nothing has been approved in the WSUS instance its pointing to, it doesn't do much except what the ConfigMgr client tells it to do -- there actually is reason to disable it though
(see blog posts listed blew for more info on that).
These two blog posts I did a while back should help fill in some blanks:

  • Using the pre-configured SCCM 2012 SP1 endpoint protection templates for Exchange 2010?

I am looking to update the exclusions for SCCM Endpoint Protect clients performing server AV protection on Exchange 2010 nodes.
Within SC there are a number of pre-defined templates, including ones for Exchange 2007 / 2010. However when I analyse these they do not appear to list all the exclusions that the Exchange product team define on TechNet -
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb332342(v=exchg.141).aspx
    So do I;
1 - Use the template as it has been verified by Microsoft for using with Exchange 2010 and it covers all I need to exclude?
2 - Edit the template, adding in the additional exclusions as defined by the Exchange product team?
Would whichever logic I use apply to other templates, such as SQL, SharePoint, etc as well?
    Thank you
    Alan

As I cut and pasted the xml file I noticed the following comment that I had missed before..........
            <!-- Exchange -->
<!-- Exchange Server 2010 exclusions are defined in TechNet bb332342 -->
<!-- Although the exclusions defined in the article work, testing showed that they exceed what is necessary-->
Still going with adding the full recommended list from TechNet though

  • MDT integrated with Configuration manager

    Hi Team,
Just wondering if it is suggested not to open or use MDT console workbench once its been integrated with configuration manager?
I been using it for a while and never faced any issues. I believe it should be fine to use the MDT and configuration manager both even after they been integrated. I generally use MDT workbench for building image and then use Configuration
manager MDT based TS to deploy it.  I don't see any technical risk. Any advice\best practice? Thanks.
    Regards,

There should be no problem opening up the MDT console on a machine with ConfigMgr installed, they are separate programs.
