Any logic to what my YouView box records?

Hi,
Just wondering if this is normal, I set my YouView box to record Click on the BBC News channel, all I got today was half hour of Mandela mania.  I'm sure my Sky box used to wait until the programme was actually on (so getting round any schedule changes) before recording it, can't the YouView box do the same?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

They quite often do not show the first scheduled broadcast of Click (at about 1.30 am on saturday) if there is some "important" news. You'd think that it wouldn't be necessary to show that news, which might have been on each bulletin during the previous day, in the middle of the night but they do.
There are several schedulings of Click and eventually one of them should be shown!

  • Do I still need a Youview box?

Maybe a slightly strange question for this forum but I have just bought my first Smart TV and am wondering what the benefits of keeping the BT TV contract are. From what I can tell, the main difference between the box and my TV functions is being able to record one programme and watch something different. I currently have the older black BT Vision box so guess an upgrade is in order if I stick with it.
Can anyone offer any pointers on what else the box has to offer - picture quality, apps, BT Sport (can I get the app directly on my TV?). Any thoughts welcome.

You can get BT Sport on a YouView box if you are on an appropriate BT TV package and if your line is suitable.  You would have to check on the BT Sport web page to find that out.
The YouView box has built-in Freeview HD tuners, so it can receive and record HD channels.  YouView also has some add-on players.  These may or may not also be available on your smart TV.

  • Any way to change aspect ratio via youview box?

I have a Sharp LC-13SH1E 20" tv. Since replacing the Vision box with the new Youview box 3 days ago, the picture is all stretched and elongated up/down. BT advised changing the aspect ratio on my tv but there is no way of doing so on this tv.
This is the advice i received from a pc forum:
"It sounds like the YouView box is outputting a widescreen image, and because your TV's has an aspect ratio of 4:3, everything looks stretched vertically.
I've had a look at the manual for TV too but there don't appear to be any options for selecting the aspect ratio. I've also looked at the YouView box manual expecting to see the same sort of options I get on my Sky Box such as 16:9, 4:3, 4:3 letterbox, etc. The last two are the ones relevant to your setup. I can't unfortunately find the same settings for your YouView box. Have a good look yourself and hopefully you'll find there is indeed a way to change the box's aspect ratio to 4:3.
    Good luck."
Can anyone help please? Been round and round in circles with the **bleep** thing.....

Actually, i have another question... since i was not made aware of this design fault when i took out the contract, can i cancel it? Really cross.
The picture should be displayed on your TV in a letterbox - a wide thin image in the horizontal middle with black bars top and bottom. If you're seeing it any other way the chances are your TV IS doing something to the picture.
I think the problem is actually that the TV isn't doing anything to the picture. It's just treating all signals as though they are 4:3 regardless of what the WSS indicator is telling it (SCART Pin 8 ?). Hence 7ft-person-o-vision. This seems a bit daft considering widescreen transmissions have been around for donkeys years long before digital TV or Freeview and Youview. The TV does seem to have a fundamental design fault. I have a 14 year old portable 4:3 CRT TV and even that allows me to display widescreen transmissions correctly in letterboxed format.
    cath60,
I can appreciate that you might have assumed a new box would do the appropriate 4:3 reformatting like the BT Vision box does, but I guess they have to phase out support for certain things at some point in time. All the BT boxes after the silver ones also had the picture output over RF cable facility removed as well which annoyed a lot of customers. Sky have now removed that from their latest boxes as well. Things move on. It's just unfortunate that you happen to also have a TV that seems to have been designed with no thought for widescreen transmissions.

  • I have an issue with my ipad2.  There is a dialogue box open regarding connecting to hotmail and I cannot close it.   Any ideas on what I can do?

I have an issue with my ipad2.  There is a dialogue box open stating "Cannot verify server identity - Hotmail can't verify  the identity of "m.hotmail.com" - Would you like to continue anyway?"  I cannot close it close this box no matter what I press.  As a result I cant get in to my ipad.  Any ideas on what I can do?  I have tried switching it off but this doesn't work either.

You need to force quit whatever is happening to you.  Try a reset, reboot.  Hold the home and sleep button until the apple logo appears.  Ignore the red slider.
What may be happening is that the set up for your hot mail account is wrong or has failed, and if you have push or fetch turned on, one of the first things the pad will do is to establish contact, and check your mail.  If it cannot get through because of the set up, it comes to a stop, wanting you to fix that problem.
If you have a wifi only, try to start up the pad where there is no signal.  And if your have 3 g, turn it off.  You want the pad to thing there is no signal, so dont try to look for the mail.
What happens if you push home from that screen?  It should goto the home page.  Then go immediately to settings, mail, and either fix the setting, or delete the account and start over.  But turn off push or fetch until you get it sorted out.

Any clues on what this is, and/or how to bypass it? If I can report this to someone? Thanks

Sure sounds like malware, unles you installed something from a questionable site, then it's still malware but in a payware form as playing DVDs is free on Mac's.
Unless the DVD has software on it perhaps?
Does this work on any movie DVD or is this a special kind of DVD with software on it from someplace?

  • Is there a new Youview Box, any faster?

    Hi all,
I like the idea of the Youview box and we have had it a while now in fact we are out contract in a week or so, however what I don't love is how sluggish the device is on a whole. Compared to a sky box or other Humax boxes that don't have all the fancy menus. For me, either make the menus more basic, or put better hardware in the Youview box so that it can move faster through the guide.
How many times a day I press the guide or some other button again thinking I haven't pressed it on the remote, only for it to pop up and then go away again, so annoying its untrue.
So is there a newer model available from BT, I know there is a newer model from Humax, I want one like on the adverts as it shifts throught the menus on there. If I sign up for another year can I request a new box, they can have this one back I'm not bothered about keeping it. Just want a little bit more juice in the box for a more speedy interaction when I want to watch something.
    Thanks

There is no faster box. The other humax is just a different colour and with a bigger hard drive, other than that, it is identical.

  • Logical table does not join to any logical table

    HI,
I want to implement Business Unit hierarchy for drill down in OBIEE  so I’ve created a custom table with the hierarchy information,
I’ve imported that table in the out-of the box physical schema & defined a relationship between the W_ORG_D table & my custom INVENTRY_ORG table as INVENTRY_ORG.BU_ID = W_ORG_D. VIS_PR_BU_ID* but when I try to check in my changes I’m getting the following error.*
Logical table INVENTRY_ORG does not join to any logical table.
Kindly let me know how to resolve this error. One more doubt i have is can we import custom tables in the out of the box OBIEE mappings for SIEBEL..that is the core subject area.
    Thanks,

    Hi user10340125 ,
    1) I think you have joined tables in physical layer, but you have not created complex join in logical layer.
Check your consistency and see what warnings you are getting.
    2) Yes you can import custom tables in whatever subject area. Once you imported tables in physical layer, then they all are just objects, so you can freely play around with them. Just for best practices, make sure you follow proper naming convention for custom tables and columns..

  • Connecting Youview box to DVD and TV. Now ordinary...

Hi, Does anyone know how to connect a TV, BT Youview box and a DVD recorder together.  I have two SCART, one RF and one Aerial connection together but now we cannot watch our ordinary TV.  I need this for my son.  It is probably a simple connection error but we can't work it out.  Any help greatly appreciated

Put the aerial feed in to the YouView box 'antenna in' and connect a cable from the YouView 'aerial out' to the 'aerial in' on your TV. Connect YouView box HDMI out to HDMI socket on your TV if you have one. If not connect the YouView to SCART to your TV SCART. Connect your DVD player to the other SCART socket.
Use the AV setting on your TV to switch to the YouView box and:
Go in to you YouView menu as follows:
YouView/Settings/Device Management and make sure 'RF Loop Through' is set to ON.
This will allow you to access your own TV's tuner and YouView also.
Use the 'AV' setting on your TV to switch between TV's own tuner, YouView and your DVD player.
HDMI is preferable but if you don't have any HDMI sockets - and most TVs do these days - then SCART will have to do.
I hope you get it working.

  • Original Humax Youview box - no picture.

    Hi.
Over the month or so my Youview box has been behaving very oddly. When it wakes from sleep very often I get no picture and no sound. My TV says "no input" on the HDMI.
The box starts booting with the "Nearly ready" graphic showing... then when the TV picture should appear I get nothing. The remote still works though and I can change channels.
Sometimes it works fine. Sometimes turning it off and on again brings it to life. Sometimes the only thing that brings the box to life is to do a factory reset in maintance mode.
Maybe this is a software issue? Has anyone else experienced this, or do any of the mods know what my course of action should be?
    Thanks!

Sorry for the late reply - I've been away... Couldn't see a link in your profile for "contact the mods".
I don't think is anything to do with the tuner, because the channel name and number are shown in the LED matrix display on the front of the Humax..
I had a bad night with the box last night, just decided randomly to stop showing the picture and cut off the sound. Put it into standby and back on again and everything would come back to life.. Tried it this morning and got the purple screen. Powered off with the switch on the back, waited a while. Turned back on, this time I'm getting nothing - not even the "nearly ready" screen... But as ever, the channels are still shown on the LED display and Ican change channels with the remote.
Looks like another maintance mode reset when I get home for work
Should I just try to get customer services to send me a new box? Is that how this works? Haha. Any further help/suggestions/ideas would be appreciated!
    Thanks

  • Quick question re Infinity upgrade / YouView box

Been with BT for TV and broadband for several years.  Until recently we were using silver TV box but a few weeks ago we upgraded to Infinity and received what we assumed was the most up-to-date TV box.  Since discovered it's not (it's a H3 box).
Is there a way of getting a G4 box at no extra cost?  Or is this another case of companies like BT treating loyal customers like second class ones compared with new customers (who I believe do receive the new G4 box)?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

For those who were still on the silver BT Vision+ boxes there were three main options.
    (1)  Take up BT of the offer of a free BT Youview+ box.
    Pros:
    The box was free.
Any customers on an old TV PAYG package could stay on it with no fixed monthly costs.
    Coms:
The BT Youview+ box was only the 3rd generation one and not the latest fourth generation.
You had to commit to BT Broadband for another 18 months.
Any current broadband or calls discounts would still end as originally stated.
    (2)  Start a new BT TV contract in the normal manner.
    Pros:
You got the latest fourth generation BT Youview+ box.
You only have to commit to BT TV for 12 months.
You could negotiate a new BT Broadband contract possibly with new discounts either now or once the oroginal minimum term was completed.
    Cons:
The BT Youview+ box cost £35.
The new BT TV subscription cost at least £5 per month.
    (3)  Let the BT TV service end.
    Pros:
    Saved any TV costs.
No change to your current BT broadband contract.
    Cons:
You've got no BT TV service and can't even use the old silver box as a Freeview PVR.
It sounds as though you chose (1). Some others chose (2) or (3).
No such thing as a totally free lunch!

  • Teardrop-shaped overlay when using YouView box

    Hi,
I've got a minor problem. When using the YouView box, a teardrop-shaped overlay has appeared. The overlay will be static at times, and also jump slightly. It's not the first time this has happened, but I can't remembered what got rid of it the first time. This time, after starting in the top left, it's now migrated right to the middle of the screen.
Obviously I'd rather not reform a compete reset on the box (the last time it happened, I didn't), so any wisdom would be gratefully appreciated. Steps I've already performed:
Switching the box off at the mains
    Leaving it off overnight
    Switching between different HDMI cables
Unplugging the Ethernet cable. Reconnecting it.
Checking for software update, and rescanning for new TV channels.
    Staring angrily at it.
Like I said, any help would be great.
    Thanks.

Just a guess really but have you got anything plugged in the usb port? or registered a device on either apple or Android using the youview app. I mention this because the shape looks a bit like a large mouse pointer?
Thank you! Days of headscratching, all because of a USB charging hub plugged into the back of the box. The 'teardrop' may very well have been a mousepointer.
    Thanks again!

  • Youview box stange activity.

Ok I've been noticing this for some time now everyday at 5am to 5:30am I hear my youview box in my bed room power up and can hear HDD activity for a good thirty minutes. Anyone got any clues what it could be I have no recordings set for this time of day so it shouldn't be doing this really.

The youview box does require a stronger signal than a TV due to it having a dual tuner. Have you checked signal strength on the YV box in the settings?

  • BT Youview+ Box questions

I need a new PVR, would be grateful for help on BT's latest box...
Can you get Youtube on it?
Does downloading BBC Iplayer, Youtube, count towards my monthly Broadband usage?
If I record programs via aerial and Freeview tuner in the box, they will then be sitting on the box's hard drive. Is there any way to move them off the hard drive to an external device e.g. USB stick, to archive them?
Does engineer install box or self-install?
Never had a BT TV product before - thinking of £5 per month TV Essential package 12 months contract. £35 activation charge and I think £6.95 p&p for the box. Am currently on Standard Broadband but changing to Infinity when engineer arrives in January.
    Thanks for any advice.

    No.

No. Data used by the BT Youview box does not count towards a BT Broadband monthly allowance.

No. The content providers are very keen to protect their material and modern PVR's are becoming more and more locked down. The USB slot is only used for an external keyboard as far as I can remember.
Does engineer install box or self-install?
Normally self-install. Three input cables - power, TV aerial, and ethernet from BTHomeHub. Two output cables - HDMI or SCART to TV, and optional aerial pass-through to TV.
If you need some help or would like a long ethernet cable installed then you can ask for a BT TV engineer installation. I believe it is normally £35. If you need a TV aerial installed it costs a separate £120 and requires a separate appointment by a partner of BT.
Never had a BT TV product before - thinking of £5 per month TV Essential package 12 months contract. £35 activation charge and I think £6.95 p&p for the box. Am currently on Standard Broadband but changing to Infinity when engineer arrives in January.
If you wait until after Infinity is activated the BT web pages should then show the correct BT TV services and offers available to your home with Infinity.
If you would rather get Infinity and BT TV activated at the same time so the contract start dates line up you might be able to add BT TV to an existing Infinity order. That might also mean you get a BT TV engineer installation for free if required as one engineer will probably set up the lot if notified in advance.
If you are not sure about needing TV Entertainment then starting off on TV Essential is not a bad idea as you can always upgrade at any time later. BT are always happy to take more money off you! You can still add the free BT Sport Infinity multicast channels to TV Essential.
