Any loss of quality with iPhone from 256 to 128 kbps

I have to decompress my iTunes songs for my iPhone as I have them as AIFF.
Is there any loss of quality with the limits of the iPhone if I use 128 kb instead of256 ?
Thanks,
Greg

Greg, I don't think you will notice a big deal of a difference.

  • Changing the encoding to 256 kbps from the standard 128 kbps

I just read an article on the Internet about earbuds, especifically the Shure 4c, in which it was "highly reccomended" to change the encoding to higher levels such as 256 kbps from the "standard" 128 kbps.
The question is, once you have all your songs in iTunes downloaded at the standard 128 kbps, how do you change the encoding to 256 kbps, without deleting everything and transfering all your CDs, etc, all over again? Can it be done without the obvious, do it all over?
    Thanks

Pedro, this will not be possible. You can't convert a lower bitrate to a higher one & gain anything in quality. The maximum data has already been compressed & removed under the lower bitrate & can't be put back. If you truly want the benefits of the higher bitrate, it would be much better to re-import your CD's at the 256 bitrate. Post back if you have any questions.

  • Loss of bitrate when converting from 256 kbps to 128 kbps

    Hi everyone,
I had over 800 MP3s of various bitrates which I converted to 256 kbps AAC format in iTunes, in order to standardise them all, then deleting the originals. However, I was then told by a friend that if I simply reconverted the new ones to 128 kbps but still saving them in AAC format, I would save on half the disk drive space. Since memory is at a premium on my computer, I did just that but the results in iTunes show that the songs have since turned out in various different bitrates again, ranging from 99 kbps to 103, 105, 107, 123 etc. The settings in Preferences are as I left them, AAC Encoder with High Quality (128 kbps). I realise that this is not such a big issue in terms of listening and playback but I am curious as to why iTunes has decided to dictate the individual bitrate for each song despite my settings. Any comments or feedback would be much appreciated, thanks!

  • Loss of connection with Broadband from modem/hub.

    Hi guys,
Just had BT Infinity installed last Friday and within an hour of the engineer leaving, the blue broadband light on the HH3 turned to Red.  After going through all the troubleshooting you get from the page that displays when you try and access the Internet, I couldn't find anything wrong, tried restarting the HH3 and turning it off and on again with no resolution.
I then decided to power off the white openreach modem even though the DSL light was still lit and green and hey presto, after this restarted and I restarted the hub again, it came back on.
The problem is that since then, I am losing the connection in exactly the same way every few hours.  Sometimes in the space of a few minutes and this is highly frustrating when the hub is downstairs and my PC is upstairs and I have to keep going up and down to reset it.  Using Hub manager to restart the hub has no effect as I need to restart the modem as well.
The engineer did say that the speed will go up and down over the next 10 days and you may lose connection for a few minutes but the connection never comes back on again.  Yesterday morning I noticed it had disconnected so left it all day while at work and still no connection when I came home.
Now being a Windows Network administrator, it seems to me that there is an issue with the hardware somewhere and I would think that the issue would be with the modem as this has to be restarted in order for the connection to come back on again.
Has anyone else had this same issue?  I had the old BT Home hub before on regular broadband and had no issues whatsover.  A colleague of mine said his father had the same issue and they had to replace his modem and hub because the engineer told him the hardware is rubbish and it kept burning out.
I don't want to have to spend more money getting a decent router, why should I?  BT should provide hardware that works and is of good quality.
Can anyone else comment on this or can any mods get involved please?  I'm starting to regret getting this after only 5 days!
    Many thanks
    John
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi John,
I've been going through exactly the same thing as you for the last 2-3 months. My first few weeks on Infinity were fine actually, then Homehub started dropping connection to the broadband a few times a day, now it's every 10-15 minutes. It's been ongoing for a couple of months now and last week I received a replacement Homehub after contacting one of the mods here. No change, in fact if anything it's worse. It's entirely useless to me to be honest, I can't watch anything online, play any games online and to work from home I have to use a 3G dongle (it's slow, but at least it stays on for longer than 15 minute intervals).
Anyway, needless-to-say my BT Infinity experience has been terrible so far. I've seen a few posts on here from people who have had what has sounded like a similar problem and they have swapped out the Homehub for a 3rd party router and have found it to solve the problem completely. It's something I have considered, but until BT actually admit to me that the cause of the problem is their crappy hardware then I'm not going to risk spending the money.
The mod that contacted me did mention that if the replacement hub doesn't fix the problem (it hasn't) then it might be an issue with the PPP session/RAS server and that he'd report the fault to BT Wholesale for me if that is the case. I e-mailed him this morning asking him to do so.
    Good luck!

  • Is there an audible loss of quality when converting from WMA to MP3/AAC?

Just wondering when I convert my WMA files to MP3 or AAC using EasyWMA, iTunes for WIndows, Switch or whatever, will there be an audible loss of quality in the conversion?
    Thanks.

There is always an audio quality degradetion while converting a compressed file from one codec to another. It may not be significant for everybody tough.
To avoid this degradation, you should compress your file from the original instead of passing from one codec to another.

  • Will any iPod charger work with iPhone

Does any (Apple) iPod charger work with iPhone? I would like to charge the phone in different places without carrying the wall charger with me all the time. I got my regular iPod charger and was hoping that I can use it. I noticed that the wall charger that comes with the phone has a lower amp rating than the iPod charger I have. I would think this shouldn't make a difference unless everything else (e.g., the connector wiring) is the same.
    Does anyone know for sure?
    Thanks

I believe so. Check this link http://www.apple.com/iphone/questionsandanswers.html scroll to the section Accessories for iPhone and read the first one.
I'd imagine if there was a problem they would have mentioned it. Also, if it makes you feel any better, I've been using iPod charger to charge my phone and so far it's been working fine.

  • Changes, or loss of quality when changing from Indexed Colour to RGB or Gray Scale?

I am using a canon scanner 700 to scan old photographs and plans/maps for high resolution publication. The plans and photographs are both in colour and in bl/wh and grayscale. I usually scan in gray scale unless its an important, coloured plan.
I am unable to scan through c5 for some reason. Its a 64 bit dell M4400, W7. All legal, all working fine.
I use the program canon supplies (Canon MP Navigator EX 2.1) and choose grayscale, 1200 dpi. No problem so far. Output seems great when I open in photoshop.
However, the files open in Indexed Colour mode, and not grey scale as I scanned them in.
    My questions are :
    a) why does it open in indexed colour mode?
    b) is there any loss of information if I simply change them into grey scale?
I need the files in high res for professional publication in large format, but also for analysis of dimensions. So I cannot afford ANY transformation or loss of info.
Hope somebody can help me out!

  • CR2 to DNG. Any loss of quality or funcionality?

    Hi.
So, the same questions arise with me but I can't get a definitive answer...
    1. Adobe Bridge CS3 (and I presume CS4 as well) will "Convert to DNG" upon importing from your card reader. It's a simple checkbox option. Will this function convert 5DMK2 CR2 files to DNG properly or do I need to use the standalone Adobe DNG Converter because only Bridge CS4 will do it right?
    2. If I process a CR2 file in ACR and make adjustments, then convert the CR2 to DNG, what happens to my edits saved in the XMP sidecar? Does it come along for the ride or is the XMP file now ignored forever?
    3. Are there any features/benefits/downfalls in converting to DNG first then processing it in ACR? Anything that a CR2 file offers that a DNG file does not? Is there an ACR function that is now grayed out or something?
    4. Is the quality of a DNG identical to the CR2 file? Same file size too?
    5. Will presets I've created in ACR to run against CR2 files also run against DNG files?
    6. If I convert a CR2 file to DNG and open it in, say DPP, then make changes such as sharpening and noise reduction, then open that DNG in ACR, are those changes seen or ignored?
    7. People have said "Convert to DNG. Who knows how long you will be able to read CR2 files." I'm not sure how this statement holds water -- the DNG format was only released in late 2004. It's not a long-standing standard. I could make the argument that both CR2 and DNG files have an equal chance of becoming obsolete or changing drastically. Thoughts about this?
I've worked with raw files and a 40D for a long time now and my workflow is great for me: Import into Bridge --> Edit in ACR. If I get the new 5DMK2 I would hate to lose this functionality and I'm willing to upgrade to CS4, but why bother if CS3 Bridge's "Convert to DNG" function will convert it upon import, or if the new DNG Converter will do a whole directory in a few minutes... but I need to be sure that I don't lose any quality or functionality by doing this... and, if I decide to convert a whole year's worth of CR2/XMP files to DNG for long-term compatibility reasons, I need to be sure that all my XMP edits come along for the ride. If not, that's hundreds of hours of work gone... I might as well export to hi-quality JPG.
    Thanks,
    -Dave

  • ICal syncs with iPhone from Mac but won't sync Outlook events

    Hi,
I want to get all of my events from my Mac 2011 Outlook to sync through iCloud with iCal for my MacBook and iPhone. I've been able to get the events to show in iCal on my MacBook when I accept them from outlook, but they won't then sync with my iPhone unless I plug it into my computer? Is there any way to fix this? I also can't change any of the Outlook events once they're in iCal, I have to do so straight from outlook. The outlook events come in in their own calendar called "no category" that's grey. Any suggestions?

  • DVI - VGA -Any loss of quality?

    Hi,
I'm awaiting delivery of my Mac Pro and am in need of two monitors. I can't afford the Apple displays but i was wondering if quality is lost when connecting VGA monitors via the VGA to DVI adaptor? The reason is i can get two 22" LG L225WS-SF displays for £275 but they are VGA not DVI.
Also is VGA going to die a death or is it with us for a while?
Message was edited by: Mark Thornton

A DVI to VGA adapter won't affect the image quality. It just passes the analog video signals from the graphics board to a VGA connector. For LCDs, DVI can give a slightly sharper picture, but the difference is not always noticeable.

  • Loss of quality on Import from Camera

    Hi
Im importing footage from my camera to FCP, they are mini DV tapes, and Im just coming in through the fire wire using capture. When the footage gets in to FCP it looks a bit grainy and darker. Does the quality of my camera have anything to do with it?

Never ever judge the quality of your footage using the computer monitors. They do not show you what the footage truely looks like. Connect a TV to the system:
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Loss of quality in conversion from 16 to 8 bit

Hi, I have a raw image taken with a Canon G12 and converted to 16 bit psd file.  When converting to 8 bit I notice a significant loss of oomph to the image - iI don't know how to describe it but it seems a little washed out, a lack of saturation, contrast or vibrance or something.  Still not bad but not as good.  With 16M colors available in 8 bit images, is this normal or have I got a setting wrong somewhere eg color space etc ?  TIA

Hi. Progress!  I paid more attention to the conversion process and converted a 16 bit image (with Photoshop CS5 Extended 64bit),
to 8 bit using the menu Image/Mode/8 bit, and the appearance of the images is identical in Photoshop CS5.  This would seem to rule out monitor issues.
However when viewed in PSE8,  a significant amount of vibrance/brightness/saturation (for want of a better term) is absent from the 8 bit image.  Alternatively, or perhaps in addition to that, the 16 bit seemed to have MORE vibrance/brightness/saturation than the PSCS5 version. I checked the color settings in PSE8 and I had "Optimize for printing" checked so I changed it to "optimize for screen" and updated thumbnails, and there was no change to the discrepancy between the two copies of the photo in question. Could there be a difference in the way PSE8 displays 16 bit and 8 bit images or the way PSE8 uses information recorded by CS5/ACR 6.3 during the conversion from Canon raw .cr2 to .psd 16bit?  i.e. does PSCS5/ACR 6.3 record in the psd file, the tweaks made during the conversion from cr2 to psd, and this information be used during display in PSE8 somehow?  TIA again.

  • How to transfer pictures to a CD without any loss of quality

I made some adjustments in Aperture, pictures were shot in RAW and wanted to put them on a Cd for transfer to a relative.
I dragged and dropped and the size reduced from RAW 13-19 mb to 600k jPeg.
I do not have a problem with the jPeg, actually my relative prefers it but I do not want the large reduction in size.
I just got Aperture so please forgive me if I am missing the obvious.
    Greg

I do not have a problem with the jPeg, actually my relative prefers it but I do not want the large reduction in size.
To be honest you shouldn't be  concerned with the size of the image you're giving to your friends. What matters is the quality of the image for use they will put it to. If you can get that in a file thats 100 bytes so be it, if that doesn't  give them the quality they need then of course increase the quality. Bit always be thinking in terms of image quality for the intended use not file size.
So are the files you're producing of adequate quality? If not there are two ways to go about increasing the quality.
One is to increase the quality of the previews that Aperture is producing. This will allow you yto continue to drag the images out of Aperture and  not have to go through the export process. To increase the preview quality go to Aperture->Preferences->Previews. You can adjust both image size and JPG compression. Remember changing the preview settings only affects previews made after the change. Previews already in Aperture will not be upgraded . To upgrade current previews you need to force Aperture to re-create them. See the Photos->[Delete/Generate] Previews.
If you can't get the quality you need with previews then you will need to export the images. Then you have complete control over all aspects of the exported image.
Either way remember its the quality of the image not the files size that matters.
