Any news about Mountain Lion not closing open files / folders on smb server shares?

Hey Apple, anyone listening?
Are there any new about this issue, where Mac clients cannot move/edit/rename each others files and folders on a smb server share? We are a graphics work group in an otherwise Windows-centered enterprise. We have mac clients with OS X 10.5.8, 10.6.8, and recently 10.8.5. None of the older clients can work with files or folders created by the new machine, meaning that InDesign files will open read only, files and folders cannot be moved or renamed. This is absolutely critical in a flexible work environment, where any graphics designer must be able to jump into any other project on short notice.
As mentioned in other threads around the web, this seems to be a problem not with file permissions but with the finder not releasing/closing files and folders correctly when not actually in use. (a known issue is the fact, that i.e. Acrobat pdf must not be viewed in column views preview, if anyone else wants to overwrite that file, but this issue here goes much further). We urgently need a fix for that!
I'm really desparate about this topic, since the IT-department is already reluctant to offer mac support and to look into these problems; if there is no solution to this, we will be switched to windows workstations by the end of the year ... Apple, do you want that? We surely don't!
A frustrated user

Hi,
thanks for your answer. Does that mean, that there is a solution to this on the server side?  Is this ACL stuff a matter of setting up the server correctly, rather than a problem with mountain lion's networking?
If i could be sure about this, I would approach our IT department... (the are just waiting for some Mac User pestering them ) ...

  • Navigating through photos in single-photo view in iphoto with trackpad is not working after installing new OS Mountain lion

I have recently download new OS Mountain lion on my macbook (white late 2010 model). I had snow leopard before.
On iphoto, when i was viewing my photos in a single-photo view (double clicking on a photo), i was unable to go to the next photo/previous photo using my trackpad. Only way i could do this was by pressing arrow buttons on my key board.
If i remember correctly, i was able to do this by using 3 fingers (sliding left to right or sliding right to left) on snow leopard.
I can navigate back and foward on my internet browser using two fingers. And yes, i have tried using my two fingers on iphoto but nothing happens.
I have checked my trackpad setting and everything seems to be right.
Any ideas how i could fix this?
    Thank You
    p.s. i have iphoto 09

This works here - but I'm on iPhoto 11. IIRC it worked on 09 too though.
    It's not working for me.

As the others have stated, you're on Mountain Lion with 10.8, anything. But you can check your version of the software by going to the apple in the upper left corner of the screen and clicking it and selecting "About This Mac". That will open a box that shows your software version. Once there you can click on "More Info" that will tell you everything about your specific mac configuration.
    Welcome to the Mac family.

  • Mountain Lion not stable kept on crashing

Upgraded to Mountain Lion a week ago which seems good for a day then it kept on causing at least Apple Mail, Google Chrome, Finder and other Apps becoing "Not Responding".  Can't even get out except forced shut downn with the Start Button.  Even downloaded a new version of ONYX hoping to clean up the Mac but each time Apps kept on "Not Responding"
Has anyone experienced these symptoms ? and if so, how did you get the new OSX Mountain Lion to be in a stabalise state would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks in Advanced !

Most of the cases where this is happening right now seem to be related to 3rd party kernel extensions which are incompatible with Mountain Lion.  It's easy to see if you have any 3rd party extensions by running this command from Terminal:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 } '
Go ahead and run that and paste the results back here.
The one that seems to be most commonly involved in my experience is Air Display:

  • General question about Mountain Lion

I've kept clear of Lion on both my MACS because of all the "bad press" it got, I'm still running Snow Leopard on my MACS and I've never had a day of problems with either. Also I run Logic Studios on both my MACS and didn't want to chance having issues with interface compatability, lack of drivers and such. My question is kind of simple and for better or worse comes down to opinion, what is the general feeling about Mountain Lion? Is it a big improvement over Lion? Is it more stable with less bugs? Any issues running Logic? I'm "playing with the idea" of upgrading but I want to do my research first. If Mountain Lion is not a big improvement over Lion or if people are having issues with running Logic I'm going to stick with SL.
Thanks for your opinions in advance.

Be cautious about listening too much to replies you're likely to get. These sort of questions in a place like this are like magnets to people who are having problems and want to complain about it. You're likely to hear some horror stories that don't represent the majority of cases.
ML has been excellent so far for me, faster than Lion and no serious bugs I've discovered so far. But if you upgrade, be sure to do your homework: backup, check compatibility of all your software (including things like printer drivers) and repair the hard drive with Disk Utility before installing.

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I cannot open my File Maker Pro files. Can I use Numbers to open these files?

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I cannot open my File Maker Pro files. Can I use Numbers to open these files?

Numbers is a spreadsheet program and FileMaker is a database program, so you probably can't use Numbers to open them unless you had first exported them from FileMaker in a spreadsheet-compatible format.
If you upgraded from 10.6 Snow Leopard or earlier and your old copy of FileMaker won't open anymore, it might be a PowerPC application that is not compatible with 10.7 and later. If that is the case, to work with your FileMaker files you should upgrade your copy of FileMaker to the latest version, which seems to be FileMaker 12.

My problem is after updating to Yosemite does my mail client any longer. You mean the default OS X mail app? Try reinstalling OS X Yosemite if that's the case.
If you are referring to 3rd party mail applications, that's a compatibility issue. Some apps don't work in the new operating system. You have to wait until the developer updates the app, or you have to revert back to Mavericks to continue using it.

  • Does OS X Mountain Lion not include MPI (Message Passing Interface)?

    Hi,
Does OS X Mountain Lion not include MPI (Message Passing Interface) as Lion did? I need that to compile CUDA 5.0 examples.
I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8 without any updates yet.

I take this statment from the link I posted
Note: Unlike most UNIX-based operating systems, OS X does not use a preallocated disk partition for the backing store. Instead, it uses all of the available space on the machine’s boot partition.
to basically mean it's limited only by the disk space.
    There is also this:
Both OS X and iOS include a fully-integrated virtual memory system that you cannot turn off; it is always on. Both systems also provide up to 4 gigabytes of addressable space per 32-bit process. In addition, OS X provides approximately 18 exabytes of addressable space for 64-bit processes. Even for computers that have 4 or more gigabytes of RAM available, the system rarely dedicates this much RAM to a single process.
To give processes access to their entire 4 gigabyte or 18 exabyte address space, OS X uses the hard disk to hold data that is not currently in use. As memory gets full, sections of memory that are not being used are written to disk to make room for data that is needed now. The portion of the disk that stores the unused data is known as the backing store because it provides the backup storage for main memory.

  • I am getting error "The disk is used for Time Machine Backup" when installing the new OSX Mountain Lion upgrade"

I am keep getting this error "The disk is used for Time Machine Backup" when installing the new OSX Mountain Lion" when doing the upgrade to newly OS.

The folder would be at the root of your hard drive. Double-click Macintosh HD and look there.
If it isn’t there, I’m not sure what it is seeing.

  • Why is Mountain Lion not available for Mac Pro 2007???

Why is Mountain Lion not available for Macpro 2007 eventhough this computer is not having old generation hardware like of 15years ago's computers!! I am surprised to know about that. when this mac pro have 2 xeon processor, 8GB ram, OS 10.7.5 (Lion) etc etc. so why is this not compatible for mountain lion???
Very Sad for us - the buyer of so costly Macpro ....
so does the Apple want to say we should buy or upgrade our purchased costly apple products every 5 years ??!!

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Any news about release date of Jdeveloper 11g, will it have BPEL support?

    Hi
thank you for reading my post
Is there any news about oracle jdeveloper 11g?
will the release support BPEL development or there is another IDE comming for this purpose?
I know SOA SUITE 10g, but I am looking to see whether oracle release a soa suite 11g or something based on the new Jdeveloper?
New Jdeveloper has many features that ease the developer life when working in editor.
    Thanks

The BPM is still in a separate tool - since the people who use it are not developers and they probably don't want to use JDev for this high-level modeling.
If you think this should be integrated into JDeveloper, I'm sure the PMs for the SOA suite will be happy to hear about this. Use their forum:
