Any news on Closed Captioning support?

A new software version makes me hopeful knowing that almost all other Apple products now support CC. But I didn't see anything specific on their websie about it. Anyone have any update on this?

No updates or news or anything that I've seen. With the new rentals I might think about getting an Apple TV *IF* there were closed captions.

Interesting. He evidently has access to beta versions that the rest of us don't.

If Sean Reid is telling the truth, then the odds of x10 support being in the final 3.6 version just went up a bit.

• No Closed Captioning support in QT 10.3?

Hi,
I'm on Mavericks with a 3 year old iMac.
A friend sent me a closed-captioned Quicktime MOV file, which displays the CC text
on his Snow Leopard with QT 10.
Absolutely no options for that on my Mavericks' QT 10.3.
And then the Apple "help" site gives instructions as though it IS available.
Fortunately, I dug up an old QT 7 player and it works.
Was it an oversight of Apple to leave out this helpful option in their
recent editions of Quicktime?
Was it also an oversight of Apple to omit adding to their "help" page,
this very "helpful" clarification: "Sorry, Closed Captioning is Closed on All versions
of Quicktime past 10.xx"
I know it's asking a lot but ... REALLY APPLE!

This question came up today for one of our faculty who was using QuickTime 10.3 under MacOS X Yosemite 10.10.2. The solution we found was to open System Preferences, go to Accessibility, click on Captions on the left side of the window, and then check the "Prefer Closed Captions and SDH" checkbox. After you do this, restart QuickTime -- you will then be able to select Closed Captions from under the Subtitle menu in the video's control bar, or under the View -> Subtitles menu.
I wish Apple didn't require you to prefer Closed Captions in order for the option to show up at all in QuickTime -- this recent change they made does not seem like an improvement, and I hope they reconsider and restore the old functionality. Closed Captioning is used by many people who do not have special accessibility needs, for example, people who want to watch with sound turned off, or people learning a foreign language, and it shouldn't be this hard to turn Closed Captioning on.

• Any new update on Flash support on iPad

Hi All,
This was a long time question and I am asking this again - Will iPad support Flash > Browser(Safari)
I tried using SkyFire and found it was not as comfortable/similar when it was broswed using a web browser.
Also knowing it very well about the details referring. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2722456
Can any one help me to answer my client:
1. There are customers who are unaware of all these technoligies stuff and still they think iPad will come with Falsh support - How to answere there questions.
2. The iPad innovation will made every single source of FLASH file to convert them to HTML-5 to support the view in iPad. Which is again a rework and makes every flash developer to work on conversions.
I am little confused about the above list of items. and
Any answere will help me out.
In near future - hoping apples new ceo will do something on this
iPad 2 | 64 GB | 3G
Thanks,
ROCXY

It is doubtful that flash will ever be supported on the iPad : http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/ (and I doubt that that will change with a new CEO). Also Adobe have apparently given up on trying to create a version that works on iOS devices.
Third-party browser apps such as Skyfire, iSwifter and Puffin 'work' on some sites - but judging by the reviews not all sites.
The iPad supports HTML5 and more websites are either switching to HTML5 or a combination of HTML5 and flash - but it's not an overnight switch/change.

• Apple TV 2.0 WILL have Closed Captioning Support

see article from ilounge. Look at the 3rd picture from the bottom.
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/what-to-expect-from-apple-tv- 20-photos-and-details/
this is good news for a lot of people. Now if apple will add more CC movies to their list.

of course they wont. However 90% of DVD movies are encoded with captioning...the other 10% have subtitles. My point is that the movie houses should be able to handle the request (should apple choose to do so) to re-issue these movies to apple with CC inserted.

• Any news on Blu Ray Support?

just wondering if anyone knows anything about when DVD Studio and Compressor will support editing in Blue Ray format?
Seems a waste to film in 1920 x 1080p then have to show it in DVD Format.

You can edit in FCP and author a BD-R in Compressor. The menus are limited, but the process works just fine.
DVD Studio Pro makes DVDs.

For 10.2.0.4, use the method described by jsharma on this thread:
Support for Google Maps Projection 900913
This is included into the releases 11.2 and 10.2.0.5.

• Closed captions + SDH made a mess by Apple TV 6.0. Any fixes?

We've found that the Apple TV 6.0 software update made a mess of closed captions + SDH . It suddenly changed the size and color and font on its own. To make things worse, when we try to send them right with the new customizable closed caption style settings, we can't make them look like they did before the 6.0 software update. The customizable choices are too small, too large, or much too large than they were before.

The movies are not orphaned. There is a flaw in the latest version. There are several posts on this issue. Actually be happy they are on AppleTV. Several of us have purchased through iTunes. We sync, but when the computer loses the link with ATV requiring a new code. When the code is entered it re-syncs itunes and ATV, but you lose the movies that were transferred to ATV requiring you to move movies back to ATV.
They are probably working on a fix.

• Premiere will not import any of the recommended Caption formats

I have so far used qt.txt files to add open captions to my video projects.
I would like to work with captions within Premiere Pro and have watched Adobe's video on how to do it.
Recommended formats are .scc but several others are supposedly supported.
I have tried to import .scc files and various flavors of xml files and adobe caption files.
None of them are recognized as valid formats in my application.
Do I need a plugin that is not installed? Or enable something or another? or why would I not be able to import the files?
Thank you on beforehand.

By the way I am using CS6
That would be the problem. Closed Captioning support was completely overhauled in CC 7.0. Previously, support for captions was very limited. The workflow was simply to select a sequence in the Project panel, go to Sequence>Closed Captioning>Attach. You could then enable display of the captions in the Program Monitor, but you could not edit the caption content or control timing in any way.

• FCP and Closed Captions

I looked in my FCP manual and I cannot find any information on closed captioning. What I need to know is if the CC information is already recorded on my mini DV tape, then when I capture it to FCP does it retain that information? So then when I output back to tape will the CC information still be there? For an example of how this would be used... I work at a community college where our students produce a news show. While they tape the show (to mini DV) someone types the CC live and it is recorded to the mini DV tape. Since it is a student production there are sometimes mistakes. So after the show is taped a student will "post" the show in FCP before it is aired on our cable station. Right now we do not CC. But we have to start. So before they purchase equipment we need to know if this will work. Anybody know? Thanks.

I'm doing a show for a client that will run both nationally and locally. When we started they would be identical shows. We budgeted for CC. Then the client tells me he's sold three extra :30 spots for the local version. Um, okay.
So I told him to sell 2 more spots and we'll just cut one segment of the show that now has to time out to exactly 2:30 each week.
Ahhhh, first time producers.

• Closed Caption MPEG-2 Program Stream

According to the product page, Compressor 4 has the abbility to encode an .scc Closed Caption file to MPEG-2. Has anyone tried this? Has anyone had any success adding Closed Caption files with Compressor since version 2?

Mpeg 2 program stream is a single multiplexed file with audio & video both contained in it. For a dvd, I would normally create an mpg 2 & aiff file. The meeting is running off a server the city operates & it has to be delivered as a file, not a disc. Sorry, should've made that a little clearer in my initial post.

• NEW VIDEO DRIVER that supports U400?

The available graphics driver (Radeon Catalyst) for my U400 ideapad is last update in 2011 in the Lenovo website. Is there any new driver that can support my 6470M (switchable graphics)?

This is a proprietary "system" that includes the conversion cable + software. They work together and it appears they are Windows only. It may be possible to use the cable itself with a Mac but there is no software from Happague for Macs. Happauge provides no specs on the video conversion that the cable does, so there's no way to tell what software you might be able to use with it except by experiment.
My suggestion is to get an inexpensive miniDV camcorder. These connect to Macs via FireWire and can be used as webcams. Borrow one if possible for testing purposes. I have used them many times for webinars, Skyping, etc.

• Closed Caption for hearing-impaired!

Hey guys,
I am hearing-impaired, i need to know, Does anyone have any informaztion on closed captioning being available with Apple TV?
My hearing loss I cannot enjoy and movie or tv show without captions. My local Apple Store really didn't know if captioning would be included or not but they said they would be setting up a system in the store to try.
Thanks

"selected" content has closed captions (not all).
any content that does have them will have the CC logo displayed in the store.

• HT4613 But does new Apple TV HD support closed captioning?

Apple TV HD is new and small; but does it step forward software-wise to support Closed Captioning, and SubTitles?

It's a software issue plain and simple in my view (on AppleTV's side). I don't think the optical hardware is limited - it's unlikely Apple would have sourced a non-standard optical solution and seeing as they come with the ability to do better quality audio I'd imagine this does too.
Yes Macs support at least 24/96 over optical as I've just reattached my Mini to a Yamaha DSP to play some 24/96 studio masters from Linn.
Greg Jarvis wrote:
Wait a minute peeps - this isn't necessarily a problem with iTunes. AFAIK iTunes does support 24-bit output - if you play a 24-bit ALE audio file via optical out of your Mac, it's 24-bit audio as far as I'm aware.
I was under the impression that the issue is with the ATV optical output itself - it's limited to 16-bit.

• Does Elements support imported closed-captioning?

Using Elements 2.0. Ripped a self-produced DVD containing closed captioning on it (line 21); added that media to Elements; the resulting exported MPEG had no closed-captioning on it, or none was detected by the "ccextractor". Trying to determine if the closed captioning is lost in Elements, or if the MPEG player does not recognize line 21 - it's an Adtec Soloist Pro-HD. Thanks for any suggestions or help.

PrE supports no CC, or Subtitles (the real ones, and not just lower-thirds burned into the video).
I do not believe that PrPro will do this either.
Now, going the other direction, Encore, the authoring app bundled with PrPro, will allow Line 21 on DVD-Video (and BD, IIRC), but that is the wrong direction.
Since Line 21 is a function to be dictated via menu (or remote) on a DVD-Video, I rather doubt that you'll find many, if any, NLE's that can rip it off the DVD.
Good luck,
Hunt
