After multiple restarts. reinstalls, resets, formatting, and everything that is listed on the Apple site concerning how to trouble shoot the iPod, I still have the following problems with my iPod:
The music that is currently on my iPod was from a sync that did not complete. I started the sync to include all music which at this time is over 2000 songs and what happens is the sync stops part way through without completing the sync.
Right now there are songs on my iPod but if I go to settings > about > it shows 0 songs, 0 videos, 0 tv shows but yet there is space being taken up on the iPod by music and video.
When connecting my iPod I get the message that the contents of my iPod cannot be read and that I need to use the summary button to restore my iPod but my iPod never shows up so I have to enter the iPod via disk mode and format the iPod.
While transferring music I get and error 49 that an unknown error has occurred and I also get error 50 sporadically but it is listed as an unknown error.
When I do get the music to show up on my iPod, after about the 3rd song on a shuffle, the iPod will freeze requiring me to reset the iPod. I have to do this continually and sometimes when I do it, the music on my iPod disappears and the battery drains. When the iPod freezes, I can feel the drive inside working and clicking at that time.
I am currently running iTunes 7.0 and have software version 1.2 on the iPod.
I have run virus scans, adware scans, check disk to fix errors and look for bad sectors.
I recently had to stop a format of the iPod after 12 hours when it had only completed 10% with nothing on the iPod.
I am running a Dell Inspiron XPS, 3.4Ghz Pentium 4, 512mg RAM. The iPod is a 5G 30Gb Video purchased 13 Jul 06 while on R&R leave from Iraq.
Please respond quickly since I will be mailing this iPod back to my wife in the states for either refund, replacement or repair in that order. Thanks.

If you have carefully follow ALL of the steps in that article, you are using a USB port directly on your computer and not a USB hub (don't use a front port on a tower or desktop either, as they are an internal hub) and you installed iTunes correctly using an Administrator ID and you have tried disabling your antivirus and firewall then there is no hope of it ever working. Look at the tip again, and go through it carefully, not skipping any steps.
Note, BTW, that an iPhone will not show up on a computer, only in iTunes. If there are photos in the Camera Roll then it will appear in Windows as a digital camera only.

Might be hard to find, but long ago there were a couple of Firewire<->SCSI adapters, if you have USB2 those might be available also...

IPad wifi connection drops - have tried evereything - any other suggestions

Hi all,
I'm experiencing the connectivity issue with my iPad whereby randomly it will stop transmitting data (ie cant go on the Internet). The Wifi symbol is till shown, but there is no data throughput whatsoever. To fix, I have to turn off the wifi on the iPad and turn it on again.
There doesn't seem to be any consistency to when this happens. It isn't related to coming out of sleep or the type of apps I am running. sometimes it will happen in quick succession, other times it won't happen for a few hours or maybe until the next day.
There are two iPhones, a Mac mini and and Vista laptop on the same network and none of them experience this problem. The router is a Sky broadband wireless router. It is set to WPA security.
I have tried:
- upgrading to firmware 3.2.2 and doing a restore
- resetting network settings on iPad
- restarting router
- changing channel of router (have tried 4 different channels so far)
- switching router from mixed (b/g) mode to just g
- forgetting network and reconnecting on iPad
- moving closer to router
- disabling auto-brightness
- setting brightness to maximum
- changing DNS on iPad
I have also tried most tips on this page with no joy:

It just seems like nothing is going to work, and I am considering returning this to Apple in the hope of either a replacement or a fix. This problem is really annoying and clearly and issue with the iPad as many other devices have no problems. Even if a replacement router may fix this, clearly the iPad is at fault here.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? If not, what do you think will happen if I take this back to Apple? Perhaps I can get a guarantee that they'll swap it with the next-gen iPad when it comes out?

I don't have any real words of help except to say I went through something similar with an iMac. It would drop and pick up the wireless signal repeatedly but often sat there unable to connect. That was solved by something weird, like turning off the "show on screen" option for the airport wireless signal. I don't think you can alter that setting on the iPad though. My point is, if this was a problem out of the box I could see it being the iPad and that maybe getting a replacement unit would work (my wife recently bought a cheap B&N reader that would not access the wireless network, replaced it and everything worked). But if this is a problem that developed over time or just started out of the blue, then maybe it is a corrupted file or something that could be fixed with reinstalling the system. I know when you sync an iPod and iPhone with iTunes you have the option of wiping everything and reinstalling, so I am assuming it's an option for the iPad too. If you haven't tried reinstalling, perhaps that can be a next step.

Restore from iTunes. It is hard to say if you want to backup or rather revert to an old backup. I would recommend to save the previous backups to a safe place and then backup the current state and later test the backups incase your iPhone comes back to proper life.

I had this problem last month. I ended up having to get a new iPhone 4S. It's a very, very common problem and in my opinion it should be covered by Apple for free since it is so popular and is an obvious hardware defect especially in the iPhone 4S.
So I suggest you order a new iPhone ($230 with no warranty) ($50 with Apple Care+). And while you wait for your new iPhone to come you could back up your iPhone and try some of the YouTube fixs. I put mine in a plastic bag (off with no air in the bag) in the freezer for 30 minutes, pulled it out, turned it back on, let the iPhone thaw out in the bag, and it then worked again for over a week before it died again. But I would only try that if you knew you had a new iPhone on the way. My cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth all went out so I had nothing to lose.

Thank you. I didn't know about the universal access adjustment. All the way left is a little better, but still much fainter than on my own imac. I'm not sure why apple uses grey typeface, but it's so faint on this imac monitor that it was difficult to find the "reply" option on this post. Are there any other suggestions? thank you

Which kind of account you are using?
If you are using a business account （ for example [email protected]) you must set POP account info properly, filling all the blank fields (name, email address, description, password, Host Name, user's name, SMTP). Just one field blanked causes error in sending/receiving.
If you are using a default account (iCloud, Yahoo!, Hotmail...), fill all the blanck fields (Name, Email account, Password, Description） and sign in.
If not works, delete the account and sign in again

If you are talking about the screen-lock passcode, thate means that the restore never successfully completed.
Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.
- Next try the manual install method of:
iDevice Troubleshooting 101 :: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Place the iPod in recovery mode after the firmware download is complete and then restore using the instructions in the article. Sometimes recovery mode timeouts and returns to disabled before the firmware download is complete.
- Then try on another computer

You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can’. So now I am trying to copy my back-up files to another disk so I can reformat it. But when I try to do that, the following text appears: The backup files can’t be copied because the backup volume doesn’t have ownership enabled. The problem is that I can’t enable the ownership of the back-up volume.

You may be able to restore individual items, or even an entire backup, as long as you don't happen to hit the damaged area(s). But yes, your only real option is to erase the disk and start over. You probably don't know yet what caused it. If it's the disk failing, obviously you need a new one. Other things that can cause disk corruption are power blips, being disconnected improperly, or your Mac crashing or losing power while the disk is connected, especially during a backup.
For power problems, the best solution is a U.P.S. (battery backup) system. A good surge protector will protect against power spikes, but not dips or sudden loss of power.

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

You mean take the cover off of the iPhone, to look inside? I'd recommend against it. Even with warranty expired, you might qualify for an out-of-warranty service, which for 3GS is $149.
Other than that, any repair/service options are going to cost money. You might want to see if a wireless carrier will let you get a new contract & phone.
Out of curiousity, you're just using at as, basically, an iPod Touch, if there's no cell provider? Did I understand that correctly?
