Any Preventive Maintenence?

Just Wondering,
I have been reading some of the posts about dying G-5's and wondering about something. I'm new to mac but built a few pc's ,not afraid to dig into a computer case. I have changed a dvd r/w and added a hard drive and swapped video cards in the mac but never even looked at the cooling system. Is there any p.m. to do this (ie. tighten clamps ,fittings etc)other than the norm keep the dust out to keep the heat/ "head" pressure down?
On a second note I've read about alot of psu failures but none have seemed to taken out the whole system( or I missed them) My first pc built roaasted after 3 1/2 yrs when the psu fried and literally fried the motherboard, vid card, memory only harddrive survived (thankfully)
My g-5 is going on 4 years but WOW psu's for this thing are not something I want to change on a whim. Really like this computer and dont want to spring for a new one, so was just wondering.
Kurt

Hi Kurt,
I took the whole system apart to clean it up including the powersupply, here's my post
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8932561#8932561
I stuck a very thin sheet of wool to prevent dust from getting in. I still have it on, and no problems so far except a few degrees of temperature increase.

  • IMac Reboots Are Needed More Frequently With Lion - Any Preventive Ideas?

My two-year old iMac was totally stable when running Snow Leopard. Since installing Lion I am noticing a new phenomenon. Various tasks I perform with Lion are now causing my computer to freeze from time to time, and requiring a reboot to get things working correctly again. It's turning out that I need to reboot about once a day to keep everything running right, while I used to be able to just put my computer to sleep each day, for weeks at a time, with no need to restart. Is anyone else noticing this? Any ideas?

How much RAM is installed? How much free space do you have on your hard drive? Have you tried reinstalling Lion:
    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Did a little too much maintenence - now I can't boot from my system drive

I figured I'd watch the Bears game this afternoon and do a little maintenence on my G4/733, currently runnint 10.4.9.
I booted from an older (10.3.9) system disk I have in the computer, Verified the disk (all was well, no repairs needed), then booted from my Disk Warrior (Tiger) disk and rebuilt the directory. Booted from the newly verified and rebuilt disk and it started up fine. Then ran Onyx and emptied several caches, including the system cache and kernel cache. Ooops, no longer boots...instead, I get the grey Apple screen, and then it just sits. When this happened the first time, I reset the PRAM by pressing the restart button six times...still no boot action.
The drive mounts fine, and so I'm in the process of copying the entire volume over to an external drive before performing any more maintenence. I can't do an archive and install from my supplied OS disc, as it's a lower OS version than I'm currently running. I'm loathe to do an erase and install, as then I get to perform the always-painful "make the computer work like it used to" process. And, the maintenence steps I've taken on this drive are nothing I haven't done recently on my other two Macs (both now running 10.4.10), both of which are running fine. So I'm still classifying this glitch as "minor".
Any suggestions out there? I'm gonna try to repair the disk again, and then run the OS 10.4.10 upgrade, unless I hear different from anyone here. Idears?

I had a similar problem. A mac started doing wierd things like not starting. All the tests showed no problem except one..I ran TechTool and did a full surface scan. It showed some bad blocks. The only way to repair was to clone to a back-up----erase and zero out the whole drive---then restore from the back-up.
That cured it....even a disk utility did not see the error.
Bad blocks can happen anytime, it may be no big deal but if this is your problem check it every so often and if more start showing up....start shopping..
    Cheers,
    Glynn

  • Common cracking in the macbook where lid closes : prevention methods?

Many of you with the white or black macbooks may have experienced a cracking on the edge of the palm rest. This happens due to the magnets on the lid i believe... I was wondering if anyone knew any prevention methods to keep this from happening. I already had to get the top case replaced once. If you know what I am talking about, I was wondering if anyone had any input on any prevention methods to stop such a thing from occurring. I was thinking putting a sticker there might prevent cracking.
also I have a hairline crack where the side of the macbook meets the palm rest. (think the plastic where the glowing light/ir thing is on the right... except my crack is on the left. Apple won't replace this... could there be anything that could stop the spread of the crack? (I was thinking super glue...)
    thanks,

    Hi torsenstarrow,
From what I've seen, the cracking is a result of excessive force applied when closing the lid. I think the reason why some MacBooks crack (and other don't) is a combination of the user and the strength of the plastic in the top case. I think, quite frankly, it's just a design issue.
I use to observe people close their MacBook lid, when I worked at the Genius Bar, and some people would gently close it until it made contact with top case. Others would get it to the point where it would fall on it's own and let it slam. Then there were always the people who "slam" the lid closed. Suffice to say, the third category of operators were always the frequent visitors to the bar.
I'm not saying the cracking is user-fault, but I do believe it's combination of user and design. Unfortunately, where one starts and the other ends is where it's impossible to point fault.

  • Real Instruments recording out of Sync

    Hi all,
I'm having an issue while recording an acoustic guitar through the built in mic. When I record a second guitar track over the first and play it back, there's a lag on the second track. This would happen to me while using Cubase too, I just don't know how to fix it on my new Mac
I know I could just move the second track to sync it up, but if there's any preventative, or automatic measures I can take, that would be better.
    Thanks

The lag is called "Latency", an unfortunate fact in Digital recording, however there are things you can do to minimize the problem.
Start by opening GB's help and search for "optimize"

  • S205 :Sad with Lenovo Driver support for Win 8

Sorry for my bad english, but I need to tell you my frustrating experience.
Due to low cost new windows 8 OS 64bit, I buy a lincense for mine Lenovo S205, conforted with some new Driver updated for 8 on Lenovo site.
I saw something strange in the Driver's page for ex. the wireless driver is called Cybertan\LiteOn and we have a Ralink RT 3090 wifi module.(or in some market Atheros AR9285)... Hummm realy strange.
I cross my fingers, I pray god and I start downloadin ALL the driver and start upgrading my system.
At restart I have my new Win8 64bit system and thank of god the most important driver (Ralink wifi) was autodetected and recognized by Win8  whitout install the strange Cybertan\LiteOn from Lenovo that doubt was working in a ralink device.
But at this point strarts the big issues with the unrecognized devices, that tahnks of god were less than expected but drivers fron Lenovo site were all wrong !!!!! Yes wrong, it seems a joke but was the true,
I think,(to tell the true I'm sure) no one from Lenovo tech checked the drivers in a S205 models, and I can explain why with the above sad experience:
    - SOUND: windows only install generic HD drivers and the sound quality as expected was crappy. So I try the lenovo driver Conexant but it does not properly work, SmatAudio icon in the ControlPannel was not present, no conexant pannel to manage sound, and nothing changed, windows continue with is own generym Microsoft HD drivers. I remeber that Lenovo model U300S and U300E have the same soundcard I dowload their Conexant Win8 driver (with a different number so I hope it was teh latest) and my idea was great, the Conexant U300 driver works on my S205 lenovo and Win8 detect the conexant soundcard and SmartAudio is present and working. There is only a isse concerning SRS Sound that is present on my system but if I try to lounch nothing appens, so I think is not correctly working. But so far so god sound is better than before with generic MS drivers, but to do so I have to choose a different driver from a different Lenovo pc, not an easy step for a normal user.
    - OSD: on screen display (FN+F keys) in 7 they was insert in the Lenovo Energy Mnagement, so to works you need to instal it. I make the same in win 8 with the new Lenovo Energy Management provides by Lenovo site, Lenovo Energy Management is working but OSD no !!!!
Windows 8 detect and show you in autonomy soud level and brightnes when you press FN+Arrow keys ant that are the most important but ALL the FN+F Keys are not showed on screen even if probably they are working (for ex. Fn+F6 correctly enabel1disable touchpad) but not icon showen on screen !! Well I can leave without OSD but once again seems Lenovo don't try EnergyManagement on a Win8 pc.
    - CARD READER: Windows detect and unknow device called USB CRW and I though correctly was the card reader, in fact I try a sd and win8 was not able to read it. So I install the Realtek CardReader downloaded from Lenovo site, It was extracted and installed but I don't know why the driver seems bugged, the pattern contains only some icon but not exe ord driver, in fact the Card reader even if I try the driver more times it was not decetced. I tryed the old Windows 7 driver for my S205 and thank of god it was working and now my cardreader is detected and working. Once angain the win8 driver provided by Lenovo fails and I need the oldest win 7 driver that maks the job.
    - TOUCHPAD: Synaptics touchpad was detected by windows 8 but all the basic features as the scrolling or 2 fingers was not working. So I try the Synaptics drivers provided by Lenovo and it was only for 32bit system even if is clearly showed as 32 and 64bit driver. The driver itself promp me that is not working on a 64bit system and i need to contact the producer :-(
Hahahaha very hilarious so I have to download the driver from Synaptics server that is so slow that I need 2 hours to finaly have my touchpad driver. Once again an epic fail from lenovo site.
CONCLUSION: Lenovo is the new n.1 pc producer in the world but it seems realy not professional when check his drivers and public it on the website. Could be s205 is the cheapest and not business line notebook but ... I am realy sad whit the way Lenovo put new drivers without any preventive control in the homesite driver's page.
It seems it was a lottery, extracting a number and put the corresponding driver on the S205 drivers page :-(
Sir this is not the good behaviour, is the bast way to loose users !!!! Very disappointed, very sad and I hope this post can help S205 users taht want use the new Windows 8 system to catch the correct solutions
I hope too some Lenovo developers can read this, try win8 on a s205 notebook and solve all the problems, because even if I solve with my 20 years pc experience all the issue, still remais some problems as SRS Sound seems not working (if It can work on our system, but if it can't why put in on our s205 driver too) and no OSD for every FN keys working.
There are not present some utility for win 8 as for example the CAPSLOCK keys utility that was present for 7 but not for 8 (I have to try if the older work on 8) or the Lenovo OneKey that seems not ready for 8..
So far so good winodws 8 works great on S205 and is a good choice if you catch the correct drivers as I explain here.
Hoping this help Lenovo not making the same mistakes in the future, and learn from their errors.
Once angain sorry for my language mistake but I'm not English
Hore this post can help in some case
    Bye

    Hi Romagnolo1973!
Thank you for posting all the things you learned, and how you got your S205 working with Windows 8! Hopefully this will help others.
To be fair to Lenovo, they list Windows 8 as not supported on the S205.
    http://download.lenovo.com/express/WIN8-INDEX.html
As you found, it is sometimes possible to work around the problems and get things working to your satisfaction!
    I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

How to delete a SET name in EAM- Preventive Maintenence. To avoid duplications the SET names needs to be deleted. Pls help
    Thanks
    Dinesh

    Hi,
Please try this and use BSEG as an example.
    1. Go to SE12.
    2. Enter BSEG
    3. Click Display button
    4. Go to Delivery and Maintenance' tab.
    5. You should be able to see Pool/cluster RFBLG.
    6. Double click RFBLG and then click Where-Used list button (CTRLSHIFTF3).
    7. Select Table option and click Execute button.
    8. System will show all the table that belong to this pool/cluster.
For Pool/Cluster REGUC, it is only used in table REGUP.
    Look at the below link

  • Mapping failure in Null fields passing

    Hi
We are facing some problem in null fields passing to RFC side.. some times the JDBC colums not having the data ,
so that time our map is failing to call RFC.
Please let me know any prevent methodologies for this?
Target side field occurances are 0...1
    Regards
    rambarki

    Hi Rambarki,
since your target field is optional, you can map your target only if the value is present in the source, do not map if it is null.
Also are you getting any specific error ?
Have a look at this thread aswell..
JDBC Adapter: Mapping: result contains only null values

  • You need to shut down your system.....

    Greetings,
I am unsure if the dump below is due to issues with the O/S (10.4) or hardware. I have been using Disk Warrior once per month for preventative maintenence. Can someone shed some light please? This is happening perhaps once per week. Thank you!

Your going to have to strip your box down to one boot drive, one keyboard/mouse and a video card/monitor. Leave the RAM in.
See if the KP's keep continuing, if so then backup your files, C boot from the installer disk (make sure it's pristine) and select Disk Utility Erase w/Zero and then reinstall Tiger and update. That should take care of the OS and bad sectors being the problem
See if KP's still continue, if so then it's time to strip the RAM down to the two inner slots. Go on and test out your RAM by inserting two sticks in, running for awhile, two more, etc. etc. Run Memtest.
Depending on that you'll have to start investigating the spare internal drive and exterior devices.
Keep working your way up and keep a record of all your steps because you have a lot of potential of hardware conflicts.
It could simply be the fresh OS install took care of it. It could be because you have so many devices and installed drivers they could be competing for power and OS resources/software conflicts.
Make sure your machine has a clean and steady source of power, sometimes UPS are glitchy, try a dedicated line from your circuit breaker.
Good luck, you got a lot of work cut our for yourself.

  • Outlook 2007 recurring appointments cannot modify and send update; getting "The Attachment Size Exceeds the Allowable Limit" Error

    Hi Expert
    I am using Exchange 2007 SP3 with Rollup 11 and outlook 2007 SP3 with Windows 7
Our users is facing this error, i can see on the bottom of the appointment, it has attachment with the same appointment attached.
I googling some information, when a user modify an existing recurring appointment, it will auto attach the orginial appointment in the modified appointment, is it true?
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/2a5d2475-3c23-4326-a9cf-5f15a64147a8/when-one-occurrence-of-a-recurring-meeting-is-modified-the-update-wont-send-due-to-error-the?forum=outlook
i can use MFCMAIP to remove those attachment, but i cannot find any preventive solution for user daily operation for modifiy the recurring appointment
Could you guy help me on this and i would like to know, is it a behaviour of outlook 2007.
    Thanks

Has anyone found a fix for this?  I have exactly the same problem and it's driving the users mental.  If I use Windows XP and Office 2007 as the same user it's absolutely fine so guess it might be a Windows 7 setting.  We are going to be
rolling out more Windows 7 PCs and hope this doesn't start doing it to everyone.

  • Cannot update payment info. This happened more than 6 times already.

  • Side effects in SAP BW after support package upload

    Hello!
I would like to ask whether do You know any side effects executed by installing of a support package (18 and 19)  in SAP BW 3.5.  If so, should any preventive steps be taken before, to avoid those errors.
    Many thanks
    RW

    Thank You for Your answer.
What I was looking for were all the activities, that are necessary before uploading of a new support package to avoid possible system errors afterwords. As I read on the forum, there are some errors following the SP upgrade like:
    - user can not use some program variants any more
    - customer exits show error messages, because some tables from the base are changed
    - descriptions of new activities in IMG customizing are missing
    etc.
Well it seems, that the only thing the user can do is to upload SP patches in the correct order and with an exeption of the last one released.

  • Will this idea work for recovering a hard drive? Please assist.

My parents Mac stopped working this week. Specifically their hard drive seems to be down. (Flashing ? on startup). They have a beige PowerMac G3 300MHz with an 8GB HD. The HD is formatted into two partitions. They run OS 9.2.2. They have done little if any preventative maintenance in the last 2 years.
What I have done so far:
    1) Booted from OS 9.2.2 CD
    2) Partition 1 (with the System Folder) does not mount. The
computer said it did not recognize the disk and asked if
I wanted to initialize it. I declined.
    3) Partition 2 (no System Folder) does mount. Files are
    visible.
    4) Ran Disk Utility on Partition 1. Disk Utility found
problems but was unable to correct them. Restarted and
    ejected 9.2.2 CD.
    5) Attempted to boot DiskWarrior 2.1.1 CD. Did not work -
perhaps the old machine has difficulty with burned
disks. It has been known to happen.
My Diagnosis: Since Partition 2 mounts, but Partition 1 does not, I guess that the directory on Partition 1 is corrupt, preventing the computer from finding the System Folder.
    Prescription: rebuild the directory.
Problem: how to rebuild the directory if DiskWarrior CD doesn't boot?
My Proposal: I have a slot loading iMac 500 G3(summer 2001, I believe). I also have a iMac 800 G4. My plan is to remove the ailing Hard Drive from their machine, and put it into the iMac 500 G3. I will then start the iMac 500 in Target Disk mode, and connect it to the iMac 800 via FireWire. I will then use DiskWarrior 4 on the iMac 800 to rebuild the directory of the drive in the iMac 500. Does this sound like a plausible plan? Please comment if you see any holes in my plot (ie - will DW 4 even work on a drive with only 9.2.2 and has never seen 10.x on it at all, or will it just mess it up more?). If you have any helpful suggestions or easier ways to do this, please let me know! Thanks.

I have one of the beige beauties, a 300 also. By today's standards they are a little slow in OSX, but in Os9 they really cook! One of the real beauties of these beige wonders is that they are so flexible. You can actually run two ATA/IDE drives on the same buss in a Slave/Master configuration and there is plenty of room, cabeling, and power connectors already installed for the job. If you have a spare 50 pin SCSI drive hanging around you can stuff that in also.
My suggestion would be to leave the iMacs out of the repair loop, get a spare drive (they are dirt-cheap on eBay), put OS9 on the spare, or even the 2nd partition of your present drive (you are still within the boot partition requirements of the 8GB drive in the 2nd partition), and do the repairs on the beige using its own drives.
The suggestion of getting a firewire enclosure is a good one. They really come in handy. Get a good enclosure, ie-pay some money for it. The cheap ones tend to loose their power supplies. The drawback is that the beige won't boot from it like it will from an internal IDE.
Unless there is information on the boot partition of the 8GB drive that they positively have to access, I'd abandon that drive and start over. It's just too much fussing and time spent otherwise, and Disk Warrior occasionally comes up short.

  • Missing features or lack of understanding?

    Gang,
I need to eliminate spam and I would appreciate email notification.
Does this service provide captcha or any preventative measures for spam and does it offer email notification?
I have looked and don't see either
    Rob

    Rob,
FormsCentral now supports email notifications. You or anyone the form file is shared with has the option to receive an email notification whenever a respondent fills out and submits a form. Optionally the email notification can include a summary of the response data.
The feature is available to Basic and Plus users. The notification option can be found on the “Distribute” tab.
Please try it out and give us your feedback.
    Thanks,
    Randy
