Any problems running a 24inch iMac from an external hard drive.

Six weeks ago I cloned my almost full 250GB internal hard drive onto a 1TB external hard drive and started to run the system from the external drive.About a week ago the sytem started freezing up and the bootup/login times got longer. Two days ago at bootup the display just showed a purpleish glow with no desktop etc.I have tried reseting PRAM, SMC and reseating the memory all to no avail.Having searched on the internet the conclusion is either the display has gone faulty or the graphics card/chip is faulty(both not desirable). Is this mearly a coincidence or is it the result of running the system from an external drive which has 'possibly' caused overheating os some other fault ?????????
This system is a 2006/7 24-inch Intel iMac.

The difference between safe mode and normal is that in safe mode only the minimum number of kernel extensions are loaded. Since the display works properly in safe mode that strongly suggests that you have one or more corrupt kernel extensions. I would recommend one of two things. First if you have not already done so, reinstall the operating system - you can reinstall a new operating system right on top of the current. If that doesn't work or if you'd rather skip that step, the second thing would be a clean install. Of course to do this you would have to erase the entire hard drive so if you don't have a current backup you want to do that first.
However, since your original problems began after some crashing and freezing with the Extertal hard drive you might want to consider using a different drive if you choose the clean install route I suspect that your display problems go back to one of the early crashes which may have been caused by a hard drive issue. When the computer has issues but passes the extended hardware diagnostics I tend to suspect the hard drive. When the hard drive is an external drive my suspicion becomes even stronger. The weakest link of an external drive tends to be the electronics of the enclosure but since most external enclosures are in capable of passing on the SMART status of the drive mechanism itself it's hard to know which is the problem.

  • Can you boot / run an Intel iMac from an external hard drive? Built-in drive is dead.

Hello, Have a six? year old, 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac that has a dead internal HD. The drive has 16,000 hours on it (per SMART Utility) and no longer shows up on desktop. Disk Utility, Disk Warrior and SMART say it's toast. I'm backed up to Flash drives and Time Machine but need a month before I can get a new computer... Don't want to run this one off TM back-up. Question is, can I add an external drive, use TM to make it my start up drive until then... Thanks, dp

Yes you can, you're going to install OSX on it (from the Snow Leopard disk) but it will work.

  • Is it possible to run an operating system from an external hard drive?

Really weird question here, but I've always wanted to know this. I have a MBP 13" mid-2012 and I installed a 256GB SSD. I currently have OSX 10.9 and Windows 8.1 installed on the drive, but is it possible to actually run an operating system from an external hard drive. I don't want to install anymore operating systems onto the internal SSD because I don't want to run out of space. So, I'm wondering can I install Linux on an external hard drive, the same way I would on an internal hard drive and just plug it in via USB 3 or Thunderbolt? Is it actually possible to use a computer this way? I know I can boot from a usb stick, so is it possible to actually use a computer with an operating system installed in an external hard drive?

windows don't support being installed on usb mass storage installs like usb

  • Any suggestions for running an iTunes library from an external hard drive on two computers?

I have two Mac computers: an iMac and a MacBook Air.  My iMac has 1TB of storage space (plenty enough for my 200+gigs of music) but my MacBook Air only has 250gigs of storage space.  I know I can access all of the music from my iMac on my MBA with HomeSharing.  But that doesn't work when I take my MBA out of the house for work.  I was going to switch over my iTunes library to an external HD but I don't know if I can access the library on the hard drive from my MBA, when the main library is on my iMac.
Any suggestions as to how to get two different computers to access an iTunes library from an external hard drive?
    Thanks.

I am confused as to what you had or have where and when.  The bottom line is, your library (for the standard user) is everything in the iTunes folder.  As far as iTunes' organization and display is concerned, your library is a file called "iTunes Library.itl" which points to all the other host of files and folders normally in the iTunes folder which all work together.

If you kept everything together in one place then you need to put the whole iTunes folder on the drive where you want it, start iTunes while holding down the option key and guide it to that .itl file.  If things were split up and you had media on the external and the rest of the library on the internal you need to get them back to exactly where they were before.  If you can't find that iTunes folder holding the critical .itl file anywhere then you have a bunch of media tracks and no organization and will need to rebuild the organization from ground level.

  • Can i run i tunes/iphoto from an external hard drive?

does any one know if i can run ituens/iphoto from an external hard drive and if so how do i do it?

Drag the libraries to it, launch each application with the Option key held down, and point them there. The iPhoto library needs to be stored on a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended.

  • Is it possible to run my iTunes library from an external hard drive?

As of right now my iTunes library is rapidly out growing my mac's capacity i have 120GB hard drive and am now down to about 20GB of storage due to my ever so growing iTunes library. Is it possible to transfer my entire library and run it off an external hard drive so i can free up space on my mac?

    Hi Tnarduzzi,
I just bought a new imac (after having my old G4 Mirror door finally give out), and I am looking to access my music folder from an external HD to this new computer.
I have already set my preferences in the iTunes advanced tab to select the external drive and folder as my "itunes library" but nothing in my music folder appeared when I did that.
I've done as you listed below (to choose library) but when I chose the library, it said "An itunes library file could not be found in folder..."
The folder I am trying to access is an iTunes Library I once had on my internal hd, but moved to an external drive.
What seems to work is going to Edit and then clicking "add to library." Is this another correct way to access my music from the external drive, while keeping all changes (ie addition and changes to library) off the internal drive?
Are updates, addition, etc really going to the external, or am I working with two different libraries (external and internal) but I don't know it?
Looking forward to hearing from you or anyone who can shed light for me.
    Thanks!

  • Can I run my iTunes library from an external hard drive?

My iTunes library is too big and I need to set it up to operate from an external drive.
How can I copy it to an external and run it out of the existing MAC?

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

Mac's cannot run a version of OS X earlier than what was shipped with the machine. For example if your iMac shipped with 10.6.4 it cannot run 10.6.3 or earlier on either an internal or external drive.

Why will Photoshop CS4 not open after loading to new iMac from an external hard drive and I get this message: Licensing for this product has stopped working:error code: 150:30

A Photoshop installation is tied to the machine it was installed on. Moving it to or from a hard drive breaks the licensing.
The answer is easy: Reinstall CS4 from your disc. and apply all updates.

  • Importing Time Machine backup  from an external hard drive

    Hi...to all
Last week i bought a Macbook. I pluged in my external hard drive Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus and it did a time machine backup on the Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus. The folder that was generated by the time machine on my external hard drive has the name backups.backupdb.
Then, i decided to return the Macbook and bought a Macbook Pro.
When I pluged the same external hard drive, Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus, although I am able to access and open individual files and folders, I am not able to copy neither any nor all the folders/files from my external hard drive to my new Macbook Pro. Moreover, I am able to access/open the files located in my external hard drive but when try to copy specific files from this drive to my Macbook Pro I get the following error message: Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error ocurred (Error code -50). Now, here is where it gets interesting: after 2 failed attempts to copy any single file from my external hard drive to my Macbook Pro desktop and receiving the above error message I am then able to copy the specific file (singular). This would mean that to copy the files and folders in the external hard drive i would need to do it on a one by one basis? If so, it would take forever...
Can someone please kindly help out.
    Thanks on advance

Are you referring to the files in Time Machine's backup directory on your hard drive? If so, and if what you are trying to do is to recover those from the backup to your working volume on the Macbook Pro (which is not what your title says you want to do but seems to be implied by the body of the question) then you need to have the computer name of the Macbook Pro the same as the computer name of the original Macbook (I think that step is required), then on the Macbook Pro choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks" from the Time Machine menu in Dock. This will allow you to recover files or folder in the usual way.
Alternatively, if you wanted to transfer all your user data in one go, you could fire up Migration Assistant and choose the Time Machine backup as the source to transfer the user data from (again I think the computer names have to be the same but I'm not totally sure).

  • Can an intel iMac run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive?

Hi can anyone please tell me if it is possible to run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive on an Intel iMac running OSX 10.5 Leopard or later?
Or is it possible to partition the intel iMac's hard drive and add Tiger?
At the moment I am running Tiger on a partitioned hard drive shared with OSX Leopard and wish to upgrade to an intel Mac. I need tiger to run some software not compatible with newer Macs and also to access OS9 Classic. Thanx for your help.

IF you upgraded from Panther as you know you do not have an Intel based iMac. I beleive the limit of your upgrades on your current machine is going to be Leopard. The system requirements for Snow Leopard are:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply
This is straight from Apple so yes if you want to go beyond Leopard then you must purchase a new machine. My suggestion would be to begin replacing your legacy apps, you are extremely far behind and the longer you wait the more painful it will be to get current.
    Good luck.

  • Problems copying files from an external hard drive to MacBook (error code 36)

A little while ago I backed up some files on my iMac to an external hard drive (formatted in the Mac format). These were primarily office documents (PDF files, Microsoft Office) and some photos. The documents had orignally been copied to my iMac from a PC (via USB), whilst the photos were imported directly to the iMac. Having brought a MacBook Pro recently, I've been attempting to copy the data over. Unfortunately, I keep getting error code 36 when it attempts to copy the files over. I've tried skipping some of the files it gets stuck on, but it keeps finding more. This also happens when I am just trying to copy over a folder of photos. Another unusual thing that I noticed is that when I try to copy a folder containing just under 300 files, when it attempts to copy it says it is trying to write 1,500+ files... which I don't quite understand.
I've run the disk utility tool to check the hard drive, but it says it's fine. Prior to copying the data over to the external hard drive in the first place, it had been freshly formatted. Unfortunately, since this was the backup disk, I kinda need to save these files!
Does anyone know of any solutions out there that could help?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • Running itunes from an external hard drive

    Hi there,
My itunes library is getting a little too large for my iMac to handle (nearing 500gb of my 1TB hard drive, leaving little space for all my other software and documents) and I'd like to move the itunes library and run it from an external hard drive.
I've read the following link and am clear on the procedure...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Sure, I can go through the process and see what happens, however, I thought I'd ask to see if anyone else has done something similar and am curious as to whether they encountered any issues / have any words of wisdom to impart?!
I have an Apple TV which syncs with my iTunes, as well as an iPad and an iPhone.  The iPad and iPhone sync when connected, but the Apple TV syncs over WiFi...
Will I have any side affects by moving my library to an external hard drive?
I plan to purchase a drive with FireWire 800.  That said, I do have a 2TB TimeCapsule, but I cant seem to find any decent information on how to use it as an external hard drive...(even though, I believe, it says you can do so in the 'sales bumf' on the Apple store)
    Your thoughts/advice/comments wold be appreciated!
    Cheers,

  • Need to move (consolidate) my iTunes files (media/library) from my external hard drive (i use time capsule as an ext hd)  back to my main iMac where my iTunes is located.

I used my time capsule (1st gen) as an external hard drive to store my iTunes files and my iTunes app is on my main iMac.  Now, I've decided to move those iTunes files from my external hard drive (TC) back to my iMac where my iTunes app is located.  What is the best way to do this?

Is the Time Capsule the right piece of kit for the job?
    Not really, no.
TC is a dumb as board hard disk in an airport extreme router. It has no media servers.. no backup.. it is slow and designed for TM target for laptops. The major one here is lack of backup. Any files you put on the TC can and will be lost at some point.. and to backup you need to have a computer connected to it with an external hard disk.. and a 3rd party backup because TM is too dumb to back up network drives.
TC is designed to spin up slow and spin down quickly at the end of backup. You will have issues when you stream media from it.
ATV needs to connect to itunes server.. not the library. You will still need a computer running. Same for lots of things.. since apple designed their system to be dependent on itunes.
The best idea is a media computer.. a mac mini is ideal. Don't need the latest greatest.. but an actual mac running itunes. Unfortunately it doesn't have large internal drives.. so it is still a bit kludgy in needing a fast external drive.. but at least you have automatic backups.

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?
