Any reason NOT to reinstall OS X?

I just got my PB back from repair. I guess when they put in the new harddrive they just "registered" it as ( ...a's PowerBook... )
I went to change that to (.. Spencer's Powerbook...) but now it seems that some things recognize "Spencer's" and some recognize "a's" and I can't connect to the internet.
I was just thinking of wiping the drive and reinstalling the OS and all applications, but I was wondering if there's any reason I shouldn't. (I have all files backed up on external HD)
Also, I'm trying to determine if one of my RAM chips is bad,(took it out yesterday),.. so if I reinstall OS without the this RAM will I still be able to put it back in and have it be recognized?... man, I hope that makes sence.

Yes format after you backed up all improtant info with or without the extra ram chip.
If you need to put the RAM back later put it in and restart + PRAM reset (commandalt+pr) until you hear the chimes once or longer as you feel like.
Then once in OSX select "About this Mac" on the bkue Apple top left corner and see if it show up as installed.
You must also make sure to get rid of static + power/bat is totally disconected from PBOOK before touching the RAM.
Place ram in slots and make sure they are propperly inserted when removing one and later when adding the 2nd one.
I think there is here on Apple website a pdf that describes how-to do the ram replace I have seen it here somewhere under support ???
If you have to replace the chip make sure it is same brand and specs even down to timing thingy but likely it should still be under warranty from the Manufacturer. Even so micro fractures does occur and can only be seen with a microscope.
Best of luck.

  • Any reason not to trash old updating software?

My utilities folder contains ipod updating software going back to 2003. Is there any reason not to send the old versions to the trash? It takes up a fair amount of space.
    Thanks.

You may want to keep the very last version of the stand-alone iPod Updater app. There may be some rare case where the update/restore feature integrated into iTunes does not work properly, and you want to try it with the old updater. Note: Although iTunes gets regular updates, the iPod software version for the old iPods (installed by iTunes for update/restore) remains the same.
Of course, if you no longer have the iPod(s) from that time, it would serve no purpose. iPods that were release after that point would not work with the old updater.

  • Any reason NOT to update from iOS 4.3.5 to 5.1?  I'm scared.

I have an iPhone 4, and I am running iOS 4.3.5.
I am reluctant to update because everything is working fine.
    Any reasons to update?
    Any reasons NOT to update?
I see a couple of APPS that I have that will no longer work unless I update.  But that's not a big deal at this point.
I notice that some of the graphical interface has a different look (such as  the toggle switches).
    Thanks!

A few reasons I think iOS 4 is better than 5:
    * Resource management (iOS 5 takes up more space on your phone)
    * Loss of iPod icon, now split into Videos and Music
    * If you have a Bose Sound-dock, some report it no longer works
    * Battery is very hit or miss. No major degregation on my iPhone, but I have noticed it.
If you are on the brink, use TinyUmbrella and make SHSH blobs of your iOS version. Then you can swap (downgrade) iOS versions. Note that it isn't supported by Apple and you'll need help elsewhere to do this.
(I am a fan of exploits, so the average user need not worry about the above)
I updated to iOS 5 because of Reminders, Weather, and iMessage. Probably the best reasons to update.

  • Any reason not to set up Hotmail account on ipod touch?

I have just purchased a new iPod Touch. My main mail account is with Apple Mail, and I have a mobileme account. I also have a free Hotmail account? Is there any reason not to set up this Hotmail account on my touch, along with my Mail account - glitches, conflicts, etc. I can live without it if necessary. If no problems, can you point me to a step-by-step instruction guide to set up the Hotmail account? Thanks!

You can use the web ... using Safari - go to www.hotmail.com - this should bring up a mobile version of the login page. Log in to Hotmail to see your mail. If you don't logout of Hotmail, but simply hit the touch Home button you will be able to recheck you mail just by launching Safari and selecting the pages icon (bottom right) and then selecting the Hotmail page. You will see a Refresh option (or you can touch the clockwise pointing arrow in the URL line).

  • Any reason not to buy a Gen4 now?

    Hi all,
I'm in the market for a new iPad.  Aside from foregoing the upgrades, any reason NOT to try to find a good deal on a Gen4?  They are starting to trickle out there.
    Thanks!

We have ipad 2's 64 gb from the Apple refurb store for over well over a year and they have been great. We bought them at $499. and from the time the quickly discontinued ipad 3 came out, the price has not changed.
So it's sort of a guessing game.
If you're looking for a good deal, you might want to look in the Apple Certified Refurbished store.
A new ipad 4 16 gb is $499. - was $419. in refurb store and as of the announcement for the Air it is now $379.
A new ipad 4 32 gb is $599. - was $499. in refurb store and is now $449.
    etc.
    Those are pretty good deals.
Each comes with a brand new front and back cover, a brand new battery, packaged as a new one with cable in the box, and has a full one year warranty. Please note they come and go in the refurb store. There usually are more 16 gb and 64 gb in the store, so when you are sure and have shopped around, buy it quickly after you make your decision.
    Hope this helps.

  • Any reason not to...

Just purchased 2 new 4 GB memory sticks. Any reason not to reformat them. They are most likely going to be FAT 32 drives.?

You can certainly do as the others said and just use them. That doesn't answer the question, though.
Whether you reformat depends on how you want to use it. If you want it to ever be used on a PC, you'll want to leave it as-is (or reformat as FAT32 if it's something else). If you only want to use it on a Mac, and don't want to deal with some of the annoyances of a FAT32 volume, then you can certainly reformat it as Mac OS Extended.

I have the iPhone 3gs.  Any reason NOT to update to iOS6?  I've heard there were glitches.

The iOS 6 is great, but really is there some issues with some people. This is your choice, but i would suggest to update only when the new version of the iOS 6 (probably the 6.0.1) comes out.

  • Any reason NOT to create subfolders under user folder?

I'm switching over from a 5+ year old MacBook Pro to a new one. I do a lot of audio recording and production work. On my old machine, which was my first Mac, I created a subfolder 'Recordings' under my user folder (let's say it's named "bob"). I don't remember why I did that. Probably I was thinking well, this stuff isn't documents.
On the new machine, running Yosemite, I discovered that Apple in it's wisdom had made my "bob" user folder hidden, which meant I had to go figure out how to show it because there are some audio plugin settings files I needed to add manually from the old machine into my user/ Library area. Did that.
BUT... I'm wondering if there is some reason why Apple changed the user folder to hidden (other than "you dumb users don't need to know about this stuff"), and specifically, if I should avoid creating any subfolders under my user folder? I would really rather not have my 'Recordings' folder  inside the Documents folder, but I guess I can if there's some good reason not to create subfolders under 'bob'.
    Thanks in advance.

They didn't make it hidden (like the Library sub folder), but I believe it is no longer included in the sidebar by default. Probably for the reason you state. As you've found, you can add it back through Finder Preferences menu.

  • Rverese proxy sugguestions - any reason not to use ISA2006 anymore?

This is a silly question, but im just looking to publish meeting content outside the organization to external users, is there any reason for me not to use the old reverse proxy i was using for OCS2007 R2 which is ISA2006 ? i know its out of support and
all of that but fundamentally it should do what i want it to do should it not? or are there any gaping security holes in the product i could drive a truck through?

I believe ISA2006 will work for simply publishing Lync Web Services. (there wasn't too much of a change in how the publishing works from ISA 2006 to TMG that I can recall.)
I am not aware of any giant security holes in the product, mainstream support did end in 2012 and I haven't seen any updates beyond 2009.
A couple other alternatives if you don't have an appliance you can use (i.e Kemp/Citrix/F5 Loadbalancer) are:
    IIS ARR http://blogs.technet.com/b/nexthop/archive/2013/02/19/using-iis-arr-as-a-reverse-proxy-for-lync-server-2013.aspx
    Windows 2012 R2 WAP http://blogs.technet.com/b/dodeitte/archive/2013/10/29/how-to-publish-lync-server-2013-web-services-with-windows-server-2012-r2-web-application-proxy.aspx
In fact: Microsoft actual suggest that you can use ISA here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398069.aspx "You
can use Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2006 SP1, or Internet Information Server 7.0, 7.5 or 8.0 with Application Request Routing (IIS ARR) as a reverse proxy."

  • Any Reason NOT to Upgrade?

I immediately upgraded my mini to Leopard the moment Leopard was released, and am enjoying it. But my primary computer is my 17" 2.16 Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro. I chose NOT to upgrade it to Leopard immediately: I needed it to be "stable" and I give Keynote presentations weekly, and just didn't want to upset my routine. Also, some of my favorite utilities weren't immediately Leopard-capable...
I just upgraded the 100GB drive to a 200GB drive, and I can "feel" a performance improvement...boot-up time is reduced, and things just feel quicker.
ANYWAY - Is there any reason for me now NOT to upgrade to create a complete bootable backup and ARCHIVE & INSTALL Leopard onto my MBP?
    Thanks for your advice.
    Clint Bradford
    Riverside, CA

Put the old drive into an external Firewire enclosure. Install Leopard on it. Update Leopard to 10.5.2 and update your third-party software. Run your MBP from the external drive for a week or so doing your typical stuff. If you have any problems it's simple enough to boot from your old system on the internal drive. If all works out OK then you can safely upgrade your old system or clone the external one to the internal drive.
This is precisely how I do all my system upgrades. Saves a lot of time and headaches.

  • Any reason not to put Lync Edge server on the same server that runs Web Application Proxy?

We're currently running Lync 2010 standard server, without an edge server or reverse proxy.  I'm working on migrating to lync 2013 standard server, and would like to add the edge functionality in the process.  I have a Server 2012R2 in the dmz,
with the web application proxy role installed.  I plan to use that to publish the lync web services.  Is there any reason I shouldn't install the lync edge server on the same computer?

It just won't work well as everything will want to bind to port 443 (the reverse proxy and the edge services as well).  On top of all that, it's just not supported.  A new virtual server will save you hours upon hours of frustration and leave you
    with a supported configuration.

  • Any reason not to use microSD to SD adapter in tapeless camera?

I've been looking at getting a bunch of SD cards for my tapeless cameras, and the microSD seems to be cheaper (even with the adapter) and has better reviews than the regular SD cards.

Any reason to stick with just the regular SD cards and not use the microSD with an adapter?
    Thanks.

I have issues investing a shoot  to an SD card..and you  want to shoot to a micro Sd card!
You are a brave man so good luck.
    (and.get Production Insurance).
FWIW - Any shoot I do to an SD card is "insured" by simultaneously  recording to a Samurai (SSD) as well as Production insurance.

    Adam,
Why not just say, "SpinPoint OEM SATA 500GB"? makes it a lot easier.
OEM versions often work fine as long as they are not using with 3rd party PCI RAID controllers is the only thing I see.
As for price, WD 500GB retail is a few dollars more.

  • Any reason NOT to use google addsense?

sounds straight ahead. Any cons of using addsense?
    Thanks
    Craig

The only reason I can think of is: If you care about a graphically perfect appearance of the website then don't add Ads. Not because they look bad or they have any influence on how a website appears. But imagine the painting of Monalisa by Leonardo DaVinci with Ad added on... Say an advertising for Pasta displaying on the right top of the painting... It's not unesthetic but it wouldn't be the same painting anymore and wouldn't be visited at the Louvre by hundreds of thousands of people (ok... maybe it would...)
I hope you got what I meant to say

  • Any reason NOT to take 3GS to iOS 4.02 ?

    Greetings to all,
    I have a 3GS w/OS 3.1.3, AT&T (US)
I see many reports of people not-satisfied with iOS4.x, but then, I see many reports from people who are just fine with it. And of course, the only people complaining are the ones with problems... if most people are just fine with this, I haven't seen much discussion.
If it influences the opinion, my plan is to get an iPhone 4 at some point, and I will be selling my 3GS -- does the presence of iOS 4.x hurt my resale value? Do the people buying the 3GS (32gb) for use in other countries or networks typically care what OS is installed?
Can anyone name some compelling reasons why I should NOT upgrade my 3GS from 3.1.3 to 4.02 ?
    Thanks,
    J

    Hi,
I agree with roaminggnome that there are lots of people who have no problems with the 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 updates.
But a quick search through this forum will show complaints from people who are experiencing several issues since update.
Since I updated my iPhone 3GS from ios 3.1.3. to ios 4.0.2. I have:
    lost WiFi (option greyed out)
    lost bluetooth
frequently getting No Service and dropping calls.
Once you update, you cannot go back to 3.1.3.
It's your choice, there are arguments to support upgrading and not.
    Hope that helps.
