Any reason to prefer DVD+R over DVD-R or vice versa?

Hi,
I have always bought DVD-R media, because older Macs didn't support +R. Now that I can use either, are there any reasons to use +R instead?
TIA!

William,
+R is suppose to be a better more reliable format but the question is really compatibility. Most modern equipment will read +R but some of the older DVD players would not. If you're creating DVDs for your grandmother, chances are she has one of the older ones.

  • Any way to share photos, movies between iMovie, iPhoto, and vice versa?

The question above speaks for itself. Any answers?

By sharing a movie to iPhoto, I mean that if you made a movie in iMovie, could you open it and watch it with iPhoto? Yikes! I meant to say Photo Booth! So sorry, not iPhoto, but Photo Booth. Is it possible to make a movie or take a picture in Photo Booth and then watch and save it in iMovie, and edit it from there? Is it also possible to make a movie in iMovie and watch it in iPhoto (this question is less important than the one before)? One last thing; can you take a picture in iMovie?

  • Any reason to scan PXI-2575 and SCXI-1127 in a particular order?

    Hello-
Is there any reason to prefer one scan-list order over any other? specifically is it better to scan through ch0, ch1, ch2, etc rather than randomly?
It doesnt seem like it would matter.. but many DAQ devices behave strangely if you scan them in ascending order (eg 0, 1, 2) and thus I always scan them in descending (e.g. 7, 6, 5, ...)
    thanks-
    brad

    Brad,
Simply based on the switch modules, there should be no difference in which scan list is prefferable.
Can you elaborate on the strange behavior you have seen on some DAQ
devices?  The only interesting behavior I can recall that may be
fixed by scan order is when certain channels are saturated and "ghost" onto other channels.  If this is the case, follow the steps in the linked KnowledgeBase to remedy the problem.
What data acquisition device are you using along with your switch modules?  What types of signals are you measuring?
    Have a great day!

  • Dvd skipping over damaged area

    Hi,
This is in reference to a MacBook Pro DVD issue:
    13-inch, Early 2011
    Processor: 2.3Ghz Intel Core i5
    Memory 4GB 1333Mhz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Software: OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
After inserting the Prometheus DVD disk I get the message right away: "Skipping over Damaged area"
When I put the same disk on another PC or DVD player the DVD plays without issues. I also tried other DVDs on this MBP and they play without issues. Is there any known issue or fix for this problem?
    Thank you,

  • Haven't burned a DVD in over a year

    Hey everyone --
Sadly, I haven't been able to burn a DVD in over a year. It actually might be two years ... I was always skeptical that anyone would ever write me back in these posts, but I thought I might as well give it a shot today.
Every time I try to burn a DVD using DVD SP3, I get the following error... does anyone know what it is? Any help would be greatly appreciated... I can watch DVDs fine and even burn CDs, oddly enough.
The recording device reported the media error: L-EC uncorrectable error. (0x11, 0x05.)

Wow that was fast! Thanks for the heads up already... ! =)
I've tried a couple different discs (HP, TDK, Memorex, and a generic brand from work) ... and I keep getting different errors. The most recent one is...
The recording device reported the error #8: No additional sense information. (0x00, 0x00.)
I found a forum with a similar issue; but I'm not sure how to "optomize" my hard drive or bufferunderrun in DVDSP3. Interestingly, I can burn data/audio CDs, but no data DVDs. =(
The model drive I am using is the standard pioneer, superdrive ... here are the specs on my computer...
    Machine Model: Power Mac G4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
    Memory: 1.12 GB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.3.3f2
I recently tried cleaning the DVD writer lens as well, to no avail.
The problem is you hard drive is not keeping up with the speed of the write on the DVD drive. You can try a couple of things to fix it. Optimize your hard disk and make sure it is not severly fragmented. Second make sure your DVD drive has a buffer and if there is a bufferunderrun that you can check on then you need to check it. Third and final is burn at a slower speed and you should not encounter the problem.
Basically the whole sense code error is saying that as it is trying to write the data to the DVD it is not reading the information quick enough to keep up so it produces this error.

My Mac has suddenly stopped playing my DVDs including a DVD it played fine only 3 days ago. I insert the DVD and wait for the player to start automatically but after 10 minutes, nothing is happening and it sounds like the disk has stopped spinning. I've now tried with four different DVDs (all store bought and so perfectly normal disks). The Mac doesn't eject the disk or anything it just doesn't seem to respond to it being there at all.
My main confusion is why this suddenly happened today when it was perfectly fine last week.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and how I could fix it? Thank you.

  • Is there any way to EXTRACT subtitles from a DVD?

Is there any way to EXTRACT subtitles from a DVD? My ultimate goal is to convert an existing DVD into a flash file for web use. It has subtitles which I want to retain. I have tried pulling the DVD files (.VOB) and encoding them to .wmv.
I was thinking perhaps I could import the DVD into Premiere, Encore, etc. I am able to pull the DVD video files off but the subtitles track/file is NOWHERE to be found.
    Any ideas?

You cannot do this with Adobe tools. The subtitles are a separate image stream inside the vob.
As with any third party or Adobe tools, I assume you are using them for legal purposes.
Try the following link for a description of a process used. I have not used this tool. It is one of many, but I thought the description was useful.
    http://www.booki.cc/avidemux/extract-dvd-subtitles/
The easier way to do this is to get the subtitle file from the creator. However, many DVDs are created using a script image file, the person authoring the disk may not have a text file of the subtitles, and I don't think you can use an image subtitle file for flash subtitles.

  • Any difference between (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) and  (DVD+R DL/DVDRW/CD-RW)?

Hi, I live in Italy but going to USA soon and thought to buy a Mac mini there since exchange is so good now, but I have a doubt. I saw that in the specs of the DVD burner there is a difference in the designation between the European specification whih reads "SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVDRW/CD-RW)" and the American specification which reads "SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)". What does this mean? Would I have any problems with the one bought in America when using it in Europe?
Would be grateful for some info.

The specifications of a Mac mini purchased in Italy are the same as those of the same model Mac mini purchased in the United States. If you look at the Italian specifications page, DVD±RW is listed there.

  • Any way to move old prefs etc. back over after clean install?

So I have a few partitions and a few options here. I'm currently running 10.5.1 off of my internal HD and it seems fast and stable so far. I have another partition with my Tiger system cloned and yet another partition I could use. So I could do another Leopard install onto the Tiger partition, do an archive and install, so that I get back all my prefs and bookmarks etc., not have to reinstall certain apps. But can I manually copy prefs, mail etc. over from my Tiger partition or is that a mistake?

Looks like maybe Migration Assistant may be what I need. Will it copy over my mail, bookmarks and prefs from my Tiger partition? What essentially would be the difference between having done an archive and install over my Tiger system and doing a clean install and using Migration Assistant to move stuff over? Will it essentially give me the same results?

  • Brand new DVD "skips over damaged area"

Hello there....So I shot hdv, edited in native hdv 1080i60, used compressor to make a best quality 150 min ac3 and m2v, and used dvdsp to format, and disk utility to burn the image. But right when it finishes burning, and I play it in DVD Player, around 30 min in, it skips and freezes. The image plays fine but the dvd doesn't. The dvds are sony dvd+r. Bad dvds? All my software is up to date and i'm using a hv30 and lacie 7200 external firewire 400 drive.

Could be a bad disc. Try another set of quality media and see if it works. Also bitrates are important too. what were your settings?

  • I burned an edited movie to disc using H.264 codec and a second movie to MPEG -4 Video both worked well on my iMac but will not play on my Sony DVD Recorder/Player which accepts both DVD RW and DVD-RW.  Any suggestions?

I burned an edited movie to disc using H.264 codec and a second movie using MPEG-4 Video.  Both played well on my iMac but would not play on my Sony DVD Recorder/Player which accepts both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs.  I have tried other 'codecs' DV-PAL; DVCPRO-PAL; DVCPRO50-PAL; AIC; and finally share to iDVD.  iDVD works on both my iMac and DVD Recorder but the picture is very poor with major shimmering which is unwatchable.  Can anyone assist? The other codecs I used either do not pay on my video recorder or fail when I play them back on my iMac.  I am at a loss as to what I can do.  I am from the UK so using PAL is essential.

If the source video is interlaced, you may have problems using iMovie. It de-interlaces everything on output which can cause picture to look strange.  Final Cut Pro X supports interlaced video, but it costs a lot more.
Standard DVD Players don't support H.264 or MPEG4.  You might want to look at this article on transferring HD video to DVD.  I wrote this article mainly for Final Cut Pro, but many of the same principles apply.

  • IDVD problem burning and multiplexing - gets stuck but ejects the DVD and the DVD doesn't play

I am having trouble burning DVDs.  Everything seems to be working fine during the iDVD project creation.  I can watch the movie and select scenes within iDVD.  Then, when I go to burn the DVD, it gets stuck at the burning/multiplexing stage - the wheel just keeps spinning and says there is about a minute left.  Yet it ejects the DVD and the DVD won't play when inserted into a DVD player.  It will show the intro and the scene selection pages but when you click on one of the scenes, it gets stuck and doesn't play.  I have already uninstalled and reinstalled iDVD.  The problem persists.  It seems like the burner itself is the problem.  What can I do to fix it?  I have Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 with a 2.8 GHzintel Core 2 Duo and iDVD version 7.0.4.

    Hi
Multiplexing error is a very complex problem due to many things (long long list following) - one common but not obvious reason is that material on the iDVD menu goes outside the TV-Safe area (or just touching it).
So first - turn on TV-Safe area and move any object well inside of this.
Wide screen stretched - usually (as I think) it is due to making a 4x3 movie in a 16x9 wide-screen project OR the other way around. This forces one to on flat-screen TV (or other) set the presenting view right - My has 4x3, wide-screen, zoom and auto-wide-screen and I have to switch this by my remote for some DVD I've made "wrong" way.
Now my long long list on Multiplex Error

Audio - .aiff (as on audio-CDs) (else converted to this .aiff 48KHz)

    Chapters !
    A.    Using strange letters in video project name e.g. +,/; etc. keep to a-z and 0-9 strange letters in project name e.g. +
as described by Donnyboy69.  Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.
    B.    Location of Chapters
    • Can’t be at start or end of movie (Skip first/start one - iDVD sets this by it self. At the End - no need)
    • Not in a transition (or within 2-3 seconds from it)

    Multiplex Error
    Chuck, Chicago 2/7/2009.
Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.
    One user more writes
To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
    The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
    This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.
    Russ One - suggest this
Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
    Summary - What to try
    1. Chapters
    • Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
    • No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
    • No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
    2. TV-safe area for buttons (no one outside this)
    3. Safe re-boot
    4. No other external devices connected - that are not needed
    SDMacuser adds to this
    • On #4 ... No ext. devices. Some think this applies mainly to ext. FW. Not the case. Also applies to ext. USB2 as well (not to mention flash drives too).
Do not leave 3rd party devices / camera / camcorder plugged in unless it is being used with iDvd's One Step process. Certain web cams can trigger this also (especially ones with added features like LED light/s that draw additional power from the FW or USB bus).
    5. Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up hard disk
    6. Make a DiskImage first - reduces where problem originates
    7. Trash iDVD pref. file
    8. Make a new iDVD project
    9. Movies in project with same aspect ratio e.g. 4x3 or 16x9
    10. No other programs/applications running during iDVD process. e.g. Internet, screen & energy savers
