Any recomendations for PCI slot configuration

Setting up a new Mac Pro, venturing into HDV. For the 4 PCI slots I have 2 GeForce cards, a Kona LHe, and the last slot will get the SCSI card for a RAID array.
When I put in the Kona Card I got a PCI configuration app on boot. It gave me several choices for configuring the slots at varous speeds, (16x, 8x, 4x, 1x).
The slots are not set independently. For example, The appropriate configuration per AJA support was the choice that gave: 16x for Video Card 1, 8x for Video card 2, 4x for the Kona, and 1x for the currently empty, (soon to have the SCSI card) slot.
Note: Per AJA support, the Kona is operating at full speed at 4x, however the Mac reports (the slot?) is operating at below maximum speed. As it does for the GeForce operating at 8x.
So my question is (finally - thank you if you are still with me) I am anticipating seeing this utility again when the SCSI card is installed. Is there minimum speed selection I should be aware of to prevent dropped frames etc. I am assuming if I need to reduce one of the other slots to get a higher speed for the SCSI the video cards are likley candidates. I cant think of any issues I would have running them at 8x or even 4x.
Thanks,
John

On the new Mac Pro systems, I don't believe you can get a 16/8/4/1 setup.
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Conceptual/HWtechPCI/Articles/pciimplementation.html
Based on my experience with the Kona 3 and the PCIe Configurator, the best you can get is 16x, 8x, 1x, and 1x. The previous G5 systems did allow a 16/8/4/1, but not the newer models.
I currently ran into this issue setting up a Mac Pro with a Kona 3, X1900, and a SATA card. ATTO has some nice features, but it needed an 8x slot...which doesn't play with the Kona 3 and x1900. Not enough bandwidth left over.

  • Recomendations for Hard Drive Configurations

I bought a rather basic computer a couple months ago to learn Premier on because I did not have the cash for the NLE machine I really wanted with the expectation I would upgrade it as needed. I knew when I started the 250gb hard drive free space would diminish but I did not think it would happen so quickly. Stock footage and completed projects have depleted my 250gb hard drive free space to 17gb and the hard drive is overdue for an upgrade already.
Any suggestions for hard drive specs and set up configurations that will compliment production with CS3 would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Mike
Computer specs: XFX 680i LT SLI MB; Q6600; 2gb ram; Vista 32 bit.

Personally, I'd keep the 250GB with System & Programs. It is over-sized for that purpose, but I'm not one who enjoys uninstalling and re-installing either their OS, or their programs. If you've got it set up that way already, you do not have to do a mirror/image/Ghost and hope that you get everything over to the new drive. Chalk this up to my laziness. You can also use some of this space for seldom used Assets, like SFX, or music, that you want to keep handy, but will not be accessing that often. I do this on one storage HDD, and then copy over these Assets to the Project, as they are used, on the big, fast Media HDD, when needed.
Add 2 new HDDs, if you have the controller connections. You will be limited, with this choice, to what controller you have in your system. Right now, the 750GB units are selling at some low prices, as the 1TBs are really coming on line. Two 500GBs would be cheaper, still.
If you have an open PCI/PCIe slot, you could get a speed boost by adding a good SATA II controller card and going that route with the HDDs. The SATA's are running a bit more expensive, than ATA-100/ATA-300s, but you will get a little I/O boost.
There are several good threads already, on how best to use your new HDDs with PP. The ideas may vary a bit, but the folk responding are stating how they find it best to configure Scratch Disks, etc., for their particular workflow. I'd search these forums (do not exclude the PP2 forum in your search, even though you have CS3).
Last considerations will be the cooling of your case and the capability of your power supply. Within *practical* terms, you cannot run your system too cool, and can never have too beefy a PS. If you have minimal cooling, look for more efficient fans, or more fans. If your case is close to you, and you edit with the speakers, quiet cooling will be a benefit. Do check the output from your PS, to make sure it can handle additional HDDs, or you may have to upgrade that, as well. When I'm commissioning a new system, I go with the most powerful and coolest (I'm talking thermal here, not flashing LEDs) PS, that I can get. If I can get it up to about 2.5x my immediate needs, I know that I can add "stuff," and not have to worry. Overheating systems and inadequate PS's are a big reason for system crashes, especially while rendering.

  • A68HM-E33 wont boot if any card in PCI slot

Put together a system with an A68HM-E33 board. A4-5300, 4Gb Kingston HyperX, 120Gb Intel SSD, Win7 x64.  Got it all running fine. Went to install a PCI (not PCIe) wifi card. System will not post, gives 8 beeps, no BIOS splash screen.
Remove PCI wifi card, system boots normally. Tried a PCI ethernet card, same thing, won't boot.
Why would a card in the PCI slot stop the system from booting?

  • Recomendations for PCI Wireless board

    Hi,
I'm planning to add a wireless PCI card to 3 desktop computers at home. I run only Arch in all of them.
I'm mainly worried about by compatibility with Arch. What board would you recomend?
    Thanks

If it's Arch on 32bit you'll manage to get windows drivers work through ndiswrapper, if there's no support in the kernel. If 64bit I'll recommend you to stick with boards that have kernel support. I had successfuly installed pci boards (from trendnet) with ATH500x (54Mbps) chipset (kernel module ath5k). I also got working a board with Ralink chipset (300Mbps), through ndiswrapper, with the windows drivers that come on the board's cd. Configuring the connection is a little bit tougher, but with the help of network-manager I think you'll manage to do it quickly. There's a modified network-manager by the Pardus Linux team, as the result of an effort at the Google Summer of Code, that makes the life of configuring wired and wireless networks even easier. But i didn't see those pacthes integrated in another distro as of now.
Also, some other supported chipsets should be Intel ones (and they're known about their openness towards Linux driver development). But I don't have experience with those chips, so I'm not able to advise you about them.
    Happy Linux-ing!
Update: Sorry, the chipset on the 300Mbps board was mistakenly attributed to Atheros. It is a RALINK chipset. I updated my previous comment.

  • What cards can I put into G4/350 Sawtooth PCI slots?

    Hi,
I have a generic PC TV tuner card and some video and modem cards for PCI slots.
Can any of these cards be used in my Mac running either Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X 10.4?
Are there drivers for these PC cards in Mac OS X at all?
Just trying to fill these lots since I have these cards laying around...

Yeah, I know ... the key is getting the Mac OS X drivers...
I'd love to get that TV tuner PCI card to work in my G4. heheh, but I just know most/many PC PCI cards dont have Mac drivers... d'oh... I'll Google search for the specific Tuner card name, etc..
It seems a waste to leave those PCI slots empty. heh.

Well if your sure they are seated in the pci slot firmly then no i have no idea, for the board not to pick them up atall is certainly not a good sign.
Have you got any other pci cards you can try, an old modem, a network card, anything?
You could set the BIOS option of Plug and play OS to "no" and set the irq for the pci slots manualy instead of them being on auto, maybe that will get the board "thinking" about whats plugged into it, but i think thats a long shot to be honest!

  • How do I configure 128 channels of DIO and 128 channels of Analog output with the availability of 3 pci slots

I have only 3 slots of PCI or 4 slots of ISA bus, I want to configure with the minimum possible modules to attain 128 channels of DIO and 128 channels of analog output. This is inturn fed to the PCM (Pulse code Modulator). The cards will be placed in industrial PC.

    Associate Engineer-Marketing,
Using just those 3 PCI slots you're not going to be able to get the 128 analog output channels. You will probably want to go either the MXI-3 (PCI bus extender) to a PXI chassis or E Series DAQ card to a SCXI chassis for such a high channel count system. Which analog output cards and which digital I/O cards you will want depends on your application. You will have to decide whether you will need static or dynamic analog output as well as whether you need clocked digital I/O or not. I highly recommend contacting our internal sales department at 1-800-433-3488. They are great at helping specify systems.

  • X121e, other uses for WWAN mini PCIe slot?

Does anyone know whether the mini PCIe slot in the X121e that the optional WWAN card goes in can be used for other cards?
I'm aware of the whitelist, which had been suggested may only apply to wireless devices (e.g. WLAN and WWAN) - although I'm not sure whether that's certain (i.e. doesn't apply for non-wireless devices).
I've heard some people have tried mSATA devices in this slot with no success (which isn't suprising as whilst mini PCIe is physically compatible with mSATA it isn't electrically, and so you need mSATA support in the hardware).  However I've been wondering about mini PCIe SSD cards and whether they would work.  I've heard that they're not brilliant when compared to mSATA devices - however I can't afford to get a large SSD for this machine, and in general, people don't need to store all their MP3/videos on SSD, as the best benefit comes with the OS and applications being stored on the SSD, with user data being fine on an HDD.  My using a mini PCIe SSD, I could potentially put the OS etc onto a cheaper/smaller SSD, with the hard drive for 'data'.
Has anyone tried this, or any other non-wireless mini PCIe devices in the X121e?
    Thanks

Might be of interest to you that I tried a half mini pcie micro sd card reader in my X301.  It would allow 64gb if it worked.  However I got an error message on boot up - can't remember exactly what it was.  Other than that the only other option was the intel turbo memory which was of little benefit to me.

If you do not have SATA HD's in use and/or RAID set up then you can disable those controllers and put your sound card into PCI slot 3.
The other 2 options to put your card into are
    - slot 2 which is shared with your onboard NIC (disable NIC on Device Manager when you play 'heavy' games. You can also change the PCI latench for nic to 0 and increase PCI latency for sound card to 64 or 28 (link to DL PCI Latency tool can be found if you search this forum)
    - slot 4 which is shared with some 'unknown' controller/device/other action ?
For the IRQ 5 question; you find explanation for this if you searcg for terms StandardPC and ACPI.

  • Best slot for PCIE 3.0 x4 SSD in Z97 Mpower

    Hi,
I own the Z97 Mpower board and want to purchase one of the new Intel 750 SSDs with PCIE 3.0 x4 interface. The Z97 Mpower has three PCIE 3.0 x16 slots and can be configured as x16, x8/x8 or x8/x4/x4.
My system has a 780GTX card in the first x16 slot.
So, which slot would be the optimal slot to install the Intel 750 PCIE 3.0 x4 SSD?
I know when using multiple video cards in SLI the bandwidth changes, but if I put in the PCIE SSD will it force my video card to x8 bandwidth? or what configuration is the best choice?

    Don't use PCIe-4, use PCI-5 or PCIe-7
Yes, of course the PCIE-2, PCIE-5 and PCIE-7 are all the PCIE 3.0 slots, but my question is, when I install an Intel 750 SSD into slot 5 or 7, will that cause the PCIE-2 slot with my video card to run at x8 speed or does it only change the PCIE slots from x16/0/0 to 8/8/0 only if a video card is installed in SLI mode?
Does the PCIE slot bandwidth still adjust down to 8/8/0 even when installing a non-video card?

  • Which PCIe slot for gphx card?

    Hey all:
I have had a problem with my mac pro 2006 rebooting spontaneously. I thought it must be the graphics card and finally pulled the graphics card out and left the mac pro on for a while to see if it would reboot. It didn't. It was solid. No graphics card = no problems, so I assumed it was the graphics card.
So, I decided to swap out my x1900 with a 4870. It's rebooting. I guess this has to do with power to the logic board or something. I have no idea, but I'm super frustrated since this thing isn't under warranty.
I decided to put the graphics card (the new 4870) in the 2nd to bottom PCI slot, rather than the bottom slot. I got a message on startup from the PCI Expansion Slot Utility: http://twitpic.com/2k2jeh
So, things seem to be stable (but I am not counting on it). Is my 4870 not running at full speed in the second slot? I'm not an expert in how the PCI slots are set up, and I'm trying to understand.
    I decided to swap

    I found this : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2838
Slot two is 1x + 16x rather than "slot - one" which is just x16... so since slot two has that extra x1 I guess the 4870 cannot perform to its fullest, but pretty close?
I have a suspicion that something in the PCIe slot 1 chain may be broken?... like the power or something? I'm going to lower my fan speed down from 1800 RPM and see if it blows up. It probably will.
Anyone think I just need a new Power Supply, or maybe a new logic board?... how much do those things run? And if I call in on an unsupported system what sort of pricing is it for replacement parts like this? Bad?
