Any recommendations for a external hard drive for a mac pro 10.4.11?
I need to back up my computer before installing a new operating system and I have no clue how to do this. I'm not very computer savvy.

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.

Mac OS X 10.9.2 is 12 years newer than 9.2.x. You need to make sure that Spotlight has indexed the external hard drive by adding it and removing it from Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Spotlight -> Privacy. Check the menu for it:
to determine if indexing is still going on, as it will say indexing.

Can programs be installed on an external hard drive with my mac pro?
Can programs be installed on an external hard drive. I am running low on space. Final Cut Pro X spins off the rendering files which takes a large chunk of space. Like to at least have those rendered files on an external drive, but can find that option to make it happen.

Like you I am not prepared to lose all my currently functioning Mac, but also like to see how the new OS runs before making the total switch, maybe when it gets to 10.7.2
So after you download Lion and select to run the installer it will show you which disk to install on, being the default SL drive you downloaded Lion with. But here you can click Other Disk and select the external HD. The installer will run and then boot into the external drive to complete the installation. From then on you can use Startup Disk or the Option key to select the preferred OS. -

If you mean copying or moving files using the Finder, there is no problem at all.
But if you mean capturing or editing video while media files are stored on an external disk, than Firewire is the right choice, since USB doesn't guarantee sustained throughput (I use USB disks to backup video files, and FW disks to capture/edit video).
Since I guess you'll be using either iMovie or +Final Cut+, the format will be either DV Stream in .dv files for iMovie or .mov (with DV codecs for video and linear PCM for audio) for FCE/FCP. At the end of your editing process you can always convert to AVI or export to a DVD authoring application (e.g. iDVD) that will compress to MPEG2 before burning.

Justin R.To install the file, if you did not download the Install Mac OS X from the Mac App Store, you must make sure your Mac Pro is compatible, it must be at least a Mac Pro3,1 to install Mavericks. If you are compatible, and want to install on a USB drive, first you must open Disk Utilities (in Finder, Applications, Utitlities) and then select the exernal drive from the devices listed in the left panel of the Disk Utilities window. Then decide if you want one or more partitions on the drive and the size of the partitions. Select each partition one at a time and name the partition and then choose the format as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and the Partition Table as GUID, and then Apply to format the drive.
Once that is done you place the Mavericks Installer DMG file on the desktop, double click to open and then choose the drive for installation to be the external drive you have formatted and named.
The installer will install and then delete itself when finished. If you want to keep a copy, make a copy and store it in a safe place, such as your Documents folder.
To boot to the external hard drive, restart the Mac Pro and hold the Option key. That will result in a grey screen with images for each of the bootable drives. Highlight the arrow under the drive you want to boot and then click that arrow again. -
I have a Toshiba Canvio 1TB external hard drive on my Mac. I've used it for 4-5 months with no problems, but now cannot add to it (I use it mostly for photo storage) to it. I can still access information previously added. Ideas?
I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots. Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.

I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library. Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots. -

Thanks for the suggestion, Cattus, it is in fact a formatted disk with a lot of valuable data, so I do not want to reformat the disk.
I followed your advice, however the repair failed because of an "invalid B-tree node size".

Could someone recommend a good external hard drive?
Just purchased my 1st Mac/the new Mac mini. Arrived today & am very impressed.
Set-up, right out of the box, was incredibly SIMPLE and I cant believe what a little dynamo this thing is! I've thought about 'switching' to a Mac from PC for quite a while, but was always a little nervous, so I've patiently watched & waited from the sidelines- until now - and it was well worth the wait.
My 'question' is, can anyone recommend a good external hard drive I can use interchangeably between my PC & my new Mini? Still using the PC until I get completely acclimated with Mac platform/etc - I'd like something with at least
1TB storage. Thanks!LaCie and G-Technology offers superior hard drives (at a premium). They are pre-formatted for Macs out-of-the-box but you can format them to WIndows easily. They have FireWire ports (most of LaCie offerings and all of G-Technology) which is good on Macs and they also have USB 2 ports for Windows. Those drives are of good quality and will last a long time. G-Technology drives are mostly aluminium just like the material made for the Mac mini so it looks great together.

I have Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4, Quickbooks Pro 2010, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac, Operating in Windows 7. Quicbooks Pro 2010 is not responding or opening currently. Quickbooks does not support Parallels anymore. I hear Apple Bootcamp is an opton. Are there any recommendations for running Quickbooks Pro 2010 on Mac?
QuickBooks Pro 2010 for Mac is not supported in Lion. QB Pro 2011 will work, but I just got an email today that 2011 will not be updated to work in Mountain Lion. QB Pro 2012 will be updated for ML.
Be aware that the Mac version of QuickBooks is shamefully lacking in features compared to the Windows version. I do use the Mac version, but it has more features than I need for a small business, so it doesn't affect me. No one knows why Intuit seems to hate Mac users, but they show it every day.
If QB Pro 2012 for Mac can be downloaded as a demo, I would strongly suggest testing with it before making a final decision. You will be able to import the Windows data, but possibly not all of it, depending on the Windows version features you use.
Boot Camp allows you to install Windows on its own, bootable partition. When you boot to it, you are of course running Windows in every sense of the word. Just on Mac hardware rather than typical PC gear. Your Windows version of QB will work there without issue. The problem is having to boot back and forth between Windows and OS X, depending on what software it is you need to use at the time. -

You can buy just about any USB2.0 hard drive and use it with your MacBook Pro. Many older external drives come pre-partitioned and formatted FAT32 for use on Windows. Your Mac can use that file system as well, but it has limitations on file sizes. You can always re-partition your external drive and re-format it as HFS+ (MacOS Extended Journaled) then your old Mac OS version and your new one should both be able to access it just fine. One thing to keep in mind is that many older OSes don't really handle drives larger than 2TB well, so you would probably want to try to keep your external drive to something smaller than 2TB...

Drag and drop or copy and paste files just as you would do with any normal Finder operation.
The Time Capsule is located under the SHARED heading in the Finder.
Click on the Time Capsule icon and double click the folder that appears representing the drive....named Data....unless you have changed the name......to mount the drive on the desktop.
Drag/drop or copy/paste files to the icon on the desktop or to the open window there. -

What option has the faster GB/s?Disk drive using native SATA bus interface will allow the drive to copy and always present and ready.
But once you have backup any hourly changes should be smaller and as long as the NAS and your switch should allow enough.
You should always have off line backups and don't rely on just one backup set or just TimeMachine.

The easiest way would be to just attach the external drive to the MacBook Pro. iMovie should see it next time you open iMovie.
If you are going for portability, you can attach the external drive to the MacBook Pro. Then open iMovie.
Then click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK. You should see your external drive listed in the Project Library and the Event Library.
To make a COPY just drag the icon for your project to the icon for the external drive in the Project Library List.
To MOVE it, hold down the command key while you drag.
If you want to edit the project, you will also want any Events, Photos, or Music referenced in the Project. To get those, click on the Project to select it (it is now on the MacBook Pro) and click FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA. -

When I go to import the footage, and select where I want it to be saved, my external drive is not even listed. It shows up fine on desktop and in final cut pro 7. I also unchecked the box in FCPX preferences of "copy files to final cut pro folder". Any advice is appreciated.
Nevermind, I hooked up my other external that is formatted Mac OS Extended that is used for time machine and FCPX recognized it fine. I guess I will have to reformat the MS-DOS harddrive to Mac OS extended as well.
