Any resolution to 10.4.10, wireless router/encryption issues?

Like many others, I upgraded to 10.4.10 and soon began experiencing connecting to the Internet problems on my ATT/2WIRE gateway/router using WEP encryption as well as kernel panics.
Having had my MBP for only two months, I did not have many files so I did a Erase/Install using the disks (v. 10.4.8) that came with the laptop. Immediately after this procedure, I updated to 10.4.9, did permission repairs. The gateway/router issue and the kernel panics with 10.4.10 were gone. Without having installed anything else, I did the combo update to 10.4.10 again (did permission repair before and after) and after the double reboot, I was able to reach the Internet. I then went on to battery and sure enough the Internet connection was lost after about 10 minutes. Then came the kernel panic. I resorted to doing another Erase/Install and updating only to 10.4.9 and since then, no problems at all, even on battery.
I've read through the discussions on this but did not see if there was a resolution. Would 10.4.10 v1.1 resolve this issue? Or is this something that 2WIRE would need to update their firmware?

Wireless router password issues

Here's my problem. I have a wireless router and am connected on it right now. My problem is that I don't have a password on it. Every other day it seems like when I try to connect to the router from my laptop it's asking me for a password again. Everytime I have to reset the router and log in fine. Change the admin password on the router so no one else can get onto it and reset your WEP settings.
This happened to my brother whenhe was in college. He didin't want a WEP on his Wireless but his buddies kept messing with him, logging on and changing his settings.

I have the latest Apple TV. Why do I have to reset my wireless router almost all the time when I turn on Airplay. My wiress has been flawless for a year until i recenly hooked up apple TV. Cisco Linksys E4200. It seems to make my wirlels network go haywire. My IPAD sugnal goes in out at this time. This is never an issue. I checked the wirless on my phone, IPOD, and playstation, and all go in an out until I it the reset button on my wirelss router. Why this is a pain in the *** as it is up stairs.

Then this problem, does not sound related to changing your router at all. Have you checked that the power lead is properly pushed into the Apple TV and that you are selecting the correct channel for HDMI on the TV itself.
Check that the HDMI cable is correctly seated at both ends.
Try disconnecting the cable and connecting it again.
Try another HDMI cable.
Make sure your TV supports 720p (Apple TV 2)
Try the Apple TV with another TV

Wireless Router Encryption

Hi!
I recently switched to a Wireless-G Cable Gateway from Linksys (Model WCG 200), and can't seem to configure an encryption so that the houses near me aren't using my cable access. Does anyone know how to set that up with OS 10.3.9? (I have an older G4 if that's important).

Click on Safari and when it opens type 192.168.1.1 in the Browser window and hit the return this should open up the Link-sys Utility for the Router.
I suggest you get out the phamplet for your Router and it will give you a step by step for all of the settings for your Router including the Username and Password instructions.

Sharing is also turned on in the Windows printer control panel for this printer (under properties). The Mac is a G5 running 10.5.8. When I try to print a page from the Windows machine it gets hung in the print queue.
Any advice how to proceed would be appreciated!

I also recently upgraded my wireless router and the roouter is working fine with the five elements on the network. Prior to the upgrade to 7.0.3 and the router upgrade the airplay feature working fine and i was able to consistently use airplay to stream music th the AV receiver. After the upgrades the airplay icon no longer appears on my iphone or on my macbook running itunes. Any suggestion on how to trouble shoot the missing airplay icon is much appreciated.

You're running an old version of Safari. Before troubleshooting, try updating it to the latest version: 6.0. You can do this by clicking the Apple logo in the top left, then clicking Software update.
You can also update to the latest version of OS X, 10.8 Mountain Lion, from the Mac App Store for $19.99, which will automatically install Safari 6 as well, but this isn't essential, only reccomended.

I keep losing my wireless connection after periods of inactivity - any solution? I recently installed a new wireless router with improved range.

I recently installed a Netgear Wireless router for improved reception, but now my macbook loses connection through Airport after periods of inactivity. We have another older Macbook in the house, and it never loses connection. I never had this problem with the previous Linksys router, just limited range. Any ideas what is causing this? It's frustrating to have to frequently shout down and re-boot. That so far is the only way I can re-connect.

Adjust the Wireless Settings on your linksys router...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab on the Setup page- Here Wireless Network mode should be mixed- Provide any non linksys network name ....
Name (SSID) box- Set wireless channel to 11- And wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on "Save Settings" >>
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select AES...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your
network key whenever you connect to your wireless network.

HI...just purchased a new ipad 2 16gb wifi only... Was also sold a 3g wireless modem so that i could connect it to my already owned wireless internet dongle.. upon trying to set it up i can get the Ipad to find the wireless router but thats it. Trying to confine a wireless signal to your home is not a practical solution to security concerns. The distance that a wireless signal will travel is mainly limited by the receiving antena and sensitivity of the receiver. An ordinary wireless receiver can probably pick up your signal for 200 to 1000 feet. A great receiver could probably pick up your signal from a mile or more. The best alternatives are:
a) convert your system to a wired system, or,
b) encrypt your wireless using a good encryption method (WPA or preferably WPA2) and use a strong password.

I had rebooted the router (several times, actually), to no avail.
I do not know the answer to whether MAC filtering is enabled on the router. Have tried to find info about that, but unsuccessfully. Router is an Arris TG852G, supplied by Comcast. I would be surprised if MAC filtering were the issue, since in addition to the computer, we have successfully connected several other devices to the wifi, namely an iPad, a Android phone and a Kindle Fire - all able to access internet pages through the wifi, and all without a need to add the device to a MAC address whitelist. To add to the mystery, the Comcast tech was able to connect his iPhone 4 to my network and access web pages. He was unable to connect my iPhone, however, after trying for some time.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that an iPhone cannot connect to a wireless "n" router, only "b" or "g". The Arris router is described as a n/g/b compliant router, and as noted the Comcast tech was able to connect his iPhone, so don't know why that would be the issue here.
By the way, my iPhone does connect wirelessly to my network at home. This difficulty is at a second home.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

OK - so now I see how the ethernet connection would sit in the iMAC and the airport extreme card in the powerbook - but I am totally confused by the multitude of wireless modem/router contraptions available (I can feel my credit card about to explode in anticipation...)
I've narrowed my choice to either the d Link, netgear or Linksys brands as these seem compatible with both the airport express and my old PC laptop and network card.
Can anyone add wise words? I've researched the combined modem/router because adsl modems in the uk are usb only...(see I'm learning something!)

It matters not of which wireless router you choose, as they all comply to the IEEE 802.11 format. (In your case, 802.11g)
Be forewarned that using a third-party router programme may be a bit tricky to setup, as third-party routers will need to be set up via web browser.
Linksys I found to be the best in overall functionality, however, it's setup method is quite tricky.
Should you choose to go Airport Extreme over all other brands, you might have to pay a little more, but you will get more features and far more functionality, plus, setup with the included Apple Airport Utility will be much easier and more user-friendly.
Guaranteed that the Airport cards will be compatible with any 802.11g wireless router that you choose.
"Combined" equipment, however, I feel can cause problems in the future, should one part of the equipment cease to function, it would be of a greater cost to replace or repair, so don't go that route.
Also, should you choose third party, you will need to setup the router directly via ethernet anyway.

Any danger from wireless router radio signals?

A friend of mine has some concern that the transmissions/radiation from a wireless router in the home could be harmful to his 5-year old son.
Two questions:
1. Is there any merit to his fear?
2. If he installs a router but uses only the wired ethernet connections (and makes no use whatever of the wireless capability), will that eliminate all wireless radio transmissions from the router?

Hi wildsky! In a way, yes there is some truth to his fear. Any electronic device ( it's not true to routers only) can create its own EMF ( Electromagnetic Field). When exposed to it for a long period, it can become harmful to one's health.
If he has wired devices only and doesn't really need the wireless function of the router, he can disable that feature. He just need to access the setup page of the router to do that. It would depend on the model number of the device though as some wireless routers do not have that option.
