Any Routine Maintenance?

I'm wondering if there is any type of routine maintenance I need to perform on my MacBook similar to that of a PC. I remember when owning a PC, I had to do disk compression, etc.
Also, when I want to uninstall a program in the applications folder, is it as simple as clicking the program icon and deleting it? Is there any other type of uninstall process I need to go through?
I'm trying to make sure that I have all of the free space available on my computer.
Thank you for all of your help!

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

  • Performing a "clean install" of 10.6 as routine maintenance?

Does anyone regularly wipe out their entire Mac OS 10.6.8 and perform a "clean rinstall" as part of a routine maintenance regimine? I was always told an OS reinstall was overkill, unless you were having issues that could not be resolved through traditional trouble-shooting methods, and that it wasn't something that was necessary to do on a regular basis. Considering how much time it takes to reinstall the OS and upgrade all the apps to the latest versions, is there any new reason I'm not aware of as to why someone would need to do this for 10.6.8 on a regular basis in a work environment if they aren't experiencing any issues? Thanks for any opinions.

Are you using the original gray-faced OS X DVDs that came with the system (if so, what OS X level does it say on the disk) or a retail copy of OS X 10.6 or another gray-faced OS X disk from another system? You can't use a gray-faced OS X disk from, for example, an iMac or MacBook Pro, to install on your MacBook.
Was it originally delivered with an OS X level that is greater than what you're trying to install? You can't install an earlier level than what came with the system.
Did you boot to the DVD, and use Disk Utility to create one disk partition, then reboot and try to install?

  • Routine maintenance for imac

I have been using my imac for over a year now and have never installed an antivirus program. Does an apple computer need antivirus software? If so, which kind?
Also, do I need to do routine maintenance for my imac such as:
    .spyware search
    .defragment the hard drive
    .and of course the antivirus
    .scan disc
Or, what else do I need? My computer is running fine, but may be a little slower browsing.
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

    Hi Doxy,
Christopher is right: Yes, you can install some antivirus and spyware watch software, but it's not (yet) necessary on a Mac.
Just make sure Firewall is on, in System Preferences > Sharing,
and of course never open an application that you're not sure of, this kind of email common sense behaviour...
    Maintenance:
Pretty much almost everything is automatic in Mac OS X.
    All you really need is:
    - Backup!
    - Keep at least 15% free space on your hard drive.
    That's it.
    You can also:
    - Run the "Daily", the "Weekly" and the "Monthly" tasks (using OnyX or such utility), all three together once a month is fine.
    - Repair permissions (Disk Utility from the Utilities folder) after using an Apple installer or Software Update.
Before an important update or twice a year:
    - Repair Disk (Disk Utility from the Tiger DVD).
    Slower browsing:
    Try deleting this folder
    Home/Library/Safari/Icons
and emptying Cache (menu Safari > Empty Cache)
or equivalent if you use another browser.
This will slow a few pages down for only a few minutes, and make it start fresh with no old, usused stuff that you keep since the beginning.

  • Automatic routine maintenance

Does OS X 10.8 make an automatic routine maintenance ( at night ) ?
If so , what it does ?
If I configure the Hard Drive to sleep when available , Does it "wakes up" ?
Is the routine maintenance available on Sleep mode ?  or do I need to leave my iMac ON ?
    Thanks

If you examine the Console logs you may see that your iMac wakes up from time to time, but I believe that only happens if you set "Wake for network access" in System Preferences > Energy Saver. It may perform any required maintenance tasks at those times.
The Mac performs daily, weekly, and monthly routine housekeeping tasks, among which is to archive old logs and cache files. Any overdue tasks are accomplished when the system wakes from sleep or starts from a cold boot.
A long time ago - several versions of OS X, way back to Tiger at least - these tasks were scheduled to occur at fixed times during the night. If your Mac was asleep or off during those times, the tasks would not be completed and the log files would grow large. This gave rise to a number of "cleanup" utilities that were intended to substitute for tasks the Mac did not do when it was supposed to them. Such utilities have been unnecessary for years, yet the myth of having to maintain your Mac persists to this day.
The Console app is in your Utilities folder, and is the place to examine the extensive logs on everything the Mac does.
If you are not opposed to the idea, you can permit Apple to collect these logs for diagnostic purposes:
These log files do not occupy much space but the system deletes them when they're a few weeks old - it is also aware of impending disk space constraints and will accelerate deletion if necessary.

  • Maintenance history for Routine Maintenance Orders

Hi I want to know where the work order history to be entered for the Functional Location for future reference and analysis for a routine maintenance order. Normally for routine maintenance we dont raise notification and directly order is created from the maintenance plan/item. Please reply.

Depends on how you plan to use that history. If you need to do data analysis of this history then may be you should use the notification by creating it. If it is just to record info then I feel that entering the explanation in the long text during time confirmation or in the order header etc.. should be good. I feel the first option is good. Try it. If u find it too cumbersome then shift over to the second. Right now I can only think of these two.
    thanks

  • OS Patching and other routine maintenance window

Apologize for length, just trying to get an idea of how other clients handle routine downtime such as DB patching, OS patching, Tidal Patching etc. as well as Disaster Recovery planning.
Currently we are on a Window master in 5.3 but are currently in the middle of an upgrade to 6.1 moving to Linux masters.  We use the Fault Master which means that unless there is a definite requirement to bring the entire environment down, we always have a tidal master running in PRD even during Win Patching which occurs once every 4 weeks Sun from 3 - 5 am.  Most of our majors systems that use Tidal are also down during that timeframe.
One of the masters has a patching win of 3 - 4am and the other has a 4 - 5am.  I believe FM patches on another week.  Because we have a Tidal 5.3 bug that is sensitive to network performance, patching both masters on the same day ensures that after the patching window is complete that we  always end up with a live master that is on the same data center as the DB cluster (which sort of mitigates our exposure to the bug) .
With 6.1 and the bug supposeded fixed, the new patching schedule has both masters being patched on different weeks.
    These are my questions:
    - Dees any one see any pros and cons with patching each master on a different week?
    - Even with the low number of transactions, should we be setting the queue = 0 prior to the patching and failover?  We haven't done this on Windows and no one's complained.
    - In 6.1 , if the live master happens to be the backup master, what happens when the FM goes down for patching?  Can the FM only go down when primary master is the live master?  We have our fault tolerance set to auto ( either masters can take over as live ).
    - In windows, we have the master services set to auto - is there a reason not to do the same for Linux after the server bounces?  (GIven that in 6.1 there is an order to bringing things up FM, master then CM).  I have seen times when master came down and CM was up - is that not acceptable?  Should CM always be bounced after the master bounces?
On a more advanced topic with DR -
Are any other client on a clustered DB (like Oracle RAC)?  Are you able keep Tidal running somehow during DB cluster patching or is the hard rule always to bring TIDAL down?  I am aware at least on 5.3 that Tidal losing connection to the DB is NOT pretty.  Lots of stuck jobs and other data integrity issues.  The question arises because DB team is looking to take advantage of some Oracle features to see if we can patch DB without having to bring down Tidal entirely.  Can perhaps failing over and forcing that new master to a specific DB cluster that will be available be an option?
With CM on load balancers, do people use a 'TES under downtime maintained please log in again at 6:00 am' type http redirect so that the users get something more informative whenTIdal is down.  What do you use for the load balancer to detect Tidal is down?  Access to a file in the webserver?  An actual signon attempt?  Are you able to force a redirect anytime even when CMs are up just so no on else can log in other than admins (whihc is a nice feature especially right after a system issue)?  How to folks handle system availabily after a major system issue - do you limit access to TES until some system sanity tests and test jobs ave been run?  If so, how do you do it?
Lastly, does anyone have a backup fault monitor installed on another data center for DR purposes?  Have you been able to make it work?  I am assuming  bringing stand-by FM means having to reconfigure all the masters to point to this.  DO you have scripts for doing this or more manual?  Can't remember if this is all on config files or actually SQL updates will need to be made behind the scenes.  We currently do do this in 5.3 but noticed in our 6.1 architecture that this component is a single point of failure if we lose a data center.

Meant to say we currently don't have a backup fault monitor in 5.3 but wanted to explore it with 6.1

  • Suggestions for routine maintenance?

My daugter is heading off to college with a new 15" MBP. Any suggestions for simple, regular maintenace she could do?

To be honest, Macs don't need much maintenance. There are scripts scheduled to run in the middle of the night which don't run if the machine is off. Some people like to run these manually using a utility like macjanitor.
Personally I prefer anacron - it runs the scripts automatically if missed.
    http://members.cox.net/18james/anacron-tiger.html
    SO download and install that.
Other than that, run software update regularly.
And...when updating software, run repair disk permissions, from the disk utility in applications/utilities - I keep it on the dock.
Can't think of anything else worth doing as regular maintenance.
    Best of luck.

I was thinking the vaccum process or similar was supposed to be run and cachecleanupinterval set ?
what/how do i set this up and do it?

Well, the datasync server should be running it's own maintenance
routine that should keep it in tune.
There are however these TIDs :
'Support | Performance Issues on DataSync - No Performance of
    Maintenance' (http://www.novell.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7009723)
'Support | How to run manual maintenance on Datasync and Mobility
    databases' (http://www.novell.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7009453)
'Support | How to automatically clean up old devices from Mobility'
There is also a good article on PostgreSQL maintenance in general,
where vacuum/reindex is held against a full dump and reload. You can
read that bit here : 'How to optimize PostgreSQL database size |
    LinuxInsight'
I've not gotten around to testing/doing the dump and reload routine,
but it is something I'm planning to do where databases grow beyond what
I'm expecting with depending on the amount of users the server is
    servicing.

  • Routine maintenance? Hard drive space management

As a new Mac user, what do I need to do to maintain my computer besides run the automatic updates?
    1) Do I have to defrag the drive regularly like in Windows?
    2) What if I move all my MP3s (250MBish) to another computer? Do I need to defrag like windows?
    3) what can I do to get the most out of my 250GB hard drive?
    Thanks, regards, Slurpie

    1) Do I have to defrag the drive regularly like in
    Windows?
No. All files 20MB or less in size are defragged automatically. Some users that do heavy duty processing on very large files (video editing, Photoshop, etc) report slight performance increases by defragging, but most don't bother and don't notice any problem.
    2) What if I move all my MP3s (250MBish) to another
computer? Do I need to defrag like windows?
No, unless your files are bigger than 20MB they will be automatically defragged.
    3) what can I do to get the most out of my 250GB hard
    drive?
    Four things:
    1) Backup.
    2) Backup.
    3) Backup.
    4) Periodically run Disk Utility, or even better, get Disk Warrior and run that. The sooner it catches errors and can repair them, the better chance you can avoid problems.

  • Routine maintenance?

Every 2 months we run server cleanup on our servers which consist of the following and I'm concerned with running all of these on our Ex2013 sp1/Win2012 server.
    Check Antivirus
    Run Defrag
    Check Disk Space
    Run Windows Updates
    Run Disk Cleanup
Run CCleaner (cleans history, cookies, download history, Recycle Bin, Recent Documents, Temporary files and Log files...)
Reason for my concern is: I had a MS support call at one time and they said to
    refrain from running
check disk on C:\ because the exchange install path, exchange database files, exchange log files reside on it.
What would you recommend for server cleanup on an Ex2013 sp1 server?
    PennyM

    Hi Penny,
General maintenance includes tasks such as disk and file maintenance, updating operating systems and applications, and protecting data by using antivirus software and performing regular backups.
For servers running Microsoft Exchange Server, there are also Exchange maintenance tasks that occur regularly, such as database defragmentation and index purging. We can check
Enable background database maintenance (24 x 7 ESE scanning)
in Mailbox Database Properties > Maintenance tab from EAC to enable online database scanning, which runs continuously in the background.
If you select this check box, Exchange scans the database no more than one time per day and will issue a warning event if it can't finish scanning the database in a seven-day period.
To enable Online database scanning, we can also enter the following cmdlet in the shell:
    Set-MailboxDatabase -Identity MDB13 -BackgroundDatabaseMaintenance $true

  • Routine Maintenance Period?

Since no system can run forever without some form of maintenance, I know that iTunes' servers must occasionally need maintenance. Here at Augusta State University, we do some types of systems late on a Friday afternoon and some systems are handled by an "early morning" period - before the users of those systems are typically in. *If you need to do maintenance on the iTunes U servers, when are you most likely to do that?*

    Interesting straw poll question.
The way I look at it, the hard truth about being a server admin is that it's not a "first thing in the morning"/"Friday afternoon" kind of thing. Not that a morally censure you, mind ... I -wish- it were like that.
Generally, I'll aim for a "least annoying" time ... if on a weekday, it'll be late (9 PM local or later) .. if on a weekend, certainly before 9 AM or after 5 PM. But the wee hours are the best to aim for, IMHO.
I only had an iTunes U server go down once with a massive hardware failure. I had a backup server ready ... it took about an hour to "go live" again. Luckily it happened at about 8:30 PM on a weeknight and only a handful of people were affected.

  • Routine Maintenance Suggestions -

Hoping I might get some suggestions. Can anyone fill me in on utilities and/or maintenance processes I should run on a regular basis in an effort to keep things running smoothly and quickly on my macbook? Disks, caches, temp files, etc.? I am noticing for the first time, my macbook has a bit of a lag with general use. Mind you, I use the machine all day at work. thanks.

I also use the Maintidget 1.0. widget.
