Any settings changes to best use SSD drives? - Intel X25M G2

Hi all... just got a Intel X25M G2 SSD drive and I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard. My question is:
What (if any) changes are there, to the default install, that will best take advantage of my SSD? I've read about the following
a) disabling the sudden motion sensor
b) disabling safe sleep (i.e. hibernate mode 0)
c) disabling spotlight
Can anyone comment on experience with these settings and are there any other ones I'm missing?
Any insights appreciated! Thanks.

Hey! How's the Performance? You've had it for 3 months now.

The Hard disc in this model is same size as SSD 2.5" drive?

    Hi
As mentioned above: the SATA controller is supported so you will need to use a SATA SSD drive usually it should not be a big problem to upgrade the notebook with an SSD drive in some cases it could be possible that the SSD firmware needs to be updated but this depends on the SSD drive manufacturer
However, the SSD drive is much faster than a common HDD. Therefore you should notice a faster performance

  • Can't resize partition after upgrading to Yosemite (using SSD drive)

I upgraded to 10.10 and using SSD drive now. When I was using OS X 10.8.5, I could freely resize partition but not anymore. I guess because of the SSD drive and the new version of OS X, and Logical Volume Group could be involved. I don't want to waste 80 GB of SSD drive so really looking for a solution now. Thanks in advance.

Yes, that's exactly what I did. I had to go back to my old snow leopard install DVD, use the disk utility on that to repartition the drive. I made 2 partitions, installed Snow Leopard on one, used that to install Yosemite on the other partition and trashed the snow leopard install.
I haven't yet tried the Yosemite USB install method which would have probably been faster as I could have avoided installing SL.

  • Best non-SSD drive for early 08 Sata I?

Hello everyone, what would be the best non-SSD HD for an early 08 machine?  I'm currently still using the 5400 250GB one that came with this machine so I'd imagine any current drive would be a huge step up from this one in terms of speed despite being held back by SATA I.  I would like for this machine to be used as a on the road Final Cut/Soundtrack so I'd prefer at least a 500GB drive.
What would you all reccomend in the 7200 speed range?  Should I bother with the Momentus XT hybrids or just stick with a traditional drive?

I agree with Templeton Peck, there is no 'best' drive.
Kappy's suggestions of Seagate drives is valid (I use them without any problems to date) but I would be hesitant about the hybrid version.  There have been issues reported in the past and personally I question the cost/benefits they afford.  I would rather spend the money on a 750GB 7200RPM drive instead, especially if you are going to do a lot of video work.
Remember that when you replace an internal HDD, you back up (Time Machine) drive should be at least the same capacity, thus you should think in terms of two HDDS.
Though you did not mention in your post, consider adding RAM if you have not done so already.
    Ciao.

  • Using SSD Drives for Booting and Apps

If I installed a fairly small SSD drive to boot from, would I be able to move my main Applications folder over to this drive as well? Would this improve an app's loading time as much as it improves the computer's booting time?
    Thanks,

This is a constant question with new threads all the time about SSD, moving or leaving home folder, and applications.

SSDs do better if they aren't so small that the lack of TRIM (made up for by background garbage collection) and over-provisioning, as well as handling write amplification.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Write_amplification
Sometimes the boot drive is going to be used, and needs that 20GB of free space. Some try to limit writing to SSD.
Smaller units don't always have the same specs, and some can be darn-right slow when it comes to writes. And especially true of some of the newest generation SSDs that are barely shipping now.
Pull your old drive and keep it off line as backup.
Copy your media and data folders and libraries.
Some leave their home folder with just home library ~/Library
Which is where your prefs, email, etc are kept and gets a lot of high I/O, but also where web browser abuse disk drives, generally doesn't get much beyond 1GB storage.
Boot time is over rated sign of performance. And for some reason can be slower. Not everyone is happy with apps launching, others find it makes a huge difference. Some SSDs I read where OS X wouldn't install so they had to clone their system using CCC or SuperDuper. CCC lets you copy just what you need.

Writing zeroes is not a good idea as it is still just 'writing'.
Any Sand Force (such as OWC that now switched to using SF controller) have BGC. The newer units have even more aggressive garbage collection.

  • Folder Redirection & Windows 8.1 using SSD Drive

I have Folder Redirection working on hundreds of computers using DFS.  It has been going well.  However, we recently deployed two Windows 8.1 machines to kick the tires on the OS.  The machines have SSD's for booting, so they boot very quickly.
We login and only the one drive is there that is the home directory.  I logoff, wait about a minute and login again and bingo they are all there.  So I did that little check mark on Group Policy to wait for it to finish completing before login,
but no luck.  The event warning I get is as follows:
The user 'W:' preference item in the 'Network Administrators {A8B731EA-F80D-4501-A790-2D0770AFD7A8}' Group Policy Object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070035 The network path was not found.' This error was suppressed.
    Any thoughts?

  • Question about AHCI setting for my pavilion DV6T-2000 in order to use SSD driver with TRIM support

    Hi
My operating system is Window 7 ultimate
1.I have just updated my ssd Corsair P256 firmware to the newest version which enables Trim
2.I typed " fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify " and got the result " 0 " , so it is good.
3.I go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci" and know that the "Start"name has Data value "0".
    4. I go to device manager and click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers". However, the only thing which i saw was:
"Intel(R) PCHM SATA AHCI Controller 6 Port"
i didn't see the "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller"
i tried to go the Bios setting to enable AHCI but HP bios won't let me change any setting except Booting priority. I am using the newest Bios version from HP(I have just updated it two days ago).
So my question is that: am i on set? or what i should do now to make the Trim work
if i am on set, does the Trim run automatically? do i need to do anything to maintain the SSD's performance?
    thank you

If you right click on "Intel(R) PCHM SATA AHCI Controller 6 Port" and select properties, then go to the Driver Tab and hit the Driver Details button, you will see the iastor, sys driver is installed, so AHCI is enabled.

  • Not enough space on my disk, want to change iphoto to use external drive

I dont have enough space on my hard disk. I want to use an external drive to put all my pictures. Is there a way I can configure iphoto to use my new drive instead of the current location. How can we do this and what will be the best way to move my existing library to the new drive.

    1. First make sure iPhoto is not running. If it is, quit it. Use the Finder to copy your iPhoto Library file to your external drive. Unless you've changed it, its located inside your Pictures folder and is named "iPhoto Library".
    2. After the copy is complete, start iPhoto while simultaneously holding down the option key. iPhoto will bring up a dialog box. The file in the list is your existing Library on your internal disk. Click the "Other Library" button and navigate to your external drive. Select your freshly copied iPhoto Library file and click "Open". iPhoto will from now on open and work with this library on the external drive.
    3. After you've confirmed iPhoto is working properly with the newly copied library you may wish to delete the original library in your Pictures folder to recover the disk space.
Don't forget to keep a backup copy of your library on a separate disk. It's not a matter of "if" your external drive will fail but "when". You need to make regular backups or you'll be sorry someday.

  • How To Best Use Three Drives in a Laptop Setup

    Hi Adobers,
I've got a laptop with the following specs:
CPU Type - Intel Core i7-3610QM
    CPU Speed - 2.3GHz
    CPU ID - 306A9h
Integrated Graphics - Intel Ivy Bridge
    Discrete Graphics 1 - Nvidia GT 650M
    Total Memory - 12GB
So I removed the optical drive and the hard disc drive so that's two drive slots available for whatever and I have an mSata slot so that's another drive option. I will be creating kinetic typography videos no more than 8 minutes long with minimal work in Premiere Pro which also would not be longer than 8 minutes. Now back to my laptop, the mSata slot and primary drive slot is Sata 3 and the optical disc slot is Sata 2. With that being said I was thinking about getting an mSata 128GB for the OS and programs. For the optical disc slot I would put in a HDD(in a caddy of course) for storage and then another HDD or SSD in the primary drive space as cache. My concern is if this is the right approach and if so then how much space should be on each drive including the mSata? If this is not the best configuration then what do you fellow Adobers suggest that I do regarding what types of drives I should use, such as SSD vs HDD, what should be the purpose of each drive, and how big should each one be? Also should I bump up my memory to 16GB or is that unnecessary?
    Thank You,
    Gio

  • Problems installing an SSD Drive in my 17-J050us

I purchased an HP 17-j050us laptop with the intent to upgrade the HD to an SSD drive to upgrade performance.
My laptop works well, I have had no problems with it.  However, when I tried to do a clone from my laptop's drive to my purchased seperately SSD drive (Intel 335 240 GB SSD) the cloning procedure would not work.
I ran Intel's data migration tool, and the SSD was recognized and things were proceeding smoothly until the laptop restarted to perform the copy operation.  When the laptop restarted to a black screen to begin copying, the software displayed the error message "failed to find,  exception code 1101838"
After doing some research it appears the problem is relating to the inablility to successfully use data migration software with UEFI systems, such as my laptop.
Does anyone know if Data migration is even possible on newer HP laptops with UEFI partitions?  I am at a loss as to how to procede now.
Does anyone have any experience with this?

You would have to buy a windows 8 OEM DVD, not retail, or the key wouldn't work.
The only thing you could try would be to make a set of recovery disks from your original hard drive and see if they will work on the SSD.
They probably won't though if the SSD is smaller than the original hard drive but you would have nothing to lose by trying.

  • Converting to SSD Drive for Boot Drive on m7 with Win8

I just bought a new m7-j020dx (product code E4S19UA#ABA) with Windows 8 from Best Buy.  Unfortunately, it came with a standard hard disk drive (HDD) and I would like to install a Solid State Drive (SSD).  I have an Intel 320 and 530 series drive.  But I have not been able to get a bootable drive from this.
The first thing I tried was cloning the factory drive to a new 530 series drive using AOMEI Backupper.  I got a write error on the third partition.  I thought perhaps the drive was bad so I tried it again with an Intel 320 series SSD drive.  Same error.
The next attempt was to clone the drive to another 1 TB drive (connected via USB), shrink the main partition with MiniTool and clone to the 320 series SSD.  The cloning went fine.  However, with the new SSD installed, the computer will not boot and I get "Error0x0000225", something about a file not found.  Turning off "secure boot" in the BIOS setup did not help (I did this after the clone).
So I thought I would make a clean install of Win 8.  I generated a recovery disk on a 32GB SanDisk USB drive using Win8's recovery disk generator (as instructed on the HP site).  I then ran the recovery program off the USB drive and after a couple of hours of installing driver software and several reboots, I get an HP message stating the installation was not complete.  Repeating the install did not help.
I am not sure what the problem is.
Is the USB recovery disk a made from the original HDD bad (one only gets one shot at it)?  Do I need to order media from HP on disks?  Are there issues with using SSD drives on these computers?  Do I not have a BIOS settig correctly (UEFI)?  Is there some Intel storage drivers getting in the way?
I think my next step will be to create a disk Image and then put it back to the SSD drive.  But I doubt this fixes the issue with booting to it.
Another option might be to do a fresh build using Win8 media and then download and install each driver from the HP website.
Any ideas out there in the land of experts?

  • What is the difference off sd and ssd driver ?

    Hi,
I don't understand what is the difference between sd and ssd driver ?

    Hi
    Read
    man sd
    man ssd
sd - driver for SCSI disk
    ssd driver for FC disk.
What driver will used depend what report driver of controller (HBA).
For example you install Qlogic HBA.
In case you install drivers from Qlogic - they report that is SCSI controller and will used sd driver.
In case you install driver from Oracle ( SUN) that bundled with SAN Foundation Kit, they report that is FC card and
    will used ssd driver.

  • Why is my iMac Start up SSD Drive filling up without any use?

I noticed yesterday that my main boot drive, my SSD drive, on my iMac was seriously depleting in memory without me doing anything or downloading anything either so much so that but 10pm last night it was saying my start up drive was full. I ran Disk Utility on the drive and it said I had a problem and should run in Recovery HD so rebooted the computer and ran it, it said it had fixed permissions so thought all was okay but after rebooting again the memory is still running down!
I also tried erasing the disk and using Time Machine as a back up from a previous time, this had no effect. I thought it could be a Snow Leopard update that came in yesterday but that doesn't seem to be the problem as I have used a back up from before I updated...
I'm literally watching the 'Used' numbers from the Get Info on my SSD drive go up infront of my eyes every few seconds.
Any help would be much appriciated!

In your Mountain Lion's Time Machine settings, you are now allowed to designate not just one only, but multiple Time Machine backup drives, though you don't have to.  I'm wondering if possibly your TM settings are backing up one of your internal hard drives both to your external hard drive AND to the internal SSD drive.  You might want to check to see if that is the case, and if so, change it.
    Hope this helps
