Any software or tool for disable USB mass storage ?

Hi,
I am a trainee IT admin in a company with 300+ Mac machines.
we have integrated all systems in a domain hosted on Windows Server for authentication.
For disabling USB mass storage, we have manually removed .kext file from all machines. But it was quite a difficult job and need to perform every-time after  Software Update.
Is there any alternate way or a Software/Tool which can disable USB mass storage permanently ?
Thanks in advance.

Sure.  This is cake.  MCX supports this.  How are the Macs configured?  Are they bound to Active Directory?  Open Directory?  JAMF?  The state of directory association/management will determine how you implement.

  • Disabled usb mass storage

i accidentally disabled my ipod by right hand clicking on the icon on the bottom tool bar while it was a mass storage device b/c i was trying to make it work. now it won't communicate with my computer. it flashes green twice then green/amber then does it all over again, and again, and again... i've plugged it into another computer(and noticed it only flashes this way once, not continuously) and finally got it back to an mp3 by changing the drive letter but that doesn't help me on my computer where my music library is. i've gone into device manager but there's no disabled usb device to re-enable. i've deleted all usb controllers and re-enstalled with no luck. i've uninstalled ipod and itunes software but it makes no difference. someone else brought their flash drive over, plugged it in and it worked fine. usb drives work with my camera too. PLEASE HELP!!!!

  • Disabling of USB Mass Storage affects Default Printer setup

When I try to disable USB Mass Storage using HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor equals
4, the default local Printer i.e. HP LaserJet Pro 400 - M401D stopped working.
To avoid this thing, I have to once again enable the USB feature using
3 and re-install the printer driver along with all its application.
It never happened when tried in Windows XP Professional earlier.
Can you please provide solution of this?

    Hi,
In Windows 7, you can disable USB by following GPO:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Removable Storage Access
Removable Disks: Deny execute access Enabled
Removable Disks: Deny read access Enabled
Removable Disks: Deny write access Enabled

  • Arch instance living on USB mass storage device is very slow

I installed an instance of Arch on a USB stick.  This is a full installation, not a ramdisk-based "installer" or anything.  However, this little guy is very, very slow.  Sometimes, I have to wait for almost a minute between writes while the UI locks up (XFCE4, in case you're curious).
I think a lot of the problem comes from iowait load and pending write requests.  I've been considering experimenting with data=writeback, but I've never used this ext option before, and thought I'd ask you guys about it first.  I hear that sudden power failure can lead to pretty severe data loss with writeback enabled.  Anyone have any experience with this?  Are there any other tweaks I can apply to increase performance that would be appropriate for a USB mass storage device?  I have noatime enabled, but that only gives it an almost unnoticeable bump.

  • USB Mass Storage for Zen MicroPh

Is there a way now or plans for the Xen MicroPhoto to work as a USB Mass Storage device so I can plug it into any windows-xp box and copy mp3 files without any special software.
This is what I expected from Creative products and the main reason I stayed from the ipod and their itunes interface.

packrat555 wrote:your first suggestion work but I can;t play the mp3 files. If I wanted a usb hd I would have bought one.
You were asking about UMS, and that's as good as it gets unfortunately. It's only designed for moving data files around, but it's better than nothing.
I don't use MediaPlayer at all so I'll try another system with v0 but it still doesn't do what it should. If it showed as a dri've letter then we could use whatever software we wanted to move files. Seems like a lot of the software questions here would go away.
It's shown as a device in Windows Explorer, and you can drag and drop. Doesn't get much easier than that. If you're using the v2 MTP firmware anyway this should always be present as it requires Windows Media Player 0.

  • IMac cannot detect ANY usb mass storage device.

iMac Core 2 Duo (White) cannot detect ANY usb mass storage device including iPod. Only Mice and Keyboards work via usb. Any solutions? OS X shows absolutely nothing when any usb device is connected.

Try resetting the PRAM. Hold down Option-Cmd--P-R together at the startup chime. Wait for two more chimes, total three, then let go to finish booting.
Try an SMC Reset. Shutdown, unplug from power, wait ten minutes, still unplugged, hold power button in for five seconds. Reconnect to power.
Run the Hardware Test in extended.

  • Does newScale has any built-in tools for "trend" monitoring?

Does newScale has any built-in tools for "trend" monitoring?
A couple questions being asked by my peers and I am not sure how to answers on 'trending' like:
How did a user get here (to the order form - through searching or navigating the service catalog)?
Is the service catalog in RC helpful or working as it is intended?
The team is working on putting together the service catalog for the RC, and they would like to know whether there's any tools available in newScale that would have some statistic on how people are using it.
    Any suggestion?

If your question of "is the service catalog in RC helpful or working as intended?" can be answered by the order volume trends, you might want to explore using the Reporting and Analytics capability in RequestCenter.
You can design these reports to provide the volume trends (even with charts):
Order Volume by Service Group over time
Order Volume by Service over time
Month over month service completion volume
    etc.

  • USB Mass Storage Device won't Eject/Unmount

My brother bought a Sanyo ICR-B180NX digital voice recorder last year to use with his iBook. It was working very well up until about August of 2005. At that point, the recorder would mount on the desktop, and he could get all the files off (it records direct to MP3 format rather than WMV, so he can edit his files very easily), but when it came time to eject it, the device icon would disappear and then immediately re-appear on the desktop. The display on the voice recorder remained static at the "Connect" screen.
I believe this happened in conjunction with some sort of OS update, as it was a "sudden" thing. We can't quite recall what happened between the times it worked and the time it stopped working.
I have tried the device on a PC, and it works the way it should, so I don't believe there's anything wrong with it.
Now, I know the system requirements on the website say that you must have Windows, but a statement from a support company (we returned it to the place where we got it, and they sent it out for repairs, and it came back with a letter) states that the device does act as a generic Mass Storage device, and thus may work with most systems.
All my other USB storage devices (ie. SanDisk 12-in-1 card reader, SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 2GB, iPod Photo), and FireWire devices (ie. WiebeTech TrayDock Extreme) work fine and unmount fine.
Does anyone know of any changes to the way Mass Storage devices are ejected in the current iteration of the OS? I haven't had a chance to test the device under an older OS, but will soon.
Alternately, if anyone has any suggestions regarding replacements (not really looking forward to that, given this recorder cost almost $300CAD), let me know. We need a device that can plug in via USB and transfer files to his iBook which he can edit together (he's a newspaper reporter in training, and needs to edit the interviews to take out such things like dead air, etc).
    Thanks!
    Mike Ma.

    Hi
+USB mass storage device. An error occurred during the installation of the device the data is invalid+
This typical error message appears if the installation of external USB devices failed.
Why? This is not easy to say
What you could do firstly is to clean your registry using the freeware software called CCleaner (Google for that).
Install it and clean your OS and the registry entries.
After cleaning access the device manager and remove all USB root hubs and all USB Host controllers from the device list and reboot the notebook.
New reboot should cause a new installation of USB drivers.
Finally try to connect and try to install your external USB devices again.

  • Windows 7 64-bit not loading USB mass storage driver

I have a rather strange problem with my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  Everything seems to work fine except for USB mass storage devices.  I have USB keyboard, mouse and even a USB audio (wireless headset) all working fine on the computer.  But
any USB external drive, thumdrive or USB card reader with flash cards inserted into the USB port of my computer won't work.
Windows keeps reporting that it is unable to find the driver.  When I go into the Device Manager console and choose to manually update the driver, then point it to the C:\Windows (with search for sub-directories enabled), it detects the USB Mass Storage
driver but complains that it is unable to load it.  The exact message is this:  Windows found driver software for your device but encountered error while attempting to install it.  USB Mass Storage Device.  The system cannot find the file
    specified.
This happens to ALL USB Mass storage device, and it doesn't matter which port I plug the device into.
Here's the weird thing, I have VMware Workstation installed on this computer and if I power on a VM that runs Windows 7 32-bit as the Guest OS and connect the USB storage devices to the guest OS via VMware Workstation, the USB storage devices work!
So it would appear that the USB ports are functioning properly but for some reasons, my Windows 64-bit is unable to load the driver.
Any idea how to fix this besides a "nuke it from orbit" and format/reinstall Windows?
    Thanks.

I'm very excited to finally have a solution for this problem. Thank You Balaji for figuring this out. I've been struggling with this for a number of years, and had only one USB Hard Drive that worked. I too have VMware workstation, and had the missing files
in "c:\windows\inf." I can say with certainty that I did not delete the files from that folder, but something is common in both of our situations. Maybe it has to do with VMware, and some of it's updates over the years. I'm also using nCompute to share out
a networked desktop via the wire.
One more thing worthy of mention is this machine was an update from Windows Vista, and the USB hard drive that worked was configured back than. So although I could never add another HD, at least I had the one.
Now with having copied over the files, I can plugin other USB enclosures with different drives and they too are working.
Like you mentioned, it was always possible to use USB devices within my Virtual Machines, so it was clear that the USB ports were functional. I actually got the files from a clean Windows 7 VM, copying out the \windows\inf folder and doing a compare between
the the real one and the virtual one. I found the two missing files you mentioned, along with 8 others. I went ahead and included them all in your fix.
It worked, Amazing. Thanks again. :O)

  • Samsung A900 USB mass storage and Tiger

I just got a Samsung A900 phone, when I connect with USB as mass storage device, the phone is mounted write protected in 10.4.3. In 10.3.9, it mounts as a writeable drive.

Hi there. I just bought a Samsung A900 and figured out how to use the phone as a USB Mass storage device:
My setup is a PowerBook G4 with 10.4.6 all updates (including the latest Security Updates and iLife '06 updates).
    1. Plug the USB cable into the phone, and your computer.
    2. The phone should say "USB Cable connected" on the main screen. If it doesn't, turn the phone off, and back on again with the cable plugged in.
    3. Press the Menu button
    4. Go to Tools
    5. Go to Mass Storage
    6. Select "Connect to PC."
You will not be able to receive phone calls while the phone is in USB Mass Storage mode.
A new volume should appear in the OS X Finder as "Untitled."
You have access to the same folders as with a Bluetooth connection.
Unfortunately, this also means that it is not a solution to get custom ring tones from an MP3 you own.
I tried looking in Terminal for any hidden folders, and I can't find any. I honestly think a firmware update/hack is needed to enable this on the phone.
    Hope this helps.
