Any Solutions for DFS, SMB  Volumes for Mac Users

Hi All,
We are thinking of setting up X server to manage our growing mac user base. A major question is how or if X server can provide a way of giving mac users network access on par with windows users. In our case- we use Microsoft's DFS (Distributed File System). Apple does not support DFS. We have used AdmitMac so we have had a way of dealing with it.
With X Server, is there a way I can "reshare" smb volumes from windows servers in a way that would resemble what windows users see?

Did you figure anything out? I'm interested in doing something similar if you find an answer.

  • Is there any solution to the message delay for iPads and iPods?

My bf and I are having problems with a delay in receiving messages between us. We both have quality Internet, but the messages will be delayed sometimes from a few minutes, hours to even a day later... Is there any solution/fix?

    Hey TKat88,
Thanks for the question. The following article will provide the most relevant troubleshooting information for iMessage:

You'll also want to check that both devices are using separate Apple ID's, as this would cause problems as well.

  • Creating aliases on a smb volume for 10.5 and using aliase from 10.5 in 10.7

We are accessing a Windows File Server (SMB (NTFS)) with some Mac Pro's using Leopard and some Mac's with Lion. Aliase created with Leopard and older Mac OS Versions can not be used with Lion. Aliase created with Lion can not be used with Leopard. Clicking at the aliases from the other Mac OS version will open the Terminal, but not open the original file or folder.
Leopard creates two files, for example myAliase and ._myAliase. The invisible file contains the data.
Lion creates only one file myAliase with the data.
How can we use and create the old styled aliases from older Mac OS Versions?

…My question is:  can you actually run Mac OS X 10.5 on a PC box just like that, so there's no need to actually buy a Mac-Intel machine from Apple?
OK, so the answer to my own question is "not 'just like that'" and "not legally".  I was not aware of current advances in the ease of building a Hackintosh, which I confess had not even crossed my mind when I first posted my question.

  • Any way to increase movie volume for iPad2?

I've tried various headsets and the volume seems to be a little weak on all. The best was Bose's over-the-ear type. I'm planing a trip back east soon and with two kids using a splitter I'm thinking more volume is going to be needed. Suggestions?

You can do this in GarageBand, but personally I find Audacity much easier for stuff like this:

Let me know if you go that way, and I'll tell you how to do it.

  • I own CS5 for PC, but now a Mac user, must I purchase again?

If I own CS5 for PC, now I have a Macbook Pro, do I have to purchase again?

If you had current version you could get a cross licence.  But now your option is to upgrade to CS6 for a mac, or subscribe which allows either OS.

  • Not enough room for iWork, please help new mac user!

I'm a college student in great need of a word processing application for my Powerbook G4. I just bought iWork for that reason and am stuck because I don't know how to get rid of the right things on the Hard drive to make enough room for it. It says it needs 74.4GB and only has 62.3GB free on the hard drive. Please let me know how I can free up space and get my homework done asap! Thanks, Caro

You should have a look at OmniGroup's OmniDiskSweeper application, which you can find here:
    http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/
This application will analyse your hard disk usage and list all the files according to category (application, document, etc.) and size, thus making it easy to identify large and useless files. Note that this application is, technically speaking, not free, as you have to pay $15 to enable the delete button. However, if you've identified several large files which you'd like to delete, you can easily do that in the Finder, so from a practical point of view, DiskSweeper is free. Oh, one last suggestion: be careful when deleting stuff. Try avoiding deleting stuff that is on your system or library folders, UNLESS you really know what you are doing.

  • Any solution for the Exchange "does not delete" / "does not expunge" bug?

Other than using Synchronica, has any solution been found or released for the iPhone/Exchange bug where messages deleted on the iPhone are not deleted from the server (but rather just left there & shown as "read")?

Yes. The issue here is that iPhone does not issue the "expunge" command after deleting the message. If you have a PC at work and are using Outlook, you may want to run a utility that will periodically expunge the deleted messages so you don't have to do double duty deleting. A good one is here -- note, you must scroll down to the comments for the link to the updated binary that supports SSL if it is enabled on your Exchange server:

  • PSE 4.0 for Mac - user help anywhere?

I just purchased PSE 4.0 for my ibook -- i took a PSE class (for 4.0 and 5.0 but i was for PC) last december... Im finding even the basic things are diffrent and im getting really frustrated --im just wondering if theres any resouces that will help a new mac user for PSE? Everything i search for comes up with PC help only... i ordered 'the missing manual 4.0' but im afraid that its going to only be PC help?? ugh....
    thanks in advance...

The editor is exactly the same in both versions, but the mac version does not have the Organizer and its functions. It has Adobe Bridge instead. I'm afraid you won't find a book that deals with the mac version specifically. This is because Adobe only provided the windows version; there was no mac version available when everyone was writing. However, having said that, if you substitute Command (apple key) for ctrl, and option for alt, pretty much everything about the editor side of the program in any book will work for you. The only book I know of that also includes mac keystrokes is Richard Lyinch's Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements (www.hiddenelements.com). While an excellent book that everyone who is serious about PE should own, it's not necessarily the best starting place if you have no experience with digital imaging/retouching software.
If you have specific questions, post them here and someone can help you.

  • Changing volume for phone calls.

is there any way to change the volume for phone calls besides the outside volume key?? I tried "sounds" in settings and it did not work.

Your volume switches work differently depending on what you are doing. You may get a readout above the "speaker" symbol that appears on the screen telling you what volume is being adjusted.
If you are not using anything, the volume switches adjust the ringer volume.
If you are playing music or video, they adjust the music/video volume.
If your headphone are plugged in, they adjust the headset volume.
If you are actually on a call, the adjust the earpiece volume or speakerphone volume (without a readout).
If you are on a phone call using bluetooth, they adjust the bluetooth volume.
Dial a recording like the National Time Signal (303) 499-7111 and adjust the volume during the call.

  • Yellow tinted screen display on my newly bought iPhone 5. Any solutions?

Hi, I have an issue on my iPhone 5. I bought this iPhone 5 1week ago and I encounter yellow tinted screen when I compare it with my iPhone 4. Any solutions to it or reasons for this? Hope to hear soon.

Contact Apple at feedback or take it back to where you purchased it. These are user to user forums and you are not speaking to Apple here.
    Good Luck

    Hey everyone,
I want to install windows 8 32bit on my mac pro (mid 2012). I upgraded the windows 7 I already had, but now I dont have drivers at all...
I searched drivers for the windows 8 32 bit but couldn't find any...
    Any solutions guys?
    Thanks a lot.
    Sincerely,
    Chiponn

There's been an update for OSX ML which addresses the issue for installing Windows 8 on bootcamp.
It's NOT recommended that you Upgrade.. However, the way to get the drivers is:
You'll need an external USB drive formatted as FAT for this.
    1) In OSX, start the Bootcamp Assistant
    2) Press Next
    3) UNTICK 'Remove WIndows 7 or Later Version'
    4) TICK Download the Latest Windows Support Software from Apple
    5) Insert USB drive
    6) Press CONTINUE
The drivers should download, and copy a WIndowsSupport folder onto the USB drive.
I did notice that Windows 8 still requires beta drivers for some aspects such as VGA (the Radio HD Card), which you can get on the AMD website.
Futhermore, why are you using Windows 8 "32" bit when you blatently have a powerful 64bit?
Anyway, hope this post helps ;-)

I just bought a new iMac and am having troubles downloading creative cloud installer.  Its coming up with error 214 - I can't find any solutions for this.  Can anyone help me?  Im on mac OS 10.9.4

Meg81 error 214 indicates a download data validation error.  This means that the update you downloaded became corrupted likely during the download process.  I would recommend utilizing the suggestions listed in Error downloading Creative Cloud applications - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/error-downloading-cc-apps.html to attempt to improve the stability of your Internet connection.
You can also find information on how to review your download logs which may provide additional information regarding the failure of the download.
