Any suggestions for editing Music Videos with Multiclip?

Hi there. I have been reading about the new multiclip feature in FCPHD5. Sounds as if it would be perfect for editing a performance music video with multiple run throughs. In fact it almost seems too good to be true. I was writing to ask if anyone has tried this and what problems they encoutnrered or what workflow they could recommend. I haven't used multiclip before (or editied many music videos either) and would appreciate any suggestions.
This is my idea so far.
capture offlineRT the whole tape, make subclips with an angle setting of each take. Then edit the multiclip in a timeline which includes the song as an audio track. I thought I would synch with inpoints manually set to the beginning of the songs first riff in playback (as there was no clapper on set that day, curse them)
I have questions about onlining as well and how to make it a less tormenting nerve racking experience. Maybe its just me but the thought of trashing all the media, duplicating projects and recapturing makes me break out in a cold sweat. But I'll deal with that later.
Thanks for your thoughts, observations, suggestions.
Have a merry Christmas
Sincerely
Peter Stenhouse

The plan was to sync up the mixed PT audio to the video track. However the club screwed up the recording and I was left with using the audio from one of the tripod mounted cameras that I placed a stereo mike on.< </div>
General advice for live performances:
1. Depending on a computer to make the only recording is a silly idea. Use tape or a minidisk. Take a line feed off the main board and record it on at least one of the cameras.
2. There is nothing that will substitute for missing timecode better than a good countdown. Insist the band develop a creative visual and aural timing cue that all cameras and mics can see.
3. The most important part of shooting a performance or a lipsync gig for mulitcamera assembly is preproduction. The bugs, glitches and gotchas are all well known and thoroughly documented on thousands of band blogs.
4. There is no excuse to go into a location shoot unprepared and carrying a solid backup plan for all of the stuff that will go wrong.
5. A full, all-camera, all-personnel rehearsal is a good idea.
6. The band's lighting guy knows nothing about video. Give him some help or give him the day off.

    Hello Poopy Head,
There are some resources that can get you started programing your DAQ device. You can access the Interactive tutorials.

  • Any suggestions for possible hardware problem with 8320

Having a problem with 8320.  Phone seems to be scrolling by itself.  Making the scrolling noise and mouse is moving by itself.  Unfortunately when this happens, I can't do anything else involving the trackball.  I have cleaned the trackball and updated the software hoping that it would help.  It hasn't.  To the best of my knowledge the phone has never taken any sort of shock from dropping.  Any suggestions, aside from purchasing a new phone?

  • Any suggestions for an old-timer dually seeker?

I work on my old (late '06) 1.83 GHz Intel iMac 17" doing some graphic design (advanced amateur) for non-profits w/CS2. As my skill level grows, so does my need for a second larger monitor. I'm looking for advice on purchasing a 23/24" monitor with the highest resolution this machine can support. Of course, wonder of wonders, there are scant resources ($$$). Any suggestions for this old timer with the failing eyesight?
    Thanks
    Larry

Steer clear of the new cinema display, or any glossy one for that matter.
A good H-IPS panel monitor is what you need. I suggest http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824176104 it needs to be calibrated out of the box, but when it is, it beats anything in that price range hands down. H-IPS, anti-glare, height adjustment, swivel, and for under 600.

  • Which codec to choose for a music video edit with this setup?

I am using a new camera (for me that is) a Panasonic Hdc Sd700 and have shot a music video with two of these cameras. I am using Clipwrap to encode and the options as far as I can see are:
    Apple Intermediate Codec (Aic)
    Apple ProRes 422
    Apple Prores 422 HQ.
I am going to use some effects so there will be several tracks of video to deal with. I have an external esata drive and another external FW800 drive.
I am working on a laptop (Macbook Pro) with these specs: 4 Gb Ram, 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Is 422 HQ to much too handle for this machine?
I still have much to learn .....

Is 422 HQ to much too handle for this machine?
It's overkill anyway, just based on the camera you are using. Regular ProRes or ProRes LT will be fine.
    Don't use Apple Intermediate.

For a new hard drive try Newegg.com

To transfer your current hard drive I like the applications Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. They make a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive. http://www.bombich.com/index.html or http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

There seems to be a problem, just now, with the USB 3 ports on the new MBP's supporting eternal USB 3 drives. Some people have no luck at all - can't even recognize the drive - and some are reporting USB 2 speeds (those who drives are recognized). I'd call a dealer such as LaCie or OWC to see if they have USB 3 drives that actually work with MBP's with USB 3 ports. You may have to wait for a software/firmware update.

Amazon Prime reply app does not allow video airplay - nor do several other content providers.
It must have something to do with digital rights/copyright.

    Hi Mark
Was just looking for the answer to this exact question and I just found something that worked for me so don't know if it might be of use to you or you might have already solved your problem!  Basically when I was in iMovie and I clicked to import movies from the computer into iMovie and I found the clip I wanted to import, there are a few options.  I think it asked which Event I wanted to add it to but most importantly it asked me what file size I wanted...I had originally been clicking Large because it advised me to because it reduces the file size...but just on a chance there I selected 'Full - Original' for size and it imported perfectly into iMovie in it's original vertical form!
    Hope this helps!

I recently replaced the hard drive in my computer.  I am afraid to download and reinstall itunes again because I worry about losing all the music I had on my iPod Nano.  Any suggestions for solutions?

    The dragging does not work:
    - Transfer iTunes purchases by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - For other music you will need a third-party program like one of those discused here:
    Copy music
    - Connect the iPod to your compouter and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up.
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Nothe that the backup that iTunees makes does not include synced media like apps nd music.

  • A different concept for producing music video's..is it possible?

    Hi,
In preparing for a music video shoot this week I wondered if a feature in Soundtrack Pro 2 could be put into FCP 7???
I am recording the music (10 min) of piano and cello for a tango. After editing I will play it back for dancers. It would be incredible if I could play it back in Soundtrack Pro which would sync to FCP capture window, and use the multiple take feature to keep recording over the same timeline space with different video takes. They would line up on different video tracks in FCP and the audio would stay the same. That way you could immediately see if all of your music was covered with footage that you like. It would save a lot of post production time.
Could this be possible in the future?
On another note, I am recording with the Letus 35 depth of field adapter for a film look. Is there any advantage of recording in Prores 422 HQ over DVCPro HD? I'm shooting on a HVX-200 with P2 or I could go into an AJA IOHD. I plan to bring it into Color after the shoot. Any advice would be appreciated
    David Perry
