Any suggestions on hosting my own website with OS X Server?

I am currently taking the International Baccalaureate programme, taking visual art as a higher level subject. And my university counselor os suggesting me to create my own website as an online portfolio for all my work, I have a 2010 MacBook hanging around that I don't really use and should be capable to host a server from my home. Just before I go right in and buy OS X Server is there anything else I should know about hosting my own website for an online pro to flip? Think of it as an online gallery. Thanks ahead!

Actually another thing, I'm trying to see what software I can use to make my website, I don't want to use iWeb it's just a little to rudimentary (in my opinion). Any other web development software that is user friendly and can create semi professional websites? Would be best if no coding is involved since I have no idea how to.

  • Hosting my own website/or a few on my Mac!

Is it possible to host my own website/or a few on my own Mac? My isp does allow it and my Mac is at present always connected 24/7

this really depends on dyndns - e.g. it is dependent on the number of machine names they will assign to your 'domain'. Assuming this is some number >1, then you can setup name based virtual hosting in your httpd.conf file for any number of virtual hosts. this number can be large - but i do not know the limit (this should be dictated by apache and the specs of your computer). for more apache doc on the subject, see (and quote below):
    http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/vhosts/name-based.html
With name-based virtual hosting, the server relies on the client to report the hostname as part of the HTTP headers. Using this technique, many different hosts can share the same IP address.
personally, i don't use dyndns (we have static ips and dns here @ work to allow the adjustments), so i can't provide too much additional information. however, a google search and/or experimentation should provide your answer.
    good luck,

  • How can i host my own website through the server?

    Hello,
I am very new to the server and I bought it specifacally because I thought I could host my own website and not have to go through something like godaddy.
How can I do this with the Mac OSX Lion Server? Have a domain name and publish it through something like iWeb?

you will need a static ip address that either points to the server with port forwarding or is on its nic card. You then have to set up your dns entries and point your domain name to your dns server. You can then turn on web services.

  • Hosting your own website, need lots of info.

    Hi,
I have seen another post on this forum about hosting your own website on your Mac, and it wasn't very clear. What do I need, and what do I do?

Yeah, I do. How do I host multiple websites?
You will need to learn how to edit the apache configuration file located at
    /etc/httpd/httpd.conf
You will then need to learn about virtual hosts and you will probably learn to edit your webservers document root path as you gain experience.
have a look at some articles on apache virtual hosts

You will have to configure your DNS (Domain Name server) settings. Usually this is done on an administartion panel web page the company you registered your domain provides. You probably don't want to host your own DNS server, and hopefully depending on the company they will provide basic services to point the .com to your IP at no additional cost.
For the long run, you might want to consider running a dedicated server, or payign for professional hosting, especially when the number of visitors increase.

  • Hosting an ecommerce website with iMac and Mac server app

Would it be possible to run an effective small business website which includes an online store using my iMac (or Mac mini), a WYSIWYG editor, my current ISP, plus, do effective SEO, configure and employ other revenue streams in addition to my own website shopping cart feature such as google shopping and implement other revenue streams on my website like ad-sense?
I need to set-up an ecommerce site for my small business which I just bought a domain for.  What I'm trying to find out is if it is better to use a web host, or, if I could use my iMac with the Apple server app (or buy the mini server) and host it myself.  I don't have any programming language skills, but, I believe I am capable of doing this myself once I begin to comprehend and practice the neccasary processes to make all of this happen.

Getting the easy question out of the way: yes, an iMac running Server.app and add-on eCommerce software can do this.
Now for the tougher question: should you?  You're signing on for maintaining and updating and troubleshooting and potentially site remediation and decontamination after issues or security attacks.  You are also signing up for PCI compliance, if you're not working with another entity for credit-card processing.  (Anything with credit card data is a target for attacks; there's money involved.)
There're the more germane aspects, too: ensuring your (static IP) network links have bandwidth, availability and latency (eg: ISP bandwidth, pingdom or other uptime checks, et al), and maintaining your servers against crashes and corruptions and hardware failures (eg: RAID, possibly redundant systems); maintaining site access against the usual sorts of outages.  Software updates for OS X and for the ecommerce software and whatever other dependencies are involved, too.  Regular backups are most definitely required.
Or alternatively: getting somebody to maintain this stuff for you, either hosted, or dedicated to and on your server(s) and your network links, or on your own co-lo servers.
All this in addition to running your business, and writing (good, frequently updated) content that'll draw in the search engine ranking and/or buying search keywords or whatever you're doing for advertising that'll draw in potential customers, and dealing with the finances and the rest.
Servers are somewhat different from clients, in terms of system management, too.  Servers involve more than one user when they're out, and so you're not rebooting or reconfiguring them nearly as often as client systems can be modified.  Servers can also tend to chew up bandwidth, if you're successful.
Key to running a business is figuring out what you don't need to do (either at all, or that you can outsource or host or whatever, or hire out for, etc), so that you can focus on what you do need to do to make the business successful...  If you're just getting going and not into system administration and programming payment gateways and the rest of running a server, I'd suggest hosting the ecommerce stuff, at least to start with.  Unless you want to learn how to run an ecommerce site, that is...

  • I am trying to host my own website/mail server

I am pretty new with osx server and from all the info i found was to create a "intranet" per say.. I have AT&T uverse and I am hosting my own site..that part was pretty easy even tho i am not sure if i did set up the DNS server right... i set up the DNS server as the same as my website... I.E. mywebsite.com i am able to visit the site as long as i am not in my internal network.. and i also was able to set up the mail server but I can only send emails and not recieve from my iPhone.. and via web i can not even access the email... can someone help me? I also can not see my calender listed on workgroup under my account.. so i can not access over iphone either...
    Can anyone help me?

What do the zone files show in the DNS settings in Server Admin? There should be a primary and reverse zone for the machine name and its network address.
I also recommend using a static network address rather than DHCP for servers. Assign a static network address in your router for the server's MAC address. In the network settings in System Preferences on the server, select DHCP with manual address and enter the same IP address you assigned it in the router. Make sure the router IP address is entered correctly in the server's network settings.
As for accessing it from the Internet, you need either a dedicated IP address or a dynamic IP forwarding service. The IP address in the A record in the name servers for the domain should be fixed. You will have problems if you're using a dynamic IP address and constantly updating your name servers because of the propagation lag.

  • Display video on my own website with WVC54GCA

I have my own website and I want to display my webcam video on it.
Currently I'm using the TOZ (as well as linksys-cam.com), but wanted to know if I could display the video on my own website without all the linksys UI surrounding the video.
I want just the video portion to display on my own domain - does that make sense?  Is this possible?

  • Streaming radio to my website with BC basic server

hello, i wonder if i can apply streaming radio to my web with BC basic server , or i need a special server?

    Hi there,
IF you have a audio source or flash video source and apply a player (something you have to do with javascript of flash) you can host such files on your BC site.
It will be easier and also help with your SEO and traffic if you put such videos up on youtube or vimeo for example and embed those on to your site as an option.
These would not use your space on your server, I am sure there are audio hosts similar to these as well if you do not want to make a video out of it.

  • Can I host my own website?

I have a website that is just a placeholder, but its used for email. I have about 20 users and its starting to cost a lot with spam filters, fixed ips etc.
Right now I am in the market for a mac mini and wondering if the mini sever will allow me to be the server of my email website and still retain all the functions that I currently have like IMAP, webmail access etc and also if I could add a push application so that email appears on my iphone as its received.
Any help and advice would be great.

Depends on your ISP and your plan with them. Some ISPs block all server ports including web and email. Some have business plans where you can host servers. Some allow servers for non-commercial only. So your computer is capable but will your ISP allow it? And, your bandwidth may be significantly less than if you hosted your site at a hosting company which will have the servers, bandwidth, and connections to handle the demand without interfering with your neighbor's connections to the same ISP as you.

  • PSE 5-send photo gallery to own website with FTP

I'm a newcomer to PSE and
want to send a photo gallery to a website which i am setting up. The PSE instructions ask for FTP details so that it can send the information to a folder with the host. I propose setting up the website using an old version of Dreamweaver MX2004. Can I import this folder straight in to Dreamweaver please, and does anyone know what type of file it is? Is it a HTML file?
    Many thanks

The FTP folder contains many types of files. Some of which maybe html, xml etc.

I personally might not buy Wireless-N, but the idea of being on the bleeding edge is nice.
Anyway, whichever router you choose, you should be able to accomplish almost everything you need.
You'll be able to share your internet amongst all of the computers, and share files between them all. Local firewalls and permission settings on individual computers could potentially pose a problem.
Sending media to your TV may or may not be possible, depending on what other hardware you have. A router itself would not be able to do that, as a TV doesn't usually have any form of WiFi, but if you had a box connected to it for displaying content on the TV, you could do something like that...
Wireless speakers are generally a separate wireless system. As far as I know, there is a wireless transmitter that sits next to the amp (or other sound source), and broadcasts the music wirelessly to the speakers. You'd have to make sure the speakers and wireless router are on different channels as to not cause interference.
Don't know much about the media extender, but highly likely will be compatible with XP.
