Any suggestions on keeping an iPod from freezing?

I am having somewhat of a problem here. Whenever I go snowboarding, I get down half a run and my iPod (30G 5th Gen.) and it "freezes" and shuts off. When this happens, I try turning it on again and the hard drive sounds like its clicking, and then proceeds to show me the "Sad iPod" icon. The funny thing is that when i get back to my car and plug it in to my Monster Cable, it runs just fine.
My friend has the exact same iPod as me and he does not have any problems with his iPod when he snowboards with me. I've tried everything; socks, gloves, keeping it close to my body (closer than you want to think about), and other various methods. But my friend, as i have said, has no problems. So meanwhile, i have to snowboard without music. Can any one explain this to me? Why is this happening?
If anyone has any suggestions, i'll be glad to hear it.

In most cases, the sad iPod icon indicates a hardware issue. The fact that your iPod comes back to life in the car may signify a temperature problem.
"Keeping iPod within acceptable temperatures Operate iPod in a place where the
temperature is always between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). iPod play time might
temporarily shorten in low-temperature conditions.
Store iPod in a place where the temperature is always between -20º and 45º C
(-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave iPod in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can
exceed this range."
The difference between your iPod and your friend's may be that the hard disc in your iPod may have some slight damage that affects it more in the cold.

  • How do I keep my iPod from Freezing while listening to audiobooks?

I've been listening to audiobooks from audible.com for years... withing the last few months I've had a problem with some downloaded books only playing a few minutes (3 - 15) when my iPod freezes and I have to reset. If I try to continue the audiobook -- the same thing happens in the same place.  Other audiobooks play fine -- no troubles.  Has anyone else had this problem?  If so, have you found a reason and/or a fix?
Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Do the iPod Disk Diagnostic, as posted by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but help in troubleshooting.

  • Ipod touch question. Any way to keep my ipod from populating my album list with stuff I bought on itunes even if I don't manually put them on my ipod.

I have my ipod set to sync manually and even when I completely reboot my ipod it always puts on my albums list 20 or so albums I bought on itunes years ago that I don't want on there. It doesn't download them so they won't play unless I click to download them but it's annoying scrolling through your music and having stuff on there you don't listen to and can't get rid of.

Like I said I have my ipod set to sync manually and even with that setting it is still showing some "itunes purchased" albums on my ipod album list. They are not synced though because when you go to play them it shows them as not downloaded.

  • My computer crashed. So does this mean I can not add any more music to my ipod from a different computer without all the songs being erased? Can I sync my ipod to a new computer if I allow all the songs to be erased?

My computer crashed. So does this mean I can not add any more music to my ipod from a different computer without all the songs being erased? The ipod works fine and now i got a new computer. So it seems like my only options are leaving my ipod in a state where i cant add anymore songs or erasing all my songs and trying to use my ipod from my new computer. Can someone please inform me on how to have my ipod work from a different computer, even if i have to erase my songs. Thanks.

Yes, if you choose the Erase and Sync option (or restore your iPod) you will be allowed to sync your iPod with the new computer.

Have you tried clearing DW's program cache yet? That's usually my first step if something "just started happening"...
    Deleting a corrupted cache file
Server updates can cause DW to need a setting change. Have you already tried toggling Use Passive FTP in your site settings yet?
Has anything changed on your local network, like an update to a firewall?
If you are connected via wireless router, a low likelihood but possible thing to test would be a wireless router problem. Try connecting the computer directly to your modem, bypassing the wireless router (if you aren't using an all in one modem/router setup) to see if that makes any difference.

  • My 5 year old iPod classic will not play on my Yamaha CRX-332 cd receiver but my 3 year old iPhone 3g will.  Any suggestions to get my iPod to read the receiver or get the receiver to read the iPod?

My 5 year old iPod classic will not play on my Yamaha CRX-332 cd receiver but my 3 year old iPhone 3g will.  Any suggestions to get my iPod to read the receiver or get the receiver to read the iPod?  The receiver should be able to play the iPod with a USB connection or with the iPod dock.  Neither works with my iPod however both work with my iPhone 3g.  The iPod has the latest software.  Any thoughts?

If it is a 5-year old iPod, there is the possibility that the receiver simply won't work with the older software (there hasn't been an iPod Classic software update in years). You might try contacting Yamaha support (or doing a google search) to see if it is a known issue. One solution (probably the easiest) is to get a cable that connects a min jack (i.e., a headphone jack) to stereo cables, and just connect the iPod up that way. You eliminate the risk of corrupting the iPod, and it is a solution that should always work. Just use a wall charger to power the iPod.

  • Any suggestions for keeping the magic trackpad from sliding around?

When I push up with two fingers, the 'pad moves.  I usually just put an iPod touch in back of it (iPod has a rubber case, prevents sliding).  But a more practile solutions would be best (don't always have iPod around)
I wish the little rubber pieces on the bottom of the trackpad were more grippy...

I always thought those pads were "grippy".  What kind of surface do you have it on?
Here's one suggestion though.  Get a thin piece of vinyl sheet a little larger than the trackpad.  That stuff sticks to most any smooth surface and will definitely grip the trackpad.  I know this because I use this stuff.  But almost anything equivalent will do.
Note, I use not to keep the trackpad from slipping, but to keep it from scratching my acrylic desktop (also bought from the same place as the vinyl).

  • Can't copy any more songs to my ipod from itunes - says its full but i have deleted heaps off my ipod to make room!

I can not seem to add any more songs to my ipod. Normally i just click and drag songs i have highlighted in my itunes folders up to the Administrators' ipod and it puts a copy there in my ipod. however i keep getting a message saying there is not enough room  . . . and so can't add another song. I have deleted heaps of songs off my ipod to ensure sufficient room for these new songs i want to load but i keep failing - why would that be? Is the space not freeing up when i delete exiting music off my ipod for some reason - or any other reason?

Try rebooting your iPod with it still connected to iTunes.  To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
How exactly are you deleting this tracks from the iPod?

  • Any way to keep audiobooks separate from eBooks?

I have an extensive collection of ebooks (formerly in LIT form) that I've been collecting over the years. I also have more than 40 audiobooks from audible. Any way to keep these separate in iTunes? Some are books with the same name (an audio and text version of the same book) and sorting/searching is getting cumbersome.
In particular, sometimes I want to sync a certain audiobook to an iPod (a nano, so syncing the whole collection isn't appropriate), wihle I want to maintain and organize my ebooks on my iPad. Now that they're both in the place in iTunes, it's incredibly annoying.

Start by creating a few Smart Playlists, based on the Media Kind of the entry, like in this screenshot:
At the least you'll create two, one for Audiobooks and one for Books. This will let you look at one or the other in iTunes. You may have others you'd like to create, based on genre, tags you put in the Comments field, etc.
For your device-specific sync settings, iTunes already has separate controls for sync'ing books vs. audiobooks. You shouldn't have any difficulty keeping them separate, but if you do, here again you might find Smart or normal Playlists to be useful. Sync against a playlist, instead of using the Sync All option.

  • Any suggestions for a cracked ipod touch screen

Any suggestions on what to do for a cracked ipod touch screen ? Replacement screen is $75.

Apple doesn't repair it.  If there is no sign of abuse, they replace it with a refurbished unit.  The fixed-price for non-warranty replacements can be found here.

  • TS2771 What to do to stop ipod from freezing up?

What to do if your ipod constantly freezes?

    OK I'm serious now, really..
If memory serves the iPod Classic has a mechanical hard drive.  With that being the case, your hard drive may be getting ready to crash, so it might be time to either retire it, or replace the drive.
I'd done that to a 30gig iPod, and it was pretty easy.  The drive cost me about $30.00 and it took me about an hour start to finish....
There is a set of diagnostic routines "hidden" in the firm ware.  Google is your friend...  You may want to do a backup and then use iTunes to Enable Disk Use and then use normal hard drive utilities to test the drive....
