Any tips on using hacked AVCHD files from Lumix GH-1?

Presently I have used VoltaicHD to convert the resulting files shot at either FHD or SD using the hacked bitrate settings  before using them in Premier Pro CS4. Is this necessary? Does anyone here have experience of using the hacked footage in Premier that can give any tips.

Text rendered from photoshop gets sent to a RIP (raster image processor) at the resolution you set (usually 300 dpi). Text from a page layout program gets rendered at the output resolution of the RIP which varies but is usually at least 2400 dpi. No prepress/ pressman combination is going to fix that, and they ignore it these days because people are used to bad text. You don't need to upgrade to fix the problem, but you do need to stop using Photohop to set text. Pagemaker is still quite capable of outputting vector text. The added benefit is on your online versions where vector text results in much clearer pdf files and smaller file sizes.
I save my employer tons of money by upgrading when it's smart. A magazine which used to take a week in the pagemaker days can take as little as a day and a half. I have plenty of projects that pagemaker just could not handle.

  • Does FCP7 directly imports AVCHD files from sony cam?

Does the new FCP 7.0 directly imports AVCHD files from sony cam?
Does it need any conversion? If yes, how is the conversion time, and does the conversion degrades image quality?
    Thanks in advance.

Which sony camera? there are a lot.
Yes, it needs to convert. AVCHD isn't a format that most editing systems deal with natively. You will be converting it to ProRes. The conversion time is dependent on too many factors to give a precise number. Based on computer used, processors, RAM, how much footage, where it will be stored...all of that. The conversion doesn't degrade the image.

  • Any tips for using the battery ? T500

Are there any tips to use the battery for a long time ?
I've seen the posts somewhere that "conditioning" is not needed for this battery, Li-on based ?
Is recharging when the battery is half-charged a bad habit ?
    Thanks

    Hello shong9,
First you should load your battery 36h, then unload it normally, till it will go to sleep or hibernate
(depends on setting in power manager).
Second load it 24, then unload it normally till it went to sleep or hibernate.
Third and last, load it 12h, then unload it normally till it went to sleep or hibernate.
Then you battery has got it´s full capacity and the powermanger will do all for you, to keep it healthy.
You should leave the battery in your machine, if using AC.
When you are working mobile, then charge it, when it´s necessary.
    That´s it.

  • How can I use mp4 audio files from my iTunes library in an Elements 10 slide show?

How can I use mp4 audio files from my iTunes library in an Elements 10 slide show?

AAC is Advanced Audio Coding.  Basically it's a format that sounds better than MP3 but doesn't take up as much space as a lossless format (like you'd have on a CD).  More than likely you've had that encoding turned on when you ripped your music into itunes (it's the default encoder).  Therefore your LG phone won't play them.
You need to turn off the AAC format by going to the iTunes menu, Preferences, General (at the top), then clicking the "Import Preferences" button.  Change the AAC Encoder to MP3 Encoder.  After that you'll have to make MP3 copies of your songs by right clicking them and selecting "Create MP3 Version."  You'll get a copy of the song that should transfer to your SD card and have MP3 encoding.  Hopefully your phone will play that.

avchd movies from lumix FZ100 not recognized by imovie

iMovie does not edit MPEG2 natively. However, iMovie will import directly from a supported camera. During the import, the footage will be converted from MPEG2 to Apple Intermediate Codec.
If you hook up your camera, it should import just fine.
For existing footage that you have stored on your hard drive, there are a couple of options.
    1) The MPEG Streamclip option. With MPEG Streamclip (free) (and the MPEG2 Playback component which you already have) you can convert the MPEG2 to a iMovie compatible format like DV or AIC or h.264.
    2) You might be able to "fake out" iMovie into thinking that your hard drive footage is really on a camera. To do this, you will need to create a disk image of your camera, and move the footage back to the disk image. Alternatively, you could drag the footage back to your camera and import from there. Perhaps someone who has your camera can give detailed instructions for this. The disk image must have the identical file structure that your camera does. (This is how imovie knows it is a camera.)
Disk images can be created by Disk Utility, which comes with your Mac. It is found in the Applications/Utilities folder, and is also handy if you ever need to format a drive.

How can I  process raw files from lumix GH4 on photoshop elements 12?

Your files should open in photoshop elements 12, since there is only one version of camera raw 8.5
(RC means a release candidate of 8.5, which came before the final version of camera raw 8.5 and was for testing)
In the pse 12 editor if you go to File>Open and select one of the lumix GH4 and then press Open, what happens?
In the pse 12 editor, if you go to Photoshop Elements>About Plug-in and click on the words Camera Raw, what version does it say?

  • AVCHD files from Canon HF M50

I know the topic of AVCHD has been discussed in a number of posts, but I have a more specific question concerning the AVCHD files coming from my camera. The camera has three "frame rate" settings - 60i, PF30, PF24. The PF30 and PF24 settings are contained in a 60i stream and FCPX identifies these as interlaced material. I realize that the PF30 setting is technically interlaced since the progressive frames are actually simultaneous interlaced fields, but since most of my material is for web distribution I'd prefer working with progressive material rather than deinterlacing somewhere in my workflow. I know about the fix of changing the field dominance of the clips in the inspector, but when I transcode/optimize the media via FCPX the ProRes files created are interlaced.
I also have Compressor and went through the "trouble" of creating some presets for the different frame rates, but doing so left me with a question. In the encoder specifications, ProRes has a checkbox if the files are interlaced indicating a difference in how interlaced and progressive are encoded (naturally). My original idea was to change the field dominance of the PF30 files to progressive in the clip inspector of Compressor so they are treated as and output as progressive. But the interlaced checkbox and the actions of FCPX has left me wondering what the ideal workflow would be when creating ProRes files for material shot in the PF30 setting. Would it be better to create interlaced ProRes files and then use the field dominance override in FCPX or encode progressive via compressor (seeing as the progressive material is in an interlaced stream)?
The worst part about all this is that when I was testing different workflows, Aperture recognized the different frame rates correctly. I considered the roundabout method of importing with Aperture and using these files in FCPX, but I lose some of the metadata of the files which is a pain.
I apologize for the length and the fact that I'm not so much asking for help as I am asking for a recommendation. Any feedback is appreciated.

I suppose I could use proxy since native editing keeps crashing the program when adjusting effects.

  • How can I import AVCHD files from my hard drive?

    - How can I work with .mts files from my Sony camera that I dragged from the camera to a folder on my computer. If I understand it well, if I import the files with a Log and Transfer, they will be converted to another format.
    - do they lose quality with the Log and Transfer conversion?
I want to erase my sony camera hard disk but do not want to lose the original files, that is why I ask.

    Hi -
In order to use the files from your camera easily (without 3rd party software) you need to not only drag the mts files, but the ENTIRE DIRECTORY STRUCTURE of the camera storage to your hard disk drive. Many people find it most convenient to use Disk Utility to make a disk image of the camera storage media, and keep the disk image on their hard disk, available for re-use at any time.
The additional folders that are present on the camera storage give necessary and valuable information to Final Cut as to how to "unpack" the extremely compressed video files. Without these files as guides and instructions, it becomes a much more difficult process.

  • Huge HD file sizes in iMovie when importing AVCHD files from HD Camcorder

Although several answers have been given on different ways to import HD files from a AVCHD camcorder, in this case a Sony one, the issue is what to do with the HUGE files it creates. I recorded 2 hours of HD content in about 30GB on the camcorder. I can burn those native HVCHD files on DVD's, took 6 of them, and play them on a Blue Ray player in HD. To edit, I tested a sample 50MB file that was about 3 minutes in length. It convered to quicktime file in the same 1920x1080 quality resulted in a file that was about 800MB, looked great, but how do I store or play a 20 minute version of it? iMovie is inadequate to do anything other than produce smaller size files for an iPod or lower quality, unless it is going to be a very short HD movie if doing true HD quality. One of the reasons I took the MAC plunge was the better multimedia capabilities. In this case, Apple (iMove and Final Cut) is behind.
I ended up shifting my HD editing back to a PC with $100 Sony Vegas software that can edit the AVCHD files and author in it. I can produce a DVD with about 25 minutes of edited HD in AVCDH file format and play it. I can also store the finished product in a much smaller space using AVCHD files. I have a 1 TB drive on my Mac that would be consumed if I worked in iMovie with converting all these AVCDH files and kept them in HD quality since it looks like it needs to expand them 12-16 times the AVCHD file size.
Yes, I know I could lower the quality to better work with them in iMovie, but that makes no sense to me. I want to record and edit in the HD format. Seems like these AVCHD cameras are becoming a standard since they are so efficient at storing HD content, iMovie needs to figure out how to edit and store them the same way. Very disappointed in how iMovie handles HD, to me it is NOT very good at handling HD, no good way to store or distribute it.
Am I missing soomething here? I have spent hours looking for a different answer, but have not found one yet? Maybe the next version of iMovie will be better. I like using it for SD DVD authoring, but for HD, did not work at all for me.
    Jon

Interesting you say it is not meant for editing, but there are about a half dozen editor's for windows that will work on these exact files. I know with Sony Vegas that I have the same level of control with frame precision as I do with iMovie so I think there must be more to the story why Apple has not been able to support it like other software manufacturers who support windows. Don't get me wrong, i would love to do the work in iMovie and not have to learn something new. I don't have the storage space to use the HD apple format, that 2 hr of HD in AVCHD would turn into about 500GB then what do I put it on to play it. If the BlueRay standard calls for 25 or 50G disc's and we can get full two hour movies on them today, then they must be using a file format similar to AVCHD to fit on a disc, they cannot be using anything close to what Apple uses for HD files, it is just simple logic and math. So why doesn't Apple finure it out before everyone who starts working in HD comes to the same conclusion that the Apple QT file formats for HD is going to be an issue with space, you can create content, but cannot afford the disc space to store it or play it.

  • Adobe Premier Elements 12 - Exporting trimmed AVCHD files from the project timeline, to a separate folder for burning to Blu Ray disc with other software?

Hi, can anyone help please.  This is the first time I have used this forum.
I use Premier Elements 12, a PC, 64 Bit, Windows 7, high powered computer.
Just started trimming AVCHD in this software.
I would like to know if it is possible to export trimmed AVCHD files to a folder elsewhere (files which were originally imported into the project timeline), so that I can burn the trimmed AVCHD files (not in 'Project' form)  to Blu Ray disc (using another software which I know that works to burn video files to Blu Ray disc).

Thanks for the update. Your progress sounds very good.
Premiere Elements 11, 12, and 13 are similar. But, version 13 has significant feature removals and a new Elements Organizer.
So, when viewing or reading tutorials, try to determine the version of the program being used for the tutorials. As I typically write
principles tend to remain the same from version to version, but the features tend to move, change, or be discontinued from version
to version. And, it is frustrating to be armed with principles when you cannot find a feature.

  • Hello there. Any tips for an affordable AVCHD camcorder for Final Cut Pro X?

    Hello there.
I am enthusiast for the new Final Cut Pro X.
I am now starting to learn with iMovie '11 and I would like to buy a AVCHD camcorder. It should be affordable and compatible with iMovie '11 and Final Cut Pro X. Any tips? I live in Italy.
    Thank you in advance.
    Gianluca

I use an SDT 750 and an AC 90, both Pansonic cams, both are set to shoot 1920 x 1080 50P.
FCP X works just fine with this footage as does interlaced.
If you Mac is fast enough you won't need to transcode to Prores/Optimise for simple Projects it works directly with imported media.

  • FCPX not reading AVCHD files from DVD

    Hello to all,
I had made AVCHD disks of my Sony handy cam's footage using PMB [picture motion browser]. But when I tried to import these files from the DVD, FCPX would not accept these MTS files. Is not FCPX meant to deal with AVCHD?

Thanks for the info. The site you referred to has this:
'a user can burn 1080p60 video to Blu-ray or DVD after converting to 1080i'
I remember  PMB allowed users the choice of making AVCHD disks or [?] MPEG2 disks. I have just now inserted the disk I had burnt and got this info:
Next I opened the disk and got this info from one of the MTS files:
The description of the file states it to be: AVCHD MTS
So why is it that FCPX is not able to ingest this AVCHD MTS file?
