Any tips to mak your MAC run smoother?

hi all, just wanted to know any tips on how to make your mac run smoother. Your help is much appreciated

I agree with Macjack, if it ain't broke... but there you can do maintenance that can help keep a Mac happy:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/performance.html <--- Tuning Mac OS X Performance
7 top utilities for a Mac: <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://mac360.com/index.php/mac360/comments/thetop_7_free_utilities_to_maintain_amac/
Avoid a cluttered Desktop: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7668937#7668937
Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions before and after any software installation. Keep an eye on your free drive space. Control click your MacHD icon on your Desktop. Click: Get Info Under the General category you will see: Capacity and Available. Make certain your free drive space never falls below 15%... (some day 10%).
Hope this helps... and Happy Holidays!

  • Any tips to make World of Warcraft go most smoothly?

    I found a trial of World of Warcraft at ( http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ )
And when I look at the System Requirements, does seem that my white MacBook will run the game with no problems? I'm not sure about my video card tho? You tell me.
It says you need at least 32MB ATI or NVIDIA.
But please share any tips to make World of Warcraft frame frate go as painless as possible.
I think I have try'd it before, World of Warcraft on a Mac and it was not pretty even with low settings.
But since they publish trial on the Apple site I thought, what the heck - might be different this time?
    Tips!? I need, thank you.
    Thank you, thank you.

You don't have either of those graphics cards - you have shared 64MB of video memory, this isn't a proper dedicated graphics card. Some games will work better than others but the MacBook isn't really designed to be a games machiine. Still, I hope you get some better performance out of it. Increasing the amount of RAM will nearly always help general system performance.

  • Keeping your iPhone Running Smooth?

    Cycle your battery?
    Leave memory space?
Clear your Cache, cookies, and history?
    Reset (home + Sleep buttons)?
Do these practices work to help keeping your iPhone running smooth?
What are your experiences and what do you do to help keep it healthy?

Yes, it means to let the battery discharge all the way until the phone shuts itself off, then charge the battery completely. Apple recommends doing this once a month.
    From http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html :
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month.

  • Any Tips on Keeping a MacPro running fast?

    I have a Mac Pro Quad-Core (2.26 GHz) with 16 GB RAM - Running OS X 10.8.3 - 3 Hard Drives (Main Drive 640 GB and 2 1TB)
Over the past few months I have noticed that it is getting extreamly sluggish yet other than OS X updates nothing has really changed.  It seems like launching programs is taking longer, system stalls at least once a week (usually while running FCP etc).
I have repaired disk permissions...any ideas.
    Thanks!

  • How to help mac run smoother

I have had my MacBrook Pro for about 3 years, and it is starting to slow down. It takes some time for each page to load if I am using more than 2 or 3. Do I need to clean my mac and what product should I use, or would there be another issue?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Any tips on making slow motion clips "smoother" (interpolation)?

I was not able to find this in the documentation.
I need to render a sequence with a clip that is at 40% speed (slow motion), this clip is of a time lapse weather (clouds) video.
I would like to know what type of interpolation Final Cut Pro uses (if any) and if there are any methods to improve the fludity of clips that are set to slow motion. Right now the section of the rendered video where the slow motion clip is (the clouds) appear a bit "jumpy' and I would like to have them a bit "smoother".

Thanks, I've tried a couple from everyone's suggestions; from frame blend, to motion blur, and to the optical flow (in Motion).
The problem is that with cloud time lapse video in slow motion there is still some level of "jumpyness" from one frame (one time lapse frame, not frame in the video file) to the other.
With optical flow, it is quite nice, but it makes it move incredibly smooth from one frame, but then pauses, and then incredibly smooth to the next, so it's not really usable for cloud time lapse video.
I'm still hoping for some kind of better interpolation effect that I haven't found yet.

  • Delphi has given up after Version 4.x. What now? They don't support your product so now we can't either. Any plans to make your web server a little nicer?

Um. I'm not sure I understand your question. It really sounds like your question should be addressed towards Borland's support team.
I haven't worked with Delphi since 1997, but I'll make a couple of observations:
It looks like Delphi's WebSnap interfaces with iWS via NSAPI. And the NSAPI in iWS 6.x is backwards compatible. So even if Borland doesn't officially support iWS 6.x it should still work fine.
If Borland is going to continue producing Delphi they will probably certify iWS 6.x soon. iWS 4.x support ends this fall and iWS still has the majority of the marketshare for the F500. Not certifying an enterprise product against iWS 6.x (especially a product that should already work unchanged) would seem to be a bad idea on Borland's part.
As far as planned improvements to iWS, of course there are planned improvements. But that doesn't seem to be the issue here. There are already lots of improvements that you would get if you upgrade from 4.x to 6.x. It's just that you are unable to take advantage of because of the Delphi tool. Another iWS release would only make your problem worse.
As far as "what now?", I'd suggest badgering Borland to support iWS 6.x. iPlanet has made it as easy as possible for ISV's. It just sounds like they have to train their support desk on iWS 6. And the only way to motivate them to do that is to have customers call them.

  • Does anybody have any tips to make iMessages run smoother?

I have an iMac and the iPhone 4. I have recently upgraded to mountain Lion and as such recieved messages a great feature in my opinion. However it's a bit fiddly. Some examples of things I would like help with:
1: I can only recieve imessages on my mac from people I have messaged from the mac. So if I start a conversation with someone on the mac, I speak to them on the mac but if somebody imessages me it will only to my phone, if I then open a conversation with them on the mac app all thier future messages will go to both my mac and my phone.
    2. If I start a conversation on my mac then switch my mac off and continue the conversation on my phone when I turn my mac back on I get a load of notifications for all the messages I have already read on my phone.
    3. Is there a way to get all the people who are in my contact list that have iMessage facilities into a buddie list?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Any links to good articles and videos on the subject would be great.

Yeah I have done that already thank you. I can get messages from my mac on my phone. But say I was having a conversation on my phone in work with someone and then came home to my mac and opened messages it would not be on my mac unless I had previously spoken with somebody on the mac before.
If I had spoken on the mac with the person before then I will get a notification for every message they sent me while on my phone.
    Make sense?

  • Is there any way to make a Mac identify as a Windows machine on a local network?

I work for a municipal government organization. Occasionally, I am blocked by the network spam/firewall software (Barracuda) from accessing websites from my Mac, but NOT blocked from them if I go from a Windows machine -- even if it's a Windows VM running on the Mac! The reason given is usually because the sites are identified as "shopping".)
My suspicion is that, since AFAIK I am on the only Mac on the city's network that is NOT in one of the school department's computer labs, that there is a setting on the server side that is set to assume that any Mac is a classroom machine and that the user is a minor. (***PLEASE NOTE*** Before anyone says anything, he sites in question tend to be free font or free graphics sites and ARE actually work-related, since I have no budget for fonts or stock photos... Keep it clean, you! <gr>)
I know that there are ways to spoof a browser, say, on the web, but is there any way to do this directly on a local network? More to the point, if it IS possible, is there a way for ME to do it from my end rather than putting in a request to the MIS **** Desk to do something at THEIR end?

Try this, UneasySilence.com has a guide on how to use SheepShaver to run Mac OS 9 on an Intel Mac.

It is completely possible with a little bit of tinkering, and a really cool universal application called Sheep Shaver, which came to us via a tip from Kazaki. Sheep Shaver is a full speed 'Classic' emulator for Windows, Linux, and Intel based Macs, that runs older MacOS's at shockingly full speed!"

  • How to make AVCHD 1080i run smoothly in PE 12, I'm using a Canon HG10

Hi I'm a nwbie on here and not sure how things work.
I have a Canon HG10  AVCHD ,video camera and when I load it into PE12 it is really jerky, I'm downloading as 1080i if that helps, the program is rendering it as it uploads it, but still plays jerky, if I play the video through my media player on the same computer it plays lovely and smooth.
    Any help would be appreiciated.
    Dave

Your computer is a bit underpowered for AVCHD editing. But, if your project is being set up properly by Premiere Elements (which it is, if you're not seeing a yellow line along the top of the timeline in Expert view), you should be able to do basic editing.
Most likely you've got something in the background interferring with your playback. This could be antivirus software, your firewall or Windows Indexing -- or possibly some background program or even malware.
What antivirus program are you using? Norton antivirus is notorious for dragging systems down.
If you open your Task Manager with no other programs open on your computer, how many background processes does it list as running?
Have you manually gone to Windows Update and ensured you have all of the Windows AND Microsoft Updates, including those that do not install automatically? When did you last run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter?
