Any tricks to swapping out my old time capsule with a new airport extreme I am also using airport expresses?  The hard drive on the TC quit working.

I do plan on using an external USB HDD for time machine backups.  I have both 802.11g and 802.11n used for playing music via stereos.
I would recommend against it. Apple does not support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks (USB HDD attached to the AirPort Extreme). Although folks have done so, we get a number of them here asking for help with their corrupted backups. If your backups are critical to you, please use another means (like connecting the USB HDD directly to your Mac) to do so.

  • Best way to Replace OLD Time Capsule with a new one

What is the best way to replace an old Time capsule with a new Time Capsule in an existing wireless network?

    IMHO..
    Start over..
Put the new TC in place and configure .. completely differently to the old one. That means you have to go around and reset everything to connect if you use wireless.. and you should forget all the old configuration beforehand.
You can of course try and slip it in using identical names and identical settings.. but the computers are not fooled.. the BSSID is different. And other issues tend to arise.
Use naming that is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    See Pondini post C9 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
It may take more time to start with.. depending on how many devices you have.. but in the end, you can get much less problems out the other side.. which are extraordinarily hard to diagnose and fix..
But that is IMHO.. others are welcome to dispute that and may find a full swap using old settings copied to a file and copied back to the new TC work fine.
There are any number of posts around about doing just that.
I will post one if I see it..
I do confess to being a bit of a purist when it comes to this stuff.. but then I used to do computer support and trying to fix the messes people got themselves into .. inevitably they tried to cut corners.. instead of doing the setup from scratch.

  • Replacing an old Time Capsule with a new Airport Extreme.

Seems to be connected, light green.  iPhone recognizes wireless network.  But when signing on, after password entered, spins and does not connect?  Any ideas?

  • Help with Time Capsule with a new modem

    Hi,
I did a search and couldn't find what I'm looking for.  What is the  easiest way to setup my Time capsule with a new modem?  I will be using  wifi with the time capsule.  I just got a new modem and the time capsule  keeps flashing a amber light.  It was working off wifi before I got the  new modem.
    Thanks, Jerry

There is only one right value for wireless now. Which I did list in the instructions.
    WPA2-PSK (AES) for the arris.
    WPA2-Personal for the TC.
Did you reboot everything when you disconnected the ethernet.. so the computer and TC can reallocate the IP addresses. This is important.
Reboot everything when you rearrange networks.. always do it.. even I am forced to do it.
Reboot in this order.. from off.. everything off.
    Modem.. wait 2min
    TC.. wait 2min
Computer.. this will now pick up a new IP from the whichever wireless is stronger.. should not make any difference if it is the TC or the Arris.
Now see if the TC is available in airport utility.
If it fails .. reconnect it by ethernet to the computer.
Give it a different wireless name .. ie the Arris and the TC will have different names.
And you are using "create a wireless network" in the TC.. no other option will work.
Update the TC so the setup is saved.
Unplug the TC from the computer and plug it into the Arris..
Now reboot everything.. sorry.. but it is the easiest way to clear up old settings and get everything going again.
Now in the computer you will need to open the airport and find the TC wireless.. and then you connect to it.
Once you connect direct to the TC you should have no trouble.
You can setup and fix any issues.. there are always a few silly things.. password default or wan setup .. choose ignore or change settings.

  • How can I see the old backups of my previous Macbook done by Time machine in a Time capsule with my new iMac?

How can I see the old backups of my previous Macbook done by Time machine in a Time capsule with my new iMac? I've changed from a Macbook to a iMac because that one stopped working and I cannot use it anymore. I've been able to import all the data of the last backup of the Macbook when setting the new iMac, but I cannot access now to the old backups of the Macbook and there are information that wasn't in the last backup and I would like to recover. Thank you very much.

    Yes, you can ..

  • How do I transfer info from my old time capsule to a new one

How do I transfer all data from my old time capsule to a new? (latest model)

Are you talking about TM backups??
I would consider carefully if it is not better to start over.. TM becomes more problematic as the backups increase in age.. you can archive off the backups from the old TC if you need to store them.
    Transfer TM backups..
    Apple doco. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5097
    Pondini doco http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
For data .. copy and paste.. but make sure you turn off wireless and use ethernet as it must copy files via the computer.. by wireless this is dead slow.

  • How do I transfer back up data from my old time capsule to my new one easily.

How do I transfer back up data from my old time capsule to my new one easily.

Before you do this, do you really need all of the old backups that go back many weeks and months?  Most us only ever need to go back a week or two to pick up a file that was accidentally deleted, but that's about it.
Sure, It is tough to think about deleting all the old backups, so a suggestion would be to keep the old Time Capsule around for a month or two....just in case....but start new backups on the new Time Capsule.  Once you have a month or two of backup history on the new Time Capsule, then you might decide to erase the old Time Capsule and sell it....or just keep it around as a spare hard drive.
I've tranferred backups a few times in the past, and used up a lot of space on the "new" Time Capsule to do it, and have found that it is far more trouble than it is worth.
    But, you may disagree.

I want to replace a four year old Time Capsule for a new Airport Extreme, how difficult is it? The ADSL connection come from a Modern Router provide by the local Telephone company.

Reply back when you get the new device, but in short, you'll have to put your extreme in bridge mode and just connect the same wires as your current TC.

  • How do you replace a time capsule with a newer one

How do you replace a time capsule with a newer one?

LOL.. pull the old one out.. put the new one in. Setup the new one.. do not copy setting from the old one.. it is better to start over and never copy configuration files.. although you might get away with it.
Plug the old TC into the new one.. change it to bridge mode.
You can then access and copy old backups to the new TC if you want. Although IMHO just keep the old TC for 6months. .then wipe it and sell it or use in different role. Do start clean fresh backups on the new TC.
If that is all useless. ask the specific question and we can try for a specific answer.

  • Migrating from old time capsule to a new one

I have a new Time Capsule (4th gen, 2TB) that I want to replace my old Time Capsule (3rd gen, 2TB).
(The rationale is that I was splitting the original between time machine backups and shared home media but it had become full and performance was sluggish despite the auto-deletion of oldest backups.  Instead of getting a USB drive for the other media I decided to upgrade my main TC to the newest version but keep the 3rd Gen just for the media.)
What I'm looking for is a simple explanation for how to set up my new TC to replace my old one.  The manual isn't clear on this and I can't find a clear thread on the discussion that mirrors my situation.
My guess is that I need to follow these steps:
    - initialise the new TC as (just) an external HD to my Mac
    - deactivate time machine then copy the sparsebundles to the new TC
    - set up the new TC in network router mode
    - deactivate the network router mode on my old TC
    - swap the new TC for the old TC
    - reactivate time machine and point it towards the new network drive
My first question that I'd be grateful for answers to is: is the above correct or would you propose a different approach for any reason?
My second question is how do I then re-mount the old TC as a shared network drive
    - can it connect by wifi or do I need to connect it by ethernet or USB to the 'new' TC?
    - I assume I can simply delete the old sparsebundle files and repoint iTunes to access the media
Many thanks for your time in responding!

Alot of your steps depend on the first one which is wrong.. sorry.. you cannot use the TC as external HD.. it is now and forever a network drive.
That being the case.. let me suggest the following order.
    - deactivate TM.. yes that stops messy things happening.
    - setup the new TC to do all the functions of the existing one. The easiest way to do this is simply pull the old one out the network and install the new one.. otherwise you are trying to make two network connections to the two TC which will by default have the same IP. This will depend though on if you normally use ethernet. Do you?? I will suggest it another way if that is the case.
    - Factory reset the old TC.. and then set it in bridge mode and plug it into the new TC by ethernet.
    - Make sure all the network connections are full gigabit speed. If you are going to copy the old TM across this is going to take maybe a day or more.. assuming you have the 1TB drive full. TC cannot copy from one to the other direct.. it has to go.. TC1-Computer-TC2. which halves the speed.
Do you really need these old backups.. IMHO it is better.. much better.. to start a fresh TM backup. You can get a USB drive to offload the existing backups using the direct archive method.. although you will need the old 5.6 utility to do it.
    - Copying sparsebundles is not hard.. just time consuming. See Q18 with every combo of doing this.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    - Then you can erase the old TC and load your media on it.. remembering that the TC has no way to back itself up.. and TM cannot backup a network drive.. so if you store itunes library for instance on it.. and access it by wireless.. except that at some stage it will corrupt itself. Count on it. Make sure you have a backup.
    - reactivate TM if you did indeed move the old sparsebundle.. and point it to the right target disk.

  • How-to move time machine backup from an old Time Capsule to a new one?

As written on the title, I need to move my old backup from an old 500GB to a new dual-band 2TB Time capsule, but I have not found any hint.
I've found many suggestions how to move the backups between externa HD; from external HD to a Time Capsule; between Time Capsule and external HD.
    But nothing about my needs.
Someone can give me an how-to or at least some hint?
    Many thanks to every one!!!

I was able to do that by using the Finder to copy the "sparsebundle" files from the old Time Capsule to temporary storage, replacing the Time Capsule, then copying the "sparsebundle" files from the temporary storage area to the new Time Capsule. If your temporary storage is limited and you have more than one "sparsebundle" file to migrate, you can copy one at a time.
AirPort Utility also has an "Archive" function that you could use instead of a Finder copy.
I believe I saw recently a method of copying directly from one Time Capsule to another, although I can't find it at the moment. If that option makes sense for you, I'll look further.

  • Transferring Time Capsule Data from an old Time Capsule to a new one?

How do I transfer the data from my old 500GB time capsule to my new 2TB time capsule.  I just installed Lion as well.  I have the time capsules connected with the Ethernet cable.  I can see both of them in the finder.  When I open the Disk Utility I can only see the old time capsule so it is not possible to drag the new time capsule to the destination field in the restore tab.  Please help.  I would like to have my existing time machine backup on my new Time Capsule.
    Thank you in advance.
FYI Time Machine 101 is not any help.

See option 2 half way down this page.

  • How do I migrate multiple sparsebundles from my old time capsule to my new time capsule?

My old 1tb time capsule died on me last week. I bought a new 2tb model. I have put the old disk in an enclosure and I can access the data on it.
The old time capsule was used to backup three Mac's. How do I migrate the three sparebundles to the new time capsule? I want to keep all the backup histories.
I found lots of sites with tips but they all assume that the old TC was used to backup only one Mac.
I run Lion on my main Mac and all time machines were configured to backup via wireless.

    It worked. Kinda. I think.
I did the steps outlined in option 3. It took 2,5 days to do it (maybe because I had already switched to wireless).
Once the copy of the files was complete I actived time machine and selected the new time capsule as my backup. It said there was no backup history. But then it started backuping. Instead of the full disk (as I thought it would do, as it said there was no backup history) it only did about 35Gb. Which was what I had expected. I had just upgraded to Lion. After that backup it immediatly started again and did a backup of 40 Mb. (Why ???).
After that was done I started time machine and all the old backups were there (eg 2010) as a test I restored a file from Jan 2010. And it worked.
So now the other two sparsebundles to do.
@Jolly Giant: Thank you for the help and advice.

  • HT4522 How do I download from an old time capsule to a new one or to my computer?

I have a new 2T time capsule but have somehow lost all the old material I originally copied from my old time capsule. How can I go into the old capsule and re-copy all those files onto the new capsule?

Check the disk capacity left on the new 2TB, as the files are likely there.
Are the files TM backups? You handle those somewhat differently to regular files.
Check Q18 here for moving TM backups.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
Otherwise it is standard copying of files via finder.
I strongly recommend using ethernet.. turn off wireless. This is going to be a bit slow because the copy has to take place via the computer.. ie all packets are copied.. old TC--Computer.. Computer--new TC. As such it can take ages if you use wireless.
Bridge the old TC and plug it into the new one. Then you can mount the TC disk .. open a second finder window makes it easier to keep things open .. create a new directory in the new TC.. for old files .. do not just dump them under the root directory. And then copy away.
