Any way I can make my iPod Nano quieter?

The loudest I ever listen to my music at is at around 1/3 of the bar and that's when I'm somewhere noisy. When I've got it on at work I have it on the lowest volume setting, but it's slightly noiser there than I'd like it to be really...

That’s correct. I am familiar with the operation of the click wheel volume control.

Tried this and got to an ‘iPod Diagnostics’ menu, though I can’t seem to see an Audio option there.

I think I’m just using the original firmware that came pre-installed. While I normally like listening to music at decently loud volumes I've found I seem to get earache / ringing in my ears if I listen to earphones at anything but fairly quiet volumes. Don’t want to damage my hearing so that’s what I’ve got used to. Plus I’ve been allowed to have them on at work, so long as it doesn’t interfere with my work and it’s actually useful for me to be able to overhear background noise and conversation over the music.
Alternatively, is there any way I can alter the volume of the AAC files using iTunes or whatever so that they’re quieter before they get put on to the iPod?
