Any way (or script) to add a point-numbered footnote?

(This is a cross-post from the Mac forum ... really need help here ... AM)
A recent ID client who does heavy-duty legal publishing asked me this question, I didn't have an answer, but told her I'd post it here to see what the great minds have to say. (She wasn't sure she could explain it well enough.)
They used to use Word to publish their tomes, huge loose-leaf ring binders, and moved to ID recently. They're missing an important Word feature (which may force them to abandon ID for this pub! Ack!) of being able to insert a "special" footnote that doesn't force subsequent footnotes to increment up in number.
In other words, on a page with footnotes numberedd 15, 16, and 17, they need to be able to add a "15.1" footnote (and reference) after 15, leaving footnotes 16 and 17 etc. as is. Apparently this is a long-time practice in legal publishing. Word will continue to update all footnotes as necessary but skips the special ones, which need to be hand-updated. Not ideal, but workable.
As far as I know, there's no way to do this in ID, nor any plug-in that will do that. (You can do this with numbered lists ... convert one of the numbered grafs to text and set the next one to start at the right number ... but not with footnotes.)
Before you suggest that they fake it (hit a return after footnote 15 and manually enter/format a 15.1 footnote ... they've thought of that), the problem is what to do when the special footnote needs to be the first one in a list of footnotes, or the only one on a page.
I would love to find a solution for them ... hate to see users have to move from InDesign *back* to Word!
Edit: They're using InDesign CS4 but could use ID CS3 if necessary.

The question title says it all really. Is there any way of extending a polynomial trendline in Numbers '09, beyond the data that I currently have? I can do this in Excel, but would like to be able to do this in Numbers too.

Unfortunately there is no "forecast" feature for trendlines in Numbers. Wayne showed how to use the trendline equation from the chart to create additional data points for the chart. This is by far the simplest way to do it in Numbers but it has two drawbacks:
If your data changes, you'll need to manually readjust the coefficients for your forecasted point(s).
The precision of the coefficients is only three decimal places. The forecasted Y values using these coefficients might not be as accurate as you would like. For example, compare the forecasted Y value in Wayne's table at X=20 to the one in the table below.
You can avoid both problems by calculating the trendline coefficients in your table using the LINEST function. it is a little more work in the setup but it might save you time in the long run if your data changes a lot. Here is an example of for 2nd order polynomial:
The last "real" data point is in row 10.
Formula for column D =A
Formula for column E =A*A
F2 = the coefficient for X^2 =INDEX(LINEST(B2:B10,D2:E10),1)
G2 = the coefficient for X =INDEX(LINEST(B2:B10,D2:E10),2)
H2 = the constant =INDEX(LINEST(B2:B10,D2:E10),3)
Note: If you later need to add an additional data point at the end of your data, go to the last row of your data (in this example it is row 10) and "add row below". This way the formulas for the coefficients will adjust automatically to include the new row.

In Numbers 3.2, you can do lots of things with Page Headers and Footers in Print Preview. Move them to the (paper) edge - if your printer will handle that .
Then bring up the Fonts window (in Print Preview, Menu > Format > Fonts > Show Fonts) and have a play:
Or leave them blank. With zero position on the (paper) page, they will probably be in the non-printing margins anyway .

I'm dabbling in algorithmic music generation. As one would expect it's mostly MIDI based.
What I'd really like to do is to be able to alter other aspects of an audio project in an automated way - especially audio unit or similar plug-in parameters, as well as other track settings. By automated I mean, have a script that sets and changes the values, rather than having to set them in the Logic GUI or using a control surface.
Anyone know of any way to do this? Logic Pro 8 does not seem to have an AppleScript dictionary at all - that would be an ideal solution.

Any way of getting your current location in Numbers for iOS

I was looking for a way to get geographic location information from the iPad Core Location API from within Numbers and based on the iPad's location, a cell's value would change based on the location.
Does anyone know if Numbers supports location information or any way for numbers to ascertain the location of the iPad?

Our ad department has recently upgraded their windows PCs, and it seems the new default for Excel to save is .xlsb (excel binary workbook). Is there any way to open this in Numbers, or is my only answer to go over to them again and again, to get them to resave in .xls or .xlsx?

Ask them to resave as .xls
If they are polite enough, I'm quite sure that they may change their default format to .xls.

Is there any way to jump to a specific point in a long page?

I'm trying (and failing) to find a way to create a navigation bar at the top of a long page that will allow you to jump to certain sections of that long page. I've tried using relative navto:// links, and hyperlinking to text anchor points, but nothing I try seems to work. Can anybody help? Is this even possible?

In Smooth Scrolling articles, you can use decimals or percentages to jump to a specific position.
Example: navto://myarticle#3.3 (jumps to a specific position in smooth scrolling article that displays the bottom of page 4 and the top of page 5)
Example: navto://myarticle#50% (jumps to the middle of smooth scrolling article)

Java Doesn't exactly add floating-point numbers

I have a program in which I need to add 0.1 repeatedly to -1. In order to do this, even though I only need exactness to one decimal place, I have to use a float or double. Because floats and doubles are FP, they don't exactly add 0.1, so the values look something like -1.0, -0.9, -0.8, -0.700000000000001, -0.6000000000000000001....0.999999999999999. Besides using the Decimal text formatter (which didn't work for me) are there any other ways of doing this? Thanks

I don't disagree with you. But I had in mind what I dimly perceived to be the OPs question and his constraints as mentioned in his orig Q.
In general, I try to adhere to an OPs question when answering. For example, If a poster asks: "What's the best way to make bread from black beans?" I will try to tell him or her the best recipe I can locate on making bread from black beans, even though I think personally that it's not the best material for making bread. I might query the poster "Do you realize that it's generally better and easier to try to make bread from wheat flour?", but if it's got to be black beans then black beans it is.

How can I get my Recently Added back to how it was before I reset? Also, is there any way to sort a playlist by the numbering (i.e. 1, 2, 3)?

Basically, I reset my computer (not rebooted; reset, as in wiped it clean) and backed up all my music. After putting the songs back onto my iPhone, the playlists like My Top Rated and Recently Played were empty, of course. For Recently Added, all of my songs were in there. I imported my playlists and most were back to normal. However, the first 13 songs in my Recently Added were the same as before I reset my computer, which I found really odd, so I figured that they were sorted somehow for that to happen--they had to be. The rest of the songs were all of my other songs.
Anyways, I can't find a way to get my Recently Added to just have those 13 songs and it's really irritating me. Is there a way??? Yes, I've tried limiting to 13 items. I've also tried sorting by name, and the "most recently/least recently added" options didn't work either. How can I sort it by numbering, as in the actual numbers next to the Artist name???
Also, notice how the first 13 songs are sorted by Name and after those songs, the rest are sorted by Artist Name. So, I'm thinking this issue is fixable. It's peeving me!

A smart playlist like "Recently Added" is based on the date that a track is added to your library. Since you erased your computer and re-built your library from scratch, all your tracks are considered "recently added" because iTunes assigned a new date to each song as it was re-added to your library.
Instead of re-building your library from scratch, and re-importing certain playlists you had saved, it might've been better to have simply recovered your "iTunes Library.itl" file. That is the index that points to where all your song files are, and contains all your playlists, and has properties such as ratings, last played date, and date added. As long as the native files for your songs are in the same place, you could re-use your "iTunes Library.itl" file if you saved a copy before you erased your computer (always back that file up along with your native files, the .itl file IS your library).
As far as why the Recently Added playlist starts with 13 particular songs, then proceeds with the rest of all your songs in alphabetic order, it is possible that either you (or iTunes) started adding the songs back with the 13 most recent songs you had previously added to your library before it was erased, and once those were added then things proceeded by artist in alphabetical order. Not sure, but there's really nothing you can do about that other than replace your .itl file with the original version if you still have it somewhere.

Import-CSV script to add mobile phone numbers to existing Active Directory accounts

Hi guys, I'm a powershell beginner and trying to make a simple script to populate the mobile phone number field for a specified number of AD accounts that are currently blank.
I have a csv file mobilenumbers2.csv with two headers, "samaccountname,mobilenumber".     Underneath the headers I would have "jdoe,3333333333" and so on.
Here is the script I tried:

If you already have the header as the first line in your csv file, plrase drop the parameter -Header, please try the script below and feedback:

Is there any way to set up a system in Numbers where numbers from individual spreadsheet can get funneled into a Master Spreadsheet to calculate the total of all of the individual spreadsheets automatically?

I use Numbers for my business and I currently use it to create individual invoices and then (manually) enter the totals from the invoices into a Master Spreadsheet where I can see the sum of the individual totals. Is there anyway to set up a formula or a system that automatically funnels the numbers from the Individual Spreadsheets into the Master Spreadsheet to calculate a total?

If you can tolerate all the data and the summary being in a single document, this can be done. Any cell in a document can reference any other cell in the same document for the purpose of making a summary or other calculations.

Not on the iPad itself, no. iOS apps keep their documents within each app itself. You would need to save the documents to a WebDAV server. Dropbox can serve this function if partnered with DropDAV. See:

Is there a way to script "expand appearance"?

I have created a method to create line art roof shingles row-by-row. I think something like this is a good candidate for scripting, but I run into a dead-end quickly when trying to script this. Basically, I use "expand appearance" multiple times during the course of this process and I can't find any way to script that action. I have heard about using MenuIDs, but I can't find anything on how to discover what the MenuID for "expand appearance" is.
Anyhow, here is the tutorial. If anyone can give me some pointers on how to script this process, I would be very thankful.
I have also tried recording an action, but "expand appearance" doesn't get saved.

I used the recorder to record an action. The Expand Appearance step didn't record. I just now noticed you can add menu items to actions from the drop-down menu. Trying that. The next step is to add the tweak and roughen steps to the action.
