Any way to decrease file size of imported AVCHD clips?

Since I got my AVCHD camera I've pretty much eaten up all the space on my HD because of the way iMovie converts the files to a format that takes up like 15 times more space.
I do have some of my lesser-used footage on an external HD, but my Time Machine backup is also starting to get full and I need to find a solution for the clips that I don't want to erase, but don't need to store in the full HD format. Is there any way to compress or otherwise decrease the file size of an imported clip? I always import in the highest quality possible to evaluate, and then choose clips I only want to keep in a lower resolution.
Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Your AVCHD files are highly compressed. During import to iMovie they must be expanded to an editable format (AIC) which increases the file size.
The only way to "compress" these files is an export. An export from iMovie would "render" any effects, transitions or text making these items un-editable in the future. You could export your "raw" footage but this could also lead to problems in future imports.
Newer external drives could be partitioned for use with iMovie storage and your Time Machine files. You can also probably connect your current external giving you even more storage.

  • Any way to have file size included in the first search in finder?

Is it possible to somehow show file sizes when doing a search in finder?
On Panther, it was very helpful to have the file sizes listed. This immediately revealed whether the photoshop files I was looking for were full size or reduced.
But when I run a search in Snow Leopard it only shows name, kind and last opened. Otherwise I have to also add a second search to add in file size.
Any way to have file size included in the first search?
    Thanks!

Well, I wish I could take credit for knowing it was there before two days ago... but I dropped my laptop a couple months ago and it finally died for good on Friday, and I noticed this on the new laptop when setting up my Finder preferences.

  • Any way to change file size display to NOT use GB or MB notation?

I'd like to see exact byte counts for file sizes from time to time in the windows listing files (without having to Get Info). I've searched for options to change how file sizes are displayed by finder but have come up completely empty. Any chance this choice has not been completely co-opted from me by Apple's omnipotent designers?

    Welcome to Discussions.
I believe there are 3rd-party applications that do it, such as [WhatSize|http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize] and perhaps also [Path Finder|http://www.cocoatech.com].

Events are organised strictly on date and time, as read by iPhoto from the Exif data in the Photo. You cannot manually sort.
Create Albums. You can do much more organising with Albums, use Photos from different events, place them as you will. Best of all, Albums use no disk space at all. They simply reference the file on the Hard Disk. So a pic can be 1, 10 or 100 Albums with no wasted disk space whatever.

  • Maximum file size for importing into Premiere Pro CS6

    Hi,
I'm considering recording raw video, no compression at 720p, 30 fps for 20-30 min.  This woudl result in a file that is close to 80 Gbytes.  I'm wondering what the maximum file size for importing into premiere Pro is and if I need to split this file up into smaller pieces.  Any recommendations on how I may deal with uncompressed raw video that is pretty long in length?
    Thanks,
    Serena

There is bound to be some limit somewhere in the program, but you should be well below that. The biggest issue might be whether your computer is up to the task of handling it. If you will post your computer specs., someone will give you comments on that aspect.

  • Ways of reducing file size??

    Hello,
I have a 3D animation that is rendered to bmp frames.
I have inserted the animations into a Flash doc.
After editing, my final Flash movie/file is 20MB.
what are the best ways of reducing or compressing the file size down to a resonable "web-ready" level? Around 8MB or lower?
I want to avoid lowering the quality from 75%.
    Please advise, thanks!
    D_xyz

The primary way to reduce file size is to reduce the size of the imported content that the file is holding, meaning images and sound elements.  The ways to reduce the size of those things is to either optimize them before bringing them into the Flash file, or loading them dynamically so that they are not part of the published file's weight.
In your Flash Publish Settings you can select the option to "Generate Size Report"  HAving that report you can see the contributions of each piece to the overall file size, and in turn focus on them to try to bring the size of the file down.

  • How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

iDVD does not care about file sizes, as it compresses the file to the standard DVD format of mpeg2.
It only cares about length i.e. max 2 hours including titles etc.
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

    Hi,
In the Finder > View Menu > View Option > change the Text size.
This changes the size of text under the icons on the Desktop.
If you open any Finder window after this you can create a Default size for all windows from the same panel.

When I add a new bookmark, and the (star) Page Bookmarked window appears - is there any way to expand the size of that window so that I can see my entire list of folders when adding a new bookmark to an existing folder? The endless scrolling technique is far too tedious when trying to add a new bookmark, because the window is simply too tiny. Is there maybe a plug-in that will let me grab the corner of that window and re-size it? Thanks!

I suggest you install the "Add Bookmark to Here2" extension, then you can expand the the list but you will not see the bookmark itself in the list if that is what you wanted. At the top you have three major folders you can select one of them and scroll up and down. Below that you have your most recently used folders and you can select one of them instead and scroll up and down. You can see the folder the bookmark is in -- they get added to the bottom
If you really want to see the bookmark within the folder the same extension allows you to bring the bookmark to the folder from say the bookmarks sidebar that is why it is named as such. I use it but mainly i use the dialog.
Please continue reading about bookmarks and some related extensions at

If you are not using tags at all, you can remove a whole lot of confusion by removing them from the dialog via the extension.

  • How to import AVCHD clips from HD camcorder?

How I can import AVCHD clips from Sony HDR-TG1 with best possible quality to iMovie '09?
Camera records clips as 1080i format but when I import them to iMovie '09 quality are cr*p. I have a same problem with iMovie '08. This has something to do with interlacing and single field processing but is there any workaround (other than using PC)?

Preview playback may not be too good since QuickTime in general doesn't seem to deinterlace very well (when it deinterlaces at all).
Quality of exported footage varies greatly according to whether or not you select +just the right+ export settings. See this thread for details:

If exporting to SD (particularly, to iDVD), see here:

I'm planning to update this guide soonish with information on how to end up with 720p60 output from 1080i60 input (i.e. in effect treat the input as 1920x540 at 60 frames/sec progressive, turning it into 1280x720 at 60 frames/set progressive).

  • How do I import AVCHD clips from my hard-disk?

Has anybody been able to import AVCHD clips stored in a hard-disk? I save my clips onto my hard-disk after downloading from the media card from the camera however iMovie does not seem to recognize the folder structure.
    S.r.

Yes, this worked. Ideally it would be nice not to have to do that as I don't fully trust the disk image format as a final archive format and hence end up duplicating the media. I would prefer to leave it as ordinary folder structure (which works with FCP 6.0.1).
I suppose this could be a .1 release feature.
    Thanks,

  • Any maintenance work needed to decrease file size / speed up initialization

As we find that the initialization performance of the dashboard is not good, my teammate tried to cut down some data and formula in the Xcelsius file
She keep track on the file size and found that the file size is not decreased even she removed a lot of contents. I'm thinking if there is any tools or function for to re-index or recompile the XLF file?
Besides, any good tips to speed up initiation performance is highly appreciable!
Note: we are working very hard in reducing the using of sumif, countif, vlookup and hlookup already but these cannot be totally avoided based on our requirements~

    Hallo Allan,
As you already mentioned, the loading performance of the swf-file mainly depends on the amount of data included into the spreadsheet and the number and complexity of the excel-formulas you used.
Also the number of the components placed on the the dashboard has an influence on the performance.
To speed up the initialization the first approach would be to reduce the embedded data  and formulas.
This can be achieved through dynamically loading the data at runtime via a data connection.
Another approach is to split the dashboard into several XLF-/SWF-Files which are also dynamically loaded on demand at runtime.
This can be achieved via the slide-show or swf-loader component in Xcelsius.
The last, but not recommended, approach is to embedded the swf into a html-file and to do some calculations and navigation-logic in java-script via the external interface connection (EIC).

    Roman
