Any way to have time machine when every user is logged out?

Hello. I have a small server running os x.5 and a hard disk with Time machine attached to it. For security reasons, the best way to have it run is to have the machine run with no user logged in. Several people work on it at distance by uploading/downloading material (via SVN, SSH, and so on), but I do not want that the random passer by tinker with it (it's in a public place).
Now, I would like it to be regularly backed up, but I discovered that Time Machine does not work if there is no user logged in. This is a drag. Do you people have any trick I could use to keep TM working even when everybody is logged out (that is, when one can only see the login window)?
Best,
l.

  • Is there any way to force time machine to keep retrying after disk i/o error?

a little background to my problem:
i've had a hard drive problem previously, and i managed get all the data off of my mac by trying and retrying to access the same files and also from my working time machine backup. after zeroing out and reformatting my drive and doing a clean install of Mavericks i had everything back up running no problems.
recently, my macbook pro would be stuck and slow in recently imported iphoto pics so i figured my hard drive is really failing this time around
i try to get a time machine backup to save what i can, but after a couple of tries time machine would just stop backing up and in console i would see a disk i/o error.
is there any way to force time machine to keep trying to backup through the disk i/o error so i can save what i can before getting a new drive?
edit: a little more info, i know i have a harddrive error from looking at the console, but when i do a verify disk in disk utility it comes up clean and even after doing a disk repair it comes up clean i still see disk i/o errors in the console.

  • Is there any way to disable time machine based on network connection?

I would like to have time machine not run when I am on my wireless connection, but be enabled when connected via ethernet.
Is there any way to do this automatically?
    Thanks!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • Any way to configure time machine?

    Hello:
I have heard that there is a way to configure time machine so you can specify how often to back up the hard drive. Any thoughts?
I am not sure why Apple chose not to allow the user to specify the time interval. Right now, I have 150 GB on my hard drive and over 300 GB in backups.
    Thanks,

There is a third-party utility called TimeMachineScheduler - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Any way to force Time Machine to use existing backup after inheriting?

    Hi,
The hard drive in my iMac failed last week, and a replacement drive as well as a new logic board were installed.  I installed OS X onto the new drive and then used Setup Assistant to recover all data from my Time Machine backup.  Of course, once everything was back in place, Time Machine wouldn't recognize the backup as its own (per Pondini's site, this is because the logic board replacement makes Time Machine think it's a whole new computer).
To resolve this, I issued the Terminal command to inherit a backup, but this wasn't enough so I also issued the command to associate a backup with the computer.  This seemed to work, and I was able to kick off a new backup.  Time Machine did a complete scan and determined that it needed to back up everything on the computer as new.  Because there's not enough space on the Time Capsule, it then started deleting old backups, one after another, until I noticed what was going on and stopped it after a couple hours.
So my question is this: is there a way to get Time Machine to use the old backup data to do an incremental backup?  I'm not sure why it thinks it has to save everything; I could see it saving a copy of the OS, since that was installed from scratch, but all the user account data has been restored from backup so it should match what's in Time Machine.  If there's no way to do this then I guess I'll just delete the Time Machine archive and start over, but for versioning purposes it would be nice to have the old Time Machine archive data.
    Thanks!

    Thanks Linc.
What happened is I needed to retrieve something from Time Machine prior to starting a backup (the first backup after restoring everything).  However, Time Machine wouldn't connect to the Time Capsule, so that is why I used the tmutil commands.  Probably if I had instead started a backup then it would have asked me if I wanted to inherit.
Well, if there's no way to avoid a full copy then I guess I'll delete the archive and start over.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Any way to restore Time Machine deleted old backups?

    Hi,
I've just discovered that Time Machine has successfully deleted my very first backup and all my files tediously archived from 2002 has disappeared. TM has failed to warn me that my disc was full.
My only question is there any way at all i can recover these files? I have unfortunately dumped all my old cdrs.<proceed to wail uncontrollably>
    Help.

No. that would be totally absurd.
Absurd, perhaps, yet possibly true. From reading these boards, many people have never gotten that message, but the logs do show that old backups are being removed.
I was also being sarcastic but I suppose unless you know me, it does not show
No user is reasonably expected to monitor console for a message like that.
I agree but the facts show that very few have ever gotten this warning. Again, I was being sarcastic.
I did get a regular desktop popup warning me about this when my TM drive filled up. but as I understand this particular feature is quite buggy and many people don't get those popups.
If it is buggy as you note, then what I wrote is not so absurd after all, IMO.
TM is not quite ready for Prime Time. It is a useful tool, much like a hammer or tire wrench, but it is only a tool.

  • Is there any way to undo Time Machine formatting?

Within 20 minutes of becoming a proud iMac owner for the first time I think I have made a serious mistake
I have two external hard drives, a 1TB Seagate that I wanted to use as my Time Machine back-up drive, and a 500MB WD drive that I had various files on that i wanted to copy to my iMac.
I had both drives connected through USB and when I went through set-up I selected the Time Machine option for the Seagate drive.  I certainly don't recall my WD drive being mentioned at any point in the process, however when I look at the WD drive it now shows as 'Time Machine Backups', as does my Seagate drive, so it appears both drives were re-formatted.
Is there any way to undo this or will I need to look at data recovery software?

It sounds like you got this prompt:
And clicked Use as Backup Disk.  Then got this:

  • Time Machine not backing up during log out process

Situation: MacBook Pro, fully updated, running FileVault. When I log out, it should automatically back up my encrypted home folder to my Time Capsule. However, the large majority of times, no back up happens.
In the past, it has sporadically worked, usually after many tries. However, today, no matter what I do, I can't force it to backup my home folder. I've tried restarting, logging into another account and back into my account, and mounting the encrypted sparsebundle image immediately before log out, to no avail.
Is there a way to force it to backup at log out?

    mrpeters wrote:
Solved my own problem: Made a new account (an administrator...not sure if this was necesary or not) without FileVault enabled, and ran Time Machine from this new account. It backed up the encrypted home folder (all of it...sure hope that it starts just uploaded the "strips" or "stripes" or whatever they're called in the future.)
I don't think so -- I think that only applies to a "sparse" disk image, not the one used by FileVault. That's why TM is supposed to only back it up when you log out.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • IMac 20-inch on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, my photos from my iphoto library have been deleted. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine, help please.

I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
    Quit iPhoto.
    Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine.  (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?

    Hi Barry
Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.
As you can see here it is
and now its gone. I have no explanantion.
How do I go about moving this question as you suggested.
