Any way to re-index Artists in itunes

I have my music collection in folders on my PC in A-Z, then subfolders under "A" for all of my Artists that start with "A". Is there a way to clean this up in itunes so it doesn't show "All Artists" under the artists tab? I would like to have A, B, C, D, E, etc. and then be able to drill-down from there to artists under "A" for example.
Does anyone know if this is possible? When I import my "A" folder into itunes, it throws everything together on the browser.
Is there a program, 3rd party app, or something that I can use to accommodate this?
Any insight is appreciated...

The Artists and Albums are in alphabetical order in the Browser.
Click in the Artist window and press F to go to the first F artist and the same with the others.

Depends, if you've synced with this iTunes, while that passcode was enabled, you won't be prompted to enter the passcode when connecting your phone. If you have not synced, while that passcode was enabled, you will. So, if you fall in the later, there is no way to do what you want.

A database cannot in general use indexes in this way for an 'or' involving two different columns. However, for this specific example one can easily rewrite the query using 'UNION' to use the relevant indexes while still giving the same (correct) result:

Maybe you can apply a similar trick? If you know there is no possibility of duplicate rows then you can further optimise this (in terms of performance) by using UNION ALL.

I would like to free up all the space my iTunes Library takes up on my MacBook Pro, so I was considering purchasing an portable external hard drive to hold my iTunes Library…then it dawned on me… why shouldn’t I just be able to use my iPod for this? But not as simply a hard drive, but be able to access my songs on the iPod the same as I do now?

You can delete all the songs from your computer and just keep them on the iPod by changing the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos". In manual mode you can connect and play the songs from your iPod through iTunes on your computer. You can get details here: Managing content manually on iPod
One major word of caution. If you delete songs from your computer and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem (and that's a very strong possibility). You should reconsider your original idea of investing in an external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up songs you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD. Usually this error occurs when trying to downgrade the iOS or in a previously jailbroken phone. In this case, you cannot get help here. The internet and Google are your best friends.

Yes. Edit > Preferences > Parental, and check the box for "Disable - iTunes Store."
Also, go into your account payment information, and make sure the credit card is set to "None."

Try this, hold the middle button and the menu button for 10 seconds while it is plugged into the computer. See if it will come back to life. You may have to try this several times. Give it a try.

i am currently in the same situation. i purchased an external hard drive and set itunes to save to it in the preferences, and this worked, but only for new additions. all of my current music still plays from my mac HD and not the external. i am assuming i will need to re-add every song. the only plus is that when i transferred my songs to the external, it saved my settings. hopefully it saves the play counts.

Hm, good suggestion, but I've actually already done this (and I've had a friend go through the steps with me). There is just NOTHING that is showing up under any of the categories in the cloud for downloading. The thing is, I'm just not sure if I enabled cloud-sharing or not on my iphone (although I know I've backed up my data through cloud on my iphone at some point).

It's not an ideal solution ... but have you considered creating a second library (called, say, "Private Library") containing just the personal recordings?
To create the private library, hold down the shift key while launching iTunes. Click "Create Library" in the dialog that comes up.
Once you've created and opened the "Private library", don't activate home sharing for it. Now go "Edit > Preferences". In the "Advanced" tab, select "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library", as per the following screenshot:
... and click OK.
Now add the personal recordings to the Private Library.
To get back to your original library, quit iTunes. Hold down the Shift key while launching iTunes ... but this time click the "Choose library" button. Browse to the iTunes library file for your original library and doubleclick that. You should now be seeing your original library.
Delete the personal items from your original library.
Now, in order to see those recordings in iTunes, all you have to do is do a "Choose library" when launching iTunes, and open Private library. Because Home sharing isn't activated for Private library, your sister won't be able to access those recordings. (She won't be able to access your original library either, though, when you have Private library running.)
