Any way to restore PC iPod music using a Mac w/o reformatting?

I had an iPod using itunes from a PC. The PC died last year, so it has been over a year since I used my iPod. Prior to the PC dying, the iPod had all its music. Although I have the music files stored on an MyBook external drive, the PC is dead and gone so I can't restore the files from the computer.
I now use a Mac, so I can't use the iPod on my Mac without it getting reformatted. Any suggestions or software I could use on a Mac that could restore files to a Windows-based iPod?
I have an iPod A1040, 40GB from 2004. I believe the software version on it is version 2.3.

The backup of your iPod Touch would include your camera roll photos.  Restoring the backup to another iPod Touch or iPhone would recover them.  Photos will not be restored by restoring the backup to an iPad.
Note: Apple deletes iCloud backups after 180 days of inactivity so be sure to do this before then.

Head to Settings -> General -> Erase all Content and Settings. This procedure will not however, restore a fresh copy of the iPod's firmware onto the device.

  • Is there any way to restore my iPod if iTunes won't recognize it?

I bought my husband a 30 gig ipod for Christmas and gave it to him early. Last night I bought and installed a video converter so that he could watch movies on the ipod. This morning when he updated the device with a new video and tried to play it, the screen turned green with little black squares. Itunes does not recognize that the ipod is connected to the computer and I can't turn the ipod off. Is there any way to restore the ipod if Itunes won't recognize it?

Try this, hold the middle button and the menu button for 10 seconds while it is plugged into the computer. See if it will come back to life. You may have to try this several times. Give it a try.

  • Is there any way to make my iPod just use a folder/filename structure?

I'm really sick and tired of the half-baked way my iPod insists - INSISTS - upon displaying tracks by the metadata.
Sure, it's nice and neat, but frankly, it's a pain in my arse. A lot of the music I want to play is mp3 files ripped from my videogames, or files which are extremely old and have no metadata. Given this, I just want it to display them the way Windows does - by letting me organize my music into folders, and displaying them by only the filename, regardless of the metadata.
It's very difficult to find, for example, a certain song by Bon Jovi, which has no metadata. My other Bon Jovi music has it, but this one song does not. The other songs, if I view the huge list, are displayed alphabetically by the metadata name tag, and not by my filename tag. This one song, lacking metadata, is displayed only by filename.
Or my videogame music - almost all of it follows a format of ## - filename.mp3. Unfortunately, I have like, ten or so game's soundtracks that I have done this with, so there's like, 10 files which only appear as 02 - filename. On my Windows PC, there is no conflict, as I have them sorted into appropriate sub-folders of my giant my music directory. But my iPod refuses to do this.
How can I make my iPod behave consistantly and display the files in a structure of my manual creation, instead of having it trying to do everything for me and buggering the job royally?

I just have a hard time comprehending why they don't handle file structure sorting.
It's not a difficult thing to understand. It is, in fact, a computing science +industry standard+, deviations from it are the +unusual and esoteric+, not something I'd expect from one of the industry's giants - certainly not a mandatory deviation.
It seems like it's a decision that only serves to frustrate people. I can understand why they would want a metadata sorting mode; I can even see making that the default setting... I'm just kind of flabberghasted at the uninclusion of an alternative file sorting method for those of us who trust our own devices better than metadata that may be incorrect, missing, typographically flawed, or what-have-you. I can get to my own music just fine... On my PC. Why not my iPod? Why does the industry-leading mp3 player have to make it a frustrating and difficult chore to find the media I want to play?

  • Is there any way to track a stolen laptop using the mac address, or by triangulating the wifi, or even by checking to see if the macbooks serial number has been registered online anywhere?

A little info on my question,
I had it stoeln on June 22nd 2013. I had recently bought it so had not installed any software on it nor did I have registered with icloud. I had contacted police, registered it stolen with Apple (but then just discovered this week that apple do not have a database for stolen products, which makes no sense at all).
I have contacted all the major pawn shops and computer stores in town etc etc. I have recently discovered that each laptop has a unique MAC address whcih begs the question, is that traceable somehow? I have been made aware that the router strips the mac address before it connects it to the internet but does the isp log the laptops MAC address? If i contacted all the major isp in my country would they have the ability to search for the mac address of my latop and then link that with an ip address?
Any help would be great please!

Yeah but I registered it stolen with Apple first thing, then called local police etc. Apple told me on the phone that the serial has been logged as stolen, which I assumed would limit the computers use online.
Every machine has a unique serial number what I was getting at is there must be some way to track the serial number and for example if the theif logged onto facebook using a stolen machine, if there were a register of stolen equipment then red flags would pop up, you know what I mean?
Well, I hadn't heard of that before. If it's true, then what you say should also be true but the Mac would have to publish its hardware serial number over the Internet and I haven't heard of that either. The only Apple tech that is supposed to constantly track you is iCloud.
You said you assumed the database would limit use online but if that's only an assumption, you need to ask Apple what exactly the stolen database does. It is possible that the serial number might only get flagged if it comes into an Apple Store for service, if it ever does. You need to clarify this with Apple.

  • Any way to get free ringtones without using a mac or itunes?

I am a new iphone user. I have a PC..with itunes on it, yet my husband has a mac with all our new music  on it (dont want to open itunes on my pc and have it download all the new stuff...satellite internet can't handle the transfer!)
anyway...is there a way to get free ringtones onto my iphone WITHOUT having to go thru itunes?

i just remember that if i open itunes on my pc, wont it automatically detect new downloads and try to add them? I have satellite internet and when i do that, it exceeds my fair threshold policy and i cant have that...
also wasn't sure if i could hook an iphone to a pc and have it transfer the ringtones properly.
EE- do you have to have music on your iphone already to do that?

  • Is there a way to restore an iPod to its factory condition?

Since the last updater, I havnt been able to connect my iPod to any computer.
Im sure the updater corrupted the iPod, so what I would like to do is wipe the iPod clean and start fresh with the factory settings.
I know you can restore it using the updater, but because my computer freezes everytime its plugged in, I cannot restore it using the computer.
Is there a way to restore the iPod without using a computer?

    Tyler:
First, start Task Manager. Kill iTunes.exe, iPodService.exe, and iTunesHelper.exe. Just select them and End Process on each one.
Next, use these instructions to put the iPod into forced disk mode: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Now, connect it to the computer. You should be able to recognize the iPod in this way.
If these instructions do not work, then something else is wrong, and whatever device locks up is where the problem is. Meaning that
-if the iPod won't go into Forced Disk Mode or comes out of Forced Disk mode, then the iPod has the problem and needs to be replaced (it's not fixable by you)
-if the computer locks up, then the computer probably needs to be formatted and have Windows reinstalled, since no Apple software is now running on the thing (you killed the only three pieces of Apple software that matter)
This is one of those things that is simply always true. There's no trickery involved, no way you can make it behave other than the way I've laid it out above. It's a simple matter of knowing how the stuff works.
So, I hope that helps you find the problem at least, if not to fix it. In forced disk mode, with no Apple software running, the iPod is just like any other external hard drive. Nothing special to it.

  • Any way to restore music and photos if iPod when all erased due to interrupted sync?

is there any way to restore music and photos on iPod when all erased due to interrupted sync?

You said the music and photos were all erased from the iPod? And now you say your computer and all backups are gone. There is therefore no way to recover your files short of paying thousands of dollars to a professional data recovery laboratory and even then there's no guarantee you'll get all of it – or even some of it – back.

  • Any way to restore iTunes library from iPod?

I lost a hard drive on my labtop and had to re-install the iPod and iTunes programs after getting a new disk. Now the iTunes library is empty and would not recognize the old iPod and want to erase all its contents. Is there any way to restore the library from iPod to my laptop (a Compaq running Windows XP)? The Apple site says I can reverse sync up to five computers with the songs purchases from iStore, but I can't figure out where are the buttons either on the iTunes or the iPod. For the experts out there please help!
    Kirkbrook in Cupertino

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. The transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation as the iPod preferences are no longer in the location described for instance also it won't transfer playlists. However if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. Relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Is there any way that I can transfer music I didn't purchase from my iPod to my computer or iTunes?

I took some songs off of my friends computer and put them onto my iPod. I want to make a cd but I don't know how to put the music onto my computer. If that's possible. I also didn't use iTunes to put the music on my iPod, So if there's any way I can get the music onto my computer, that'd be great.

" When I did this, my library showed all the music I have "purchased" from itunes but did not have the music that I downloaded a long time ago through itunes from my old CDs."
    Correct.
" How can I get that music to show up in my library now on my new computer?  "
Copy it from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod.

  • My daughter cant remember her passcode, and she has never synced it.  Is there any way to restore without losing all the apps and music?

My daughter can't remember her passcode, and she has never synced it.  Is there any way to restore it without losing all the apps and music that were downloaded?

If you can't remember the Passcode, you need to restore the device from the computer it was last synced with.
Follow the instructions for putting the device in recovery mode >  iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
If you are a resident of the U.S., have iTunes 10.3 or later installed, and iOS 4.3.3 or later, can re download iTunes purchases for free.
So retore the iPod, then re download the iTunes media.

  • HT1329 Is there any way I can get the music from my iPod to my new laptop?

So recently my computer broke, taking all of my music with it, and now I only have the music on my iPod. Is there any way I can take the music from my iPod and put it on my new laptop?

You can't transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  However, there are methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your computer, you can add them to your new computer's iTunes library.
