Any way to schedule Spotlight indexing?

Since upgrading to Tiger, I notice my computer's hard drive activity is much more frequent with Spotlight updating the index while I surf the web, work with iCal, whatever. Nothing out of the ordinary for Spotlight, as far as I can tell, but I'd like to reduce the hard drive "chatter" without turning Spotlight off completely (via Spotless).
Any tips for turning "down" the frequency of indexing files? I would love if we could manually update indexes for searching, like in Panther.
Thanks for any help you can offer!

Not a contradiction because the data written to the index is usually quite small compared to the size of the file being written to disk at the same time. For example, with images - when you save the file to disk, it may be a 5MB file. When written to disk, it may trigger an associated write of 10KB of metadata.
For documents with a lot of text, there would be a scan of the file as Spotlight pulls out the unique terms in the file to add to the content index, but even this will be quite small compared to the actual file. So, the extra overhead specifically due to Spotlight normally shouldn't be noticed. Essentially it adds a relatively insignificant secondary write to the larger original disk write that you initiated when you saved or copied the file.
If you are noticing a lot of extra activity with iCal or when surfing maybe there is something else going on. With iCal and Safari open, mds and mdimport are sitting quietly at 0% CPU and not adding much of anything to disk writes except when first opened for me.
As for using Spotless, et al, people have found that they are unable to get Spotlight to find anything even after they try to turn off the effects of Spotless. This may be due to them trying a cocktail of methods to alter Spotlight behavior and then not knowing how to reverse all the steps.
Just in the the 2.5 years that I've been on Tiger and been dealing with Spotlight, it seems to work the best when you just let it work and not try so hard to fix it.

  • Can we put INDEXES on Views if not Is there any way to make it Index bas

    Hi
I am running a query in which there are several views involved in the join condition Can we put INDEXES on Views in ORACLE 9i if not Is there any way to make it Index based views beacuse the result that i am getting is very slow and is eating like 10gb of the temp tablespace.
    Thanks

No, you cannot put indexes on a view. Think about what a view is, a stored sql statement. Oracle has no way of knowing what rows are in a view until it actually runs the view. So, even if you could, Oracle would need to run the view to get the rows, build the index, then run your query a second time using the index. Seems counter productive to me. A view can use indexes on the underlying tables if appropriate.
Generally speaking, I would say that a query that makes use of multiple views is probably really inefficient. Often, you are only looking for one or two columns from a view which may require joining several tables whose columns are of no use in the main query. I would start by re-writing the query using the base tables, and only using those tables that are actually required to answer the question.

  • Any way to disable automatic indexing while editing source?

    I am using Build JDEVADF_MAIN.DROP5_GENERIC_080107.0300.4814
Whenever I edit a jsff file (for example, type a character), I get a little box in the lower right corner with the text "Indexing 1 File." While this is going on, my text editor is blocked and I can't see what I am typing on the page, nor can I do anything else. This is really annoying and I would like to disable it. I have looked through Tools | Preferences, but can't find a setting. Is there any way to disable file indexing during editing?

    Hi,
you are using an Oracle internal build and ask the question on a public forum. If the indexing happens on any new file creation, please file a bug

I hear you, I do.  But the problem is that with my Mac, I have to stop and postpone whatever project I am working on while the backup occurs.  It just slows down my computer.
Then something is wrong with your backups.  Changing the interval will only deal with they symptoms, not the actual problem, and you won't be as well protected as with hourly backups.
If the backups are much larger than they ought to be,  see #D4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If the sizes are reasonable, but it seems to take too long, see #D2 there.

  • Is there any way to schedule an Internet connection reset?

    Hello.
I live in a three-story house and have a Wi-Fi network set up using a Time Capsule and a couple of AirPort Express units. The Time Capsule, which is connected to the modem and is the initiator of the network, is on the second floor and there’s an AirPort Express each on both the first and third floors.
In India, we do not have the luxury of high speed unlimited access to the Internet. We can either opt for a 2Mbps connection (yeah, +scorching fast+, I know) that is capped at 2.5GB and allows unlimited access between 02:00 AM and 08:00 AM each day, or a 512Kbps unlimited connection.
Right now, I’m subscribed to the latter, but I made the mistake of traveling to the USA recently and, after having gotten used to the 16Mbps speeds for a month, I just cannot tolerate the incredibly slow speeds anymore.
Therefore, I’m thinking of switching to the 2Mbps connection. Since I download a lot of stuff though, I need to find a way to have the Internet connection automatically disconnect and reconnect at 02:00 AM and then get disconnected at 08:00 AM. Is there any way to get this done?
Putting my Mac to sleep and have it automatically wake up at 02:00 AM won’t work because the Internet connection will still remain connected on the Time Capsule and I will still get charged for the nighttime downloading. Is there any way to have my Time Capsule do the job for me—some Automator script or something, perhaps?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

How would that help though? I need the Internet connection to be reset, so that a new session starts after 02:00 AM, which will then be counted among the happy hours and won’t be chargeable. Restricted my Mac from accessing the wireless network is not the solution here.
Thanks for trying to come up with a solution though. Do let me know if you think of any other alternative.

  • Is there any way to schedule the webi report as body of the mail

    Hi All,
I have a bit different requirement. I need to schedule the webi reports to BlackBerry Mobile .
The report should be displayed not as an attachment or URL but should be the body of the mail.
Is there any Trick or Tip to do that.
    Thanks in Advance

You could schedule the reports to run as an Excel or PDF document and the destination as a folder on a server.  Then after the reports are sent to the destination, you could use the Program Job Server to run a script which parses the files line-by-line and creates an email.  It's not the most elegant solution but in theory it should work.

  • Any way to utilize CTXCAT index?

I’ve been looking into trying to add indexes to columns in a table which have a data type of VARCHAR2(4000). Does anyone know if there is a way to utilize a CTXCAT index from an OBIEE request? It requires a special syntax in the where clause so I'm not sure if there is a way to make OBIEE actual take advantage of the index if I do create it.

9 - MIC IN MUTE -- ground when mic isn't plugged in, +2VDC when mic is plugged in
0 - Audio cable detect -- will be ground when headphones are plugged in (not normally used)

You can use Find File in the File menu of the Finder to customize your Spotlight searches more. There is also a nice software called Notlight which limits Spotlight searches as well:

  • Set Spotlight Indexing Time to Midnight?

Is there any way to set Spotlight indexing to only work at midnight or some other time?  The amount of indexing that goes on constantly is slowing down my work time and finder access during the day.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "mdworker" (without the quotes) in the Filter text field. Post the messages that appear in the Console window — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.
    Step 2
Do the same with the search string "mds".

  • Any way to add a drive to Spotlight Privacy BEFORE connecting it?

I want to move a few files over from the External drive of another computer, but I don't want either that drive or the drive of the "target" computer to start indexing (I'm not using the term "target" here as in +Target Disk Mode+.) Is there any way to add that External drive to Privacy before I even connect it? As indexing will already have begun, I don't want to wait until the drive is already connected and then drag it into Privacy.
I've noticed that if I use the "add" button in Spotlight Privacy, it only gives me the option to select Folders/Locations already on the drive, with no way to simply enter the name of the External Volume into Privacy by typing it. Can I trick it into doing this by creating an empty Folder with the name of that drive and then adding that Folder to Privacy?
And, is there any way, without dragging the drive of the "target" computer into Privacy, to prevent it from starting to index the contents of the External?
In other words, I'd like the entire operation to have nothing to do with Spotlight. Disabling Spotlight entirely is not an option, since I use it in a very limited way for Mail and very occasionally for searching.

Then what's the next best option (assuming there is a next best option of any kind): drag the icon of the external into Privacy as soon as it mounts? (This is an external clone that's always in Privacy on its home computer, anyway.*) And drag the "home" computer's icon into Privacy as soon as the external mounts, also, and then re-index it once the external is unmounted? Can it be done this way, i.e. by interrupting the immediate indexing that will take place by moving both volumes into Privacy?
*According to what you said, since that volume is set in Privacy on its home computer, would that mean it won't try to index the internal to which it is mounted, even if moved to a different computer (but different OS, Leo not Tiger?) But the Leo (internal) will still try to index the contents of the external (Tiger)? In other words, are there two different (simultaneous?) indexings possible: the external (clone) tries to index the internal volume on which it is mounted, and the internal tries to index the additional volume of the external which has just been mounted to it? This stuff gets confusing.

  • Is there any way to an index that can be used to include the "OR condition "?

    Hello I have some questions.

    c2 varchar2(10),

Is there any way to an index that can be used to include the "OR condition "?
    Thanks.
    GooGyum.

A database cannot in general use indexes in this way for an 'or' involving two different columns. However, for this specific example one can easily rewrite the query using 'UNION' to use the relevant indexes while still giving the same (correct) result:
    Command> explain select * from test t1 where t1.c1 = 'AAAAAAAAAA' union select * from test t2 where t2.c2 = 'AAAAAAAAAA';
    Query Optimizer Plan:
      STEP:                1
      LEVEL:               1
      OPERATION:           RowLkRangeScan
      TBLNAME:             TEST
      IXNAME:              TEST
      INDEXED CONDITION:   T1.C1 = 'AAAAAAAAAA'
      NOT INDEXED:         <NULL>
      STEP:                2
      LEVEL:               2
      OPERATION:           RowLkRangeScan
      TBLNAME:             TEST
      IXNAME:              TEST_IDX2
      INDEXED CONDITION:   T2.C2 = 'AAAAAAAAAA'
      NOT INDEXED:         <NULL>
      STEP:                3
      LEVEL:               1
      OPERATION:           OrderBy
      TBLNAME:             <NULL>
      IXNAME:              <NULL>
      INDEXED CONDITION:   <NULL>
      NOT INDEXED:         <NULL>
      STEP:                4
      LEVEL:               2
      OPERATION:           UnionMergeSort
      TBLNAME:             <NULL>
      IXNAME:              <NULL>
      INDEXED CONDITION:   <NULL>
      NOT INDEXED:         <NULL>
Maybe you can apply a similar trick? If you know there is no possibility of duplicate rows then you can further optimise this (in terms of performance) by using UNION ALL.
