Any way to split library between multiple hard drives?

I recently purchased an Apple TV and started 'really' using iTunes for all of my music and videos. Is there a way I can keep my music on my iMac's hard drive and my videos on an external without switching libraries and still keep it (at least the video hard drive) organized?

I had the same problem awhile back...the way I got around this was to create 2 separate libraries with a simple way to switch between the two...I"ve got one library on my Local Powerbook drive which I named "local" and one on my ext drive that I named "External"..Download the script "iTunes Library Manager" by Doug Adams.. http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/ituneslibrarymanager.php
It's a simple little script that will help you switch between the two. You wil have to move your whole library over to your HD first...then just move the albums/genres/whatever you want back to the local library on you Laptop. Just follow the directions with the script. You should be fine

  • Can I split my iTunes library between 2 hard drives?

Can iTunes library be split between to hard drives?
    Hi,
My laptop has 2 x 250GB internal hard drives. I wish there was 1 x 500 GB one.
1 of them is nearly full with music only 2GB remaining and the other one has over 100GB remaining.
I'm wondering is it possible to split the location of the library between the 2 drives without too much trouble or is it messy or even possible?!
In other words when I open iTunes the music that is on the nearly full hard drive will remain there and any music I import going forward will be re-directed to the other hard drive but still appear in iTunes along with the music from the other drive.
    Thanks...

    I have the same question.
I would like to be able to do the same thing with all my media. I'm a DJ and certain aspects of Mac Os X Lion or iCloud, and iTunes Match, don't favor folks with tons of media, storage wise. I'm not happy that there's a limit on how much space iCloud will give you. Yet, I feel forced to upgrade to Lion within the next 4 days. I've been hesitant to rip my collection or even upload all those digital copies because where will I put all those files. I agree with needing like 4-8T just to store, but how? I don't have Thunderbolt, only Firewire on late '08 iMac 20" and USB on 08 MacBook 13" Aluminum. Bleh!
If you can use Time Capsule to back up your entire network with more than one computer, it would seem likely that you should be able to piggy back 2 xTime Capsules. I believe they come with 2-3Ts now and you can get them refurbished? I'm gonna look at Time Capsule Support to find out for myself, I'll let you know what I find, also. One thing I did noticed was that I had uploaded a bunch of Digital Copies from movies I had bought from Blu-Ray Combo Packs like 2 years ago and deleted them from MacBook for more space, only to recently find that they had been saved as purchased items from the iTunes Store. So now I can grab them from iTunes and watch them anytime off my Apple TV.
    Good Luck,
    Jenn

  • Any way to span a single iTunes Library over multiple hard drives?

I have a hard drive that is almost full and the only thing on it is my iTunes library. It is not feasible for me to get a larger hard drive as this one is already a 1TB hard drive. Now, I have seen I can create multiple libraries, with each library on a different hard drive if I wish. However, not only is most of the media in the library podcasts, using multiple libraries for a single iPod Touch would be a pain.
So, is there a way for the iTunes Library to span over more than one hard drive, but yet be a single library? It would make it easier to sync my iPod Touch.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming that I would have to "import" my old drive into the library
You don't import anything since your library is the same as it was. All those items are still in iTunes in the same location. The ONLY thing different is iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
Or am I wrong and it will have my previous media folder still in the library, and anything new would be put in the new media folder?
Yes & yes. Everything in iTunes will still be in iTunes, stay in the same location it is now and iTunes will use it from there.
Anything new added to iTunes will go to the location you set in iTunes prefs -> Advanced.

  • Splitting music between external hard-drive and laptop?

I've just bought an external hard-drive for my ageing Powerbook, and am wanting to split my iTunes collection so I have all of my music on the external drive, and a selection (30Gb or so) on my laptop, for when I'm on the move or disconnected.
There are several posts on this topic, but they all seem confusing and contradictory. Most people seemed to suggest using the Multiple Libraries function in iTunes, so this is what I did. I set up a small library file for the music on my laptop, and a larger one for the music stored on the external drive, which I can switch between by using the Option/Alt key when loading iTunes.
The problem is, iTunes doesn't seem to allow you to have different Music Folders for each of these libraries. So if I change the destination for my Large Library so that music is sent to/stored on my external hard-drive, it also changes it for my Small Library - and vice versa. So iTunes is constantly loading up with the wrong default settings, and if I try to correct it, it starts laboriously re-labelling my entire library. It's now telling me half the music I know is on my laptop can only be found on my external.
I realise I could just unselect the "Keep iTunes folder organised" and "Copy to iTunes Music folder" options, but this would mean having a mass of music labelled on my laptop that's not actually there when I don't have my hard-drive plugged in, with the Missing Excalamation Point Of Death taking over my screen. I do not want this.
Is there no simple way to have music separated into two places, and my computer show me what's actually there? It ain't rocket science, is it?
    All assistance gratefully recieved.

There is a KB doc from Apple: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304447. The KB doc shows how to add a second (or third, etc) to your iTunes app. This is what I've done so I now have a library that uses my external drive for normal usage at home and syncing my iPod and iPhone. The second library is used for just music when I'm on the road. Hope this helps.

  • How to set up One iTunes Library with Multiple Hard Drives

    Hello,
I have a question about setting up a daisy chain of external storage hard drives for my itunes library and need some advice.  I have run out of room on my 4TB external storage.  I have an additional 4TB and a 2TB external storage (all are MyBooks) and trying to figure out how to separate out my itunes folder:  I would like to put the TV on one 4TB and the Movies and the other 4TB and the Music/Apps/etc on the 2TB.  Here are my questions
1.) How to I point my iTunes to where I have moved them?  Just make and alias of the folder and put that back in the original folder?
2.) How do I get the new iTunes downloads to go the correct folder to download so it does not set up a new library for downloading?  Can I set more that one location in my preference?  If so- how?
I have looked in the forums and all the information is older and does not address this exact issue.
    Set up:
Mac mini hooked up to Vizio TV running Lion 10.7.2
Processor 2.26 GHZ Intel Core Duo 2
Memory 4GB ( do not really store anything on this one)
    MY Books
1  2TB   Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
2  4TB   Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1  1TB   Mac OS Extended (Journaled)-  this is for documents, etc
All these are daisy chain with 800 Firewire to the Macmini and hooked to TV with HDMI.
Any suggestions would be helpful.  I can not download anything else from iTunes until I get this resolved and it is a real bummer.

Here are three different methods >
How to use multiple iPods, iPads, or iPhones with one computer, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495
This article > iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296
    suggests using contacts groups.
When syncing contacts, you can choose to sync all of your contacts or only selected groups.
You can select a group of contacts to which all new contacts created on your iOS device will be added.
You can set up groups in the Address Book application.
If you are all going to use the same iTunes apps library, turn off "Automatically sync new apps" in the apps tab just below the list of apps.  Then you won't get new apps on your device unless you select them.

  • Have a lot of music... Any way to keep it off my hard drive yet use it?

    Hi all!
I am quite new to the mac family, and am just getting my computer set up to my liking. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to keep my 12,000 songs on my external hard drive and use them from there, instead of putting them onto my relatively small (compared to my external hard drive) 250GB hard drive on my mac. When i used to use windows, whether I wanted it this way or not, It would "copy" all the files into itunes, but they wouldn't actually be stored there. Only the names would appear, and I would still have to plug in the ext. hard drive if i actually wanted to play the files. is there anything like this for mac?
also, since I have so much music, and download music so often and in large amounts, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on how to keep an organized music file, and a way of downloading and putting them into itunes so that I can actually keep track of all the music?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks to all.
    Best,
    Alex

so basically, I have all this music on my computer already, and I've been trying to go through it to cut it down to only the things I want.... can I drag those files directly from itunes to a hard drive
yes. i would ALWAYS let iTunes do the moving lest it loses track of where the files are stored.
follow the instructions in this link to move your iTunes library to an external HD. the article is for Mac. if your music is still on the windows machine, check this read for pointers: http://lifehacker.com/242468/geek-to-live--how-to-move-an-itunes-library-from-a- pc-to-mac-and-back.
also, when I've done that, and have everything on the external hard drive, I can go clean up all the music files still left on my computer.... then I press option and drag everything back to itunes? what will that do for me?
as i mentioned, this will make iTunes reference the path to the original location (your external HD) but will not copy the files physically.
and how will I be able to work with my music and update it after that?
you mount the external HD before launching iTunes. now you can do whatever as if the files where on your startup disk.

  • Having a library on multiple hard drives

So in the past year I became a mac convert and I use my mac mini for just about everything I can. I’m thinking of buying a new ibook when they come out in march/april and have a question about itunes for anyone who can answer.
I currently have about 80 gb of music on an external hard drive that I plug into my mac mini. Obviously I wouldn’t be copying all this music to an ibook hard drive because then I would have verry little space left for applications… But I wouldn’t mind being able to copy some music onto it for when I’m on the road, and having the rest on my external for when I’m home. However when exploring itunes there doesn’t seem to be away to have multiple libraries on different drives.
Does anybody know a way to do this, or if there’s third party software that will assist with it?
    ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I believe if you just uncheck: "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to Library" under the advaced settings, that should work fine. I used to do this in the past before I moved everything to a file server. It worked for me, just be aware that if you try to play or synch something to your iPod that is not attached, it will complain.

  • Combining Multiple Hard Drives

If I have a lot of data that needs to be split between multiple hard drives, is there any way of installing the drives but having the OS treat them as a single drive? The idea being that my file system would be just as easy to manage but I could have a huge amount of extra storage.
I've read a bit about using a RAID 0 array in order to do this, but apparently this splits up individual files between the drives to make the system faster, so if one drive fails, you've lost everything.
Is there a way of setting up the drives so that one drive is filled to capacity, then the second is filled and the third and so on? So it's just treated as one big hard drive without any file separation taking place?
    Any help appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Adam

what drives & capacity do you have? are they the same - match with one another?
RAID 0 "stripes" your data between a pair of usually matched drives - capacity, brand, model. 1TB drive + 1TB drive = 2TB of total storage. This makes things go fast, but isn't safe.
RAID 1 "mirrors" the data between a pair of usually matched drives - capacity, brand, model. 1TB drive + 1TB drive = 1TB of total storage. This isn't fast but keeps data safe.
RAID 10 combines both qualities above. it takes at least 4 drives, all identical, & is half of total storage. 4 x 1TB = 2Tb of total storage.
SPAN is when you take a group of disks & "add" them together to make one big pool of storage. it's not safe nor fast. a drive falling out of the array can create data loss.

  • Any improvements in sharing an iPhoto Library between multiple users?

It is possible and Apple Approved to share an iPhoto Library between multiple users, but the Library must be stored on a drive or disk image that ignores permissions:
    http://tech.kateva.org/2008/10/apple-supports-multi-user-iphoto.html
This doesn't work for me. Has Apple changed anything with iLife '09 to make it easier to share a Library? For example, have they changed from the prior Package format?

Alternatives to a trip to the Terminal:
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. The problem here is that OS X works very hard to keep your data safe and secure from the other users. You're trying to beat what's built in to the system. So, to beat the system
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
Lastly: This method seems a little clunky at first, but works very well. Most importantly, it uses the System to do the job for you.
Create a new Account on your Mac, call it Media. Create an iPhoto Library there. (BTW: This will work for iTunes too.)
Enable Sharing on the Library:(Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other accounts. In those accounts, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. The Library will appear in the other source pane.
This means that both users will be able to see the pics. If you want to use a pic then simply drag it from the shared Library to your own in the iPhoto Window. This means that each user can have their own edits.
If you want to add photos to the Library: Log into the Media account for that purpose.
To make it all seamless: Set your Mac to log into the Media Account automatically. Set iPhoto to launch on log-in. Then switch to your own account using Fast User Switching.
Net result: a Library that's permanently available to all users but also protected. Each user can have their own versions of the pics if they want.
No partitioning, no permissions issues. Uses no extra disk space. What's not to like?
    Regards
    TD

  • Question/Problem Sharing iTunes Library between multiple users

    Hello all,
I have a question (potential problem) regarding sharing an iTunes Library between multiple users.
In the past, I had placed the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared, and created an alias to it in the "Music" folder of each user, and it worked fine.  However, with a recent upgrade to Mac OS 10.5, only the Home user account can access the library.
I read the Apple Support Document http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1203 uner Mac OS X which specifically states *not* to move the iTunes folder, just the iTunes Media folder (which I don't have, would that be iTunes Music?).
Any recommendations?  Should I delete the different alias, move the iTunes folder back to the home user, and then follow the instructions in the support document?
We're also looking to sync music purchsed on our iPod touches, as well as apps (which weren't supported in our privous Mac OS X version.
    Any advice is appreiciated.

    David Guay wrote:

    yes.
specifically states *not* to move the iTunes folder
*do* keep the entire iTunes folder in /users/shared, however, instead of creating aliases, launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder in /users/shared.
obviously, only one iTunes at a time can access the library !

  • Hi, I had to re install my itunes library from a hard drive to my new laptop. Now I cant sync my iphone because itunes thinks all songs are new and basically doubling all albums. Should i restore iphone or is there a better way?

hi, i had to re install my itunes library from a hard drive to my new laptop. Now itunes thinks i am trying to add new albums and saying there isnt enoug space. should i restore or is there a better way.

Have you tried exporting a 10 second section of the footage to see if the issue shows up once the seqeunce is actually exported from the timeline. I edit on CS5 with windows 7 pro at work quite often and have no issues so I assure you that isn't the issue. I also edit with AVCHD footage when at home and work quite freqeuntly as well so I'm positive that isn't the issue. It sounds like a GPU driver has been corrupted in the way it interacts with premiere pro. What type of GPU do you have? If it supports MPE's GPU acceleration have you tried turning it off and seeing if that makes any difference?
Anyways though try to export a 10 second test section of your timeline to see if when the clip is exported from premiere it will play normally in windows media player or vlc or w/e media player you want to use. If it exports fine then you can almost be positive it's a corrupted video card driver. If that's the case I'd re-install your GPU's driver and also check your gpu makers website to see if they have a updated driver avaiable.
