Any way to transfer a large library from Mac over to PC ??

My iMac G5 is on the verge of dieing. Apple gave me a new midplane board last year, but now it seems I'm also blessed with a bad power supply and/or capacitors. Worse yet, this cropped up a couple of months past the "sorry we sold you a defective product" warranty period. I don't know if I'm going to be able to talk Apple into repairing it or not - and to be honest, I don't currently have enough funds to replace it. So, if Apple won't fix what was broke to start with, I'm 100% crap out of luck.
My question - my wife has a large iTunes library she uses for her dance studio. It's somewhere in the vicinity of 80 to 90 gigs worth of music. Is there any way I can easily transfer this library over to one of my PCs as a backup so it's not lost? I'm not sure how many more times the iMac will even turn on at this point, and the next time it boots up I'd like to be able to do something to keep from losing her library, which I'd consider to be irreplaceable.
Suggestions?
Wish me luck when I call Apple support next week. Hopefully they'll have pity on me for all the problems I've had with this iMac and send me the replacement parts I need!

This article in Apple's knowledge base should give you some ideas.
Best of luck.

  • What is the best way to transfer my iphoto library from old imac to new imac. both have iphoto 9.2.1

What is the best way to transfer my iphoto library from current imac to my new imac.  Both imacs have iphoto 9.2.1
os on old imac is 10.6.8.   os on new imac is 10.7.2.   I want the albums  and events to stay intact.  I have 4500 photos and 79 videos. 14.9 gb. looking for some advice here. Thanks so much.

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

Your itunes library should be on your computer and should be included in your regular backup copy of your computer.

  • What is the best way to transfer my music library from my windows pc to my new macbook air?

what is the best way to transfer my large iTunes library from my windows pc to my new macbook air?  Not all purchased, many from CDs I owned

Moving a library: Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its sub-folders and files) intact to the other drive.  Hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) and open iTunes.  At the prompt to create or choose a library choose the copied iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • Safeset way to transfer i tunes library from old laptop to newer Sony Vaio??  I'm concerned about transfering viruses etc...i have an external drive available.

Hiya. I want to transfer my I tunes library from an old laptop I've not used for a couple of years. I've got a sony vaio now, so I guess my options are either Windows migration or use my new external hard drive. I'm worried about any viruses etc being passed across, so what is the safest option??

There should never be a need to turn off anti-virus protection to effect a data transfer.  The key to successfully transferring an iTunes library from one computer to another is to have the library (database and media) in a "well formed" layout that facilitates the process.  In practical terms, this means that all your media (songs, audiobooks, TV shows, ...) is contained within the iTunes Media folder within the iTunes folder that's located by default in one of the following locations:
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
    Windows Vista: C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes
Windows 7 and Windows 8: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes (in theses "My Music" is one of Windows' virtual libraries and the same path as used in Vista is normally equally valid)
This folder and its subfolders should look like this:
If this is the case, then you can:
Exit iTunes, and copy this iTunes folder, in its entirety, to an external HDD connected to your old machine
In your case, I'd then suggest running a complete virus / malware scan on the external HDD.  It would be unusual to find viruses or malware embedded in iTunes' media files or other data, but doing this step would at least confirm that the data you're moving is infection-free.
Then, copy this iTunes folder to the corresponding location on your new laptop (where iTunes should not be running at this time).  If you've already installed iTunes and haven't added any new content to the library on the new machine you can just overwrite the files/folders that you find there.
Just to make sure that iTunes is picking up the correct library database, i.e., the one you just transferred, hold down the Shift key as you start iTunes, and when you see this prompt:
click on Choose Library... navigate to the location of the folder you just copied (assuming Windows 7 or 8, C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes), select the iTunes Library.itl file you see there, and click Open.
Your library will now be available to you on the new laptop.
    Two caveats:
If your iTunes media on the old machine is not in the well formed structure described above (which may be the case if you've added existing MP3 or other formats without having configured iTunes as follows (in Edit > Preferences > Advanced):
see Turingtest2's notes on Make a split library portable on the steps needed to reorganize your library into a more standard layout.  This may be a little tricky for you if the old machine is virus-infected to the extent that you can't run iTunes, but hopefully that won't be the case.
If you've already added anything to the library on your new machine prior to transferring data from the old one you'll need an extra step in the procedure described above, before step 3:
on the new machine (with iTunes not running) rename the C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes to something like "iTunesTemp"
copy the library files and folders as described above, so you have a C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes folder again
copy the contents of the C:\Users\username\iTunesTemp\iTunes Media folder (which will still contain any songs, etc, added on the new machine - you can just select any/all folders you find in that location except "Automatically Add to iTunes" and "Downloads") to C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes

I am brand new to the Mac world and very happy to be a part after my long trip with PC. I just recieved my new macbook pro and I am trying to find the best way to transfer my music library from my PC to my Mac. I also just purchased a new Itouch as well. I have not done anything with it yet and I was thinking it would be better to wait until I get my library situated with the macbook to do so?
Any help or advice would be a great help... I am completely lost. Everything that I have seen so far is more approachable to the point where it throws you off kilter!

  • Is there any way to transfer my media from my ipod touch to my new pc?  The media is not currently in my itunes library.

I can not upgrade my ipod touch because music that is currently on there will be lost.  Is there any way to transfer the media that I currently have on my touch to my itunes library or my pc?

The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases:  File>Transfer Purchases.
Copy everything from your old copmputer, or your backup copy of your old copmputer to your new one.

  • Is there any way to transfer music from a library to an Apple ID?

A couple of months ago, my Apple ID was hacked. I had to get a new one because whoever hacked it changed the password and the email and it didn't even show up in Apple's database when I called them. My problem is that I have A LOT of songs that I bought with my old ID. If anything happens to my computer, I dont want to lose all of them. Is there any way to transfer at least the PURCHASED songs in my library to my new ID? I don't know if the Apple guy had any idea what I meant when I asked him this back when it all happened, but he said there was and I haven't been able to find it...

    Back up the purchases.

  • Any way to transfer songs from iPhone TO iTunes on MacBook Pro?

I'm an idiot.  I'm just going to say that up front.  I feel that's fair for all who venture here.
I've had a terrible time with an update..and I wasn't able to get iTunes to acknowledge/recognize my iPhone or iPod once I ran and installed the current update.  While trying to get my iPhone/iPod to be recognized, I did a lot of removing/uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes.  During this mess.....I somehow DELETED MY ENTIRE iTunes LIBRARY!!!  The whole thing.  I have no idea how.
I thought I had been backing up....and thought I had Time Machine so I was safe.  I was wrong.  I won't even ask about Time Machine here....I've already disclosed I'm an idiot.
I am finally able to get iTunes to acknowledge my iPhone.  Thank goodness.  But, now......I have Songs and Playlists on my iPhone that aren't on iTunes.
Is there any way to transfer songs from iPhone TO iTunes?
    Thanks!

  • Is there any way to transfer the music already on ipod to itunes library

is there any way to transfer music already on my ipod to my itunes library without deleting the music

    Here's more info for you.
Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.
