Any Way to Use the Intel iMac Monitor/keyboard/mouse with a PC?

New Intel iMac arriving today, but I just realized that I might not be able to use its monitor with a second computer.
Kind of a deal killer, since I have to have the PC for QuickBooks (the Mac version looks better but doesn't have functionality)
The VNC route might not be feasible, since the PC is a cheap box running Windows XP Home (not Pro) and used ONLY for QuckBooks.
Anyone tried feeding video from a PC into the iMac through S-Video? What is the quality like? Or a VGA to USB/FireWire converter?
Stupid of Apple not to include Video in, since there are enough people who MUST use the odd Windows application, but don't want two monitors/keyboard/mice on their desk. I really don't want to send this thing back!

Is there a way for one to use firewire to get get the video (like remote desktop, that is) from the PC into the iMac, then the mouse/kb control can be accomplished through this:

You can use another router as an 'extender' (I know that this will work seemlessly with AirPort Extemes and AirPort Express's - you'll have to check with your router manufacturer to determine what they recommend for range extenders).

Currently, I want to edit slideshows and burn into IDVD. But I prefer the slideshow preview from iphoto "Book" which can edit more comments and slideshow function. Is it any way to select the slideshow from iphoto "book"? rather than just using the single function from the iphoto slideshow (which is not dynamic enough)... please help

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can create an iDVD slideshow of a book. It's relatively easy. It's described in Old Toad's Tutorial #6 - Creating an iDVD Slideshow From an iPhoto Book.. I create one for every book I buy. A great way for a group of people to view the book at once.

Is there any way to use the Yahoo! Bulk folder as the Mail "Junk" folder?

I've been helping a few people with Yahoo! accounts and they'd like to use the Yahoo! "Bulk Mail" folder as their "Junk" folder so they don't have to select the messages in their Bulk folder in order to delete them with Apple Mail.
Unfortunately, I haven't found a way; you can tell Mail to use the Yahoo! Bulk Mail folder for Junk all day, but it never "takes."

I have several Yahoo! accounts, as well, and have a similar issue. No solution for me.

Is there any way to use the iTunes .itl file or .xml file to see what files I had previously to re-download songs?

I recently had to restore my computer and in the process of backing up my music library, half of my library from the letter 'm' onward was deleted.
I want to see if I could use the existing .itl file or .xml file that was automatically saved by iTunes in the iTunes folder previously (which I backed-up in my external drive) to view my past library.
I tried importing the library by going to File > Library > Import Playlist, but I got an error that said:
"Some of the songs in the "iTunes Music Library.xml" were not imported because they could not be found.
The .itl file was no help either in this case.
IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO?

How did you try to make use of the .itl file? Double-clicking on .itl files doesn't switch libraries but opens whatever is currently the default library. To switch between library files either press and hold down shift as you launch iTunes until prompted to choose or create a library, or swap out one library file with another as described in Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.
There is also a link there to tips on recovering media from your device or account history. You may also be able to undelete media from the drive if the space it occupied has not yet been reused.

OK, so your old iTunes library was on your PC and now the library is on your Mac? Do I have that right? Your iPhone and iPad were auto syncing to the PC and now you connect them to your Mac and it wants to clear out the media?
This is important, do you have in your iTunes library on your new Mac, the media you want now? Or are you trying to move your media by copying what is on the iPhone/iPad to your iTunes?

Is there any way to set the inspector in Pages to default with your personal settings?

Every time I want to use Pages I have to use the inspector to indicate if I want a header and footer or not. That is getting annoying. I would like to be able to set margins and if I want the header and footer or not and then make these the default settings. Is there any way to do this?

It appears to me after tinkering around that I can set a page like I want it and then save it as a template. I did so to a folder in Finder. Now the only way I can automatically bring up "default" settings on a Pages blank document is to go directly to that file in Finder and open it from there, not from Pages itself. Is there any other way to do this?

My client is using an external blue tooth ipad metal cover type keyboard and does not wish to have the radial keyboard / mouse visable or floating on desktop when connecting to vm with iPad using vmware view client v5.1.
i was unable to locate any settings or related toggle key/function combo keystrokes under iPad settings under vmware view client, to affect viewability of the radial keyboard/mouse. And can you kill it from service/process on vm instead of ipad? then dont allow service to restart at startup? What is the name of services that enable the radial virtual keyboard mouse - function to work?

I'm having a very similar issue. Sometimes, when I boot and type in startx (I'm not even a GNOME user--I use dwm and no graphical login manager), I just get a black screen. No mouse cursor, so I think X doesn't even load. It only started with the xserver 1.6 update and the update to that hasn't changed anything. What I've been doing is just rebooting until it loads normally (takes one to three times). Is anyone else having this problem?

Is there ANY way to configure the wired ports on Airport Extreme with 7.6.1 software?

I need to connect a Cisco router to one of the wired ports because I'm creating a home lab with several switches and routers and attached hosts. I need the VERY BASIC ability to set (or even just to SEE) what IP address the AirPort is using/assigning, but with the current AirPort Utility, you apparently can't show the DHCP table for wired connections or set up a static pool of addresses to use or really, to do anything else that is ABSOLUTELY BASIC networking configurations for a router. I don't even know what range of IP addresses the AirPort is using for the wired ports.
I love this device - it works much better than my old Linksys that I replaced a couple years ago, but this is the Apple Nannies taking things too far. Sure, make the products easy to configure and use, but stop taking away the ability for advanced users to actually use the product because all you're doing is ******* off your power users - which are the exact people whose friends always ask for recommendations on what products to buy. I've always recommended Apple products to everyone, but if they're going to engineer everything so that only stupid people can use them, then only stupid people will buy (and recommend) them. (Can you tell I'm annoyed that I've wasted so much time on a completely unnecessary and irrelvant side-issue when I should be already working on my actual work project?)

So, does anyone know how to access the actual configuration of the AirPort Extreme so I can use a static IP address for my Cisco router that's plugged into one of the AirPort's wired ports? That's all I need.

The AirPort assigns IP addresses via DHCP in a range you specify. You may also elect to assign devices their own static IP addresses. That does not involve the Extreme at all, though you may "reserve" those addresses in its DHCP Reservations table.
AirPort Utility > Network > Network Options...
Assigning static IP addresses obviates any need to determine the IP addresses the Extreme assigns.
Update its firmware to version 7.6.3.

Using one monitor/keyboard/mouse with Mini

I'd like to have one of my minis connected to a monitor/keyboard and mouse that would be shared with a Windows systems.
What is the best device I can use to accomplish this? What type of connections should I look for, etc.

For best video performance you should look for a KVM that used DVI outputs although it's not important of you are using VGA display with no DVI support. BGreg's post gives you all the information you need on that score.
Now, another option if you don't already have a display or you are thinking of replacing your display is to go a model that has multiple video inputs (which are easily selectable) and has an in-built USB hub. By doing this you can connect your mini to one video input (hopefuly DVI) and the PC into another (probably VGA) and simply select between them. As for the keyboard and mouse, you plug them into a USB port on the display and all you them have to do is to swap the uplink to whichever computer you want to use.
While not quite as nice as an external KVM solution (having to swap cables whereas on a KVM you push a button) I think you will get better video performance as both computers are directly connected to the display and don't need to go through another device. Additionally it will more than likely be cheaper overall as good KVMs can get quite expensive and you can put that cost into getting a better display. My Dell 2405FPW will work (future tense as my mini still hasn't appeared out from the shipping ether - I think I've upset the shipping Gods in some way) perfectly in this way.

How to use the phone's Mini-Keyboard Input with the 'Textbox'(MIDP2.0)?

Hi. I'm trying to create a textbox(in my own little application) that is compatible with the mini-keyboard input feature.
This problem involved any device that have a built-in "mini-keyboard".
Problem:
I tried the 'Textbox' class from MIDP2.0 but the result, as expected, is like using the phones with no built-in keyboard.
(Forexample if I want to input the character 'C' inthe text box, I need to press number '2' button three times to let it circle through 'A' -> 'B' then 'C'. )
Then I tried entering URLs in the phone's built-in web browser, the result is I can use the mini keyboard to type like a PC keyboard.
Question: How do I implement such textbox that is fully compatible with the built-in mini Keyboard?
I tried browsing through the MIDP2.0 API but it seems the 'Textbox' class there couldn't do it.

The textbox should have input just as any other normal phone input. If not, something strange is going on.
Anyway , there is no use to make your own input method, since every phone has another implementation of this anyway. It would only confuse users.

Is there any way to use the Korg Kaossilator Pro with Garageband 6.0.5?

I'm getting pretty decent at working around with the newest version of Garageband. I've gotten my Akai MPK Mini (usb/midi keyboard) to work by adjusting a few preferences here and there, but for the last week I have been trying and trying to get my Korg Kaossilator Pro to hook up MIDI with Garageband. I understand if the program/software isn't as advanced as Logic or Ableton (be getting those soon!) If anybody could help me it would be MUCH appreciated
P.S. if anybody is having troubles with exporting the AIFF/WAV/MP3 audio files I could give you a bit of help. I have figured out how to correctly export the audio loops and sounds that I have made from my Kaossilator Pro into Garageband! It is quite simple actually and is ALOT easier than you would think. Following the tempo/pitch for your song w/ these WAV/AIFF files is really easy too! I have made almost 4 songs now just using samples and loops from my Kaossilator Pro. I just would like to know if anybody has found out how to use it MIDI w/ Garageband? It would REALLY help me out Thanks!

yeeeeah thats what i've been figuring out for the last 12 hours haha. kinda've a pain but hey it works out. u can still throw some pretty cool effects and what not. Even with MIDI cables running from my kaoss pro into my mac doesn't work. i can transfer the loops I make on my kaoss pro to the editor on my comp, then transfer those files to GB then go from there. It ***** there isn't a way to hook it in and sync it w/ GB so you can hit record then start jamming on the kaoss pro. Thanks for the response though!
