Any way to 'watch' Airport network traffic?

Is there any way of 'watching' the network traffic over our home Airport network through the Airport Admin Utility? Or elsewhere? We're cross platform and my partner's PC refused to accept an access-restricting password (though the Airport was in the same room as the PC, it showed no signal strength), so we had to give up on password protection. I suspect someone in the complex is using our network, because very early in the morning, the activity lights flash like crazy -- even tho' our own computers are off. If I can prove this is so, I can reopen the password protection argument...

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The simplest way to restrict access to your network is to allow only very specific MAC addresses to connect with the base station.
From the Managing Airport Extreme Networks guide from Apple:
"Every AirPort and wireless card has a unique MAC address, sometimes referred to as the AirPort ID. Support for MAC (media access control) address filtering lets administrators set up a list of MAC addresses and restrict access to the network to only those users whose MAC addresses are on the access control list."
That document is available here:
] http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/ManagingAirPort_Extreme_Networksv3.4.pdf
While this is a very basic form of security and is insufficient in and of itself to protect the propietary data transmitted across your network, it is an effective way to keep others from accessing the network.

  • Is there any way to tell Airport to select the strongest network from saved networks?

    I have two routers in my house as both are fairly crap, and essentially I have one router for upstairs and one for downstairs (to be fair, my house is a few hundred years old and all the walls are massively thick granite so perhaps no router would negate this problem). This is a minor issue really, but is there any way to tell Airport, rather than simply having a list of networks to try in preferred order, to check which of the two networks has a stronger wifi signal when the mac is booted up or woken from sleep, and join that one?
    Don't mind doing it manually tbh, just curious as to whether this could be automated.

    Hmm, this is interesting. I actually didn't know this.
    From:
    http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/answers/4-wi-fi-tips-from-former-apple-wi-fi-engi neer
    "Apple devices choose networks by your preferred order. Period. If you have multiple networks of different names your Mac or iPhone will always choose the first in your iCloud-synced "Preferred Networks" list even if this one isn't going to give you the best bandwidth. If you have the network name/SSID the same then it will chose the radio that it predicts will give the best throughput (which isn't always the one with the best signal, but that's an even geekier discussion you can hear in the show). Make all the Wi-Fi networks in your home the same. Your life will be better for it."
    Maybe I've been working on too many PCs over the last 5 years.

    If the TV Show is downloaded on your iPad, you don't need Wi-Fi to watch it.

  • Is there any way to watch vidoes not avaible in your country on youtube using an addon??

    like I said before,
    is there any way to watch vidoes not avaible in your country on youtube using an addon?

    What do you mean nothing.
    If it shows $0.00 then that's nothing, that's zero. If it shows truely nothing then you are not logging in with an account that had store credit. Or not logging in at all.
    Click on your name so the triangle appears, then click on Account for more details.

    The 2630 supports Java. Try this:

  • Any way to maintain airport traffic while lid is closed?

    I'm sort of new to dealing with apple computers and I might just totally be missing something but...
    I'm trying to get my new MBA to maintain airport traffic while the laptop is closed. So that way it can continue downloads while it's closed.
    Am I missing something or is this just not possible?

    Hi,
    I dont think it is possible to close the lid and continue to maintain the airport traffic because once you closed the lid, MBA will go to sleep and stop running all application.
    Cheers.

    I was see streaming of some sports like cricket, football on some websites...all these websites
    are Adobe flash based?
    How can I play them on iPhone 4s?

    Even the makers of Flash are no longer making new versions for mobile devices.  Apple could not give it you if they wanted to.

  • Is there any way to log web traffic information of the users with RV082 router ?

    Dear all,
    I just bought a RV082 router. I can't find any way for logging the web traffic of the users.
    Can it be done with the router ?
    Thanks
    Fabio

    Hello,
    If I am not mistaking the best you can do is to send syslog traffic to a server or locally (to a server being preferred) .
    But you are going to see stuff like this:
    30>Aug 3 22:12:40 2005 gw RGFW-OUT: ACCEPT (TCP 192.168.1.111:2101->212.5.219.46:80 on ppp0) [0,0]
    <30>Aug 3 22:12:40 2005 gw RGFW-OUT: ACCEPT (TCP 192.168.1.111:2102->81.0.235.240:80 on ppp0) [0,0]
    <30>Aug 3 22:12:40 2005 gw RGFW-OUT: ACCEPT (TCP 192.168.1.111:2103->81.0.235.251:80 on ppp0) [0,0]
    <30>Aug 3 22:12:41 2005 gw RGFW-OUT: ACCEPT (TCP 192.168.1.111:2104->212.5.219.46:80 on ppp0) [0,0]
    <30>Aug 3 22:12:41 2005 gw RGFW-OUT: ACCEPT (TCP 192.168.1.111:2105->81.0.235.250:80 on ppp0) [0,0]
    <30>Aug 3 22:12:41 2005 gw RGFW-OUT: ACCEPT (TCP 192.168.1.111:2106->212.5.219.46:80 on ppp0) [0,0]
    You will need an external device to make this happen, Having a proxy server such as Squid would do it for you and not just that but will optimize the newtork :)

  • Is there a way to watch a movie purchased through iTunes from my iPad on my AppleTV?

    If I bought the movie through iTunes while using my iPad, is there any way to watch it on my TV using my AppleTV?

    Yes, indeed there is.
    Ensure that airplay is not disabled on your Apple TV and that both devices are on the same network. Then when playing the movie on your iPad, select the airplay icon in the control bar, tap it, select the Apple TV from the contextual menu that appears. The movie should now stream to your Apple TV.

  • Is there any way to get ipad 2 mirroring (beta ios 5) to work with unicast?  The school won't enable multicast for traffic concerns on a many AP wireless network.

    I have the iPad 2 mirroring working in my classroom with my own personal wireless router and an apple tv 2.  We would like to deploy several iPad 2's to teachers for instruction, all using mirroring.  The school district wireless network available throughout the complex has many access points and has multicasting turned off.  They are afraid to enable it because of traffic concerns - many wireless devices all sending everything to every AP on the district wireless network.  Is there any way to come up with an acceptable solution (unicasting?) that will only route traffic to the devices connected to a single access point on the network (the same one the ipad 2 and apple tv are connected to) without sending it to all the access points on the district wireless network?  Short of every teacher having an independent wireless router in each of their rooms (which could still potentially interfere with the district wireless), I don't currently have a solution.   I've heard the network guys through around terms like multicasting, unicasting, igmp, etc.  I don't want to choke down the district wireless either, but there must be a solution to this.  I could easily see 40 teachers in the complex all using iPad 2s mirroring through apple tvs attached to projectors all going on at the same time, but there might only be 3 or 4 on each access point.

  • HT2497 Airport is not recognizing my wireless network because my wireless network has the same name as another apartment in my builing.  I cannot change the name because my room mate controls it, is there any way I can make it find my wireless network?

    It used to be that the other apartment with the same name didn't have theirs password protected so even though only one or the other would show up, I could always get onto one.  Now, they have password protected theirs and it seems to be that 100% of the time only theirs shows up which I only can tell because it says "invalid password" when I try to connect to the Internet.
    I have asked my room mate to just change the name of the network but she is really slow to do anything about it and I need to be able to get the internet at home and the internet is in her and set up through her computer so I really don't have any way of being the one to just go in and fix it myself.
    Is there any other way to make Airport recognize that there are two different networks with the same way so it will find mine?  I feel like I have tried everything including mannually typing in the name of my network and typing my password and it still just says "invalid password."  I have also double checked that I was typing in the correct password and I am.  My room mate is not having any problems accessing the Internet so I know the problem is not with our connection (she also has a Mac, almost the same model as me, I have a MacBook Pro purchased in 2011).  I am also able to connect to the Internet on my Mac at coffee shops and the library so I know that the problem is not my computer or my wireless connection so I'm pretty sure it is just that Airport is somehow only recognizing one of the two "WLAN" networks
    Any help???!

    Hi - you can do what you want to do with AirPlay from your iPhone - but unfortunately it is not as easy as the people in the Apple store told you - your first problem is that you have a non Apple router - you cannot extend a non Apple router wirelessly with the Express - you can only join the network and connect an ethernet device to it - you can however connect via ethernet and have it create a wireless network of its' own - you can set this up from your iPhone or the XP - but this is a complicated setup and would involve many different discussion areas of this forum - therefore I would suggest that you use your 90 days of support and consult directly with Apple to do this - go to this link - http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
