Any word on a software update?

I've been through 2 Tours from Bell Canada, and both have had the same problem: people on the receiving end of my calls keep complaining that my voice sounds muffled. This doesn't happen on every single call, but it happens enough to seriously hinder my ability to use the phone for business.
Also, on my replacement model, I have the laggy trackball problem.
So my question is: When can we expect a software update to address these issues? I almost feel a little bit like I got had for being an early adopter. I mean, didn't RIM just go through this with the Storm and have to issue a number of software updates to make it useable?
In any event, other than these two problems I love the Tour. However, I didn't buy the phone just to get email... I need to make calls with it!
Give me a software update, RIM!

Well... RIM updates and upgrades OS software all along. Carriers choose to pick one of the realeases, or not.
In the Storm case, Verizon released an upgrade within two weeks, then waited about 6 months for the next.
Guessing when the 9630 upgrade will occur is just that, a guessing game.

  • My Macbook pro is refusing to install any of the recent software updates.  Any suggestions?

I have been trying to install the latest software updates that show up when I search for available updates.  There are 5 including Safari, iTunes, iWork and iPhoto.  I have plenty of memory available.  After the software update downloads, it shows an error message that says it was unable to install the update, but gives no codes or further information.  I have powered down / powered up, tried on different internet connections.  I'm out of ideas.  Any help is much apprectiated!

Since you are running Lion, I would suggest that you reboot while simultaneously holding down the Command - R keys, to boot into the Lion Recovery Partition.  There you can go into its Disk Utilities, highlight your "McIntosh HD" in the left hand column to select it and then run "Repair Disk".  Then run its "Repair Permissions" twice. That may resolve the problem.  If not, then from the Lion Recovery Partition I would recommend doing a reinstall of Lion over your current version to further  up any other code errors on your drive.

  • Is there any way to set Software Update to ignore a particular packages?

If Software Update identifies a new version of something which I don't want to install, is there any way of making it ignore that update when it checks next time.
It's not unusual for minor updates to include no security fixes, no fixes for defects which affect me and no additional functionality. In these cases I'd rather not update but I haven't been able to find anyway to stop Software Update from prompting me to install the same version every time it checks.

    Thank you for the reply.
That menu item just sets Software Update to ignore that particular version does it? I did spot it but the dialog which it opens says "You will no longer be notified of new versions of this update." which is not a very clear message but "new versions" made me think that clicking "OK" would make it ignore all future updates for the component and not just the particular version I want to skip.
Sorry, maybe my original post wasn't very clear that it I just want to skip versions I don't see a need to install, not permanently ignore certain apps/components.

  • Any more news on software update and usage monitor

Sorry to be a pain but is there any fresh OFFICIAL news on when the software update will be available and also when the usage monitor problem will be fixed.
Will there be an announcement either here or by email to everyone?
    Thanks

No, the 'couple of weeks' statement was released on the 13th November, so to the letter that would be next Tuesday. I think people would agree that 'couple of weeks' does not imply a set date, but I would think at the end of next week would be a valid time for people to start shouting 'where is it' if we haven't had an official update.

  • Any Word on a Lion Update?

Just by the looks of the posts in these forums, it is apparent that Apple has some serious issues to address with OS X Lion. One of the major issues appears to be a problem with the video driver and sleep mode, which can cause the iMac to freeze when any video playing, be it Flash or otherwise, is attempted.
I had this happen once - and turned off Sleep and have (knock on wood) not experienced it since.
Another really frustrating issue is the problem with spotty BlueTooth connectivity. Twice now (days apart), my Magic Mouse just ... stopped. I received the graphic on the screen that connectivity was lost, and the system tried to pair with the mouse again, to no avail. I had to resort to plugging in a wired mouse and rebooting the system, unplugging the wired mouse, and the Magic Mouse was operational again. This is not a trivial issue, especially with a system that comes standard with a BlueTooth keyboard and mouse/pad.
Speaking of the wireless keyboard, God help you if you need to start your iMac while holding down the Option Key to choose your boot hard drive - since the keyboard won't be paired on startup, you better have a wired keyboard around or you will be SOL.
Let's hope that Apple gets an update out - and soon!!!

Nope and speuclations here are not welcomed. It'll come when it comes.

  • Any help with the Software Updater

Whenever I start the applications it just hangs, any advice. I know this has been covered previously, but that never helped.
    Thanks in advance

I got the following with Windows XP2 SP2:
nsl_host_process.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point xmlReadFile could not be located in the dynamic link library libxml2.dll.
    OK
and NSU just hung. Sometimes, it didn't give the error, but hung.
Uninstalling and reinstalling NSU didn't help.
According to filemon.exe, NSU tried to load the dll from system32.
I had 507904 byte long libxml2.dll dated 04.06.2004 in system32. I hunted another version of libxml2.dll (1032657 bytes) and put it in
    E:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\Service Layer
    After that, NSU worked.

  • Software update for 40GB owners

Any word of a software update for the 40GB Apple TV owners?

Apple said yesterday there will be one in mid June.

  • Any Word on on Update?!

I have been so excited about upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion - but after reading all these forums and all the problems people are having, I've been scared to go for it!  I have an early 2009 MacPro (8-core) and from what I can tell it will be compatible (except for a few features that I don't care about anyway).
So it's been a few weeks now that ML has been out.  Any word on when an update will be released to address some of these issues people are having?  Trying to decide whether to wait for an update or go ahead and try and see what happens... (After a SuperDuper clone of course!)

Not many people come to a support forum to post how good everything is going.
Oh, there's some regular agent provocateurs who like to come on here and boast that 'everything's fine' after every new upgrade to wind up those suffering problems. I'd name them, but that'd probably be breaking the ToU (they'll probably show themselves in this thread before long anyway).

  • Any news on software update for dock-remote?

Is there any news on a software update to fix the remote troubles we have all had?

Here is a kind fo wish list for Updates for the Universal Dock and Remote:
    1. Menu button functionality for iPod through the remote.
    2. A similar "Front Row" experience for iPod, when connected to a television, which would allow you to access music, picture, or movie menus on the screen. Or, at least replicate the iPod display on your television.
    3. Remote controll functionality when a Universal Dock is connected to your Mac. I do not see why this could not happen. You have an infrared remote and a reciever connected to your Mac, why not take advantage of it? I think that this would be a great way to get Front Row to function on other Macs besides the new iMac. Or at least allow the remote controll to access and controll iTunes.
    4. Firewire for the 5G iPods. This is more of a hardware issue. I do not understand the lack of firewire support, but I won't get into that here. If is not possible place firewire support inside the new iPods becuase of design constraints, then make a new Universal Dock that somehow will allow firewire support to the new iPods.
Sorry, Stephen for this odd post, but I did not know where else to post this.
Is there a place that I may go to make suggestions to Apple?

  • Problems waking up and connecting to internet after MAC Software updates.

My Intel Macbook laptop use to connected to the internet automatically when I turned it on the laptop or woke it up. Now after the last MAC software upgrade this week (which included iTune, iPhoto, MAC 10.4.9 and an Airport upgrade) my PC is having problems connecting to the internet.
It attempts to connect but can't. I end up playing with the settings in Airport internet connections – e.g turning Airport on and off, going to NETWORK -Other and reentering the Network name and wireless security passphrase. Most of the time I have to go into System Preferences – Network and play with these settings e.g. Changing Locations, playing with the network status and eventually, magically it connects and stays connected until the next time I wake up my laptop.
The wireless Macbook laptop is connected to a DLINK Wireless Router (DI-624), using WPA-PSK security. I have tried rebooting both the laptop and the router a number of time and even redid the setting on both the router and laptop.
Is there something else I can check/do??? Can I undo any of the MAC Software updates (thinking about the Airport one)??? I would really like to get back to connecting to the internet automatically.
    Thanks.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Yeah, the 169.254 addy means it isn't getting a DHCP reply, so it's not connected to anything at all.
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show?Network Port Configurations and checked ON?
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of Network Port Configurations.
Yes those files get recreated on reboot, (unless critical pieces of the OS are missing for it's defaults), but you don't have to trash/delete them, you can just drag them to the desktop!
But after hearing the latest I might try...
/Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences... the whole Prefs folder there.
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration... the whole SysConfig folder.
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist
Reboot... of course you dont have to trash them, you can just move them to the desktop to drag back if it doesn't work.

  • The software update collection topic

Software updates is a hot topic and this collection thread covers how it works.
All phone models receive a software update every now and then and we always try to optimize the phone performance and features in every one of them.  But the most common questions are “When will I get the update?” or “When will next update be released?”.
First, to get a better understanding of how creating and launching new software updates works I strongly suggest that you read the articles published on Developer World.
    http://developer.sonymobile.com/2011/12/07/ice-cream-sandwich-from-source-code-release-to-software-u...
    And
    http://developer.sonymobile.com/2013/07/25/explaining-the-software-upgrade-process-and-its-improveme...
These articles explain it all from receiving the source code to when the update finally makes it to your device.
As you can read in the article, all updates needs to pass all approvals and certifications before it can be released for your device.
So unfortunately we here at the forum can’t say exactly when this will happen for your specific device but we always try to make as specific communications as possible when announcing new software update roll outs. Always check the product blog for the latest official information about products and software updates.
    http://blogs.sonymobile.com/
All software updates rolls out gradually over time so it might not hit your device at the same time as we present it. To get the latest information about software update availability for your device you should contact your local support team since the updates are based on region and versions.
    http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/contact-us/contact-info/
There are two ways of updating your phone software.
    1.     Via phone, OTA (Over the Air).
Your phone has a built in application for updating your phone software. This application is called Update Center and can be found in your application drawer or via Settings > About phone > Software update. This application can scan for new software, notify about new software and also install new updates. But note that sometimes Update Center can only notify you about new phone software but not install it. This depends on the update itself and if it can be installed OTA or if the phone needs to be connected to a computer to perform the update. If this is the case you will be informed about that in the notification given to you by the Update Center application.
Update Center will also inform you about the size of a new software update. If it’s a larger update, connecting to a Wi-Fi network is always recommended before downloading the update. This way you can save download data from your network subscription and also download time.
If you don’t have access to any Wi-Fi network and experience problems doing a software update OTA please be aware of that some network operators doesn’t support FOTA (Firmware Over the Air). So if you’re trying to update your phone OTA via mobile networks make sure that your network operator supports FOTA. If yes and you still experience problems downloading the update check if your APN settings have any Proxy details that could block the download. You can check this in the following menu. Settings > More (Wireless & networks) > Mobile networks > APN or Access Point Names > Your Internet APN. Check if any details are set for Proxy and Proxy port. If yes you can try to delete them (temporarily) and save the APN. Now try downloading the update again.
    2.     Via computer
You can use our programs, PC Companion (PC), Update Service (PC) or Bridge for Mac (Mac) to scan, install and repair phone software.
PC Companion is your general managing program for the phone if you’re running on a PC computer.
PC Companion has several other features besides updating software such as backup, sync etc.
Update Service is a simple program for just updating and/or reinstalling your phone software.
Bridge for Mac is the alternative for our Mac users. It’s similar to PC Companion. Bridge for Mac lets you, update the phone software, transfer/sync media files and backup your phone.
If you experience any problems doing a software update via computer, please check the following.
    -       USB ports. If you don’t get any connection with the phone try to connect your USB cable to another USB port on your computer. If you’re using USB 3.0 ports make sure that you have installed the main board manufacturer drivers for them. Still not working please see the USB connection FAQ topic.
    -       Internet connection. If your Internet connection is using a Proxy please check that the Proxy settings are correct in PC Companion by going to Settings for PC Companion in the top right corner > Proxy settings.
    -       Firewall. Please make sure that no firewall blocks Internet communication. Check ignores list or temporarily disable the protection when doing the update.
    -       Anti-Virus. Please check that no security software is blocking the program from running or communicating with the Internet.
If you get a message saying that your phone already has the latest software even if you have seen on the web that a later software version is available, this might not be an error. But as described above, it might not be released for your device just yet. Reasons for this please see beginning of this post.
If you have read the above, tried the tips and still experience any issue please feel free to participate in any of the ongoing discussion topics here on our forum.

    Some things you can try:
    1. See if software update works from another account.
    2. Boot in safe mode.  See if SU works.  If so, reboot normally and try again.
    3. If those don't work maybe you need to delete the software update cache.
        ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate/
Note there are two plists assocated with SU but I don't think deleting them will change anything since there is nothing significant in them.  They are,
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.XXXXXX.plist
where the X's are a sequence of hyphenated upper case leters and digits.

  • Run software update in non-admin account?

I did some searching through past posts, but the most recent one I found was several years old.
Is there any way to run Software Update automatically in a non-admin account?  I run in a non-admin account unless there's some task that really needs admin privileges to complete, for security purposes, but having Software Update not run automatically is rather suboptimal for security.
So, is there any way to get Software Update to check for updates automatically from a non-admin account? (I'm not averse to using the crontab or launchd, if necessary—I've never done it before, but given instructions, I'm sure I could figure it out.
    Thanks in advance!

Did some research on this the other day, to see if i could get Software Update to run in the middle of the night like Windows can do.
Software Update requires Root powers, so when you give it your Admin Password your opening a sudo window of 5 minutes for it to complete it's task.
Software Update doesn't check for updates while in Standard User becuase Standard Users supposedly can't do anything about it anyway and it would be a obvious distraction. "Mommy the computer....!!!"
Apple should have a option in Software update preferences to let certain Standard Users know a Software Update is ready just for the purpose your explaining. I run in Standard as well.
I ran some Software Update commands via the Terminal for a launchd just to see what I could do.
Apprantly one can DOWNLOAD updates automatically with launchd in Admin, but not install them because of the need for sudo.
I just misssed a perfect opoortunity (todays update) to run a launchd to do automatic downloads of Software update, then see how to go about installing them afterwards. So fsck me, I'll have to wait now. (unless i use my other machine! ahhh!!)
Anyway the program you want is this little gem: Lingon
it's on Sourceforge (grab the image)
Ok so that takes care of the Software update downloads (man softwareupdate in Terminal for commands)
    /usr/sbin/softwareupdate --download --all
Will do the automatic downloads, now it's just a script away to let you know ( a nice pop up window) that you have something in your folder where the Software Update just downloaded into.
That's the next question is where that is and how to run it.

  • Software Update can't find server, but internet connection is good

The Software Update function does not work - "Can't connect to Update Server", and Safari will not load any pages - "CAn't connect to server...". However, Network Diagnostics says that I am connected to the internet, as does Firefox - it loads pages just fine! All other computers in our home network, including my G5 Tower, are performing and access the internet just fine.
Also, for the past 24 hours, whenever I try to reply to an e-mail, or create a new one, mail suddenly crashed. It is very reliable in this way; there are no exceptions! The the newest update/change to my configuration was the update of the 10.4.4 system stuff from Apple, followed a few days later by an update for the 15 in G4 Powerbook battery management.
    G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I have had this problem ever since upgrading from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger back in December. It doesn't matter, 10.4 from the DVD, or 10.4.4 upgrade, the problem is the same: Any Apple-based programs don't recognize the connection.
    1) Safari says can't connect to any server.
    2) Software Update says there's no internet connection.
    3) iTunes won't get CD title information from CCDB because it doesn't recognize an internet connection.
    4) E-mail messages that have images linked to websites just show question marks.
    5) Widgets that require an internet connection (weather, etc.) are blank.
I, too, did all the tests with the Apple system and pings and all that, which all showed the internet connection to be fine.
In this condition, I can use Firefox and Netscape browsers (I'm using Firefox to write this), but not Safari, Shiira, or Internet Explorer--those three don't recognize an internet connection.
When I first upgraded to Tiger, Mail would receive messages but wouldn't send them. After going back and forth between Apple Care and Earthlink, finally it got solved by Earthlink having me change all my settings. So now I can send messages, but still can't see linked images.
Now here's an interesting quirk. I have four user logins on my computer. On one of them, Safari's home page has always been our login for our online banking. For some reason, that always connects. I have figured out over the past weeks that if I go to that login first, and log in to my bank's website FIRST, then I can use the Apple programs on my other logins (iTunes, Software Update, Safari, etc.). Go figure.
I've spent hours on the phone with Apple Care with this problem. They claim they've never heard of this issue from anyone else, but I've seen several people post on this discussion board having the same issue. Apple Care still has not been able to resolve this issue, even after many hours on the phone with them.

  • Software Update File directory

Are there any restrictions to storing Software Updates on a separate internal or external hard drive, rather than using the start-up drive?  I'd like to use a different drive with additional capacity, but have run into some problems in the past with certain server services.
If it is OK, any particular permissions required?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Hi Bill!
I have done this very thing with SUS due to an internal SD drive that lacks capacity.  in the SUS service in server admin, under Settings, Store Updates In prompt:
What I did is set up the directory structure I wanted (I kept the original structure, var/db/swupd/), I then checked the permissions on the directories and made sure they were set the same, then copied all the data over.  If you leave the directory empty, I believe all the updates will re-download.  This was the easiest service to change data stores for me.  I also did the same for wiki services, and depending on the updates (nothing significant in a while) I would sometimes have to go in and re-correct permissions on the new larger volume.
So you answered your own question on what the restrictions are: size of data/storage location, and permissions.
