Just wondering if anyone has heard anything about Captivate
4, when it might come out and what bugs will be fixed in it when it
does.

Only Adobe knows for sure and they aren't talking until they
are ready to.
Anything else is either pure speculation or a violation of a

I do not know the answer but if you look through the Add-ons under [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=translation translate] you may find something suitable. There is of course also the well known Google translate [http://translate.google.com/#es|en|choose%20the%20language%20combinations%2C%20and%20can%20handle%20single%20words%0Awith%20some%20odd%20results service]

Did I miss something in the fine print? I installed Lion and and come to find out, I can no longer open any Word documents or Excel spreadsheets as they are no longer supported (being PowerPC apps). Seriously?!?!?!?!! What are my alternatives?

You might find it helpful to "try before you buy" - there is a 30 day free trial offer for Office for Mac 2011, accessible from M's .com website.
You may be able to use this period to open and resave your old documents in a format that enables you to switch instead to using Apple's iWorks apps moving forward.
I initially intended to do something similar, but ended up buying Office as it provided an easier way (for me, at least) to continue working with years worth of old emails, letters, spreadsheets and other documents (from my PC days) without risking damage to their integrity, formatting, etc.

As the other guys have said, don't use AE to render using temporal codecs. Temporal codecs like H264 rely on storing partial frames based on earlier information. AE renders and encodes one frame at a time, so most of the efficiency of a codec like H264 is lost. The result is that you get much lower overall quality from an AE h.264 render than if you were to encode it externally.
Adobe Media Encoder or Quicktime 7 will encode great quality H.264 files.
Also, AME has a lot of convenient features like encoding presets for common web services and devices.

Hi all,
Is there any word on if Apple will officially support W8 using Bootcamp (and not Parrallels etc)?
I assume that it will happen once W8 is officially released in October however I was wondering if anyone has any official word.
Otherwise, if a clean install of the Win 8 RTM is already able to be done via bootcamp can someone point me to some instructions (the only reason I dont want to do it myself is because all the drivers from BC are for Win 7)

Apple will support it when Windows 8 is released. You can install Windows 8 at your risk, because Boot Camp doesn't support it now

I'm in the same boat: new to OS X and Mac, and in the middle of a book. I switched because I heard about the the ease of using Mac, but so far, for me, it's been a nightmare. I bought 2011 Office Mac and hate everything about it, the most recent being the inability to open or cut or paste any of my original word files. I understand that this could have easily been done with earlier versions, but not Mountain Lion (which I learned is what OSX is.) Since I work with language, I am amazed at the assumptions of the Apple community. It helps to use common language and explain even the basics.
So all the helpful hints to use the latest version of Office Mac are to no avail. Now what?

Any word on a replacement for mavericks

I'm wondering if anyone has heard any word about a replacement for Mavericks. Even after this long using it I still think it is a really poor os. If it were not such a chore I woud revert back to Mountain lion or Snow Leopard.

No one here has any idea of when Apple will release the next version of OS X.
I have found Mavericks to be significatantly better then its preciessors.
Maybe if you tell us why you think Mavericks is worst, we might be able to help you.

Any Word on on Update?!

I have been so excited about upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion - but after reading all these forums and all the problems people are having, I've been scared to go for it! I have an early 2009 MacPro (8-core) and from what I can tell it will be compatible (except for a few features that I don't care about anyway).
So it's been a few weeks now that ML has been out. Any word on when an update will be released to address some of these issues people are having? Trying to decide whether to wait for an update or go ahead and try and see what happens... (After a SuperDuper clone of course!)

Not many people come to a support forum to post how good everything is going.
Oh, there's some regular agent provocateurs who like to come on here and boast that 'everything's fine' after every new upgrade to wind up those suffering problems. I'd name them, but that'd probably be breaking the ToU (they'll probably show themselves in this thread before long anyway).

When you ''reset'' keyword.url, you blank the entry. Firefox doesn't know what to do with the keyword you've typed in, so it adds www. to the front, and tacks .com to the end and takes you www.test.com.

Every once in a while a rogue search engine wrecks my browser, and I end up scrambling for this very answer. I hope the devs will create an easier fix for future versions.

How do you stop spell checking any "word" that has an underscore in it.

I send lots of email that reference code. Either with snipits, or mentioning variable names or file names etc.
So I would I disable any spell check of any word that has an underscore character as part of it. For example dont_check_this_var.
I specifically am concerned about settings in Outlook

Right click on the word, and select "Ignore all".
To disable spellcheck,
Click the File tab, and then click Options.
Click Mail , and then click Editor Options.
Click to clear the Check spelling as you type check box.
Click to clear the Mark grammar as you type check box.

Regex: for any word, find word+s and y/ies

Hi all
This sounds pretty simple, but I'm trying to create a regular expression whereby, for any word, the matcher will find all instances of that word OR it's plural.
Now, if it were just adding +s, I know I could do Pattern.compile("\b\Q" + word + "\Es?\b");

At first I thought of making two cases in the pattern, one as above, and one were the last letter is subtracted and you check for (y|ies). HOWEVER, without first knowing if the word ends in a "y", it could take "do" and change it into "dies", and then mistakenly find it.
Of course, I COULD have a whole bunch possible patterns seperated by a bunch of IF-THENs... "if it ends in a y, Pattern pattern = Patern.compile(...."
... but this doesn't seem very elegant.
So, how can I create a pattern that will check for "ies" ONLY if the word ends in "y" (and +"es" if it ends in an "s" and so on...)?

You'll also need a stronger definition of plural. I don't know how in-depth you need this to be, but some words are pluralized by adding "es" or "ues", some by changing "us" to "ii", etc. I really can't see how using regex is going to make this easier.

Apparently, it's broken. If you want to report this issue to Apple's engineering, send a bug report or an enhancement request via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, register as an Apple Developer—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report or enhancement request. You'll get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

That's consistent with trouble with the Segoe UI fonts on your system.

You don't tell us what version of Office for Mac you presently have, but I'm guessing it might be Office for Mac 2004. If so, in addition to the suggestion to download OpenOffice you can purchase the most recent version of Office for Mac 2011 directly from MS <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/buy>. You can also purchase Pages productivity suite from the Mac App Store <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pages/id409201541?mt=12>.
