Any workarounds for the X11 apps segmentation faults on intel with 10.4.8 ?

Hi,
We've an X11 application, compiled for PPC, which runs fine with a G5 iMac on 10.4.8. However, it crashes with a segmentation fault on a MacBook Pro with 10.4.8 (running through Rosetta).
Searching the web, we found that this seems to be a widespread problem for X11 apps running on Intel Macs with 10.4.8.
Has this been submitted as an important bug to Apple?
Are there any workarounds for it?
Is the problem specific to PPC-only builds, or does it also happen with Universal builds?

A powerpc-binary program running under Rosetta can only load powerpc-binary modules...can't cross in and out of emulation within a single process. Perhaps your program is trying to load a module from X11 that is present as an intel-only binary? Rosetta is certainly no future-looking cure-all, just a stop-gap to allow one to keep using older stuff, and it is kinda fragile sometimes. If your target audience is both powerpc and intel machines, compile as a universal binary so it's native for everyone.

The problem here is the legacy flash document size constraint of 2880 x 2880 pixels. Why is this limitation still in place? Most screen have landscape orientation and we have this square constraint that turns out to be a waste if you are developing for larger screen displays and anything that is 4:3 or 16:9. Something does not add up here. What if someone needs to make a dual wide screen HD show that measured 3840 x 1080 pixels? We can do setup documents at 3840 x 1080 pixels in PowerPoint, PDF, Silverlight (at least this is what I have read regarding Silverlight), but not in Flash. Why not?
If Flash is a platform… then it needs to spread its wings a bit and embrace all the potential uses that are non-web. Flash represents multimedia delivery to millions, but shackling it to the 2880 x 2880 pixel limitation for a document size is problem for many people now and looming for those working toward have the flash engine as a core component in media delivery. At least give us a dual Wide screen monitor resolution of 3840 x 1080 pixels instead of a square of 2880 x 2880 pixels – which no one really uses (at least I have not seen any sqaure screens lately). Hey, if Adobe decided to shave off on the unused pixels from the 2880 height (2880 – 1080 = 1800) of the format you get an additional 1800 pixels that could applied where it is needed – to the width of the document size… giving us a 4680 x 1080 pixel document. This could then be used for immersive simulation, game situations, and real-world wide-screen experiences.

I just signed up for FIOS and am not experiencing your problem (had enough other ones instead).
Go to mail preferences ~ click on a mail account ~ click on the advanced tab. The only settings that worked for me were: port 110 SSL OFF, authentication: Authenticated POP (APOP). If I remember correctly when I first set this up another window opened and I typed in my password and never had to do that again.

Is there any workaround for the brother driver 2.8 update which seems to remove duplexing

It seems the brother printer 2.8 update of 12/14 has removed the ability to print in a duplex mode - i.e. both sides of a sheet. Printing proceeds in the usual fashion and the printer goes through the mechanics to print both sides, but doesn't and outputs the remainder on a second sheet. It is definitely the update as I have another machine which I, thankfully, did not update and that works fine with the same printer.
I tried to go back in Time Machine, but it isn't obvious what to restore and, so far, my attempts to do haven't been successful.

After a bit of experimenting it turns out that somehow the update either defaults to a CUPS definition that causes this weird behavior or the old profile tigether with the update is problematic. It I download the current drivers at Brother and change to Brother HL-5250DN BR-Script 3 all is well.

Motion 2.0 was paired with FCP 5. Final Cut Studio 1 included both. When Apple switched to Intel processors, they released FCP 5.1 and Motion 2.1 as an Intel compatible "cross grade". FCS2 had FCP 6 and Motion 3. FCS3 is Motion 4 and FCP 7.

Any Fix For iPhone 4S Apps Authorization

Since purchasing the 4S third party apps have crashed regularly. The apps appear to be loaded in the phone, but not authorized - so rather than open the app, the icon only flickers when pressed. Usually this happens to an odd few of the apps I have loaded, but now it is all third party apps. Every time this problem has occured immediately after charging the phone on a wall socket for an extended period (e.g. overnight), making me wonder if extended charging overloads some circuitry.
I have previously fixed this by completely restoring the phone from a back-up and re-installing everything, a tedious process, only to have the same problem later recur. I have also deleted the affected third party apps individually and re-installed them, again only to have the problem recur. Thankfully in these cases my user info and settings were retained. This time it is not a few of the third party apps but all of them.
This problem began after connecting the phone to my Mac and opening iTunes. iTunes continually now says that my Mac is not authorized, but when I choose Store > Authorize This Computer the system tells me I am already authorized. For some reason though iTunes is not recognizing the authorization, and is passing that lack of recognition to the iPhone. This then means the apps won't work.
This continual frustration has made me question my purchase. I would love to hear ideas about an authorization fix if anyone has any. For the record it is a 14GB 4S with only 26 third-party apps loaded. The desktop is a MacPro running OS 10.6.8 and iTunes 10. Thought: might this be a compatibility issue between 10.6.8 and iOS5? WiFi sync is not turned on, and pc is normally powered down at night when charging the phone.

When the issue was just a few third party apps I figured it was the apps; when the issue became all third party apps I knew the root of the problem was with Apple. Apple normally focuses strongly on user experience; I would have expected an issue that has literally frustrated users for years to have been addressed long ago. Maybe increasing Android competition will prompt Apple to look at such issues more closely.

All Apple iTunes Store accounts must have a valid form of payment set up. Even for free apps and updates. The Payment Declined message comes from your card issuer or payment source; Apple is just a pass-through for the message. You need to find out why your issuer is declining your card.

Define working perfectly.
Just because it's using an index doesn't mean it's efficient.
One proper solution here is to create a function-based index to reverse the string.
You could use the undocumented, unsupported REVERSE function to test but as a proper implementation you should probably implement your own reversing function.
That way, instead of a leading wildcard, you end up with a trailing wildcard and you can use an appropriate index when suitable.
e.g. something like
CREATE INDEX i1 ON t1 (REVERSE(col1));
SELECT *
FROM t1
WHERE REVERSE(col1) LIKE REVERSE('%Value');

I've read that the Notes app with Mountain Lion will be available for OS X as well, and I was wondering if there will be any significant updates to the Notes app coming in iOS 6?
The Notes app in Mountain Lion supports, as far as I know, text formatting, images and attachments. The Notes app in iOS 5 does not have any of these features, yet still it is claimed that the OS X client will sync with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This means that there must be some rather significant updates coming for the Notes app in iOS 6 to match up with the features of its Mac counterpart. Still, no updates to the Notes app are listed in any of the iOS 6 feature lists I've seen so far.
I'm looking for a good note taking app for OS X and iOS. I don't like how Springpad works, neither did Evernote work out for me, it's just too complex - I like Simplenote a lot though, it's just that its approach is too radical in my opinion. I was thinking that the Mountain Lion Notes app might be a good alternative because it combines simplicity with rich text formatting and attachments. I kind of hate the skeuomorphic user interface though.

Airport Extreme- anybody have a workaround for the lack of Wake on LAN ?

I've read in a number of places that the Airport Extreme (and other Apple routers) don't allow for the standard Wake on LAN packet to wake a sleeping Mac.

Microphone doesn't work for the phone app, but does for skype/heytell.

So, my iphone4 randomly decided it would stop using the microphone when I made calls. I've tried using headsets/speaker mode but that doesnt change the fact the mic makes a single click sound and then I cannot be heard. I've installed the latest firmware (4.3.3) and I've done a full factory restore/resync. Nothing works. It's bizarre that this only happens with the actual phone app though, as I can make calls with skype or be heard on heytell just fine and perfectly clearly. In fact, any app that uses the mic works, except for the phone app....

Better workaround for the whine problem

I have discovered a workaround for the commonly reported electronic whine in the MacBook Pro.
As most will know, if you open PhotoBooth and run it in the background it will get rid of the whine. I also noticed that the same worked in ANY application that uses the iSight.
So, looking around the Apple website for widgets I stumbled across this . . . .

It solves the problem!!!!! Runs in the background, in the Dashboard, takes up no resources also!!

Didn't read that whole thread on the issue did you?
It also kills your battery life.
The issue I don't believe is related to the CPU directly but is related to the overall power drain on the system..it seems anything that causes the system to use more power 'solves' the problem.
