Any Worry About Adobe Having Our RAW Files?

New CC member (took me forever to decide to finally give up on my old adobe account and start a new one, because they couldn't figure out how to sign me up with my existing account).
Just as I'm about to start uploading my files to Adobe I'm wondering: am I going to someday regret uploading all my RAW files to Adobe? I know it would be ultimately destructive to their business model to do anything obviously nefarious to their customers' data, but what I'm worried about is that they've been hacked (though hackers are probably more interested in my credit card info than huge raw files) and also the creepiness many content companies are up to lately (Facebook, looking at you).
Is it that far off in the future that adobe for example start mining our photos for information about us, what brands we use, where we go, what we shoot photos of - and possibly use this or sell this info to third parties?
The cloud arrangement aside, I would be more than a little wary of carrying a 10TB drive of all my life's photography work into Adobe headquarters and handing it over to them for safe keeping.
Does anyone else have this concern?

Syncing is simply keeping a collection of files on your I-pad/Lightroom Mobile, in sync with the desktop versions - your machine to your machine, across the internet: I suppose this would be via Lr's servers, but the idea is simply to give you mobility, and the ability to use Lr away from your desktop for a given session or shoot - or to wirelessly move "Smart Preview" versions of a collection, to your mobile device.
I don't use an I-Pad/Pod/Phone or Lr Mobile, but that's the basic premise: it's not really intended to be a way to have mobile access to your entire accumulation of images - especially when we're getting into multiple tb's worth of images: besides, your I-Pad hasn't got the capacity for that.
That said, I suppose with a small "portfolio" it'd be doable.
Anyway, pretty good explanation here:
"In order to use LRM, you login with LRD and enable sync, then set specific Collections to sync. It automatically generates the necessary raw proxy images, though it doesn't indicate within LRD that there's a Smart Preview in the usual spot beneath the histogram. As long as you're connected to a network, the selected Collections and any operations you perform on the images within are automatically synced between the two. If you want to be able to work on images while disconnected from the network, you have to enable offline editing; otherwise, it dynamically downloads each image as you open it and caches it temporarily
The images are small enough that you don't have to wait inordinately long for them to load, but as a group they're big enough that they can take up a lot of space on a limited-capacity iPad. (Pity that amazing compression algorithm from HBO's "Silicon Valley" doesn't really exist.) You'll probably want to come up with a syncing strategy to manage your storage. The syncing itself happens pretty quickly and seamlessly, at least over Wi-Fi, though there is a noticeable pause before the interface becomes available as you wait for the proxy to download when working online. And you can work on already-downloaded images while it continues to sync.
You can only work with a single catalog at a time. (As a refresher, Lightroom images are mapped in databases called catalogs, in which which you can create collections, and Lightroom only supports a single open catalog.) However, the app will attempt to sync with whatever open catalog you're logged into and will offer to switch to that catalog. So, for instance, if you're working with the images from a machine at the office, then go home and log on with a different machine, you can switch to syncing with that catalog. To do so wipes the previously synced catalog from your device. It can also import photos from your camera roll and automatically sync them back to the desktop".
Lightroom Mobile is an in-house alternative to Photosmith, really - so what applies to Photosmith, in terms of purpose and usage seems broadly to apply to Lr Mobile (Photosmith being more feature rich).

Is there a way to import Raw files into LR catalog ..including..any edits performed in an external raw file editor such as Capture One?
I can import the Raw file successfully but cannot see any edits that were applied in Capture One. Im assuming no but just checking.

Your assumption is correct, Capture One, Lightroom and other third party raw processors have their own proprietary processes and profiles for rendering the raw data.
They do not make permanent changes to the raw data and store the changes to an .xmp file or to a catalog file like Lightroom.

• Teacher switching to Mac from PC--but worried about difficulty transferring Microsoft Office files?

Hey everyone,
I'm a high school English teacher, and recently my PC at home died after only two years.  I'm really wanting to switch over to Apple products, but I'm not sure about the combination of machines to buy and I'm concerned about how easily my 3,000+ Microsoft Office-based files I use every day at work will be transferred to a Mac. I'd really appreciate any advice you may have about your experience using both types of machines!
Issue #1:  The first thing I'm unsure about is what combination of machines to buy from Apple. I absolutely am getting an iPad, for the portability and because I love my Iphone but want a larger interface on which to use my educational apps.  However, I'm really torn between getting a Mac Pro desktop or the much smaller, much more expensive, but much more portable Macbook Pro laptop.  My husband is a gamer (he loves Starcraft!) and his only criteria for our new machine is that it will play his games.  Both the Mac Pro and Macbook Pro have the capabilities to play the graphics-heavy game, but I don't know if I want to go back to a desktop computer after having the easy of a laptop at home for two years.  Any profession swear one way or the other?  Please give me your reasons for your preference!  I'd love to hear.
Issue #2:  The other thing I'm nervous about is transferring all of the 3,000+ files from my school PC to a Macbook or Mac so I can work on them at home and not have to haul the PC to and from school. I've transferred what I could to Google Drive, but I'm not keen on switch over to Drive completely because it doesn't give me the flexibility that working with Word does.  I'd like to know how the transition from PC to Mac is when it comes to Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel files, since I'll be creating them on the PC at school and continuing work on the Macbook or Mac Pro at home.  Is it difficult transition?  Please let me know...again, I appreciate your responses.
Thanks very much,
Mrs. Tripp

I think you should purchase the MacBook Pro, because as you stated you are accustomed to using a laptop, or if you would like a desk-top consider the iMac over the Mac Pro (To much for your needs).  Both computers can handle your requirements regarding the MS Office files you would need to purchase the Mac version of MS Office.
Starcraft will work on a Mac, another option you have with a Mac, it is possible to run Windows via BootCamp or a software solution like Parallels Desktop and VMWare.
This link will help you with the switch to Mac, http://www.apple.com/support/macbasics/

• Do I need to worry about Adobe Application Support Folder?

Running Photoshop CS5 standard on Mac (snow leopard) on top of Photoshop CS4.  Ran into some problems with Adobe Bridge and thinking there might be a conflict between the two Photoshop versions I uninstalled Photoshop CS4 (apparently not smart).  Now on launching Photoshop CS5 a window appears with warning something like: missing files in Adobe Application Support Folder, use Photoshop installer to re-install PhotoshopCS5. Tech support tells me to deactivate Photoshop CS5 then uninstall it and reinstall from the Web where I downloaded it in the first place.
Questions:  Should I care about this at all?  How about reinstalling Photoshop CS4 (I have the disc)?  Can I just download the Adobe Application Support Folder?
I undated CS5 just now but it didn't fix the "problem".

That is very sound advice.  Do it.
luchiangelo wrote:

Yes, unless you don't want to run any Adobe applications any more.
luchiangelo wrote:

It probably won't even let you install CS4 over CS5.  You would have to uninstall CS5 first.

Nope; there's nowhere you could "download it" from.
Just follow the advice of Tech Support.

• Adobe Bridge CS6 Raw files not previewing.

I recently upgraded my iMac from a 2007 to a mid 2011 Mac ...the first running fine with CS5...the newer iMac with CS6 and 32GB ram.  I can't seem to get Bridge in CS6 on the new machine to preview D800 Raw Nef files.  Is there something that I need
to do when importing to help the process?  What's strange is that the first files in a folder import fine and preview fine.  I downloaded 300 or so images from a 32GB card.  The first 150 or so worked fine.  The rest just don't preview at all.  Help!

Did you use a card reader for the download?
Are all the 300 files relatively the same size?
Did you ues Tools/cache/purge and rebuild the folder cache?

Are you using photoshop elements 12 or 13?
Which operating system are you using?
If your using pse 12, did you try Help>Updates from within pse 12 to get camera raw 8.5?

The download is a simple download, but if you put it in the wrong file, you can REALLY mess up your CS4 capabilites. which is why I specifically wanted to help you and walk you thru it step by step.
I hope I didn't leave anything out. Like I said, easier to tell someone on the phone so I can hear what it is you are looking at on your system so I can walk u thru it  is all.

• Adobe XMP Files not deleted with Raw Files in ACR

I am using Photoshop CS3 on a Windows XP platform. My camera raw files are mostly kept on a Windows 2003 file server, which has a gigabit connection to my workstation. However, I have the same problems when using PS CS3 on my Windows XP laptop.
I take many hundreds of 'technical' photographs using an Olympus E1 and Canon G9 cameras. I usually bracket the exposures on the E1, specially when photographing white painted yachts, and then rate and select the images that I want in ACR 4.1.1. Unwanted images are deleted at this time.
The problem I am having is that the associated *.xmp files are not always deleted with the camera raw files, with the result that I now have literally thousands of these 'orphaned' files cluttering up the server. The only options I have are to delete the files manually, which is a pain, or to leave them on the server, wasting unnecessary space.
I have the same issue with Canon and Nikon raw files, so this problem is not specific to Olympus files.
This is a long standing problem, and I would be grateful if anyone has any answers?
If any Adobe programmers are watching, it would be handy if you could provide a simple utility to delete orphaned *.xmp files, or at least compress them into some kind of archive.
Thanks,
Nigel.
As far as Photoshop and ACR go, ALL raw files are treated as read-only.
Your original raw files remain untouched, no matter what you do to them.
Any adjustments you make to a raw file are kept only as metadata (flags, if you will) in that XMP side-car file. Every time you want to re-open that raw image file, ACR will reach for the XMP file and apply the adjustments automatically, transparently.
That is not quite correct. Camera RAW files can be permanently deleted from within Adobe Camera Raw. The problem with ACR 4.1 to 4.4 4 was that the XMP files were left behind. This now seems to have been rectified in the latest version (ACR 4.5).
Thank you Adobe!

• Filter in adobe bridge to only select Raw files for DNG conversion

Here's my problem - I have a new DMC TZ70 camera and Lightroom 5.7 doesn't recognise the .RW2 files. I would need to buy LR6! Perhaps later.
So I thought I will import via bridge and convert to DNG.
So I open bridge and select the camera - fine - BUT there are files for the Raw images, the same number of JPEGs and some .bdm, .TDT etc files. (e.g. 3 raw + 7 others).
I can set up a filter to view only the Raw files when I see what files are there in the card folder in Bridge but when I select "get photos from camera" I can either select them all OR deselect and then I need to MANUALLY select the raw files. There doesn't seem to be a way of setting up a filter in the Downloader screen so that Bridge only selects the Raw files for conversion.
If I let it select all, Bridge converts the RW2 files to DNG but also brings in the jpgs and other files. I can delete these afterwards but this seems an inefficient way to do it.
Is there any way to manually select the raw files in the photo downloader screen?
Advice please, thanks, Mel

Not sure I follow completely, Mel, but Bridge allows you  to View > Sort > Type... which would allow you, after sorting, to click on the first image with a specific extension, then hold down the Shift key to select the last in  the series and  handle them independent of the other files presented.

• I'm having issues importing raw files into LR 2.6.

Hi All.
So here's the issue. I have about 1300 images that I'd like to import into LR from my USB Exteral Hard Drive. In the past, I had no issues. but with this one, it seems that I'm limited. I tired to import all 1300 and nothing would happen when i hit import. So then I started to import half of that and it worked.. So I backed out and added in about 10 more.. worked fine, backed out and imported 10 more and it wouldn't work.
I have enough HD space, at least 30Gbs free. The folder size of the images is 11gbs. Is there a setting that limits the amount that I can upload?
Thanks soo much!

Thanks Hal for getting back to me..
Yes, that's what I did..
So I tried two things.. a different set of about 2k images.. raw files.. and it wouldn't work. So that ruled out a corrupt file in my current set.
I went back to the current batch where I was able to import file 1-1060 with no issues. I then chose files 1061-1300 and that worked fine. So that ruled out a corrupt file from 1-1300.
Is is possible to do Two separate import jobs so that i will be able to see all of them when I go to post process? I have never had to do two sep import jobs before so not sure if this is an option.
Thank you very much

• Aperture 3 RAW Files

I've been using Aperture 3 since it first came out.  I shoot using a Nikon D90 using RAW+Fine setting.  I always import the files into Aperture as RAW-JPEG pairs using RAW as the master file.  Although I have imported the files and have applied an effect/preset upon import, lately I've been importing the files without any effect added.  As I watch the import proceed, I initially see the thumbnail previews, which display very quickly.  I can then watch the processing and see the images change.  I'm assuming new previews are being generated by Aperture using the default RAW settings for the D90.  Am I correct about this?  When the processing is complete I can view a RAW image to which no other adjustments have been made other than the default RAW settings.  However, I can switch between two "versions" of thie RAW file my hitting the M key to view the original file.  Is this right?  Why is there a difference between an original and the RAW file at this point? I didn't think there would be, since I have not made any additional adjustments to the imported RAW file.  I'm a little confused exaclty what Aperture is displaying at this point.  I thought I understood this....
Thanks for any insight.

However, I can switch between two "versions" of thie RAW file my hitting the M key to view the original file.  Is this right?  Why is there a difference between an original and the RAW file at this point?
Have you applied any settings in the Raw fine tuning brick? There may a camera default be set.

• Why won't camera raw v4.6.0 open a Nikon D3s raw file?

I have a new-used Nikon D3s and Photoshop CS3 extended. I am using plug in camera raw version 4.6.0. I can see the raw file in bridge. When I double click the thumbnail photo it goes to a window in Ps that says, "Could not complete your request becasue it is not the right kind of document."
Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

You should know that the rendering, capabilities and performance of the current 7.x and 8.x versions of ACR are so far superior to their predecessors, that you will be leaving a lot of image quality on the table if you choose not to upgrade.
Some of us even found ourselves re-converting and re-editing some of our raw files that had been edited in previous versions of ACR, and even re-considering working on some that we had rejected because we deemed the dynamic range to be too extreme to render adequately.
Incidentally, what Bridge is showing you is the JPEG preview embedded in the raw file by the camera, not an ACR-rendition of the raw NEF file, so that has nothing to do  with what the image will look like in ACR one converted.

• Why does Aperture duplicate my raw files?

I downloaded the Aperture demo a week and a half ago and started working on some photos which were on my hard drive. There was an enclosing folder with the name NAfricaSahara, and then within that folder 22 folders organized by date. There were about 3200 photos altogether.
Now after working with about half of the raw files in Aperture, I have found that most of the raw files have been duplicated so that they are now loose in the NAfricaSahara folder as well as within the 22 date folders. This includes files I have worked on as well as files I have not worked on. Is this normal behavior for Aperture? I put one of the duplicate files in the trash (the original still was within its original date folder) and it disappeared from the Aperture window.
How do I prevent this from happening? The duplicates are really eating up a lot of my disk space.

No, I haven't copied versions. What I did was import the NAfricaSahara folder into Aperture. It contained subfolders by date of download to my Epson 4000 digital wallet. The subfolders also came into Aperture as Albums.
I then moved some of the photos by selecting them and creating new albums (in cases where I had downloaded to the Epson less than daily) so that there was a album for each day.
What I see in the Finder now are all the original folders I set up along with their contents. But all the individual files are now ALSO in the NAfrica Sahara folder (not in any subfolder), as well as in their original sub-folders.
I don't want all these duplicates, but when I try to trash one, it disappears from Aperture.

• Aperture 3.4.1 changes the colors of my previously processed RAW files!

I am revisiting some projects that I worked on in the last couple of months and am assembling a portfolio. When I was trying to choose my favorites I noticed in disbelief that some of my carefully editited and color graded photos looked great in the preview (as I remembered them) but once the "loading" sign disappeared turned horrible with hightlights and different colors!
Mind you, I am not talking about the handling of RAW files after an import. It happens months after import and post-processing has happened and was behaing beautifully. Basically 2000 photos are screwed up this way and I'd have to painfully recreate the raw files by the (still existing) proper previews/thumbnails???
I am thoroughly confused and it would be great if someone could give me some pointers to the dilemma (or even confirm a bug in that regard)
Thanks, Louis

Nah, "Highlight Priority Mode" was switched off.
Here's the examples:
1. This is my finished picture. The information is still avaliable in the preview. So this is what I wanted it to look like and how I remembered it.
http://cl.ly/image/3I2D0V1L2O0Q
2. This is how Aperture makes it look now!!!
http://cl.ly/image/3B0o0a0r051g
3. This is what it looks like when I make a copy from the original and then stamp the old settings onto it.
http://cl.ly/image/1g0w0u152t3i
Go figure. It's just random and did I mentioned that I am deeply frustrated with an otherwise excellent program? :-)
If this is bound to happen with our pictures, how can we reliably work with this? I have paying clients who come back to me months and years after and need to have access to their stock of photos.
