Anybody know of a good, free DVD ripping application?

I'm looking to rip some of my DVD's onto my MacBook Pro and then transferring them via USB over to my Microsoft Surface.  Any suggestions for a free app?

  • Anybody know there have the free cloud express we can get

    Hi,
Anybody know there have the free cloud express we can get now?

    Hello
I am not sure what you mean, but assume you are talking about Cloud Cruiser Express?
If this is the case, then the Cloud Cruiser Express extension is included in the WAP installation. If you installed WAP previously without the extension, it can be added by running the Web Platform Installer.
Once that is completed, you need to deploy the backend of Cloud Cruiser Express (on a separate Virtual Machine) and integrate it with WAP.
For more information, I suggest you request access to the Cloud Cruiser documentation web site: http://docs.cloudcruiser.com/

  • Does anybody know of a good flash book?

Hello, I'm very new to flash, and wanted to know if any of
you knew of a good tutorial/referance book for FLASH CS4 that I
could use to help teach myself flash.
    Thanks!

Flash is one of the most versatile tools I know. You can use
    Flash for
everything from TV cartoons (no programming at all), to
    custom slideshows,
banners, and other Web eye candy (perhaps some programming),
    to games, music
players, video players, and applications (potentially heavy
    programming).
This means you can focus on quite a variety of disciplines,
    so for
anyone to recommend a book, it will probably help to hear
    more about the
projects you're interested in pursuing. There are books
    specifically on
animation (cartoon or otherwise), on illustration, on making
    applications,
on demoing (faking) applications, on programming in general,
    and even on
extending the capabilities of the authoring tool.
    If you're interested in a good general-purpose reference --
    something to
give you a broad sense of the basics -- I'll go ahead and
    mention the
friends of ED title I just co-authored with my buddy Tom
    Green (not *that*
Tom Green, the other one). It's called "Foundation Flash CS4
    for
Designers," and this new edition is nearly 700 pages. We
    cover the work
space, the various drawing tools, text, audio, video, two
    chapters on
animation, CSS, XML, the UI components, and more.
    http://www.FoundationFlashCS4.com/
    There's also a CS3 version, if you're using CS3:
    http://www.FoundationFlashCS3.com/
Both of those websites link to the publisher, where you can
    read sample
chapters, and Amazon.com sells both for around $25 apiece,
    which is pretty
cheap. There aren't any reviews yet for the CS4 edition, but
    the reviews
for our CS3 book are generally really good.

  • Anybody know of any good photo printers that will take card stock?

I work for a small print shop. We have a high end production color copier. But it doesn't produce "photo" quality prints. It's a color copier after all. What I'm looking for is a small desktop size probably color printer (probably inkjet) that will produce photo quality prints. The catch is, I'd like to be able to print on cardstock. 80# to be more accurate. Is there anything like that out there?
Its just that I want to be able to provide "photo quality" prints to our customers instead of the "kind of photo quality" that comes off of our copier. Thoughts? Ideas?

All decent ink-jet photo printers are designed to work with branded papers and branded ink cartridges, via branded drivers. These work together as a system, for best and most predictable results. I'd just call up a local printer sales outfit and ask if they have anything that will print on 80 lb. cover. If they have one, go see samples, and get materials prices, because the paper and ink isn't usually cheap, and refilled/off-brand ink and paper typically doesn't get you where you want to go, quality-wise.
Alternately, get an Epson or a Cannon or whatever (which print on less-than-80-lb cover), and also invest in a dry-mount press, for the "card" part of your adventure.
    Good luck.

  • Does anybody know of a good microphone?

I have had a microphone for quite some time, but I want to upgrade. I play the saxophone, but a microphone that records well "all over" is what I'm looking for.
    Any suggestions ?

Realistically, you'd be better of splitting your budget into 2 and buying 2 different mics. One mic simply will not cover all of your needs.
    My suggestions:
Shure SM57: Works great on a lot of sources, including horns.
Studio Projects C1: It's a budget large diaphram condensor mic that'll be better for vocals, acoustic instruments and even as a room mic for your horns. Just be sure you have phantom power (48V) on your digital interface.

  • Anyone know a good, free video converter for a Mac?

These boards have gotten very PC centric. Anyone know of a good free ipod video converter?
    Thanks!

Anyone know of a good free ipod video converter?
In the "free" category I would recommend:
MoviesForMyPod -- simple non-muxed QT file conversions
iSquint -- handles AVI and MPEG1 formats in addition to non-muxed QT file conversions
MPEG StreamClip -- Muxed (MPEG1, MPEG2, VOB), as well as normal QT file types and includes limited but nice editing features. 2-pass H.264 mode is a bit loose but I would recommend it for any experienced user
HandBrake -- already recommended by previous responder, this application is limited to DVDs, DVD images, and VIDEO_TS (VOB) files and has a few minor "bugs" which may catch the careless user off guard, but is generally a quite functional program.

  • Anybody know any Good PCI Fans I can buy?

    Hello All,
Does anybody know of any good and reliable PCI Fan Cards I can buy for my Power Mac G5? Im looking at this one here? Is It a good idea to buy or no? http://www.vantecusa.com/en/product/view_detail/101 I love my Vantec DDR SDRAM Heatsinks I bought 4 of them from Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835110105 They are awesome since my 4 1GB DDR Chips got very hot. Now I need one for my Graphics card. Thanks. Im still running my GeForce FX 5200. So I cant use any fans that run from the card itself. Thanks in advance.

    Hi-
One like This is nice because it exhausts hot air, rather than just mixing it around inside the case.
When installed next to an AGP card, it helps pull heat off the card and quickly expels it.
Just stirring air around can disrupt the airflow of the case.
A dual fan PCI slot cooler like This has both exhaust and a movable fan for increasing spot cooling.

  • DVD Ripping  help needed

Well, I looked through the topics for the application, "handbrake", and downloaded it via one of the links that one of the members gave. Anyhow, it wouldn't install. I'm assuming it's only for mac users? Anyhow, is there a version that's for windows or does anyone know of another good DVD ripping application that is iPod friendly? I heard that handbrake can rip and convert ripped DVD's into the correct format for ipod. Also, if it can rip it into a format that can be converted via videora, then that would be fine as well.

After several tries with other apps mention, I stumbled on "PQ DVD to Pod" software and it has worked great for me on my XP PC. Download the free trial version. It will limit you to a 5-10 minute record time unless you buy, but you can at least try it out before spending money. It is easy to use. Does DVDs and most other vid files as well.
I like that it will easily let you take portions of a DVD (like concert videos) and nicely pull out just the ones you want. Downside: unless it's a long DVD, you have to manually stop the recording so have to watch when near completion.
No perfect solutions yet it seems.....

  • Can Anyone Recommend a Good External DVD Burner?

Does anyone know of a good external DVD burner that I can use with my Powerbook G4 (combo drive)? It seems like most are compatible with windows only. Thanks!

If you're going to get a DVD burner, I would recommend going with a LaCie external drive. I got a 16x DVD+/- with Lightscribe and CD-RW burner from LaCie and I've never had a problem with it. Also, it came with Toast 7 so that was another plus. I got it for $190 at the Apple Store.
However, if you're just looking to buy a simple burner for iDVD, or you want to use the Finder to burn DVDs, just get a cheaper one w/o Toast.

  • Does anybody know a good free .doc or .docx test editor for the iPad?

is there a good free text editor for the ipad 2?

    The Technology Wiz wrote:
but still why not have full MS Office on the ipad?
Because Microsoft has not made Office for the iPad. And if they do, I can just about guarantee that it won't be free.
There are free text editors, but I know of nothing free that can edit Office documents. iOS can open .doc and .docx documents so you can view them, but to edit them you'll most probably need to buy an app. Creating such an app is a lot of work, so I don't see why spending $10 or so is a "ripoff".
Note that CloudOn works on the company's servers, unless I've completely misunderstood (it's like Google Docs) so you must have a network connection for it to work. If that's fine for you, then that's perhaps a good solution, at least until they start charging (which they'll either do or have advertising).  If you want to be able to create and edit documents on the iPad itself, then you'll need to buy something, I think.
    Regards.

have produced DVD using iMovie, now want to download this back to iMovie, will not read DVD, have been told a piece of software available - any chance anybody knows what?

Handbrake is not ideal for this.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
