Anybody use GarageBand for Drum Corps/Marching Band work?

I'm not in Drum Corps or anything, but I used to follow that stuff when I was in high school marching band, and I got the idea that GarageBand could potentially be a pretty nifty way to arrange some of that kind of music.
Just wondering if anybody has done this? Any recommended Jam Packs/other instruments? Other experiences/pros/cons welcome!
Thanks!

Try place like these. I have not heard any of these loops myself.

I'm new using Logic, i've been using garageband for quite awhile now though but my question is just basic. When i want to record electric guitar while clicking the software option it brings me to alot of guitar sounds that i want to chose. I chose the twangy electric or the distorted strat but i only hear clean sounds. No matter what kind of guitar sound i chose in the library it only produces clean guitar. How can i make it sound like it supposed to? Did i miss something i should do?

This definitely has me stumped as I'm unsure as to why your guitar can be heard, but with none of the channel strips plugins applied to the sound.
On the record enabled channel strip that contains your guitar input, is the "I" button located near the "R" active? Also, if you record your guitar, can you hear the FX applied to it when you play back the recorded track?

  • I'm using GarageBand for voiceover and my voice is only recording in one track. How do I get it in stereo?

I'm using a Bluebird mic hooked up to speakers and MAudio Fast Track interface.  I went to GarageBand preferences and set up the recording for MAudio and stereo but it's still recording in mono.  Any suggestions?

  • Who uses exs24 for drums?

hi, ive always been aware of drum programming via exs24.....but never fully understood in depth..... how its done.....
who uses exs24 for drums?? can you explain how you use it?
ive loaded up a bunch of hits....across a zone.....
but those parameters on the front of the exs24..... change the sound of the whole instrument, right?
but say if you wanna change the sound of one kick drum? with the exs24.....
would you have to devote the whole channel/exs24 to the ONE kick sound???
or can you independently tweak each drum sound on each zone/key?
im sorry, but how do i send a drum sound from exs24 to its own channel in logic mixer?
im used to NI battery but havnt got it for the mac yet.... should i take the time out and use and learn exs24 for my drum programming?
    cheers

    nice nice nice....
    that sounded like live drumming....
    thanks
was that recorded from a live drummer, or you programme the drums in the piano roll/matrix editor?
so when you use the exs24 for drums....you just programme in the piano roll? or record live MIDI.....
This obviously depends from personal experience...
I know drummers that play directly to EXS24 (or other sampler) by using MIDI trigger pads... (such as Roland Pad drums)
I know professional drummer that make session over the web for work
I'm a Piano player and i prefer to use my keyboard or... depends.. if I need to add juas a Crash Cynbals on the down beat I can also use to add direct in the piano roll and copy the same over the song
everything depends from the target that you want reach...
programming drums via midi is not much different tha other instruments parts
every professional musician has his personal business secrets, obtained with the experience of his work.
so you have one drum sound per exs24 in a single stero track?
Yes, single tracks of single stereo samples in the 80% of cases...
I also use various Samples that I select by myself during the working in progress...
I can only suggest you to search in the Thousands of Akai samples Library (or Roland, EMU, Kurzwiel)
and of course in the NI generation such as EWQL Stormdrum and spectrasonics...
in almost cases the samples are the same.. but if you have milion of Sample you can reach to find your personal sound setting!
Obviously.. there is a faster way... just use EZ-drummer, Battery, BFD etc.

What I am saying is ..........
The iPhone HAS to be active making calls on the UK carrier network for the carrier to identify as "theirs" and therefore eligible for the Carrier to unlock
The way to achieve this is to use a PAYG sim making and receiving calls to establish a customer relationship  with the Carrier and then follow the Carrier's process to unlock
With a PAYG it usually means adding a specified (by the carrier ) amount  usually £15 /£20 depending on the carrier
This is how O2 function and according to Gemma  this is how Vodafone work

  • Using Garageband for live performances

I would love to hear from anyone who uses GB for live performances. I'm especially interested in how you store and play your music; ie direct from your computer drive, on flash card or thumb drive etc. I'm a one man show with guitar, flute, and keyboard. I'm really new at this and any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey Gillermo... I might have to eat my words. I had a good think about this last night and I have come up with a plan. Just shooting from the hip and so might need some refinement, but here goes...
The problem as I saw it with Garageband was two fold...
    1. how to lay out several songs or groups of pre recorded tracks and tracks with effects on them for my vocal and guitar and
    2. lack of an easy to use controller of some sort that worked with GB to minimize mouse use, speed up transfer/choosing between songs and organize my set layout with a structure of some sort.
As a result of mucking around with my Korg NanoKontrol and using the plugin for GarageBand, I can now envision a logical system for using GB for Live performance as a one person show.
The NanoK has the ability to control 8 tracks at a time. You have use of Volume, Pan, Mute, Solo as well as the transport buttons when using scene number 1 on the NK. It has the ability to scroll through groups of 8 tracks at a time with dedicated buttons on fader bank 9.
As a simple example, lets take 4 tracks 1. a track dedicated to vocal with some effects on it to taste 2. a track dedicated to guitar with some effects to taste 3. prerecorded bass track (file bounced down to mp3 or similar) and 4. a drum/percussion track set up like track 3.
Now what you have is the use of 4 tracks for your performance ( there are a few other options though). Now if you load tracks 5-6 with the bass and drums of another song and 7-8 with the tracks of yet another song you now have 3 songs you can play/sing from the first fader bank set. These are all visible on the laptop screen.
Now thinking in groups of 8 tracks, the 2nd set of 8 tracks (tracks 9-16) is set up in a similar way with tracks 9-10 duplicates of 1-2 (vox & guitar) and 3 sets of bass and drums (or what ever). You would name each set of bass and drum tracks with the name of the song so you could always find out where you are. You could also apply instrument icons for easier identification.
So starting with fader bank 1 and tracks 1-4 un muted, you would have muted all the other tracks in the entire set ( before you started your show obviously). Hit play, sing your song... hit stop. Hit rewind, mute tracks 3-4, un mute tracks 5-6, hit play when ready and away you go with song No.2. Repeat for song 3. Once you have completed these 3 songs and made sure all of the tracks are muted via the Nano, press the button that moves the controls to the next set of 8 tracks or 3 songs.
Now in terms of performance there would be some trial and error needed to find out how big the project file could be before there were computer performance issues. I read somewhere there was an upper limit of approx 240 tracks in GB. In reality you would be thinking in terms of how many songs there are in your sets. So in this scenario if you had 15 songs in each set you would only need 40 tracks or 5 sets of 8 fader banks.
To minimize performance issues with projects getting on the large side, in between your sets you could close the project with set one in it and open the project file with set 2 in it.
A couple of other layout options would be to use an entire bank of faders for each song. You could have between 5-8 tracks usable per song. You could have a combination of audio, .wav/mp3, electric guitar and software instrument tracks. Simply go through the mute/unmute process as you scroll through your songs.
You could also lock/unlock the odd track for another level of performance optimization, but you would have to use the mouse pad for this as it can't be done via the NK.
The pro's for this type of system are
    1. Complete control of mixing vol & pan for the venue you are in
    2. Very simple control at your finger tips, 2 or more faders at a time, limited mouse use
    3. A logical frame work to create your sets.
    4. You can stay in GarageBand, no need for another software program.
    5. Very cheap investment.
The Con's would all revolve around your computer spec's.
    1. Max out your RAM.
    2. Be selective with effects
    3. System HD speed.
Note, I am assuming my vox and guitar are going through and audio interface with outs to an amp or PA of some sort.
I am going to have to try this out. I really DO NOT LIKE Ableton Live. It is heavy on CPU and gets really deep very quickly. If this works then I will have an Live Serial# for sale.

  • Using GarageBand for classical music

We have to set up a series of "clips" from Classical Music - Brahms, Beethoven et al - for classes to be taught at a summer school for Adults.  We were recommended to use GarageBand. We were told you could go to the section we wanted - (music downloaded to I-Tunes) - and then do a start of the section move it to the end of the "section" and then save it as a "Track".
We are considerng buying an IPAD - as we have only a NANO - and can't see the screen.
    Please advise.
    Thank you.
    Ann

Thank you for resonding.  We were told at Best Buy all we would need is GarageBand.  So - I appreciate your honesty that this appears to be not what we need.
The situation is as follows.  My husband will teach in Aspen, CO this summer to Elderhostel people.  Back in the days of drop the needle this was easy.   But now - everything is digital.  And, so he has been downloading music to ITunes.  He wants to go to a section of a piece of music (say - within the 2nd movement and play where the "horns" come in.  And, then go to another section within the 2nd movement to show the change in tempo and "feeling".  And, be able to play that.  And, he can't take the time of "fast forwarding" and hoping he stops at the right place.   Once he has set these up - probably  40 to 50 start and stops for 6 lectures - then he would transfer everything over to IPAD.
We will purchase one -as we have wanted something small and portiable which has wifi.So we can access our emails and the WWW.
Does any of this make sense now?  Is there  MAC AP which would do what we are looking for.   This is what Best Buy kid said we/he could do.
I do appreciate your respondingto me.
    Thanks,
    Ann

  • Record Keyboard MIDI using GarageBand for iPad

See this video using GB4iPad to record keyboard MIDI:-
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQlbjFxdxGE

I just discovered the arpeggiator feature today, and indeed, as gb 1111 mentioned, it doesn't work via MIDI input!!!! An incredible oversight! Perhaps an option to allow this can be added in an update, Apple?
I am forwarding gb 1111's concern to the GarageBand for iPad feedback page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/garageband_ipad.html. Let's all do the same, in the hope of further improvements and refinements to GarageBand for iPad by Apple!

  • How do I use Garageband for iPad with a real amp?

I play with a guy down the street who has a couple of amps set up. The one I use is kind of limited in it's tonal qualities. In my twenties and thirties I would have no problem hauling my own amp down there to get my tones dialed in, but I'm forty freakin' seven and too old for that!  When I have tried to plug the iPad into my amp at home, I get terrible feedback.  I used to have a Rockman (remember those?) and I could take it with me and plug into any guitar amp set to clean and be good to go, how do I do that with my iPad and Garageband?
I'm using a no name "y" cord with the 1/8" three ringed input into the ipad and a 1/8 stereo and 1/4 inch outputs-all sounds great on headphones, and with computer speakers, but need to plug into a real guitar amp.
I am using a 50 watt Yamaha to test and am having no luck at all.  I know it has to do with impedance, but I am not very versed in how to get around it.
    Thanks in advance!

Okay, after fiddling around some more, I’m able to get–some-settings to work.    1) set the real amp to clean settings (duh).  Keep the volume on the low side (double duh). 2) stick to the smaller amps from the “clean and “processed” groups ofpresets.
The only way (so far) I’ve found to get some crunch is by turning the gain up on the GB amp you’re using, but only to a point, then I got feedback again.
Also, my “y” cord does have a name, it’s a GriffinTechnologies GuitarConnect Cable. I haven’t tried any of the other devices, so I can’t say if the feedbackwould be less irksome on other devices, but I kind of doubt it.

  • Anybody use GarageBand as a performance tool?

... maybe backing for your solo gig or something?
I really like GB for its simplicity. I have got more work done on it than Ableton, Reaper, Logic Ex and Acid combined. It just works for me and is easy to muddle my way round. However, I have performance opportunities coming through and before I go back to Ableton Live's Session view and play back the aiff's I have made in GarageBand, just thought I would ask if someone has figured out a system to play live with GB. My gig is a solo vox and acoustic guitar with tastful percussion, bass and 'atmosphere' backing.
    Thanks.

Haven't gigged GB but I have used it in conjunction with a USB keyboard at practice sessions to do a little bit of keyboard. Although it works, I'd have serious concerns about the robustness of the hardware for a gig - USB and especially Firewire cables fall out far too easily, mini stereo jack outputs bend and break, and you don't really want to drop your laptop or have someone pour a beer over it.
Also, if you're effectively playing to backing tracks, what would be the advantage of GB? If you've exported AIFFs you won't get any better sound quality from using GB at the gig, and having 'live' access to your master backing tracks could be a recipe for disaster - you might accidentally mute, solo, delete, or worst of all, move one of your tracks so it's out of time to the others...
I think Murphy's Law applies, so keep it simple with AIFFs

  • Is anybody using Scarbee Imperial Drums XL in Logic Studio?

Hey all. Nearing the end of my migration from G5 to Mac Pro. I'm fine with giving up some of my legacy plugins, but would find it hard to live without this one. Is anybody successfully using this plugin in Logic Studio? If so, if you could share your installation procedure it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Okay, I'll take that as a no. I tried various ways to install the component file and the Halion updaters, but nothing works. Bummer. I do have a Kontakt 1.52 version lurking in my old download files, so I'll give that one a go. I'll be surprised if all the clever programming from the Halion version works (especially the modwheel-controlled hi-hat), but we'll see.

You need to download their download manager for it to work.

  • Have been using firefox for months; now has quit working properly with the websites I use everyday. What happened?

It has quit working with "liverez" which is my web based reservation program. The place I login is https://reservations.liverez.com/login.asp?LogOff=True&Return=Res but once I login, the site does not work as it did before. The website that corresponds with this doesn't look right now either. I can't even use my msn email account with firefox now. I have had to go back to using internet explorer. I have not even tried other sites with foxfire at this time. The other sites I use for work. Things that aren't working are that I can't click on things I need to click on, drop downs aren't showing up, pictures are absent, etc. It is all working fine on internet explorer and used to work on firefox until last night.

Thanks to some hints in several strings, I went back to the Control Panel in XP, clicked on Sounds and Devices, clicked on Audio, then changed the default device to the Realtek HD Audio output I have on my computer. Now I can hear You Tube video sound and other Internet audio fine, at least for now. I will come back if it stops again. Thanks to all who posted.

  • Sites using TALEO for job searches no longer works in 19, worked in last official 18 release

Company websites which use the TALEO job search/apply app/site, no longer work right in 19, they worked fine in 18.xx. Specially, the job search function does not work right when entering the TALEO job search parameters then hitting SEARCH FOR JOB does nothing. AN example site (which does not require registration) is https://nielsen.taleo.net/careersection/3/jobsearch.ftl?lang=en. If I make selections for JOB FIELD and/or LOCATIOn then hit SEARCH FOR JOB, nothing happends. Sites using TALEO worked fine in the last offical 18.x release. TALEO worksd fine in IE 7&Chrome 25.
Clearing the cache does not change behavior. Finally did a full FF reset--no change.
    WIN XP SP3 | Dell Dimension 4600 | 1.2 G RAM

I am running Firefox version 19.0.2 and I have the same problem. I am able to filter using Internet Explorer which I really don't like. Rather than users having to figure out why this isn't working either Taleo needs to fix their scripts or a fix needs to happen in Firefox.
