Anybody using Epson 4490 scanner w/ Arch?

Hi, folks--
I need a good but reasonably priced photo scanner that works with Linux. I am finding that the choices are quite limited, but the Epson 4490 looks like a possibility. However, it requires the 3rd-party iscan driver to work with any Linux distro; the company that develops that driver tests a number of Linux distros, but Arch is not on their list. So, I'm wondering, does anybody use this scanner with Arch? Any voodoo required to make it work?
BTW, let's please not talk about Wine or any other Windows-based solution. I do need to scan, and will do what I have to to make it work, but any non-pure-Linux approach is a last resort. I would be open to suggestions of other scanners, though.
TIA for your thoughts.

  • Epson 4490 scanner not found by Acrobat X in Lion 10.7.4

    1. Uninstalled Epson software with software in "epson12887" uninstaller (from Epson).
    2. After connecting scanner, ran Apple Software Update and added the Epson Printer Software Update 2.11 from Apple.
    3. Epson 4490 Scanner is visible in System Preferences > Print & Scan window.
    4. Apple's Image Capture sees the Epson 4490 scanner, and Image Capture works with the scanner.
    5. Adobe Photoshop CS6 sees the scanner after adding Adobe's TWAIN plug-in, and Photoshop works with the scanner.
    In Acrobat, go to:
FIle > Create > PDF from Scanner
Scanner > Please select a device
    The Epson scanner isn't listed.

I found the answer, thanks to this link:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1054100
The solution is to go to Epson's site, and download the software that's specific to OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for my scanner. In my case, I installed both the ICA driver and the EpsonScan software specific for OS X 10.6 for the Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner.
    Unfortunately, Epson's Lion page:
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supportLion.jsp
points you to Apple's Software Update page for Epson drivers for Lion. While this is generally good advice (these were needed and appropriate for Image Capture and Photoshop CS6), the older 10.6 drivers and software from Epson are also required for Adobe Acrobat Pro X to "find" the scanner.

  • Epson 4490 Scanner won't work, Epson 1260 does- recent upgrade 10.4.4

I just upgraded last week to 10.4.4 and my Epson Perfection 1260 scanner software didn't want to load. I hooked the USB directly to computer (from USB hub) and no problems. This week I bought an Epson Perfection 4490 (have LOTS of slides to scan) and the application will not open. I keep getting error messages "The application Epson Scan quit unexpectedly."
I have installed and uninstalled software from disc w/ scanner.
I have downloaded software from Epson site.
I have tried the www.hamrick.com software (that gives me the message that I don't have a scanner hooked up.)
I have reparied disc permissions. I have run DiskWarrior.
The system lists the scanner in the USB port, but ImageCapture can't 'see' it.
Any thoughts? I emailed Epson tonight.
Any ideas for Mac-compatible scanner that does 4 or more slides at a time if I can't get this (^%#_#) scanner to work?
Thanks so much for your advice.

    I know I'm going to sound redundant here, but I have solved my problems with the Epson 3170 every time by trashing all the software associated with Epson scanner & Smart Panel; then reinstalling from the original CD that came with the scanner (including Smart Panel); then installing all the patches in chronological order from the Epson website. I've had to do this 3 times, with success each time (Jag, Panther, Tiger). It's a lot of work. Here are the exact directions from Epson support to trash all the associated files;
Thank you for contacting the Epson Connection.
To completely uninstall the scanner software please follow the steps below.
    UNINSTALL
To ensure that all Epson Scan files have been removed from the system you
would need to check for the following items in the Hard Drive. Please note:
Not all files and locations will be present. If you do not find one of the
items listed, please continue on with the next step.
    1. In HD (Hard Drive), APPLICATIONS - remove EPSON SCAN and EPSON SCANNER
    MONITOR, if present
NOTE: If you receive an error that EPSON SCANNER MONITOR cannot be deleted
because it is in use, go into HD, APPLICATIONS, UTILITIES and open ACTIVITY
MONITOR. Highlight the EPSON SCANNER MONITOR process and click on QUIT
PROCESS to quit the process. Close ACTIVITY MONITOR. You can now go back
into the APPLICATIONS folder and delete EPSON SCANNER MONITOR.
    2. In HD, LIBRARY, APPLICATION SUPPORT - remove the EPSON SCANNER MODULE
    folder.
    3. In HD, LIBRARY, IMAGE CAPTURE, TWAIN DATA SOURCES - remove the ".ds"
    file bearing your scanner's name.
    4. In HD, USERS, (YOUR USER NAME), LIBRARY, PREFERENCES - Open the EPSON
folder and then delete the EPSON SCAN folder.
Please Follow the steps below to uninstall your Smart Panel software
    1. Insert CD into CD Rom
    2. Double-click the SMART PANEL folder
    3. Double-click AMERICAN and then SMART PANEL UNINSTALLER
    4. Click YES to completely uninstall
    5. Restart your computer
    6. Go back to CD then SMART PANEL then AMERICAN and click on SMART PANEL
    INSTALLER to reinstall your software.

  • Problem using Epson V600 scanner in Photoshop CS2

The scanner opens its dialogue window, no problem.  I can do a Preview scan without any problem, but when I request a Scan, this progresses properly, but the resultant scan is presented in the Photoshop workspace on top of the Epson dialogue windows.  At this point all of the Photoshop features are greyed-out so that I cannot move the scanned image to close down the Epson windows.   The only way I can make progress is to minimise Photoshop, close the Epson windows and then maximise Photoshop again.
Previously I had an Epson Perfection 3200 scanner which always maintained the scanner windows on top - and so could be closed with a click.
Is there any way to keep the Epson Scanner windows on-top and automatically send the scanned image to the back on Photoshop CS2?    This should be simple, but I have tried most things.

I would like to import photos that I have scanned with my Epson 4490 photo scanner.  I am scanning slides and it appears that I can not use the WAI feature that is offered in photoshop elements 11.  I am able to import using photoshop elements 2.  Has the functionality been lost in the newer version?

    Try installing the TWAIN plug-in - http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/twain-installed-photoshop-elements-11.html.

  • Using Epson scanner (Power PCprogram) under Lion

The software for using this wonderfull scanner is not supported under Lion. According to Epson and Apple there must be a solution available from Apple.
So far, I did succeed in finding the required info.
Did anybody face the same problem, and can be of help?

From what I can see that should be supported by Lion - see here.

  • Epson 4490 Pro scanner

Just a quick report to say my Epson 4490 Pro scanner works great with the latest Epson drivers, which I had already installed, Version 3.03A. Hope this helps.

Glad to hear the scanner works under Snow Leopard. However, there were lots of components and utilities that came packaged with the scanner software and I'm wondering if they all still work as well.
For example, I frequently use the Epson Copy Utility with my scanner & printer to do my photocopying. I also occasionally use the Abbyy FineReader character recognition software that came bundled with the printer. It was already fairly old software when I bought my scanner (FineReader 5 Sprint +) but I hope it still works with Snow Leopard (obviously Rosetta would need to be installed).
Has anyone out there tested these components with Snow Leopard?

  • How do scan strip negatives via my Epson 4990 scanner using Image Capture since upgrade to OS X Mavericks

Hello Everyone. OK I upgraded to OS X Mavericks without thinking that by doing this would stop me using my Epson 4990 scanner as no driver / software currently available - OK my fault. Anyway as Epson have not yet provided an update (yet?), all advice being recieved is use "Image Capture" for the time being. I have tried this along with using the "Help" files but unfortunately dont seem to be be any assistance. In simples terms I just wish to scan film negative strips (and transparencies) but it dont seem to be possible. Could any member advised how to get solve this problem as I am in the middle of a major scanning exercise with the worst case senario that I wil have to revert to my Windows based laptop to carry on and temporary reduntant my iMac which defeats the point of the exercise. Thank you in advance (hopefully)

Replay I received from Epson today:-
"In response to your email, we unfortunately do not have any update available for your model at present. We have no confirmed date for this but as far as we are aware this is likely to be in the next two weeks"

I have scanned photos using an Epson V500 scanner set to scan using jpeg format at the highest quality (least compression) setting.  When I try to import the scanned jpegs into iPhoto, I get an error message from iPhoto saying "The file is an unrecognized format."  But if I reduce the quality setting on the Epson scanner to just slightly below highest quality, the images import into iPhoto just fine.  Why won't iPhoto accept jpegs scanned at the highest quality setting?  Wondering?

What scanner format settings dis you use?  Are these color photos? If they are B/W did you scan as grayscale images?  That could be the problem.
Are you able to open them with Preview?  If so do a Save As, select full quality and save as a jpeg with a new file name.  See if that file will import and work as intended.

  • Epson V30 scanner TWAIN compliant- Macbook Pro running OS X 10.7Lion

I bought a new Epson V30 scanner to connect to my Macbook Pro running Lion, however when I try to scan in a check to my bank it says it can't find the driver for the scanner and to use one that is TWAIN compliant?  The software that came with the scanner said to go to website for Epson and not use the disk if you had Lion so I did that, the scanner installed, but I'm guessing the OCR is what is missing since it will scan everything else.  There is no software update from Apple for this, anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this?

I have an Epson V33 scanner. The only thing that worked for me was to buy the extremely good VueScan software. The Mac internal stuff was awful for this scanner.

  • Photoshop CS5 not working with my epson 1640xl scanner on Mac OS Lion

Just loaded CS5 on Mac 10.7.  I downloaded and installed the  latest OSX Epson 1640xl scanner software, and also copied the Twain plugin from the Adobe Goodies CD to the Photoshop > Plugins > Import/Export folder.
Rebooted the computer, power off and unplugged my USB scanner, fired it back up, restarted Photoshop, etc.   It no longer shows up in Photoshop>File>Import
But Photoshop doesn't see my scanner at all.  In fact, the TWAIN plugin doesn't even show up in the plugins folder list.
Little Help?  How do I fix this? Everything worked perfectly with Mac 10.6  I also took the scanner into a epson dealer and the scanner works perfectly.
    [email protected]

That scanner is sort of old, and doesn't have a 64 bit driver.
As Noel said: use Photoshop in 32 bit addressing mode to work with older drivers and plugins.

  • Image Capture is not recognizing my Epson Stylus Scanner 2000

I have an Epson Stylus Scanner 2000 printer that scans, prints, copies and fax. I faithfully used these fetures in my home-based buisness with my G3 until I traded for a Mac Pro. I can print without a glitch, no problems there. How can I scan and fax??? I've been the the Epson website and didn't see my printer on the list of updates and recognized printers for OS 10.x. What can I do??? I need to keep my printer (which is in excellent working condition). Help me to scan and fax please...

You need Intel or Universal Binary drivers, which it seems Epson doesn't offer. What I use to use for my scanner (and still do actually) is VueScan. But I did end up buying a $79 Canon LiDE 70 eventually.
    http://hamrick.com
Epson Stylus 2000 is listed there as supported.
    http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm#epson
A lot of older printers are supported by CUPS or GuttenPrint so take a look there (avoid the latest beta driver though).

  • Epson 2450 Scanner no longer available as an import into Photoshop

    Hello,
I am having a problem with my Epson 2450 scanner importing into Photoshop. Last week with thoughts of upgrading, I purchased an Epson V700. I installed the scanner but found it not to my liking and returned it. Yesterday I downloaded and ran the Uninstaller to remove the V700. This however deleted my 2450 driver as well. I reinstalled the 2450 driver from Epson but then, and after repeated attempts, found that the 2450 is not showing up as an import option. Please note that I am still using Tiger. Any suggestions to getting this all working again as it has for the past 8 years would be greatly appreciated. One simple use of an uninstaller has turned for the worse - I wish I had just kept the V700 installed and just ignored that it was still listed in Photoshop as an import choice. (Please note also, that I am a high school photo teacher and was planning on giving the 2450 to my school. I was not able to load the driver and use the scanner through Photoshop on our school Macs either.)
    Thank you,
    Nick M.

Hello, did you repair Permissions & reboot yet?
    One possible option is Vuescan...
    http://www.hamrick.com/
It supports the 2450, can be made to send the scan directly to PhotoShop, and has many more features than Epson's SW does.

  • How do I get Photoshop CS3 to recognize my Epson 1660 scanner?

I just got a new MacBook Pro, and I can't get my Epson 1660 scanner to show up under "Import." Photoshop is running in Rosetta and worked fine on my old MacBook. The scanner works via Image Capture but I want to use it through Photoshop. I tried re-installing the driver ("ICA scanner driver for Image Capture") off the Epson website but no luck.

If you "just got a new Mac", you are probably not running in Rosetta, as Rosetta was deprecated in Lion, Mac OS 10.7.  That may be your problem, especilly if you migrated your Photoshop from an older computer.
The migration software copies your CS3 preferences, which include Rosetta, but there is no Rosetta in Lion.  There's a file you need to delete, so keep an eye on this thread:
