Anybody using the Windows 8 Start screen?

My original question was: Can we place bundle icons on the Windows 8 Start screen, alongside those "Modern/Metro" Windows apps?
But then I figured I should back up and ask whether anyone with a large ZCM deployment is even presenting the new Windows 8 Start screen to their users.
If you've deployed Windows 8, I'd love to hear your feedback.

I have test units that I am working with. I have had none of my current Start Menu apps showing up. This has been a minor item on my list of things to work with so I haven't investigated possible causes or if this is even supported. Honestly in my environment I would love to be able to push the older start menu/Desktop style and skip Metro. My teachers are going to freak when they start to use this new style. I had a hard time with the Windows 7 changes with some of the staff. My staff has a real hard time with change so Windows 8 is going to be a hard sell.
What type of devices are you looking at for Windows 8? I have been looking at whether I need to be looking for touch based Laptops or move to a more Tablet with a keyboard type environment.

  • How do I pin a firefox site to the Windows 8 start screen?

    I just got a new AIO with windows 8; not may favorite thing but I'm learning.
    I use Firefox as my browser exclusively but Window 8 help, of course, won't explain how to pin sites through other browsers. I had to set up my desktop on my start screen so I can open Firefox from there and then I can start browsing with Firefox - but there has to be an easier way....I've tried to search through the Firefox support but I'm an accountant, not a techie and this is getting very frustrating. lol I hope someone can explain to me how to do this. And in very small words please - remember I'm bean-counter. :)
    Thanks y'all.

    jscher2000 - thanks for a really fast response!
    Your links got me to get to clicking on other related links and I did find a site that was very easy to follow so I'm adding it here for you to give to others; has illustrations and''''' very''''' easy to follow instructions. Perfect to someone like me. I wouldn't have found it without you getting me started though.
    Thanks!!!

  • Suggestion: Please make a Visual Studio Solution Explorer that is similar to Windows 8 Start Screen

    We have monitors now that are enormous and it is now the norm to develop on three or more monitors.  Yet we still try to crowd project navigation info that pleads to be fully visualized into a tiny window as if expanding it is somehow a waste of space.
    I mention Windows 8 start screen in the title of this post.  I have no particular love for the start screen except that it is a different spin on a strict hierarchical display of information.  I like that it has the objective of using all available
    screen space to present information that would otherwise be shown in a tiny corner of the screen.  So my suggestion in its most general form is for you guys to find a way to use the entire screen to allow a developer to quickly and easily navigate a large
    VS project.
    For example, even if I fully expand the Solution Explorer to take up the space of an entire monitor the top level nodes of my project take up a tiny fraction of the available screen space - I have to drill down up to 12 levels to reach my files.  And when
    I get to the point where I think I see the file I want, the higher level folders have scrolled off the screen so I loose my place in the project.
    A couple of suggestions for a new Solution Explorer:
    Edit: Make the Solution Explorer more like the Windows 8 Start screen or a file directory browser in the sense that Start Screen is a full-screen navigation screen versus a control that is primarily desigend to be docked.  If I maximize Solution Explorer
    on my monitor the MOST screen space it will use is about 20% down the left edge of my screen.  Even with 80% of my screen left EMPTY, I am clicking and clicking and scrolling and clicking and scrolling in order to navigate to where I need to be. /Edit
    Show an always-visible breadcrumb across the top of the window so the user can navigate up quickly and also maintain a sense of location within the project.
    Show folders and files horizontally and vertically.  USE THE ENTIRE WINDOW! Allow different views just as we see in Windows file explorer.
    Allow (large) user defined icons to be associated with projects, folders and files.  Instead of showing the same icon for every project in a solution, default to a unique icon.  Thats why we use icons, right?
    Allow projects and folders to have foreground/background color properties.
    "Scope to this" on the context menu is great... please add the root name on the tab.
    It would also be very helpful to display the full directory and solution name on the VS title bar to avoid confusion when working with different versions of the same project.  There are a couple add-ons that do this... why has it become necessary for add-ons.

    Hi SWheaties,
    Thanks for posting in the MSDN forum.

  • Unable to Switch Users on Window 8 Start Screen

    I can not switch users from the Windows 8 Start Screen.
    Previously when I clicked on the current user Icon in the upper right corner, all the users were displayed for selection.
    Now it just displays a pull-down menu (1) Change account picture, (2) Lock and (3) Sign out.
    When I (3) Sign Out the display turns black then returns with the current user sign in screen.

    I am having the same problem, only there is NO option to Select Other User.  This is the second time this issue has happened and I would like to know how to re-enable the option to switch to another user without refreshing the PC.

    Is there a way to make the user's start screen changes roam?
    Making application settings roam is great but I'd like to make this roam - then I can be rid of roaming profiles

    I don't believe the Start Screen is in scope yet in V1. Stay tuned.

  • (Mountain Lion) suddenly the screen turns black, and I have to use the switch to turn it on. And, the screen turns to zoom, and the only way to turn to normal is to close the window and start all over again?

    (Mountain Lion) suddenly the screen turns black, and I have to use the on/off switch to turn it on. And, the screen turns to zoom, and the only way to return to normal is to close the window and start all over again?

    Does the screen go black while you are using the machine? ...or after it has sat idle for a bit?
    If it happens while you're using the machine, check to see if a hot corner has been set for sleep. You can do that here: System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver and click the button labelled "Hot Corners..." in the lower right.
    If it happens after a bit of idle time, that's normal sleep behavior. The delay can be adjusyed here: System Preferences > Energy Saver.
    In either case, pressing any key on the keyboard should bring it out of sleep.
    Re zooming -
    If this happens while in Safari, and you are using an Apple Magic Mouse, a default setting applicable to it is that a soft double-tap on the mouse will zoom the Safari window. A second double-tap will bring it back.
    If it is the entire screen that is zooming, Control plus scroll gesture on the mouse will zoom the whole screen. Repeat with the opposite scroll gesture to bring it back.

  • When I click on the Nightly Windows 8 Start Screen icon it opens the Firefox 18 on desktop, how do I open Nightly on Metro?

    Nightly was working on metro at first when I haven't installed Firefox 18 yet but when I installed Firefox 18 and thought it would run on metro if I set it as a default program which did not, opening nightly both on the desktop and start screen would open the firefox in the desktop instead.
    I uninstalled Nightly and downloaded and installed the version 20 for 32 bit. When I looked on the default programs to set Nightly all I could see is Nightly on the list but the icon has changed to that of Firefox's. I set it as default and still it doesn't open as metro.
    Any ideas how to fix this?

    This is because the regular central Nightly channel builds is only the desktop version. The version on Nightly development channel is at 21.0a1 now actually.
    You need a build that has Metro support.
    http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-elm/
    Many users state they cannot get Metro version to work on 32-bit Windows anyways.
    There is this running thread at mozillaZine about the Metro builds. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2304983

  • How do I use the commands to start and restart the jmqbroker normally?

    How do I use the commands to start and restart the jmqbroker normally?
    Because I have tried to use "jmqcmd shutdown bkr" and then tried to type
    "jmqbroker" to start up. My screen hangs up and seems that the process
    hangs up. The message is
    [28/Jun/2002:18:29:07 GMT+08:00] [B1060]: Loading persistent data...
    [28/Jun/2002:18:29:08 GMT+08:00] [B1039]: Broker "jmqbroker" ready.
    The prompt is hanged until I press CTRL-C.
    Then I got the following message:
    [28/Jun/2002:18:32:07 GMT+08:00] [B1047]: Shutting down broker...
    [28/Jun/2002:18:32:07 GMT+08:00] [B1077]: Broadcast good-bye to all

    [28/Jun/2002:18:32:07 GMT+08:00] [B1048]: Shutdown of broker complete.
    Then, I use jmqadmin to invoke the console, I can start the broker
    again, it gives me
    Error encountered while connecting to the broker: "MyBroker":
    Broker Host: 'localhost'
    Primary Port: '7676'
    [C4003]: Error occurred on connection creation, - caught
    javax.jms.JMSException
    Please verify that there is a broker running on the specified host and
    port.
    I used ps -def | grep jmq there is no process anymore.
    Is it a bug? Would somebody have any idea on what went wrong?

    'jmqbroker' is the command to start a broker.
    When you type 'jmqbroker' in a command window,
    unless you put it in the background, the shell
    prompt won't return until the broker is shutdown.
    So when you see 'Broker "jmqbroker" ready.', it tells
    you that the broker is running and is ready.
    When you CTRL-C the process, it has the same effect
    as using jmqcmd to shutdown the broker. And so after that,
    there's no jmq processes running since you have just
    shutdown the broker.
    Remember that the jmqcmd/jmqadmin 'restart' command is to
    restart an already running broker. jmcmd/jmqadmin does
    not support starting a new broker instance.
    If you are using csh, end the jmqcmd command with an ampersand ("&")
    to have the broker running in the background. An alternative is to
    stop the process with Ctrl-Z then input the command "bg" to have that
    process resumed in the background.
    The problem with not being able to start a broker using the
    administration console is a documented limitation of the product that
    Yvonne also mentioned. Check the Administrator's Guide for that.

  • Adobe Applications disappeared from my Windows 8 start screen

    Hi,
    After a recent update to my creative cloud all my adobe apps have disappeared from my windows 8 start screen. And when I search from them from the start screen it can't find them.
    If I use file explorer I can navigate to them, and the apps are still pinned to my task bar.
    Any ideas?
    Oh, and another issue I've just noticed, my creative cloud app won't log me in. Everytime I login it immediatly says "you have been signed out, please login in to continue.

    Try this discussion link:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1444190?tstart=0#discussion-6273921
    For Windows 7, in short, you need to delete a file in the local files folder - basically resets linkages or something to the creative cloud. Then restart the CC desktop app.
    I hope this helps.

  • 0x8007000e (E_OUTOFMEMORY) while adding a firewall rule using the windows firewall COM API

    Hello,
    Configuration: Windows Embedded 8 64-bit.
    I'm using the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security COM API. The program uses the INetFwRules interface. Basically, I'm using the following code (Form the code sample available here : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd339604%28v=vs.85%29.aspx.)
     I get the error when performing "hr = pFwRules->Add(pFwRule);".
    We can also encounter the problem when removing a rule (using pFwRules->Remove(ruleName);)
    HRESULT hrComInit = S_OK;
    HRESULT hr = S_OK;
    INetFwPolicy2 *pNetFwPolicy2 = NULL;
    INetFwRules *pFwRules = NULL;
    INetFwRule *pFwRule = NULL;
    long CurrentProfilesBitMask = 0;
    BSTR bstrRuleName = SysAllocString(L"SERVICE_RULE");
    BSTR bstrRuleDescription = SysAllocString(L"Allow incoming network traffic to myservice");
    BSTR bstrRuleGroup = SysAllocString(L"Sample Rule Group");
    BSTR bstrRuleApplication = SysAllocString(L"%systemroot%\\system32\\myservice.exe");
    BSTR bstrRuleService = SysAllocString(L"myservicename");
    BSTR bstrRuleLPorts = SysAllocString(L"135");
    // Initialize COM.
    hrComInit = CoInitializeEx(
    0,
    COINIT_APARTMENTTHREADED
    // Ignore RPC_E_CHANGED_MODE; this just means that COM has already been
    // initialized with a different mode. Since we don't care what the mode is,
    // we'll just use the existing mode.
    if (hrComInit != RPC_E_CHANGED_MODE)
    if (FAILED(hrComInit))
    printf("CoInitializeEx failed: 0x%08lx\n", hrComInit);
    goto Cleanup;
    // Retrieve INetFwPolicy2
    hr = WFCOMInitialize(&pNetFwPolicy2);
    if (FAILED(hr))
    goto Cleanup;
    // Retrieve INetFwRules
    hr = pNetFwPolicy2->get_Rules(&pFwRules);
    if (FAILED(hr))
    printf("get_Rules failed: 0x%08lx\n", hr);
    goto Cleanup;
    // Create a new Firewall Rule object.
    hr = CoCreateInstance(
    __uuidof(NetFwRule),
    NULL,
    CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER,
    __uuidof(INetFwRule),
    (void**)&pFwRule);
    if (FAILED(hr))
    printf("CoCreateInstance for Firewall Rule failed: 0x%08lx\n", hr);
    goto Cleanup;
    // Populate the Firewall Rule object
    pFwRule->put_Name(bstrRuleName);
    pFwRule->put_Description(bstrRuleDescription);
    pFwRule->put_ApplicationName(bstrRuleApplication);
    pFwRule->put_ServiceName(bstrRuleService);
    pFwRule->put_Protocol(NET_FW_IP_PROTOCOL_TCP);
    pFwRule->put_LocalPorts(bstrRuleLPorts);
    pFwRule->put_Grouping(bstrRuleGroup);
    pFwRule->put_Profiles(CurrentProfilesBitMask);
    pFwRule->put_Action(NET_FW_ACTION_ALLOW);
    pFwRule->put_Enabled(VARIANT_TRUE);
    // Add the Firewall Rule
    hr = pFwRules->Add(pFwRule);
    if (FAILED(hr))
    printf("Firewall Rule Add failed: 0x%08lx\n", hr);
    goto Cleanup;
    This works pretty well but, sometimes, at system startup, adding a rule ends up with the error 0x8007000e (E_OUTOFMEMORY) ! At startup, the system is always loaded cause several applications starts at the same time. But nothing abnormal. This is quite a random
    issue.
    According MSDN documentation, this error indicates that the system "failed to allocate the necessary memory".
    I'm not convinced that we ran out of memory.
    Has someone experienced such an issue? How to avoid this?
    Thank you in advance.
    Regards, -Ruben-

    Does Windows 8 desktop have the same issue? Are you building a custom WE8S image, or are you using a full WE8S image? The reason I ask is to make sure you have the modules in the image to support the operation.

  • Thinking about using the Windows Event Logs as my main log store - looking for pros and cons

    I have been writing some larger scripts that write to physical log files.  Until today I have avoided trying to use the Windows Event logs, but, am beginning to rethink this and wondered if anyone has done this, and, what the strengths and weaknesses
    of this logging approach has been.  If I do it, I will probably write a function that accepts pipelined input and simply pass output to the log.  I wanted to get a feel for what I would be getting into before I started writing things up since this
    will probably take a little bit of work to get set up to run properly.

    At my company we use the Windows event log for many of our batch process logging for several reasons:
    Unlike logging to a central database, the Windows event log is always available. I've seen poorly thought out logging solution which log to a database and if the database happens to be unavailable the batch process would fail.
    Monitoring tool such as SCOM already have Windows event log watchers so adding alerts to take action based on message written to the Windows event log is easy
    Built-in support for writing Windows event log entries in the Powershell V2 write-eventlog cmdlet, a simple CLR can created in SQL Server or even command-line eventcreate.exe
    Easy to create a custom event log so you don't have to use the default application log in Windows 2008 and higher.
    Most shrink-wrap S/W already use the event log
    Issues I've seen:
    Windows 2008 with UAC on requires "registering" i.e. creating a new event log source with UAC. This can be done one time manually. Unfortunately there isn't a way to automate UAC--pure GUI. The Powershell command would be "New-EventLog -LogName Application
    -Source  mysource" if you're using the Application log and must be run as  administrator.
    Errant process writes many entries to the event log. Depending on the volume like for example writing stack dumps this can performance problems. I  think I recall an issue an Windows 2003 or Windows 2008 with UAC off  if you're creating a new
    event log source each time (which you shouldn't) then these results in many registry entries which can cause problems.
    I don't think the issues outweigh the benefits--just something to be aware of.

  • Anybody using the Buffalo Terastation (or similar)?

    Is anybody using the Buffalo Terastation as a NAS or Backup drive?
    I'm looking into getting some external RAID storage for backups and such, and the Terastation looks really good and you can't beat the price.
    The biggest problem I see is that apparently the Terastatio is only accessible as a windows share or an ftp server which wouldn't work for backups.
    If I wanted to use Retrospect to do my backups I could only create backup jobs up to 2Gb only. If I wanted to use another backup software (SilverKeep, for example) all ownership and security permissions would get lost.
    So, is anybody using the Terastation successfully, or is there an alternative out there with similar characteristics and price?
    Thanks for your help,
    Julian

    I've been in no hurry because I had already invested in a number of externals for alternating cloning, but I've been seriously considering this alternate approach for the next hardware go-around.

  • Is there a way not to have to use the disk to start or exit Adobe Premiere Elements 13. I do not want to have to carry a disk around with me all the time.

    Is there a way not to have to use the disk to start or exit Adobe Premiere Elements 13. I do not want to have to carry a disk around with me all the time.

    tljtommy
    There is a known No Disc error using Premiere Elements 13.
    The fix is to delete the OldFilm.AEX file which is found in Window 8.1 64 bit
    Local Disk C
    Program Files
    Adobe
    Adobe Premiere Elements 13
    Plug-ins
    Common
    NewBlue
    and in the NewBlue Folder is the OldFilm.AEX file that you delete.
    Adobe first posted this information in one of the threads here, and it has worked for essentially all who have
    gotten the No Disc error in Premiere Elements 13.
    Please let us know if this works for you also.
    Thank you.

  • What do people think of the Windows 7 Starter

    What does everyone think of the Windows 7 Starter edition that comes preloaded on the netbooks? Are most people doing the upgrade to Home premium and if so how does it perform on the netbooks?

    Hi
    In my opinion its depending of that what you do with your notebook. I mean you have to install a lot of applications on other Windows 7 versions too and if you only use the notebook for Internet and Office I think Windows 7 Starter is enough.
    Furthermore its a good idea the different versions of Windows 7. So you can save money if you dont need all functions.
