Anyconnect 802.1x - "switch user" is blocked in machine authentication

hi all,
I know this is not a bug its a feature
that anyconnect blocks user switching disallowing the computer to have them both logged in. Its desirable and understandable
however
I have an environment where I use only machine authentication and remote helpdesk needs to connect to these machines using some application then they "switch user" to do their tasks (its important not to logoff cause there are some transactions in the background ...)
Is there any chance that the new version of anyconnect will have this feature (maybe its already planned on the roadmap ? )
for machine authentication there should be a checkbox for profile administrator to "allow/disallow users to switch"
or maybe there is already some trick/configuration step that I missed and it can be done?

  • 802.1x for user authentication setup questions

    Hi,
I am fairly new to the 802.1x realm, I have read several documents on how the setup is accomplished and I was hoping someone could validate the setup I have in mind to make sure I am on the right page.  Any comments or assistance would be greatly appreciated, I do not have the infrastructure to test everything before hand.
I have a remote site with a switch and router.  I want to authenticate users using their AD credentials. At the datacenter I will have ACS 5.2, a Windows 2008 enterprise server for AD service and CS service. I do not have the option to install an additional client on the PC like anyconnect, I need to use Windows OS supplicant without installing physcial certificates on the machine.
    - Within the CS service I will generate a certificate that will be imported by ACS.
    - I will activate ACS to integrate with AD
    - I do not want to insall certificates on the client machines so I will use PEAP w/ MSCHAPv2
    - The authenticating clients will be XP w/ SP3, I am hoping that a group policy can be created to enabed the wired service to start automatically and I will also need to add my CS/CA server as a trusted authority unless I purhcase a verisign certificate to be used. Correct? or will this need to be done when the desktop image is installed on the pc?
    Additional Questions:
    - With the setup I described above using MSCHAPv2 when the user boots the computer in the morning, hits ctrl+alt+delete and provides their AD credentials will this act as a single sign on? first authenticating them through 802.1x so the port is authorized and then authenticating them to the AD server? or will there be some type of pop up window that will appear before the ctrl+alt+delete window? making the user provide credentials twice (annoying)
    - Once the user is autheticated can I push an ACL down to the switch to enforce a set policy? or does this happen on the router?
    - Most of the documents I have read are related to L2 802.1x is there a  L3 option that includes the router that I should be looking at to  provide more features?
    - can anyone speak to their experience with the Windows OS supplicants? is the functionality flaky/clunky or if the backend is setup properly it works seamlessly?
Sorry for the long winded post but I am kind of shooting in the dark without having the equipment to test with. Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks

Thanks too you both for the responses.
I have a few followup questions which I have added inline.
    Q:
    - With the setup I described above using MSCHAPv2 when the  user boots  the computer in the morning, hits ctrl+alt+delete and  provides their AD  credentials will this act as a single sign on? first  authenticating them  through 802.1x so the port is authorized and then  authenticating them  to the AD server? or will there be some type of pop  up window that will  appear before the ctrl+alt+delete window? making  the user provide  credentials twice (annoying)
A:  If you select "Use windows credentials" it won't prompt you for credentials. so All automatic.
However  note that it will only login AFTER you entered the credentials on the  logon page. So you won't have network connectivity for the initial  logon, so no login scripts this way.
With your comments I am rethinking my approach, I am considering that if the company security policy will allow it I will do machine authentication only instead of user auth.   Obviously this is not as secure since a rogue user could change the local admin password and have access to the network.  But interms of simplicity and ease of use machine authentication provides a transparent authentication mechanism that should suffice.  I would just have to sell the solution to security.
There a few things I need to understand before persuing this.
    - will the machine be 802.1x authenticated and on the network before the  ctrl+alt+delete? so when user logs in the machine has passed 802.1x  already and has received ip from dhcp? this is my hope.
    - is peap/mschap still the supported protocol so no physical cert is required per machine? no EAP-TLS
    - is the machine profile on the AD server used for 802.1x verification/authentication? meaning ACS will pass off to AD to verify the machine is part of the domain? or do you have to create machine profiles in ACS?
    - I have read a few articles out there about issues with machine auth with clients using XP, perhaps this was related to previous serivce packs before SP3? there was mention of registery changes required etc.
    - is there a different supplicant offered by cisco that is more robust that would provide more stability or is the cisco supplicant cost money per user license or other etc.
Again your feedback is invaluable as I do not have the physical equipment to test with.  Unfortunatly I have to propose a solution before actually testing something which I am not particularly fond of.
    Regards,
    Eric

  • Anyconnect 3 NAM Profile user authentication failure

    Hello,
I use Cisco Anyconnect as a supplicant for my 802.1x enabled network, we use EAP-TLS. I created a wired profile with the standalone profile manager and deployed it to my clients. Machine authentication works fine, but as soon as i log in to the device the user authentication is not working and the anyconnect falls back to an open wired network.
I don't see any logs in my ACS.
But when i create a profile on the device itself the EAP-TLS authentication works without any issues.
    any ideas?
    regards
    alex

    Hello Luke-
I have faced the same issue with MAR (Machine Access Restriction) in the past. It all worked great while we had wireless authentication only but things went out of control once we started to roll out wired
I have been working with ISE for a little bit now and I can tell you that the same issue is still present. It would be pretty nice if they can "fix" this but as of right now you would face the same exact issue. So if you want to do user+machine authentication, you have a couple of options that were recently discussed in this thread:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3775027#3775027
    To answer your other question:
So is there a trick to get NAM to trigger machine re-authentication without having to reboot?
Back when I had this issue I was able to "trick" the native windows client to perform machine authentication again by going to "Start Menu > Shut Down > Switch User." In the new window it is important not to click on the already logged user but to select "New/Different User." There you can still type the same credentials for the already logged user. This seemed to force the machine to pass its machine credentials again without having to reboot the machine which is till not ideal and not user friendly at all but that is all I have Also, do keep in mind that I have not tested this with the AnyConnect client so results may vary.
    Thank you for rating!

  • Users Safe/Block list not working

    Hi guys,
I'm using a Management ironport appliance as external quarantine for two Ironport email security devices (clustering), i have enabled Users Safe/Blocks and simply it is not working.
When the user add email address as white/block to his own list under his quarantine page, nothing change & Safe/Block list is not working.
Any ideas how to solve/troublshoot the issue?
    Regards
    Rami

    Hello Rami,
did you enable the Safelist/Blocklist on the management apliance and the ESAs as well?  If only on the management appliance, then also switch it on on the email appliances under the setting for the external spam quarantine.
    Hope that helps,
    Andreas

  • On screen lock screen, the keyboard does not work, switching to the switch-user screen the keyboard works again

    Mac OS-X 10.7.5, Mac Air.
This began about 5 to 7 days ago.
    Steps to reproduce:
    Step 1:
Close the lid, or the system 'powers down', or goes to the screen saver mode.
    Step 2:
Open the lid, press the power button, or what ever to wake up the Mac Air
The "Enter your password" screen is presented.
They keyboard is not responsive, I cannot type anything.
The touch pad works, I can power on/off the machine.
    They keyboard is not functional.
Result: I cannot log in again.
Expected behavior: The keyboard should be working I should be able to unlock the screen.
    Workarounds:
Then click on my name, or any other user of the machine and it works fine.
I can now unlock the screen and return to where I was.
    Expected behavior:
I should not have to go to the "Switch User Screen" to log back in.

    More detail:  Some keys on the keyboard do work, ie: caps lock toggles the led, and the function keys across the top seem to work {that is I can adjust brightness, and so forth}
the letter and numbers, and perhap others do not work.

  • How come the switch user option is missing from my lock screen?

I upgrade to Lion my iMac Core 2 Duo and now when I lock the screen the switch user option is missing from the lock screen, you just have to cancel o renter as the original user, so that if another member of my family wants to switch and use the mac he or she cannot do it.
This is what I am talking about (image taken from a lion review): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/134544/forum/Schermata%2007-2455766%20alle%2011.05.12.pn g
The switch user option is totaly absent, I just have the cancel.
It that a bug or what?
Please note this happens only when I lock the screen from the screensaver, i.e. requesting the password to restart from the screensaver, if I get to the login windows all users appears correctly and people can switch back and forth.
    Thank you.

I just talked to apple support.  They said Lion doesn't support this feature.  They gave me a work-around, which was to disable requiring a password in the screen saver.  Then enable user switching so it appears in the top right of the banner.  Note that since the screen saver no longer locks the screen, in order to actually lock the screen the user must click on the upper right user list and select something like "Login user...".
This issue has left me disappointed with apple for a few reasons.  Hopefully someone at apple will take note:
    1. Apple removed a useful feature.
    2. Apple did not provide a response to this thread which would have been the best forum to inform users of this change.  It would have saved me and apple one long phone call.

Safari 4 Crashes At Start-Up - However Safari Works When I Switch User Accounts to a minimalistic non-admin acct with zero log-in items. I'm not sure how to best troubleshoot this. Safari 4 is up and running now. I deleted the Sogundi and it started to open but froze... so I deleted all of the files in that folder and ait still froze (not just hanging but froze) then I delelted the Safari.com plist in Library/Pref's and that seemed to work - it doesn't feel totally stable but I'll keep using it and let you know if the problem is totally solved...thank you!... I'm totally impressed that I actually got a help response from Apple - I'm astounded actually - this is the first time I"ve posted a question to the Apple forum and really appreciate the fast response!! Wow I really love Apple now.... can't image Windoze users getting this kind of help.

  • ISE 1.3 Why are Windows endpoints defaulting to 802.1x machine authentication in wireless profile and not User or User&Computer

We are running ISE 1.3 tied to AD with WLC 7.6.130.0.  Our ISE has a GoDaddy (none wildcard) certificate loaded for https and EAP.  We are just running PEAP.  We have a mix of IOS, Android, and Windows 7/8 devices.  IOS and Android devices can self create a wireless profile and after entering credentials can connect without issue.  Our Windows 7/8 devices, when auto creating a wireless profile are selecting 802.1x machine authentication instead of User authentication or the best option which is machine or user authentication.  This is problematic as we do allow for machine authentication but have an authorization rule limiting machine auth to domain controller and ISE connectivity only.  This is to allow domain Windows 7/8 devices to have domain connectivity prior to user sign-in but force user auth to get true network connectivity.  The problem is why are the Windows devices not auto setting to user authentication (as I think they did when we ran ISE1.2), or the best option which is to allow both types of authentication?  I have limited authentication protocols to just EAP CHAP and moved the machine auth profile to the bottom of the list.  Neither have helped.  I also notice that the Windows 7/8 endpoints have to say allow connectivity several times even though we are using a global and should be trusted certificate authority (probably a separate issue).
Thank you for any help or ideas,

When connecting a windows device to the ISE enabled SSID when there is not a saved wireless profile on that machine, it will connect and auto create the profile.  In that profile, 802.1x computer authentication option is chosen by windows.  That has to be changed to computer or user for the machine to function correctly on the network.
On 1.2, this behavior was different.  The Windows device would auto select user authentication by default.  At other customer sites, windows devices auto select user authentication.  This of course needs  to be changed to user or computer in order to support machine auth, but at least the default behavior of user authentication would allow machines to get on the network and functional easily to begin with.

How do I fix a slow imac on start up and when switching user?  The blue screen will stay on for 3-5 minutes.

How much free space do you have on your hard disk? And have you ever performed a backup & clean install after an OS X upgrade?

  • Popup printing message when switching users

I'm giving my old Air to my brother, so I set up a new account for him.  When I log in to the new account, I get the following message:
Failed to listen for incoming Popup Jobs. You will not be able to use Popup printing for the duration of this session. Please report this incident to a system administrator
It appears in a small window.  Every few seconds, an identical window will come up; by a minute, the screen is filled with them!
A bit of Googling indicated I should remove Pharos software.  I tried that--I looked in the appropriate library folder--and nothing was there.  Also, this problem didn't exist on my old account.  (Pharos doesn't show up in my login items either.)
Weirder still, if I restart the computer and choose my brother's account at the login screen, it opens error-free.  But then, if I switch back to MY account without restarting, I get the same pop-ups!
It's a pain to have to restart to switch users.  Someone please help!

Ok, so it turned out it was Pharos.  At first, when I did what the post below said, I could not find the uninstaller.  It turns out it's a hidden file.  Tech support told me to open Finder, press cmd+shift+g, type /Library/Application Support/Pharos/Utilities and press enter.
This way, I did find the uninstaller.  I ran it, uninstalling both components, and afterwards everything is fine.

  • How to switch off screen blocking if I forget password and couldn't use iTunes?

How to switch off screen blocking if I forget password and couldn't use iTunes?

If you are saying that you've forgotten the passcode to unlock the iPad then you will need to connect the iPad to the computer that you normally sync to and you should then be able to reset the iPad and restore/re-sync your content to it (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212) - you may need to put the iPad into recovery mode for your iTunes to be able to reset it : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
If you do it via a different computer then :
If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.

  • Strange Graphics issue on switching users after awaking from sleep

As the title says... Here's the scenario:
I logon to my MBP, do some work, then put it to sleep.
My girlfriend comes along, and opens up the MBP. My logon details are presented to her, so she presses "Switch User".
When she does this, the MBP goes really funky. Loads of strange colors, some small areas of my logged in desktop appear, then loads of white cubes appear.
    See:
    http://www.rock-sound.net/stevetemp/stage1.jpg
    http://www.rock-sound.net/stevetemp/stage2.jpg
Can anyone else confirm this happens on their MBP ? Otherwise Genius Bar here I come..

This happened on my iMac G5 and had the logic board and display replaced to no avail. Only happened when switching users.
Not happening on my MacBook Pro ... so far....and hope it stays like that.
Someone also said it might be to do with bad capacitors.

  • Unable to Switch Users on Window 8 Start Screen

I can not switch users from the Windows 8 Start Screen.
Previously when I clicked on the current user Icon in the upper right corner, all the users were displayed for selection.
Now it just displays a pull-down menu (1) Change account picture, (2) Lock and (3) Sign out.
When I (3) Sign Out the display turns black then returns with the current user sign in screen.

I am having the same problem, only there is NO option to Select Other User.  This is the second time this issue has happened and I would like to know how to re-enable the option to switch to another user without refreshing the PC.
