Anyone actually tried out the gaming performance?

Hey so I'm looking to get a new MacBook and was just hoping someone out there already to have one could slap something like the doom3 demo in just so we could hear first hand what its like. I realize its not a gaming computer and I'm not hoping for 40fps at high on graphically intense games, gaming will not be the main use of the laptop if I get one, I am just curious to hear how it is. I have actually gone throught the doom3 demo on my emac (despite the fact it is way below the requirements) with everything turned down and it wasn't bad as long as nothing onscreen moved. Anyways it would be cool to hear what game you tried, what kind of settings and whether it was smooth or a little choppy or what.
Thanks,
Steve

I installed Warcraft on my wife's new MacBook. It is the low end model (1.83ghz) with 1gb of RAM. She was happy with the performance. I was not impressed.
Here are some metrics. I bumped all settings down to the minimum. The shader options are not available as integrated intel video *****. The terrain distance option was bumped to the 1/4 position (meaning just a bit longer than the shortest viewable terrain distance). No vertical sync. Hardware cursor and mouse were both enabled.
Machine lag was not an issue. Stormwind and Ironforge both were responsive enough, even when crossing into the drop zone near the Ironforge Auction house.
The framerates were not very good though. In heavily populated areas it was looking at 14-24 frames per second. It was smooth "enough" but anything less than 24 frames makes it not look as smooth.
The framerates in other areas was better but still not great. Now, it's time for a comparison...
Her Sony Vaio V505-DX with an onboard ATI 9200 at only 32mb performs much better at the same settings. The game is always played with shaders turned on, terrain about the same and all other settings on low. It always manages at least 30 frames per second.
The machine if you're curious:

I'd say the move to using integrated video was a poor decision. I don't expect crazy performance but this move has further pushed the Mac away from mid-range gamers and potentially game developers. I would not game on one. My wife games maybe an hour or two an evening (we don't watch much TV) so this is an alright fit for her.
If Apple really wanted to bring the games to the Mac platform they would make it attractive to both parties (developers and consumers) but I don't feel they did a good job on that one.

All I can say is the books I've created as gifts to my children for their children were received with absolute joy and appreciation (each book chronicled in pictures  the first year of each grandchild's life). Granted the sentimental factor had a lot to do with the recipient's enjoyment of the book but they were spetacular. The book with its glossy dust cover is a very impressinve way to present your photos.
As Larry has pointed out so many have posted here that they were very satisfried with their book and Apple is very good about correcting problems.
To make sure there are no errors in the book before you order preview the book as described in this Apple document: iPhoto '11: Preview a book, card, or calendar before you order or print it. If the PDF file shows no errors, either in text typos (my biggest problem) or in missing photos, etc., the printed book will be error free.

"If VoiceOver is on and the screen is black, but you can still use the device by pressing volume up and volume down, you may have screen curtain on. Try triple-tapping using three fingers on the device display to turn off screen curtain. Or connect the device to iTunes"

  • How do I actually print out the background fill in a table's rows?

    Hi guys and gals,
I have been trying to figure out this one for a while now and need some help in diagnosing it. I have a table with alternating colour fill on so that the first row is shaded grey, the next not, the next grey ad infinitum. Now if I print the document to Preview as a PDF then the alternating colours appear. If I then print that PDF document to paper the rows print with the correct alternating fill. If however I try printing the Pages '09 document straight to paper the rows all print out with no fill colour
I cannot seem to find an option anywhere to say "display but don't print the fill in this cell / row". Is there a setting in Pages? I have been through the Inspector thing with a fine-toothed comb but I'm obviously going blind. Or is this a quirk of my printer? If I print an image then it prints the colours ok with no scrimping to save ink. Again I cannot find a setting on the printer to disable the cell / row fill when actually committing a document to paper
    So in summary:
Alternating fill produces stripey table on the screen
Printing to PDF shows a stripey table and can be printed to paper with stripes
Printing from Pages '09 to paper removes the stripes
I'm on the very latest version of Lion and Pages '09. My printer is an HP PSC 2179 with up to date drivers etc
Would love some help on this one and a virtual jeroboam of vodka to anyone who can resolve the issue
    Cheers,
    Andy

    Hi Andreas,
I think you have nothing into SAP to find the structure of a cluster table.
The way I use, is to find a standard program that use this cluster, and I look in the ABAP code the structure used by SAP.
You just have to use the ST05, and use the option to see the code where the cluster has been readed.

  • Has anyone actually tried to upgrade Academic to 2.0?

I realize that you are not suppose to be able to do this but I was wondering if anyone has actually tried to perform the upgarde from Academic 1.0 or 1.5 to 2.0?

I bought Educational v1 in Australia from the Apple store (Was an OTEN student at the time), and I upgraded last week to v2 no problems.
But... Although I only paid the educational price for v1, the box and serial stickers all say "Aperture 1.0 retail".
I'm thinking that in Australia at least, the educational/academic version is just the retail version sold at a discount. Maybe the market's not big enough here to justify stocking 2 versions of the same product.

  • ITunes upgrade ver. 9 and Windows - Can anyone actually Connect to the STOR

Is there anyone out there that actually can access the iTunes store after they upgraded to ver 9 and is running it on Windows XP ???

Works for me. Are you running any of Symantec's (Norton) or McAfee's Internet security products or anything similar, or an antivirus/antispyware application? There have been reports that some such utilities treat an upgrade to iTunes as a new application and can block the application from connecting. So you have to go in and reset the utility to allow iTunes. The same thing can happen if you upgrade the security product (this has particularly been a problem with recent McAfee upgrades).
Check the settings for your utility. If iTunes is still listed, remove and re-enable the exception for iTunes. Consult your utility's documentation for the appropriate procedure; you can find instructions for Norton on Symantec's web page for iTunes. In some cases users have reported needing to uninstall the utility completely and reinstall to get it to allow iTunes through. You may also need to check the built-in Windows firewall as well.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards.

  • The problem with the gaming performance

i am usin hp 15-g206ax notebook and it have a quadcore processor and 4gb ram and a 2gb graphic card but its gaming performance is not good Please tell me what i can do for improving the gaming performance

There is not much to be done. You have the AMD HD 8570M graphics with dedicated video memory. That is in the lower middle of the spectrum as far as gaming is concerned. Way better than most laptops but way less powerful than a true gaming machine. Just keep the drivers current is about all. Turn down visual effects. There is no upgrade possible for the hardware.

  • Has anyone actually tried the BluetoothDemo demo?

It works fine via emulatorm no matter how many connections I create, but when i transferred it to my K700i it doesn't seem to work. When I select Server nothing happens.
So i tried it on a Nokia 6600 and it works, but then it doesn't show the list of images available for pblishing. It just shows [no data].
I'm trying to make a basic tictactoe program utilizing the JSR-82 API, and I'd like to use the demo as a guide, but if it doesn't work....

  • I'm trying out the environment.....

...And I have a question. For the Audio Objects that become Audio tracks, what would one use the cabling feature for? Examples would be great!
I haven't used the environment up until today because I always looked at it like opening up my sound board and blindly moving things around. I received the macprovideo logic bundle for christmas and just got around to the Environment video and am really less afraid now then I was yesterday. So I thought I would jump in.
    Thanks.
    X

    X-man,
Ah, the environment. Fresh air, beautiful countryside, the place where boys and girls of all ages can experience the thrill of Cable Junction where faders, buttons, cable splitters, and transformers are at your beck and call. Holiday packages start at $999!
On "blindly moving things around"...  ;-)
The first thing to know is that the environment is really one big space -- like a warehouse -- where all of the various environment objects are stored (instruments, transformers, audio objects, and so on). In a typical setup there are dozens of objects, and if you were forced to view them all at once it would be a bit overwhelming and require a lot of scrolling to navigate through them. So to make it easier to deal with all of these objects, the environment has what are called "layers"; each layer is like a floor in multi-story warehouse. Audio objects are all housed on one floor, the instruments on another floor, and so on.
There is a special layer called the "all objects" layer which shows you the warehouse's entire inventory. When you view this layer and 2-click on one of the items listed, it will switch to the layer where that object was placed.
But layers aren't like walled rooms with no way in or out. Cables can be freely run between objects in different layers. So you can create a button in, say, your Clicks & Ports layer for the purpose of bypassing FX plug-ins. You can then run multiple outputs from this one button to audio objects in the Audio Layer and even the Instrument layer, and bypass their FX plugs from the one button.
Keep in mind also that there are no hard and fast rules that dictate, for example, that an audio instrument object can only live in the Instrument layer. If you found it more convienient to view your instruments in the same layer as your audio tracks, for example, you could move them to the Audio layer. It wouldn't change anything about Logic's performance. All it does is put the instruments on the same "floor" as your audio tracks.

  • HT201304 oh, my God. Was anything ever so poorly explained as the use of one id for multiple devices? who, where can anyone help sort out the mess that has developed?

I have used my iphone 4s for over a year. Recently, I bought two ipod touch devices, one for each of my children. While attempting to set up their ipods, even with email advice from apple, we have become utterly confused as to whose apple id is on whose phone/ipod, why some apps automatically appear on two devices but not on the third (it varies). Most worryingly, in app purchases is DISABLED on my iphone but my children can still purchase in-app purchases without my knowledge and have run up bills (fortunately not huge bills). Why would anyone want to allow this???? If I have consciously disabled in app purchases under my apple id on my iphone, why would the default on another device be to allow in app purchases, when using my apple id?
When setting up my children's apple ids, I wanted them to have their own apple id to avoid this kind of confusion but we got warnings that they were not allowed to have an apple id (presumably too young?) . But they have got their own ipods and should be able to purchase items using itunes cards so why cant they have an independent apple id? And what's the difference between the apple id and the itunes id?
Is there anyone who can help clear up this mess?

You have to diasable in app purchases on the device itself, NOT the id.
If you want in app purchases disabled on the ipods, then you will have to do this on the ipods themselves.

  • Trying to improve gaming performance

Hi, I own a Macbook that is about 3 years old now. I've been playing World of Warcraft, and while I read that other Macbook users push about 30-35fps, I get a whopping 12-15fps in quiet areas. I have a GMA X3100 graphics card.
ALL of my settings are set to the lowest, which I have no qualms about, it's just that I get a little sick of all the lag. My latency is low as well, usually running around 30-50 at most. What's going on? Why can't my Macbook run as well as the others?

The Late 2007 model 3,1 and the Early 2008 model 4,1 were the only models to use the GMA X3100 Video chip. More RAM would help with your gaming speed. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.
    Model 3,1 (Late 2007) can handle 4gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
    Model 4,1 (Early 2008) can handle 6gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM

  • A PPC Motion user tries out the Intel machines

    Hi Guys,
Ive been seriously thinking about the intel,octo,3.0 Ghz machne as an upgrade to my current config of two PPC G5-quad, 16 gigs of ram-X1900, bla, bla, bla.
Recently I had a chance to work on 2 of those Intel machines... extensively. After several days of beating those things to death and running M3 thru the ringers this is what i came up with.
    Stability:
I find that the PPC quad was far more stable than the intels running M3, In fact I found constant stalls,, crashes, and tons of little bugs depending on what your doing.
    Real time playback.
Realtime playback kicked *** until I through a few layers of text at them. One project had over 90 layers w/ behaviors and stuff. and that really killed it.. actually that would kill most.
The intel machines ran cooler, and when it came to compressing tons of content it was awesome!
However, After nearly two days of trouble shooting machines, crashes, command delays and that kind of thing I was forced to take my work home to work on the PPC machines which yield a more constant, far less frustrating effortless workflow. Quick example: What took me nearly six hours to try and complete, took 4 hours delivered to client. because of the stability.
So, as bad as I want a few new Octo's stuffed with everything you can put in the thing... I think Im gonna wait for the next round of desktops. Maybe by then the marriage of software and hardware will actually meet somewhere in the middle for a less frustrating experience.

If it works......it works! There's no need to do spending where not necessary... I wish somebody told me that when I was attending art school... -_-

  • I am trying out the free trial photo elements 13, and i have edited some pics and now i am trying to burn the pics onto a dvd. how do i do that?

and i have a laptop computer with windows 7

iDVD can only use your startup hard disk for the "scratch space" it needs for calculations during the encoding process.  25 GB is a good average requirement, but a large project (3 or 4 hours of content) might require more.
To free up space, you will have to move items to an external hard drive and/or delete items you no longer want.
Please note that iDVD can't use and external hard drive for this "scratch space".

  • Has anyone ever tried ordering the battery from here?

I apologize to everyone for posting again. I just thought maybe this would be helpful? Am canceling my shipment to apple for the battery replacement and ordering it from here instead. The video is good and easy to understand and it didn't look complicated in opening up the iPod. I usually order most of my accessories from this site, so I trust it so far. Hmmm....a huge risk here eh? At least it's better than paying $72.
    http://www.theistore.com/newer3g.html#

I've bought quite a few things from Newer Tech - though not an iPod battery. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them. And you are right, the replacement isn't all that hard. Opening the case is a bit fiddly and if your fingers are short and stubby like mine plugging the new battery in can be challenging. (I use a pair of non-conducting forceps.)
Personally, I think you've made the right choice. You have a known working iPod without issues and replacing the battery isn't difficult. I think it is a better solution than getting an iPod of unknown provenance.
