Anyone back-up iTunes or iPhoto using new TC?

Just curious if anyone has used it to back up those applications. That is the main reason why I have bought the TC. Wireless access for the whole family to iPhoto and Itunes. ??

You are actually referring to two different things:
1. backup up applications (and presumably data). The purpose of backing up applications and data to a different drive (like the Time Capsule) is to provide a place to restore this data from if something happened to this information on your Mac (for example, the hard drive fails). The Time Machine application in MacOS 10.5 will do these backups to the Time Capsule for you automatically. Keep in mind these are backups - and the backup data is not intended nor is it easily available for "sharing" with other computers on your home network.
2. wireless access for the whole family to iPhoto and iTunes. This is a very different usage for the Time Capsule. In this case, you would copy the iTunes and/or iPhoto data files to the Time Capsule, and make the shared library available to users of the iPhone and iTunes application running on other computers on your home network. You need to copy those files - this is not a function of the Time Machine backup application.

Can I backup my photos from iPhoto using terminal or any other way(to a portable hard drive) as I have turned my laptop on and it has came to a screen giving me the option to back up from time machine, reinstall IOS or clean my drives, but neither are working so I believe I am going to have to erase my whole hard drive and potentially get a new one, but my only problem is that I haven't backed up my iPhoto images before so is there anyway I can do this?

  • Unsure how to copy current contents of iPod back to iTunes for future use

Had a system failure that required operating system upgrade to Windows Vista. This left iPod with orphaned content that does not show on iTunes. Am afraid that if I put new content on the iPod, the old would now be gone forever. Looking for a ready-access backup version to be held on iTunes such that it can be reloaded at any time.
P.S. - Also, under Vista and iTunes 7, I no longer seem to be able to create new/distinct playlists.
    Thanks...

If you've lost all of the music you had saved on your pc and it only survives now on your iPod, then one of the easiest ways to repopulate iTunes with the music from your iPod is to follow the instructions on this thread...

As for backing up iTunes, check out Apple's technical article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302392 on how to do this. I think there are other methods of doing it as well. Search this forum and you'll find lots of discussions about it.

  • Backing up itunes and iphoto

I have a mac mini (iPhoto '08) and a macbook (iPhoto '06 ) that have some separate and some of the same photos. I was wondering what is the best way to back up each library and how to do that. Also,
    1) If I just back up each library to an external hard drive, would either library open in any version of iPhoto or would the '08 library version need iphoto '08 and so on...?
    2) When you back up an iPhoto library to a separate hard drive, do you have to have iPhoto to open that backup file or can you use..say preview to view them?
Same question for iTunes. I have iTunes on both the mac mini and the macbook which are not synced completely with each other due to running out of hard drive space. What is the best way to make a backup of each library from each computer or should/can I make just one backup of both libraries on a separate hard drive without duplicating and songs.
    Thank you for your help.
    Jimmy

    Just a comment:
    1) If I just back up each library to an external hard drive, would either library open in any version of iPhoto or would the '08 library version need iphoto '08 and so on...?
A newer iPhoto version can open older iPhoto Libraries, but not vice versa. And after a newer iPhoto has opened an older iPhoto Library, the older version will no longer be able to open it.
What is the best way to make a backup of each library from each computer or should/can I make just one backup of both libraries on a separate hard drive without duplicating and songs.
That is impossible. Backing up two machines and avoiding duplicates are mutually exclusive goals. A backup should be a safety copy of your system that allows you to restore the system as it is. So it will contain duplicates from files on other machines, if there are duplicates on both machines.
The simplest solution to your backup problem would be to setup Time Machine  on both computers  to regularly backup your macs to an external drive. Get separate drives for both machine and let them connected, and all will be automatic, for iPhoto and for iTunes as well.

  • I cannot find my old itunes library.  Using new computer but no clue how to access library

It has been ages ( 5 years) since I use my itunes account. All my old computers are dead. Downloaded the most recent itunes software on new computer but when I sign in to my old account info is correct but no library. Any ide how to access and get old library onto new computer?

If you are in the US and if the songs are still available in the store and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy them, then you should be able to re-download them for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
If you are not in the US and for any music from your own CDs that you copied, then have you not got backups on, for example, external drives and or CDs/DVDs that you can copy onto your computer and then load into iTunes ?

  • How do i save a photo from iPhoto onto flash drive using new lion software

Trying to save a photo in iphoto (using new lion software on my mac) to a flash drive.  There is no save button and can no longer just drag the photo into the drive.  Any ideas.

You can select the thumbnail and type Command+C to copy it.  Then click on the Desktop and type Command+V to paste it.  That will get you the latest version of the photo in iPhoto.
However, you should be able to drag the photo to the desktop.  Launch iPhoto with the Option and Command keys held down and rebuilt the library with the first and last options selected.
If that doesn't do the trick use Disk Utility to repair disk permissions.

  • New computer and setting up itunes and sych iphone new to new computer

    hi guys,
Just formatted my hard drive i did backup the iTunes folder inthe c:\users\name\my music\c folder e.g. apps music etc and i did also backup the apple computer folder in the c:\users\name\ app data\roaming\applecomputer folder(which has the iPhone and iPad backups in it),
I have just formatted my hard drive how do i restore iTunes? do you just authorise the computer and then click and drag the music folder into iTunes so all the apps and music go into iTunes and then do you copy and paste the apple computer folder (from the app data folder) to the new computers app data folder? then just plug in the iPhone and sych?
    http://blog.deversus.com/2011/02/how-to-sync-iphone-with-new-computer-windows-to -mac/
i did some reading and couldn't find much on how to restore iTunes from a backup there is heaps showing how to back it up! I did find this in the apple discussion forum. ( i think its for people who havennt made a copy of the applecomputer folder.
I just want to recover my itunes so i can just plug in my iphone and i dont loose data from when i did the backup 2 weeks ago, i can just plug in and contine like being on my old computerI
(By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from her phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you are replacing your GF's computer, her phone will see this computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to her phone or music ripped on her own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from her phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:
    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
    1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under Preferences>Devices in itunes(under the edit menu if using Windows).
    2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications(Address Book, iCal) on your computer. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
    3. Connect her phone, iTunes running, do not sync at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on her phone will be in her itunes library).
    6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
    7. Right click again and select backup.
    8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore her itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding her contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.)
    What do you guys reckon?
    Thanks!

This is the process I would have recommended:
Backup your library using this User Tip.
Deauthorise the old computer if you won't be using it for iTunes.
Restore the library into the music folder on the new computer.
Install iTunes and sign in to your account.
For the "restore" process you can either just copy the backed up iTunes folder into the new computer or install and set up SyncToy to manage the transfer. If you install iTunes before restoring the library then you should delete/rename the existing empty iTunes library in your profile's music folder first.
Reconnecting an old iOS device backup set into a new iTunes installation is actually quite tricky, but provided the library has been properly conserved it is an unnecessary step. A library transferred as outlined above will be the same library the device was previously synced with, albeit on a different computer/operating system, and there should be no problem syncing media or apps. Info content such as calendar and contacts may need a little more care to make sure the same applications have as used previously have been installed and their data restored to them.

  • It appears my kid has erased my entire iTunes and iPhoto libraries.  Anyone know how to get them back?

My kid has erased my entire iTunes and iPhoto libraries.  Does anyone know how to get them back?

WIthout a backup of your data previously, they are all gone.
The only option you have now is data recovery.
You need to purchase, download, install and use a data recovery app like this.
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
You need to completely stop using your computer ASAP, at this point and just run the data recovery app and let it do its thing.
Every moment that you keep regularly using your computer risks rewriting new data in the locations where your deleted data may still reside.
A very expensive and time consuming lesson to be learned here.
Purchase and connect up a large capacity external hard drive (a drive larger than your Mac's internal hard drive) preferably a hard drive that uses FireWire 400/800 connection and use a data cloning app like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make yourself a exact, bootable copy of your Mac's internal drive to the new external hard drive.
This will be your data backup drive.

  • Hi I have lost all my contacts, can I manually back up somehow, the new iTunes I'm using doens't have the same as the old one where it had a 'contacts' heading and also able to back up from specific date

    Hi All,
Can anyone help me restore all my old contacts please?
I bought a new phone for my Daughter, set it up to my iTunes account as she is only 11 and all of my contacts synced to her phone, so we went in and deleted them all, problem was, they deleted off my phone over wifi apparently,,, not good I can't find a way to get them back
    Thanks

You did more than sync the new iPhone with iTunes since syncing with iTunes does not include text messages.
The first time a new iPhone is connected to iTunes that is used to sync with another iPhone or iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device or set up the device as a new iPhone.
The former replaces all data on the iPhone that is included with the selected backup for the other iPhone or iOS device. The latter does not.
If a backup for your new iPhone was not created with iCloud or if created and has been updated since the backup was transferred from the other iPhone or iOS device, the previous data on the new iPhone is gone.

  • How to use used backed up itunes on new computer?

I've been searching and searching and I can't find a specific answer to what I need to do.  This is what I want to do.
I have a Macbook pro and I want to create a new itunes library for my husband to use for his library.  Easy enough, I found instructions on creating a new library.
My husband already has an extensive library on an old PC that is on it's way out the door.  So I want to transfer his current itunes library to an external hard drive.  Have instructions on how to do that!
Now all would be fine and good if I then just wanted to take his backed up itunes library from the external hard drive and import into his newly created itunes library on my computer..HOWEVER, I don't want all his music stored on my macbook's hard drive and I want his itunes library to remain on the external hard drive.  I want to point that new library to the external hard drive, so whenever he adds to it, it is stored on that external hard drive.
How do I do this?  When i initially create his library do I point it to the external hard drive.  Then copy the backed up version into that itunes folder?  Or can I point the library directly to the backed up version.
I'd appreciate any suggestions.  I know I could probably figure this out by trial and error.  But if someone has done this I'd really appreciate a straighforward appraoch.
    Thanks everyone!

I use an excellent free application called Sharepod, http://www.getsharepod.com/about/ which will transfer all your music from your iPod to your PC, then you import this into iTunes. Just use the Backup iPod mode in Sharepod, and make sure it is pointing to the right destination folder. Test one track or album before you transfer everything.
After this is complete add all the transferred music to iTunes. If you use Automatic be careful because syncing this will then erase everything on your iPod and transfer it back again from your PC! If you manually sync no problem.
Be careful as an automatic sync to your new iPod will wipe it clean! BEFORE you connect your new iPod to iTunes go to iTunes and change this option to prevent this:
    +Edit-Preferences-Devices-Uncheck "Disable automatic syncing..."+
Your other music that is on cd's, just copy them into your My Music folder and then add them to iTunes.
    Good luck!

  • Is it possible to have two hard drives connected to my airport extreme and use one to store my itunes library/iphoto and the other to backup via time machine?  Will the second (larger) drive back-up both my mac HD and my other external airport drive?

For the past year I've been using an external hard drive (HD1) connected to my airport extreme as the back-up location for time machine.  This has worked fine without any issues.  What I would like to do now is to move my itunes and iphoto libraries off of my laptop (space constraints) and store them on a second external hard drive (HD2) connected to the airport extreme.  I have successfully connected the second hard drive using a Belkin powered USB hub.  What I am wondering is if I direct my time machine back-ups to HD1 will it back-up both my mac HD as well as HD2?  I apologize if this has already been answered but i've read conflicting responses on various message boards and a number of responses were dated so I wanted to make sure I received the latest information.

That may be true, but you need to know that backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.  Do not be surprised if those backups suddenly turn up corrupted.
What I am wondering is if I direct my time machine back-ups to HD1 will it back-up both my mac HD as well as HD2?
No.  Time Machine cannot back up from any network location.  The 3rd-party utilities CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly now?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)
