Anyone bought a refurbished macbook???

i am starting to have the jitters after having read all the 'mafunctions' on this site... i am relatively new to Mac and have just ordered a refurbished Macbook Pro 15/2.4ghz... it is due to arrive on Tuesday/Wednesday... now i am wondering if i have made a mistake....
i am currently using my sister's 5 yrs old Powerbook G4... i really enjoy it (though it has some glitches) and am not very tech savvy.... any tips i can get would be FABULOUS!!!!
i need some tips/advise on :-
1) is it a bad move to buy refurbished???
2) what is the best way of transfering my files from Powerbook G4 to Macbook Pro 15/2.4ghz... i am also running Microsoft 2004 on my G4, can that be transfered to my new laptop too (or do i have to buy Microsoft 2008)?
3) the Powerbook G4 glitches online but is normally reliable for managing documents... is there some way i can improve or spruce this old laptop up?

Do you also go into hospitals and get nervous about all the illnesses? These forums are meant for technical problems. Most people never have any.

Not at all. Apple gives the same warranty (1 year) as for their new products, which can be extended to 3 years if you like. I've bought three refurb Macbooks for family, and they've all been cosmetically perfect and trouble-free. There's no guarantee that you won't have problems, just as with new Macs, but there's no difference in quality between the two.

The Migration Assistant will run automatically and help you transfer the files either through Firewire or a network connection.

Max out your RAM, if you haven't already; check your HD space and put in a larger, faster drive if appropriate; try a fresh system install.
Good luck on your purchase!

    Dear Friends,
Hi, I bought a refurbished Macbook 4,1 at present it is running Lion 10.7.5( although it is an older machine circa 2008) I would like to transfer everything from my old machine( early intel Macbook Pro) to the newer machine. My older machine runs Mac OS x 10.6.8 and that allows me run some very old software. Should I make a time machine back up?and restore from that or use Carbon Copy Cloner? to transfer everything, the system, applications and data.
    Thanks for your help

    Here you go:
Connect the two using a Firewire cable. Boot the newer machine in Target Disk Mode. Boot the older one normally. The disk for the newer machine will appear on the older machines's Desktop.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select newer machine's hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      3. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      4. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      5. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the newer machine's drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

I just bought a refurbished MacBook air. It shows delivers march.27-28 via next day shipping  . And now it is still processing order.
    can I receive it tomorrow?

It is certainly possible that you will receive it tomorrow. Apple's refurbished stock is held in many locations, and the item you have ordered may be in a location sufficiently close that shipping today could result in delivery tomorrow.
However, the shipping estimates are only that; estimates. It is just as possible that it will not ship today, possibly not even tomorrow. All you can infer is that once shipped, it is more likely than not to reach you the day after.

  • Bought a refurbished Macbook without operating system.  Trying to get an OS installed but all I get is a white screen??  HELP!

I purchased a refurbished Macbook pro without operating system.
This is my first Mac, but have heard they are very simple and much more intuitive than Windows,
I've had the machine for three weeks now, and it's been nothing more than a paperweight!!
A friend said he had his old install disks, which happened to be exactly what google said I needed to start out as: version 10.5
When I boot holding the OPTION button down, I get two options. Windows (with an up arrow below it) and Mac OS x Install Disk 1 (with an up arrow below it).
I can move the mouse, and move the cursor with my arrow keys, to select either Windows or Mac OS install. The problem is - if I select the Mac OS install,
the disk starts up (I can hear it), but it never does anything. I can no longer move the mouse / cursor after selecting it.  It will stay for hours like this with no progress.
On the disk itself, it says MAC OS version 10.5. This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not be sold separately.
It also says: to start up from Mac OS x, hold down the C key as the computer starts up. When I do that, all I get is a gray screen.
I've also tried the shift key when starting up (supposed to be safe mode?) but same thing - gray screen.
The only way to even eject the disk (scared the heck out of me) is to start up holding the OPTION button.
If I select WINDOWS after using the OPTION button, I get an IBM message:
IBM Secure Data Disposal Utility 2.0
    IBM Remote Deployment Manager 4.1
Date and time of execution...7/24/12 18:01:22
    Command executed................A:\SCRUB3.EXE /d=all /l=2
    Return code...............................0
I assume this is what they used to wipe the hard drive before sending...
Obviously I am Apple-illiterate, but I've spent days going through chat rooms, etc. and came up with nothing.
At this point, I suspect either:
    1) The machine is junk and needs to be returned OR
    2) The disks are bad and/or can't be used for a clean install
I don't want to waste money buying a brand new OS, only to find out that the machine is bad.
    Any thoughts??

That model originally shipped with a special Intel version of Tiger. You should be able to install any retail version of Leopard or later. I would recommend you start with Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard requires a minimum of 1 GB of RAM. If you have 2 GBs of RAM then you could install Lion or Mountain Lion.
You can purchase Snow Leopard from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
    When you receive the DVD:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the Snow Leopard installation.

  • Refurbished Macbook Pro stalled

I bought a refurbished Macbook Pro a couple weeks ago and haven't had any problems with it until the other day. I left a flash drive in the port and woke up the next morning and my computer was stalled and stuck. I tried a couple things (command + alt + esc, etc.) but it kept stalling and getting stuck. So eventually I shut it down and then rebooted and I haven't had a problem since. Has anyone else had this problem before; specifically has it been because of a flash drive or something? Thanks

If this turns out to be a one off you can ignore it, if it recurs then it's time to investigate, especially as your Mac is new.

  • Host of problems on a refurbished Macbook OS X 10.4

I recently bought a refurbished macbook os x from surpluscomputers.com. I have always used a windows pc so the past week has been mostly me trying to get aquainted with how a mac works. There are several things on here that just don't seem right and I'm trying to figure out. Whenever I try to open up iChat, it says that my username and password or invalid. I keep trying to go back in and reset my password etc., but no matter what it says invalid.
The battery charge does not last long, even though I charge it all night long. Now I've recently started keeping the charger in whenever I'm not using the macbook so we'll see how that works.
I've tried downloading flashplayer and itunes 9 and it will download but then something goes wrong in the installation process and says it can let me use this form. My macbook is a OS X 10.4 so can I only use a certain one of iTunes and flashplayer?
Sometimes my screen saver works and sometimes it doesn't.
For the fist week I could not open up a script editor page that I typed. I saved it in Documents but it would not let me open it back up to retrieve it or start another one. I don't know what I did today but for some reason I can open it again and type.
I did however download firefox this morning and certain things got better, for instance the script editor opened up again and certain websites looked better like facebook and youtube. But now my firefox web browser shuts down every time I open up my business website. It's been doing that for two days on safari as well and I can't work because it just shuts down every time I go to my business website.
Please help! I'm not the best computer wiz. Anybody have any ideas?

RecoverTeam, welcome to the forums (and to the Mac World!). Let's see if we can get your issues dealt with. I've got a few questions that will help pinpoint the troubles:
1)Did you receive any installation discs with this computer? If not, contact Apple and order replacements right away, as you'll need them in the future.
    2) Exactly which version of OS X 10.4 do you have? Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner & then choose *About This Mac*. Underneath the text *Mac OS X* you should see the word version followed by 10.4.x. What's listed for the x?
    3) For iChat, are you using an AOL Instant Messenger screenname and password?
    4) For your battery, let's check on the health. Open *System Profiler* in Applications>Utilities, then click on Power in the left-hand column. Copy the battery information and paste it here.
We'll look at the iTunes, Flash and browser issues once you've answered the questions I have so far You may need to update your computer's operating system before those issues can be resolved.

  • Refurbished MacBook Pro 13 inch?

I just recently bought a refurbished MacBook Pro 13 inch through the Apple's website. The laptop itself is amazing - absolutely clean, no marks no nothing.  Being a PC user all my life, I decided to switch to Mac since I've heard great things about the battery life. A day or two after use, I noticed that the battery started to die extremely fast. Which made me think "what the __?". I did install Mountain Lion on it. So I waited a few more days and continued to have the same problem - it would go for 2 hours at the most (which is what my PC did). I went to the Genius Bar at my local Apple store and got my battery replaced since I had JUST bought this a week ago. The guy told me that my battery's life was dropping insanely and replaced it for me. This was two days ago and since then, I haven't really noticed a dramatic difference. I use my MacBook for just small things like OpenOffice, Facebook, and some research for school (no gaming or anything). My question is, will I be able to get this thing replaced/exchanged?

Should I tell them the same thing again?

  • Refurbished MacBook Air from Apple with Leopard - Where's AppleWorks?

Yes, it most likely will. Apple refurbished products are great deals. Leopard requires iLife as well, and if you write much iWork`08 is great word processor.

  • Refurbished Macbook Question

I bought a refurbished Macbook Pro from apple.com, and when I went to register it, it said my serial number is registered to another user. How do I change this?

Actually, you can't. Apple will have to make that fix. The computer must have been registered to the original owner who subsequently returned it but failed to remove it from his/her registered hardware page. You cannot register it until that is done, but obviously, you are in no way able to contact the original owner. So call Apple for help:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.

  • Refurbished Macbook Pro without iMovie?

Hi. I just bought a refurbished Macbook Pro 13" with retina and for some reason I can't seem to find iMovie on it? If you could help me that would be great, thanks

Was this refurbished system purchased directly from Apple or through a 3rd party? If it was from Apple it should have been installed, if that is the story and it wasn't installed then Open the Mac App Store and select the purchases tab. It may be available there for free.

  • Do refurbished macbook airs come with pages and the rest of the iLife suite as new macbook airs?

Thinking about adding a refurbished MacBook Air to the stable.   Does anyone know if refurbished macbook airs come with pages the rest of the iLife suite the same as new macbook airs?

They may have iLife pre-installed, but not iWork. In any event you are able to get both for free when you buy a new computer. I don't know if this extends to refurbs. Nevertheless, you should be able to get iWork as a new Mavericks user. If you've already gotten them for your other computers, then the re-downloads are free.
iWork and iLife for Mac come free with every new Mac purchase. Existing users running Mavericks can update their apps for free from the Mac App Store℠. iWork and iLife for iOS are available for free from the App Store℠ for any new device running iOS 7, and are also available as free updates for existing users. GarageBand for Mac and iOS are free for all OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 users. Additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available for a one-time in-app purchase of $4.99 for each platform.

  • Bought a refurb Macbook pro a week ago.  Return it for the new one?

I recently bought a refurbished macbook pro and realize that the new one has just come out.   Give that I am still within the 14 day window to return it is this course of action advisable?   Here are the specs on the refurbished one I just bought for 1600: RFB MBP 15.4/2.3/2X2GB/500/SD/HR-AG-USA     .   Thanks for sage words of wisdom and advice!

However I also like that the macbook pro is upgradable.   My understanding is that the retina one is not.   As the new one is retina I assume it is not upgradable.
There are third party storage options:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Retina_2012
But installing one will void the warranty.  RAM cannot be altered in a retina.
