Anyone Buy the New 8 Core Machine? and Why Over Previous 8 Core ?

i know right now it's probably best to get a older 8 core, but what will it be that logic implements in their software that would make it worth spending the extra money for a new 8 core? 64 bit ? multi threading? and what specifically will the new machines give you that the old ones won't?
would love to hear from some of you who did get a new one and why.
thanks

Well I found out the Quadro FX 4800 works on it, that looks pretty good.
It's a good card, but it has a different application focus.
What applications do you use?
Answering that helps determine what the best card is.
The 5800 is better though, will it work?
Better, how?
The spec's read better?
How about real world performance?
Benchmarks?
They are very similar in shape and such.
Shape has little to do with anything.
The ROM is the key.
If the card is not produced as "OS X compatible", it does not have Mac ROM and cannot be used.
If there is a Mac edition that is similar (same GPU series, similar architecture) the ROM may be flashed to Mac ROM.
Especially in Geforce cards, the ability to edit ROMs and even write portions of the ROM is necessary to be able to flash a card.
Even then, no guarantees.
Often a port on a flashed card won't work after flashing.
Seems the 5800 has a 10 bit display port, so if the card were flashable, the display port wouldn't work.
The ROM chip size of a card is also of concern.
Many cards require either a new, larger ROM chip to accept the Mac ROM (soldering), or, require a hacked, "reduced" ROM to be written to allow flash.
Invariably, there will be some feature loss with a reduced ROM, but a good hacker usually gets rid of superfluous stuff.
Cards with more VRAM than the Mac counterpart will often times lose the extra VRAM- it won't be read by OS X.
Then there is the EFI question, which often creates a final stumbling block for converting a card.
There are many pioneers who flash cards.
If a card is flashable, it has already been done.
The Quadro 4500, 4800, and 5600 have all been worked out.
As of yet, the 5800 hasn't been sussed out for flash (as far as I can find).
Flashing the card is easy.
Finding a physically compatible card and a compatible ROM are the hard parts.
The two best retail cards for the Mac Pro are the Geforce GTX 285 and the Radeon HD 4870.

I have the airport express as router can I buy the new airport express and extend my net?

Things can get confusing pretty quickly since there are 3 different versions of the AirPort Express.
If by "old", you mean you have Model No A1084 or A1088 AirPort Express (look at the label on the side of the device for the Model No), it cannot be used with the "Extend a wireless network" feature of other newer Apple routers.
If your AirPort Extreme is "square" shaped with rounded corners, then the "old" AirPort Express will not work with your AirPort Extreme using the "Extend a wireless network" settings.
You could use a "previous version" AirPort Express, Model No A1264 to "Extend", or the "new" AirPort Express, Model No A1392, for that purpose.
If your AirPort Extreme is a simultaneous dual band product, then the "new" Express would be able to "extend" both bands.  The "previous" AirPort Express (Model A1264) would be able to extend only one band, since it is not a dual band device.

  • Installing the New Virtual Machine and XP Mode in Win7x64 on the Intel 2x E5-2620 Architecture (12 cores, 24 cpus)

I have been hibernating quietly at school with an Intel Core Duo T7300 on XP, and have been insulated from the madness of multi-core processors.  I gather that there were problems with installing the XP Virtual Machine on Vista under Quad architectures,
but that these eventually got resolved in 2009.
The newer problem is concerned with installing the XP Virtual Machine on Win7x64 with greater than four cores in the cpu architecture.  Others have mentioned this problem over this past Summer 2012.  The problem is that at the very last step of
the complete install, Win7x64 reports a failure to install the XP Virtual Machine, and with no further comment.
Apparently KB/2519949 gave a temporary (MSFT qualifies this as "temporary") hotfix solution to this problem for AMD 8-core chips in the Bulldozer series.  However MSFT cautions that this problem requires further research.  This was earlier
    this Summer 2012.
My problem is that I have an Intel 2xE5-2620 duo-processor cpu architecture (2x6=12 cores, 24 cpus in Windows).  The cpu architecture is both Intel, and with far more than the old standard of four cores.  The XP Virtual Machine in Win7x64 will
    not install, as described above.
I have an armload of new 64-bit software all of which has installed pristinely in Win7x64 under this 2xE5-2620 Intel architecture.  However, I have one very important piece of legacy (latest version incompatible beyond XP type of legacy) technical writing
software that is critical to my PhD thesis.  In need the XP Virtual Machine for this, and I have no idea how to get it.  My PhD thesis supervisor also needs this particular piece of "legacy" technical writing software for his new book on Probability
    Theory.

I have news about this issue with XP Mode on Workstation machines.  I have actually known about this for a couple of months, but it has not been until these Christmas 2012 holidays that I have had a chance to follow up with an implementation.
In review, I purchased a Workstation computer for scientific computation purposes this past August 2012.  My chipset is an Intel 2x E5-2620 for a total of 12 cores, and it turns out that this was not the problem for XP Mode.  My OEM shipped this
machine with Windows 7, but without XP Mode, and there is a reason why.
As an aside, it should be mentioned that the main line MSFT OS, Windows 7 or 8, is what I want for this machine, and not Server 2012.  The reason is that most of the scientific computation and technical writing software that I use is written only for
Windows, and not for Server.  Then also hopefully Hyper-V can do in Windows 8 most of what XP Mode is doing for me in Windows 7.
My dealer was able to tell me, when he got back from holidays in late September, that the reason that XP Mode failed to install on this Workstation, and the reason it was not included by the OEM, was that the original HDD configuration was for RAID (3 available
bays) and formatted for drives of at least 1TB in size.  Although the original HDD installation was only a single HDD with only 500GB, the machine was equipped to have something much larger installed.  But this format excluded the possibility of
    XP Mode.
So we changed the hard drive installation to something that I preferred.  We installed Windows 7 on a 480GB SSD, and I installed all my software on this drive, as well as all my important data.  Most importantly, since this drive is less than 1TB,
we could use the MBR format which allows XP mode.  Then we also formatted the original HDD of 500GB in MBR, and decided to run it with Intel RST.  This second drive is for unimportant data, and large files.  For backup we chose a 2TB USB 3.0
external.  In this setting, installing Windows XP Mode was easy, as the only thing we needed to do was modify BIOS to enable virtualization which was part of the Intel 2x E5-2620 chipset already.
I am very pleased with XP Mode. The scientific writing software for my thesis that I was worried about does actually run in Windows 7 under compatibility mode, but there have been some huge advantages to installing in in XP Mode as well. I still have licensed
copies of Office 2003, Acrobat Pro 9, and MathType 5.2, and other old software as well. I now have all new software, for example Office 2010 (64-bit), Acrobat Pro 10 (32-bit for 64-bit), and MathType 6.8 (64-bit), and lots of other things. However, now that
I have my scientific wrtiting software (for which the maker has not caught up with Windows Vista/7) installed in XP Mode, I have also installed WORD 2003 with MathType 5.2 in XP Mode. My scientific writing software can translate WORD 2003/MathType 5.2 in RTF
format to LaTeX. So lets hope these guys eventually catch up with Windows 7 and 8.
I am also using XP Mode to archive a large block of my old data from the XP days. I still have licensed copies of the out of date software. And I would rather not update every single old file I have to a current format. So altogether, XP Mode is working
out quite well.  It is very fast with my Intel 2x E5-2620 and maximum RAM.

  • Anyone buy the new Air Jacket case for the touch?

Just wondering how you liked it. Im considering purchasing one....

I'd never had to reapply it after initial application, but I would just assume it would reapply with no problems. Don't quote me.
As far as installing it without bubbles, don't worry. When you put it on, you use a squeegie that comes in the box to lay down the screen and it gets rid of almost all bubbles. A few bubbles stay but they work themselves out after a couple days. The website told me small bubbles would work themselves out and I was skeptical, but like clockwork all of my bubbles are gone now a few days later.

have the new iphone 4s and the camera shutter wont open so i can not take photos it is only 4 weeks old dose anyone know why?

Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears?
The next step would be to restore the iphone as new in iTunes. If that doesn't work, make an appointment at the Genius Bar at the nearest Apple Store.
    Best of luck.

The above is what the bar says. It's been a while and wondered, maybe Apple changed the format for forums. Then got this nice big blank canvas to air my concerns. Went to school for Computer Science, BSEE, even worked at Analog Devices in Newton Massachusetts, where they make something for apple.
The bottom line is fast CPU = more FPU = more headroom and still can't figure out why the more cores= the slower it gets unless it's to get us in to a 6 core then come out with faster cores down the road or a newer Mac that uses the GPU. Also. Few. I'm the guy who said a few years ago Mac has an FCP that looks like iMovie on Steroids. Having said that I called the campus one day to ask them something and while I used to work for Apple, I think she thought I still did as she asked me, "HOW ARE THE 32 CORES/1DYE COMING ALONG? Not wanting to embarrass her I said fine, fine and then hung up.  Makes the most sense as I never quite got the 2,6,12 cores when for years everything from memory to CPU's have been, in sets of 2 to the 2nd power.  2,4,8,16,32,64,120,256,512, 1024, 2048,4196,8192, 72,768.  Wow. W-O-W and will be using whatever I get with Apollo Quad.
Peace to all and hope someone can point us in THE RIGHT DIRECTION.  THANK YOU

My Question now is this, get an 8 core, then replace with 2 3.7 QUAD CHIPS, what would happen?
I also noticed that the 8 core Mac Pro is 3.0 when in fact they do have a 3.4 8 core chip, so 2 =16? • Why can't I buy the new Iphone?

Is anyone as ****** off as me that I cannot buy the new Iphone without paying $499? I purchased the first phone for $700, the second phone for $500 all on the day they came out. Now Apple will let anyone who didn't buy it before get it for $299 but I gotta pay $200 extra or wait till December. Way to **** off your core group. I plan on buying a new phone every year but if I have to wait till December I might as well wait till next June and get a phone that has 64Gigs of memory. Effectively this policy stinks and I'll spend less on apple products as a result. If anyone knows how to get a message through to the idiots who came out with this brilliant marketing strategy let me know.

The first generation iPhone was not subsidized by AT&T in the traditional way. The 8GB first generation iPhone retailed for $599 when first released, not $699, and Apple provided everyone who paid that price a $100 credit.
The iPhone 3G was/is subsidized by AT&T. Since the first generation iPhone was not subsidized by AT&T in the traditional way, all subscribers who purchased and activated a first generation iPhone qualified for AT&T's upgrade or fully subsidized price for the iPhone 3G when first released, or anytime thereafter. There may have been an exception such as someone purchasing another phone at AT&T's subsidized price within a month before the first generation iPhone was released and keeping the phone.
This same applies to every carrier in regards to subsidized phones. You must fulfill your contract requirement for an existing subsidized phone before you qualify for upgrade or fully subsidized pricing with a new phone. Was the first generation iPhone your first cell phone and cellular service? If not, this should no be anything new.
I was a Verizon subscriber for over 6 years before switching to AT&T before the iPhone was available. The entire time I was a Verizon subscriber, I didn't qualify for Verizon's upgrade or fully subsidized price with a new phone until the last 3 months of my 2 year contract for an existing subsidized phone. I got a new phone every 2 years basically, which is common. If I wanted a new phone every 12 months, I would have been required to pay the full retail sales price for the phone I wanted, or at a higher price that was not fully subsidized by Verizon.

  • Why is it I can't just buy the new iPhone without needing an upgrade?

This has been the most bizarre experience I have ever encountered, and it's enough to put me off Verizon and Apple altogether.
Yesterday, I went to pick up the new iPhone for myself and my wife, having gotten and email that we were eligible for the Early EDGE upgrade. I'm first told at the store that Apple is only allowing 1 phone per person to be sold... Ok, fine. So I get inside and, being the decent gentleman I am, opt to upgrade my wife's line first and will just do mine later that day. Upgrade for her goes smooth, now it's time to do mine. Oh, wait, apparently the EDGE upgrade can be applied to one line, and it was just my wife's; a detail that was cleverly hidden at the bottom of the email in black on grey text after all the marketing copy about how great the new edge program is. The Verizon rep tries to think of ways to get me the phone cheaper, but ultimately can't. I ask if I can just buy the phone at cost, and I'm told no because it doesn't go on sale to the general public until later, though no time is given. Again, Apple's rules.
Now, I'm pretty sure Apple could care less about exactly when someone buys their phone if they have the cash to do so, and I'm doubly sure they don't care about making sure those with upgrades can get the phone. All of this is starting to sound a little iffy. Whatever, I let it slide.
It is now 6pm, still yesterday, and we head into Best Buy to look at cases and see if they have a display 6 Plus to check out, as I'm curious about the size. I ask a Best Buy rep if they have any iPhone 6s left; they do; 128gbs? Yup. Silver??? Yup. VERIZON???? Yup. I'LL TAKE IT! One iPhone 6 at full price please! Oh, wait, no; Apple boogie man says I can't buy the phone for full price, I have to have to qualify for an upgrade. (I'm getting more and more ****** as I'm typing this, FYI). Ok, so now clearly something is amiss. 2 different locations- the official Verizon Store AND Best Buy are telling me I can't buy the phone without an upgrade, and both of them suggesting Early EDGE, even though I have the cash to just buy it. I tweet my frustration to both VerizonWireless and Apple. AC from Verizon Support tweets back sayings they should have let me buy it... Wow, this is ridiculous.
Can someone please clarify this: who is correct here? Is it really Apple playing gate keeper and looking out for those upgrade-only customers? Why is it 2 different places told me the same thing, yet the support rep is telling me something different?
At this point I'm just not going to both attempting to get the phone for a while since this has put me off even trying, but some clarity on just what is going on would be nice. Also, please talk to your Director of Customer Loyalty about his team's email design. While I'm fine with finding out it was just one line, (though I would have preferred both since my wife and I have been on the same account since it opened...), burying that information at the bottom of the email is not going to help retain customers. Expiration dates and other terms of service are fine there, but which line the upgrade applies to needs to be surfaced sooner.

It sounds as if you only had one line with an upgrade available. So you can only upgrade one line. For you to upgrade as well, you will have to wait until your upgrade is available. You can check that at MyVerizon. That's just how it works. All carriers and phone brands are the same. I have to wait until February to upgrade. The only thing you can do to get the new iPhone, is add a new line. But then you're paying for a line you don't need.

Sorry, I can't tell what it is you're trying to ask. What does the warranty have to do with your intention to return the iPad (to whomever) and get another one?
There's no way to deactivate a warranty.
The warranty transfers with the machine, has nothing to do with the owner.
Look around in the Support pages, you can figure out a way to type in your serial number and see what your current warranty status is.

The 2012 iMacs are also in essence glued together and very difficult to disassemble and reassemble. The bottom line is: don't try it.
Why, if I may ask, would you want to remove the 3TB drive and replace it with a 1TB drive? What is it you hope to achieve even if it were possible?

If you are talking about features of the MBP itself, as long as you are not looking at  the Retina models, then the memory you can upgrade yourself for a lot less than Apple charges, and that does not affect the warranty as Apple considers memory a user permitted upgrade.  Great sources are Crucial and OWC, both are Mac specialists and have on-line videos on how to do the install.
If the 15" is what you are looking at, a good upgrade is the 7200 rpm hard drive, gives a little better performance over the standard 5400 rpm drive.
The Hi Res screen is good if you do a lot of graphics work.
Comparing the 13" amd 15" you will notice the 15" has a second, discrete graphic processor...helps when you get into heavy duty videos, games, graphics...but keep in mind that kicking in the second processor uses a lot of power and will run the battery down faster.
If you are looking at the Retina models, then keep in mind there are no post-purchase upgrade options...you have to buy with everything you want at the start.
    Just some thoughts.

So my question is, should I sell this one (which by the way is the i5 2.8 with 1 gb 5750 and 4gb ram) and buy the new imac 27 i5,or keep the one i have and buy more ram. I mostly use my computer for photoshop cs5 and illustrator cs5 for graphics out put as well as surfing the web and music.
Please give me you thoughts on what I should do!!  Thanks  lot!

The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!
