Anyone copy video cam data to DVD successfully?

I have about a million mini-DV tapes from my Sony Digital Handycam that I'm dying to backup on DVDs that can be viewed on our television. The tapes are 60 minutes long. Could anyone out there please give me step by step instructions on how I can get this done--someone that has actually done it successfully?

Seasons Greetings from the Yukon - If your tapes are under an hour in length and require no editing just hook your camera to your mac via firewire, open idvd, click on onestep dvd and follow instructions. Make sure you have lots of hard drive space available, probably double the amount you would need to save project, just to be on the safe side. Otherwise capture and edit them in imovie and send them to idvd for burning. It's actually pretty simple.

  • How can I copy a DVD made from a video camera into a MacBook elsewhere?

I received a DVD made off a relative's MacBook, of her concert. Her friend used a video camera and downloaded it to her Mac, and she then burned it to a DVD for me. I don't have access to her computer. When I tried to copy the folder in the DVD to burn to another, it says it can't burn an alias. Is there some other way I could copy my copy?

    Hi
    Use Disk Util tool
    • Start Disk Util tool
    • Insert the DVD
    • Select it in Disk Util tool
    • Burn a Copy of it

  • Copying/Burning Video Clips from Cmrl DVD w/o Chapters

I've used iDVD to play a cmrl music DVD (without Chapters or menu). I have created video clips that I'd like to copy and burn to a DVD so I can play the
individual songs captured in the video clips. I'm new to OSX and the iDVD
application. I'm willing to buy Toast or MacRipper or other if necessary. Would greatly appreciate any advice anyone would offer. Many thanks, glenn.

    Hi D
You got a miniDV tape - OK
Do You have the Camera - and does it have a FireWire port
same as: (Digital in/out - FireWire (Apple) - IEEE 1394 - i.Link (SONY) - DV Terminal (by Panasonic)
Then connect with a FW-Cable 6-4 pin to Your Mac
    Set in Play mode
    Start iDVD
Select "OneStep DVD" or "Magic Movie"
Put in a DVD-R disk when prompted.
    Sometimes later - Ready !
I use Verbatim DVD-R disks and at an as low x no: as I can get eg x4 (x16 often gives problem
    with any brand of DVDs)
OK You've got iDVD08 - Here You can force the burn speed down to x1 in pref-menu. This gives
    less errors. I do so.
You can also go via iMovie. Use iMovie HD 6. When ready with edit. Close iMovie and drop or import
Your movie into iDVD. Select block diagram and drop Your movie block into the upper most left box.
Now You'll get a self starting movie. But it will end on the theme You selected.
Selecting an as simple menu is a good advice. I use "Bruched metal"
    Select burn.

Thanks for your reply, but you might have misunderstood it a bit. I'm NOT trying to buy a movie. ****, I'm not even in the actual Apple Store, when this happens I'm in the library not the Store part of iTunes.
To clarify - I have purchased a physical copy of a movie which came with another physical copy which contains the digital copy. The digital copy is on the DVD, all I need is just to transfer this file to my iPod Touch, for example, I'm not trying to download it from the store or repurchase it and it's not any gift code that I've received, the digital copy is on the disc. This is the first time ever that I've purchased something on a disc and I'm not allowed to access it because the disc hasn't been purchased within my country.
So again - I'm not attempting any purchase or download any purchased digital copy - it's on a DVD I own physically so... why is even the region of my Store relevant, the code I enter is (as I assume) just supposed to check if it's a legal genuine copy (which it is, as I've said - there are 6 discs in the pack: 3 movies on 3 Blu-rays and 3 DVD containing these digital copies of them). If I own it, I think that's proof enough that I have the right to use it. I just don't get it. I fully agree with you and understand your point if there was any purchase going on here, but it's not, it's just - I put a disc into my computer and I can't access it

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • How do I save a dvd (with video from a video camera) to edit with imovie?

A friend took videos of an event of mine with his video camera. He then put the clips on a dvd and gave it to me. It was recorded on with a Sony video camera and imported on to a pc with vega's then burned with DVD Complete. He was not sure what format he put it in but maybe something like video_TS.BUP. When I open it up from my desktop it has a audio TS and Video TS folder. When I try to open one of the video folders it goes to iphoto and says unrecognizable format. So does he need to save it to different format and what format would that be. I want to put those clips on my mac to edit to make a movie. I have the newest macbook with the newest imovie. Thanks for all your help!

DVDs are encoded into MPEG2, which iMovie cannot edit. So you need to convert the DVD back to something else. For highest quality, I recommend that you convert the DVD to Apple Intermediate Codec. There is a free tool called MPEG Streamclip that will do this. You will also need to install the Apple QuickTIme MPEG2 Playback Component.
    Here are the details.
    1) Download and install the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component ($20) - available online from Apple.
    2) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    3) Start MPEG Streamclip
    4) Insert your DVD into your Mac. If DVD Player or Front Row starts automatically quit those.
    5) Open a Finder window. Navigate to your DVD to the Video_TS folder.
    6) Drag the .VOB files from the Video_TS folder and drop then into MPEG Streamclip.
    7) If MPEG Streamclip offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes.
    8) Use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
9a) Optional: You can deinterlace your footage in this step, if you like
9b) optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
9c) Optional: If you don't want to make one huge clip out of your DVD, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 8 through 10 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
    10) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
    11) Open iMovie.
    12) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/From File and choose the file you saved in steps 8, 9, 10.
    13) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.

  • Importing VCR/DVD to Mac via video camera - HELP

    Hello,
I'm trying to transfer video from a dvd/vcr combo into iMovie, and can't get it to work. I have a Samsung DVD Recorder and VCR (DVD-VR375), and a Sony HandyCam.
I've tried pretty much everything that I can think of to get the video capture to work, but I get no picture, and no options to choose my Video Camera from the iMovie screen. I've also tried to burn the VCR tape to a dvd and then load the DVD into the Mac, but that isn't working either. I don't know if I'm not using the right dvd or what. I don't know if it might be that the Samsung player isn't compatible, and if that's the case, if anyone knows of a compatible player, please let me know.
I'm very frustrated, so if you can help me out, it would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your time!

How did you do it? I'm trying to upload videos from a JVC-GR-72U Mini-DV into my MacBook via firewire. I'm ignorant to the creative world of Mac.

  • Copying unedited video from tape to DVD

I have some video on miniDV tape, and want to give a copy of the video to someone on DVD. What's the best way to do this? I want to leave the video in a format that they can easily do whatever they want with it: edit it, put some of it on their web site, whatever, even if they use a PC. Keeping the footage completely unprocessed would be ideal.
Any suggestions? Normally I import my videos straight into iMovie 8, but I doubt that's the way to do this.
    DanK

Putting the video on a DVD is the worst way to give it to your friend, if their intention is to edit it. DVD's are end products, not intended for editing and jumping through some hoops to do so will only degrade the video quality.
If they have a miniDV cam as well, make them a copy of the video and send them the tape, but first, you will need to get iMovie HD6, which is a free download for users of iLife 08. That is to enable you to export your video back to your cam. iMovie 08 doesn't allow it.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
Capture your video into HD6, put the clip(s) in the timeline and then export the movie back to a new tape. The video on the new tape will be one long clip though, not broken up into clips, as you may have on the original tape.
Does that work for you? I don't see other options.

  • Unable to import video frompanasonic VDR-D105 DVD video camera to imovie HD

Trying to import my video from my dvd camera but imovie can not find camera. When I connect the firewire the camera locates DVD player software and allows me to play it on my computer, but not able to import to imovie. DVD Player allows my to clip my video but does not allow me to transfer of save it on my computer.
If I'm unable to import, Is there a work around to get my video in imovie, say quicktime?
I am using imovie HD 6.0.3.

    Hi S
    1. DVD-Cameras are for playback - not to be edited from.
iMovie, FinalCut Express and Pro works with miniDV tape Cameras
This course DVD and hard disk Cameras compact info to medium BUT in
a destructive way. You can't get full quality back to be edited.
miniDV also compacts to tape BUT Non-destructive = full quality to Mac.
    2. Does Your Camera really have FireWire. Most probably You are using
the USB-cable that was delivered with Your Camera. FW is buy extra.
Best solution - though sour. Change Camera
If this isn't an option You'll have to back convert to streaming DV that iMovie
    and FCE/P understands.
    - Converting programs like may be:
MPEG Streamclip converts from mpeg-1 to whatever you like (within reason).
    QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component
    or
via analog out on Camera via an A/D-box to FW to Mac.
Non is a good way though.

  • I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Pro

I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Project that is HD, and tried reconnect media with original HD movies (video), the sequence project got distorted for all the text, shapes used and all.. everything changed its orientation and scale.. Is there a way by which I can preserve my work done on DV PAL and switch it preserving its proportions, scale and orientation, but on a HD project sequence?? Appreciate your help and advice..

Yes.  A couple of ways that might work.
    First Way
What you need to do is load one of your hd clips in the viewer and edit into a new HD sequence.  Does it display correctionly?
OK, select the clip in the hd timeline and copy (command-c).  Now go to the HD sequence with the material that's distorted.  Select all (command-a) and paste attributes (option-v) and choose basic motion and distort.  That should maek things work.  What won't work is anything that you've adjusted as far as basic motion or distort in your PAL sequence.  That I'm pretty sure you'll have to redo.
    Second Way.
Choose your original PAL sequence and do a Media Manage changing the sequence preset to the appropriate HD paramenters with the media offline.  You then should be able to reconnect these clips with your original HD media.

Search this forum for "compatible, DVD camcorder" and you will find many threads where people lament this truth:
iMovie is for miniDV formatted video connected via Firewire.
Mini DVD camcorders are designed for you to do very light editing on the camera before you finalize the DVD and don't support being imported into a computer. Anyway, many of the experts here know of converters and workarounds, if you want to spend some more money. You could start with these threads:

Somewhere I have read a pretty detailed thread describing what converter you need and how to do it. So just keep searching...
