Anyone doing Blu-ray yet?

I was thinking about getting an internal Blu-ray drive for my new Mac Pro and I was wondering if anyone is doing it here.
I'm guessing the only way to do it right now is to export out of Motion as a QT movie and then use Adobe Encore, which supports Blu-ray.
Does anyone have experience with Adobe Encore or doing Blu-ray?
Do you use the same HD-DVD preset for Blue-ray in Compressor?
Thanks!
Scot

Yes, after you select "HD DVD", the Disc/Volume tab has "Disc media: Red Laser, Blue Laser". However, this is HD-DVD and not Blu-ray. Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray use the blue laser.
When you click on Blue Laser, the size information goes to 15 gigs, which is HD-DVD. If you select dual layer, it goes up to 30 gigs. Blu-ray is 25 gigs and 50 gigs.
The red laser is the standard DVD, 4.7 gigs. Blue laser is used by HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm a novice when it comes to HD-DVD and Blu-ray, but I'm guessing that there is more to formatting a disc than the color of the laser. There is the format of the files and directory names, format of the disc itself, I'm guessing.
In any case, from what I've read, the only way to do it is with Adobe Encore and Encore isn't for mass duplication since there's this whole Sony system involved with that and it costs a huge amount of money. Encore is for BD-R only, which is fine for me since this is for a tradeshow and I only need 2 copies and not 10,000.
For commercial production of Blu-ray, it's at the point DVD was at the beginning stages where you have to put up a ton of dough to create the master to someone who has the really expensive gear.

  • Anyone doing Blu-ray on Mac?

I'm thinking about getting a Blu-ray drive for my new Mac Pro. I'm using Motion 3 for my motion graphics but since DVD Studio Pro doesn't support Blue-ray, I'm considering getting PP/Encore for Blu-ray.
Are there any Mac users doing this here with any tips on which drive is best supported by Encore and output settings from Compressor (assuming h.264)?
    Thanks!

I have been experimenting with Encore for the last three weeks. First the good news: you can produce a Blu-ray BD-R using Encore. It allows you to make a Blu-ray disk with HD content. You can make menus etc. But you are limited to DVD specs. Now the bad news: This program is really unstable (buggy) and really slow. You can make it work, but not on any kind of a deadline. I encode files from FCP compressor using the .H264 HD preset and raising the data rate to 25mps. Then import them into Encore. Watch the audio files, Encore is fussy what it likes in an audio file. AC3 works most of the time, but not always. Dolby Auto does not work (all the time) Dolby 2.0 does work. Weird. If you are used to DVD StudioPro this is at least 2 generations back in functionality DVDSP 1.5. In stability it is not even close. Make your menus in Photoshop, it will save you time. If you can battle your way through the process, the end results are spectacular. Just don't try to do this on a tight deadline. Also, don't try to burn directly to a BD-R disk, make a disk image and burn the image from Toast. In fact for doing what you are doing Toast 9 might do what you need, even though the encoder is not as good.

  • DVD Studio Pro does BLU RAY? How?

so... i'm using Final Cut Studio 2.
I have an edited footage in FCPRO in this format: XDCAM EX 1080p30
What are the settings in Compressor that i have to use to export my HD project
to make a BLU RAY disc in DVD Studio Pro?
If you don't want to answer me... please give a link to a tutorial or something on this matter...
    thanks people!

You can make SDs from HD footage, you can burn HD DVD (sort of) to play on the now defunct HD DVD Player and you can also make hobbled blu-ray discs with the new Final Cut Studio 3. Hobbled meaning not full blown authoring of all the bells & whistles of blu-ray, but basic menu and video stream.
http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/whats-new.html (The Final Cut Studio 3 upgrade is $299 in the U.S.)
http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs/ (blu-ray burner needed if you want to burn blu-ray)
Toast also offers limited blu-ray authoring and so does Adobe Encore (a bit more)

  • Blu Ray yet for DVD Studio Pro?

I haven't asked recently about burning Blu Ray discs in a new version
of DVD SP, so here I am asking again: Has anyone heard any scuttlebutt
about a possible upgrade of DVD SP 4 to allow to burn HDV FCP QT movies
to Blu Ray discs? Toast 10 has been working fine for me so far, but curious
if Apple has hinted at changing their minds and endorsing Blu Ray as an
    option?

I do bet my business on it. But by the sme token, having a business means making sure you have back-ups and rotating hard drives also. I had some of the first CDs ever made, and many of them are failing, even some of the more recent ones from the mid-1990s. And these do not include the burn your own.
Blu-ray as a storage method makes no sense to me personally. Right now they each hold 25 Gigs (as you said), which means 40 of them - or $280 - for one Terrabyte. You can get 2 1.5 terrabyte drives for $200 and they will take up alot less room than 40 blu-ray discs.
I would bet neither hard drives or blu-ray will be around in 20 years, and if I was going to bet, it will be alot shorter than that. It will be SSD, Compact Flash, downloads and whatever follows. blu-ray and DVD will be like my Zip drives, Jaz drives or VideoDiscs.
If anyone has a business that deals with media storage where it is important, I would steer them away from DVD/blu-ray and tell them to get a good RAID 1 external, with automatic mirroring, three hard drives and rotate them with one copy off-site. There are enclosures where they a popped in and out like floppies and you store them in something similar to a VCR case.
    Like I said, YMMV.

  • Doing Blu-Ray (WITHOUT DVD Studio Pro!)

I'm frequently finding myself in a fix because of DVD Studio's ongoing lack of Blu-Ray support (clients wanting Blu-Ray - 5. Clients wanting HD-DVD - ZERO!) Anyway... my gripes aside, for the current project I am required to supply an auto-looping video graphics project being displayed on 60" plasmas running from a Blu-Ray player. So there's no proper 'authoring' to do as such, I just need to get the video file onto the disc, auto-start and seamlessly loop. Now in the early days of DVD I used to be able to do just this without using a heavyweight authoring program - as I recall it was a simple utility that came with the burner that allowed me to assemble a basic playable disc from pre-encoded assets.
Is there any utility out there that can allow me to offer a compromise until Apple pull their finger out? I looked at Roxio's Toast but I'm not sure whether this will do the job?
    Much appreciation everyone,
    Tom

You can actually now do very limited authoring without Encore on a Mac - but you MUST be using a Mac Pro to do it:
Panasonic now makes an internal ATA-connected BR burner for the Mac Pro:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Panasonic/SW5582BK/
Toast 9 now has BR authoring capability - think of a scaled-down version of iDVD (it has extremely limited options) and they claim burned BR discs will now play on any set-top or PS3 player; previously a burned BR could only be played back on a computer (and sometimes on a PS3).
Using BootCamp you can purchase Roxio's DVDitPro HD which also has BR capabilities - this has a little more functionality than iDVD, but it's still not anywhere close to what DVDSP and lightyears away from Scenarist or Sony Blu-Print.
Full BR authoring on a Mac, i.e. DVDSP-5 is not even on the horizon yet as no formal announcement has come from Apple, and since Apple is not attending NAB this year it's a total crap-shoot as to when they plan on taking things to the next level.

  • Has anyone sloved Blu-ray Error 25?

    Hello,
I am trying to author a Blu-ray DVD and When it comes time to burn I get the following error message:
Blu-ray Error: "not enough free storage", Code "25", Note: "Not enough disc space.
I've serached on these forums and it appears that no one has posted a solution.  I've spent about 3 hours on the phone with Adobe technical support and so far they seem to know less about this error than I do.  Please help!

Just another try: the firmware "this unknown".
Just minutes ago I was trying to burn a data CD.
I burned (really BURNED!!!!!!!) 3 CDs without success: it failed all the time.
Tried with other softwares: same result!!
So I went to Pioneer website and downloaded latest firmware that ALREADY I'VE INSTALLED (dated back to July 2008).
Bingoo!! All the two BD writers works great with CDs.
Sometimes some drivers go corrupted by misterious operations (registry data cleaner first (very unuseful)).
So another challenge Vs bad luck could be a refresh.
Obviously, Steph, this is not your case, sorry.
    Hope this helps

  • Does Yosemite support Blu-Ray disc and 4K playback on the iMac with a 4K player?

If I plug a Blu-Ray or 4K player into an iMac, will Yosemite support playback?  What additional software is needed and available?

It's hard to say considering Apple hasn't supported Blu-ray yet and the downloaded Blu-ray resources are really not what we exactly want. The most directly way is to install Mac Blu-ray player and Blu-ray drive. Macgo is the best now to support 4K Blu-ray and Yosemite.

  • Where is the Blu-ray processed movie?

    Howdy.
So I bought a 6X Samsung USB external Blu-ray drive (the MCE Technologies 12X internal wouldn't work, so I sent it back). I'm rendering out a 2-hour long 1080p movie right now via the Share:Blu-ray option in Final Cut Pro X. It's been 7 hours now and it's 95% done with the render. It hasn't burned the disc yet. So this leads me to wonder where this movie is that is being rendered? Anyone know where this file is located?
If I select Share:Blu-ray again, will it just burn a copy, or will it have to go 7 hours again processing it? I was a fan of DVD Studio Pro (before Apple realized selling movies on iTunes was more lucrative than giving people the tools to make their own discs) and once you rendered it in DVD Studio Pro, you could just burn the same image over and over. Can Final Cut Pro X do that?
Any tips from anyone who has experience doing Blu-ray is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Scot

OK, so I found what I think are the two files (.264 movie and the ac3 audio) on the hard drive the project is located, Final Cut Projects:Project Name Folder:Shared Items
It's in the Shared Items folder.
It's burning now so I don't know if I can burn these again, but I'll post it here if I find out. FYI, a 2 hour Blu-ray movie is 18 giges video, 400 megs audio.

  • Using an external Blue Ray Disc Drive/Burner with an imac?  Can I?  Brand?

I have a blue ray player in the living room and I'm just starting to research burning blue ray discs using the imac.
I have an intel based imac, 2.8ghs intel core 2 duo, 4gb sdram, 1tb hard drive.
Should I be able to safely use an external blue ray burner?
If so, recommendations as to a product?

there is no official support for blue ray drives in leopard. Steve jobs said blue ray is "a bag of hurt" referring to the licensing issues for blue ray.
As a result there is no recommended drives as they are not officially supported.
I can't recommend either as I don't use Blue ray yet.
A quick google brought up this
    http://www.tuaw.com/2007/01/25/blu-ray-arrives-for-the-mac-wheres-hd-dvd/
Judging by your list of gadgets below your post, it won't be much good as it is for the Mac Pro
All I can say is that Snow Leopard may bring better support for Blue Ray, all you can do is hope!

  • H264 file conversion for use in DVDit on PC for Blu-Ray Disc Burn

We're trying to create our first Blu-Ray HD disc project and have met with some success. The problem is the frame update rate on the Blu-Ray during playback. It's not real time. Here's the workflow that we created since FCP doesn't support Blu-Ray yet. We're taking the original animation source footage created in AVI with the following specs: progressive, 1280x720. 59.94, 158 mb/s and importing into FCP. Then, after editing we export an H264 out of Compressor with these specs: progressive, 1280x720. 59.94, 16 mb/s. We then take that H264 file to DVDit on the PC and author the Blu-Ray disc. The resolution of the video is fantastic but the frame rate lags at certain areas. This is unacceptable to the client so we're trying to fix the problem. Any Ideas or better workflow? Thanks.

    Hi Video Dude
here's a good article I posted on the DVDSP forum as well. It tells a bunch about workflow and the problems the author faced. I hope you know that this is kind of a new technology - so much so that I would frankly say it's in the beta stanges at this point even though you can buy players and authoring software - problems might come up that you have no control at this point. Just so you & your client relize this. Check for plyer updates as well.

  • Output to Blu-Ray and Audio from Gaming videos.

Just a simple questions, does premiere pro allow output as Blu-Ray. I have a series of home movies, I want to produce as Blue-Ray and all I can find is only DVD publishing.
On another issue, I am trying to create a video of online gaming that I play and the clan I belong to play to promote the clan, I have some footage from Arma 3, War Thunder, however with my Rust game the audio is very slow. How do I correct this,  Would the video resolution affect the audio. I use Bandicam to capture my online gaming footage which is outputted as AVI file.  This plays well in Windows Media Player, Realplayer, and PowerDirector (Does Blu-Ray 3D).  I have been told by quite a few clan members that premiere pro was a good video editing software so I wanted to try and see for myself seeing I have a complete Creative cloud Subscription.
    Video informations is as follows:
    codec MPEG 1   Resolution: 1912 x1060 @ 30fps
Audio is MPEG -1 Layer 2 48000Hz @192 kbps Monophonic
    Codecs are installed.
The audio, almost sound as thought I am speaking in game in slow motions,  I have tried to increase the speed, got as far as 500% which is still too slow.  I am new Premiere Pro.
It would be greatly appreciated if someone could assist me with this.

Premiere Pro BY ITSELF will not create DVD or BluRay... you may export files for authoring in EncoreCS6, which is a separate download... go to the bottom of page #5 at The PPro/Encore tutorial list http://forums.adobe.com/message/2276578 for more information on using PProCC with EncoreCS6

  • Blu-Ray Creator does not seem to work- has anyone used with success

I just purchased Blu-Ray Creator from the app store and it will not let me backup a hardcopy Blu-Ray disk onto my hard drive. Has anyone bought it and got it to work?

    Hi abhi.p,
Thank you very much for your kind reply.
Yes, it does show the checkbox as checked if I use value="#{true}". However, it is checked permanently, user cannot uncheck it.
That's why I used the bean variable "#{pageFlowScope.fullExpressionEditor.categorySel.selected}".
The variable 'selected' is set to Boolean.TRUE in the bean. But in the UI the checkbox unchecked, strange!!

  • DVD drive does not play blu-ray

I am wondering if anyone can help me. I have been trying for the last several days to get my DVD drive to read blu-ray's. It is an HP DV-7 1038ca and there is a Blu-Ray symbol on the drive. When I put a BD in the drive, it cannot read it at all and says there is no disc in the drive. It plays regular movies and I have never had any problems with it.
I have taken some of the earlier suggestions to people with similar problems. I tried Matz_Run.dvd.exe and it told me I had a problem. It said I can read HD-ROM but it would not recognize the disc in the drive. I dried some Cyberlink software to detect BD and BD-3D technology (I forget what it was called) and it said that everything except "software" was functioning. I have loaded the latest HP Quickplay and that did not work. Then I saw that Mediasmart's latest version was actually the replacement. I downloaded Mediasmart from the HP website (as I did not have it before this), then I installed it and upgraded it to the latest edition directly within the software. My computer still refuses to acknowledge there is a disc in the drive when I put an HD disc in. The discs I am trying to read is a 4-part series from BBC vvideo called PLANET EARTH. I have no other BluRay discs currently at my disposal. I even tried changing the country code just in case and this did not work.
Then I tried Cyberlink PowerDVD 10 Ultra Mark II as this also seems to have BD capability, but same thing, total failure. With the Cyberlink detection program, I get the idea that it works, but perhaps it does not. Is it possible that my BD laser is malfunctioning? Is there any way to check? Or perhaps the issue is something else (other than frustrating). I am running Windows 7 Home 64-bit. I am using MS Security Essentials for protection and Spybot S&D. I cannot think of any other specs to give you at this time, so feel free to ask if I left something out.
    Please help.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
Does the drive still recognise and play DVDs and CDs?  If so, I'm afraid it does look like this may be a hardware issue with the BD laser.
One further thing to try is to open the drive and carefully clean both lenses and check again, but if this doesn't help, you may want to start considering replacing the Drive.

  • PS3 Blu-ray remote? Anyone from Sony able to comment?

I really like being able to use the game controllers withmyX Z Ultra, do it seemed reasonable to hope that the Blu-ray remote fit a PS3 would work.
The first hurdle was pairing them. The ps3 remote has more PIN, and android won't let you pair with a blank PIN. However, I found an app which solves this:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jpn.frontia.waka.Bluetooth
Sadly, after pairing, the Blumote doesn't actually control my Xperia.
Does anyone have any ideas whether this might be made to work?
Being able to plug my XZU into the tv or sound system and control a media player app with a Blu-ray remote would be awesome
    Tasks

I'd even be happy to be a beta tester for this. I am still wondering why this would be so hard? Surely the ps3 blumote should generate the same Bluetooth events as a game controller?
I guess I need to do some of my own investigations into this.
